The Nigerian Army has defended its shooting of members of the Islamic Movement in Nigeria (IMN) by sharing a video of United States President Donald Trump issuing a warning to migrants.

The Nigerian Army had opened fire on Shi'a protesters during their annual religious trek, which led to the death of more than 40 members of the sect. In the video, which was originally aired on November 1, 2018, Trump was recorded issuing a warning to migrants who attempt to forcefully gain entry into the country.

According to Trump, the United States would not tolerate the treatment meted out to Mexican security operatives who were pelted with stones by migrants trying to forcefully pass through its borders. In the video, Trump said the US government will not tolerate anyone who throws a rock at the military as soldiers will "consider that a firearm" because "there's not much difference".

The Nigerian Army shared the video on its official Twitter handle on Friday morning and called on Nigerians to "make deductions". This was ostensibly in reference to the raging debate that soldiers pelted with stoned by Shi'ites in Abuja should not have responded by firing gunshots.

Oby Ezekesili, presidential candidate of the Allied Congress Party of Nigeria (ACPN), says the People Democratic Party’s (PDP) recent statement on fuel price shows that its presidential candidate Atiku Abubakar is ignorant about the economy.

PDP had said on Thursday that Atiku had already “worked out a pricing template that will immediately crash the pump price of fuel in the country, since the Buhari-led APC administration, in its insensitivity, has failed to do the needful in the last 3 years”.

“Our party is talking with top international players in the oil and gas industry, and this engagement has shown that the appropriate pump price of fuel in the Nigerian market, under the current subsidy regimes of the Buhari Presidency, should be within the borders of N87 to N90,” it said. See Also Sahara Reporters Atiku Will 'Immediately' Reduce Fuel Price To 'N87-N90/Litre, Says PDP

Responding on Friday, Ezekwesili said PDP had reminded everyone of why “both they and the APC are one of the same, fielding a single candidate called #BuTiku”.

“In a PDP statement this morning, the party promised to crash fuel pump price to N90,’” read a statement issued by her party and signed by its National Chairman, Gani Galadima.

“This is 419, and it betrays the PDP candidate’s ignorance of how Basic Economics and the solutions Nigeria truly needs. The country ended 2018 with 4trillion of Fiscal Deficit. Where will they find money to slash fuel price? Even if FG had such money, is it because they want another round of Subsidy-Slush Fund that they want to take the country deeper into the corrupted and market distorting fuel price fixing method?

“The Obiageli Ezekwesili For President 2019 campaign is all for market determined pricing which will end up more favorable to the Poor who have been and continue bearing the effect of corrupted subsidy regimes more while the rich enjoy the benefits.

“This is a reminder to Nigerians that Abubakar Atiku’s so-called and questionable business acumen does not qualify him to run this economy. Obiageli Ezekwesili is the only candidate in the race who has built and rebuilt national economies in Nigeria and outside, with a track record to show for it.”

Reno Omokri, former media aide to former President Goodluck Jonathan, has questioned the decision of Nasir el-Rufai, Governor of Kaduna State, to opt for a Muslim candidate.

Earlier on Friday, el-Rufai announced Dr. Hadiza Balarabe, a medical doctor and the current Executive Secretary of the Kaduna State Primary Health Care Development Agency, as his running mate for the 2019 governorship election.

The decision, he had said, was in continuation of his "deliberate policy on promoting women”.

However, according to Omokri, such Muslim-Muslim ticket is capable of setting an ultra-religious state like Kaduna on fire.

“Is @Elrufai trying to set Kaduna on fire?” he tweeted. “How can he, a Muslim, name Hadiza Balarabe, another Muslim, as his running mate? In an untra-sensitive religious state like Kaduna, it is vital to balance the ticket to give Christians a sense of belonging so that peace reigns.”

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has filed fresh fraud charges against Mr Patrick Akpobolokemi, former Director-General of the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA), and six others at an Ikeja High Court.

Akpobolokemi is facing a 13-count charge trial alongside Ezekiel Agaba, Ekene Nwakuche, Governor Juan, Vincent Udoye, Adegboyega Olopoenia and a company — Gama Marine Nigeria Ltd. The charge borders on fraud and stealing of N754.8million belonging to NIMASA.

In the old 13-count charge, the defendants were alleged to have between Oct. 30, 2014 and May 6, 2015, converted N754.8 million belonging to NIMASA to their personal use.

The funds were allegedly released to the defendants for the implementation of Voluntary International Maritime Organisation Member State Audit Scheme (VIMSAS). The EFCC also alleged that the defendants knowingly forged a document titled ‘Re: Request For Payment as consultant for VIMSAS Administration Services’, dated May 25, 2015, purported to have been issued by Arrow World Consulting Ltd.

The offences were said to have contravened the provisions of Sections 285 and 409 of the Criminal Code Laws of Lagos State, 2011

During Friday’s proceedings, Mr Rotimi Oyedepo, the lead prosecuting counsel of the EFCC, informed the court that the anti-graft agency had filed fresh charges against the defendants, noting that they should be re-arraigned and their plea taken.

However, EFCC did not reveal details of the fresh charges.

Objecting, Mr E. D Onyeke, Agaba’s defence counsel, requested for more time to examine the new charges and to advise the defendants accordingly.

“The prosecution has not afforded us the opportunity to view the list of new prosecution witnesses who somewhere along the line will come here to give evidence,” Onyeke said.

“I need to be well informed. I request that we be given time to look at the amended charge so that I will advise my client and the defendants will take their plea.”

Agreeing with Onyeke’s submission, Oyedepo said: “My Lord, he should be given time; it is in the interest of justice. The application of the defence is meritorious. When we come on Monday (Nov. 5) the defendants will be arraigned, their plea taken, and we will proceed with trial.”

Acceding to the requests of the prosecuting and defence counsel, Justice Raliatu Adebiyi adjourned the case until Nov. 5 for re-arraignment and continuation of trial.

An Ikeja High Court has fixed December 14 to hear the no-case submissions in the ongoing corruption trial of Justice Rita Ofili-Ajumogobia, a Federal High Court, Lagos judge and Godwin Obla, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN).

Ofili-Ajumogobia is standing trial alongside Obla on a 31-count charge bordering on alleged perversion of the course of justice, unlawful enrichment and forgery proffered by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

Justice Hakeem Oshodi fixed the date on Friday after hearing the submissions of the prosecution and defence.

While adjourning the case, Oshodi noted that counsel should, by the adjourned date, "tidy up" all applications ensure that the court attends to them simultaneously, saving precious judicial time.

Earlier during proceedings, Robert Clarke (SAN), defence counsel to Ajumogobia, had informed the court that he had filed a Motion on Notice dated October 23, challenging the jurisdiction and competence of the court to hear the case.

However, he noted that he intended to but was yet to file a no-case submission before the court.

In his submission, Ifedayo Adedipe (SAN), Obla's defence counsel, informed the court that he had filed a no-case submission dated Setember 14 but was yet to receive a response from the EFCC.

Responding, Rotimi Oyedepo, the lead prosecuting counsel for the EFCC, admitted to receiving Adedipe's no-case submission but noted that he was waiting to receive a similar application from Clarke.

"I await the first defendant's counsel to approach me because it is not tidy for me to respond to both applications separately," Oyedepo said.

During the previous court proceedings held on September 14, the EFCC had closed its case against Justice Ofili-Ajumogobia. In proving its case of corruption against Ofili-Ajumogobia, the EFCC had presented 12 witnesses and tendered several documents that were admitted in evidence by the court.

The anti-graft agency had alleged that Ofili-Ajumogobia had illegally received a sum of $793,800 in several tranches from different sources between 2012 and 2015.

On his part, Obla (SAN) was alleged to have offered a sum of N5 million as gratification to Ofili-Ajumogobia to pervert the course of justice. The offences are contrary to Sections 64(1), 82(a) and 69(1) (a) of the Criminal Laws of Lagos State No. 11, 2011.

Nasir el-Rufai, Governor of Kaduna State, has announced Hadiza Balarabe as his running mate for the 2019 general election.

A statement by Samuel Aruwan, Senior Special Assistant to the Governor (Media and Publicity) on Friday, noted that the choice was part of the Governor's "deliberate policy" on promoting women.

The Governor also explained his reason for not running with his incumbent deputy, Barnabas Yusuf Bala, saying the latter had indicated interest in contesting for a seat in the National Assembly.

The statement read: "Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai has announced the selection of Dr. Hadiza Balarabe as his running mate for the 2019 general election.

"The choice of Dr. Hadiza Balarabe as running mate continues Malam Nasir El-Rufai's deliberate policy of promoting women. There are five female commissioners in his 14-person cabinet, a feat not attained even by governors that had much larger cabinets. This is the first time in the history of Kaduna State that a major political party will select a woman as running mate.

"The incumbent Deputy Governor, Arc. Barnabas Yusuf Bala, has opted to go to the National Assembly and has since emerged as the APC's candidate for the southern Kaduna senatorial district.

"Dr. Hadiza Balarabe is the current Executive Secretary of the Kaduna State Primary Health Care Development Agency, a position she has held since February 2016. In that role she has overseen the Kaduna State Government's programmes to revitalise and strengthen primary health care as the core of health service delivery in the state. Under her watch, the state is renovating and equipping 255 primary health centres with tools to assist better antenatal serrvices and safer delivery. The agency has also helped expand vaccine coverage to protect children across the state.

"Prior to joining the Kaduna State Government, Dr. Hadiza Balarabe was Director of Public Health in the FCT. She studied Medicine at the University of Maiduguri, and graduated in 1988. She was a Senior Registrar at the Ahmadu Bello University Teaching Hospital before joinning the services of the FCT in 2004."

"Dr. Hadiza Balarabe, who was born in 1966, is from Sanga Local government which is located in the southern Kaduna senatorial district."
