Mixed reactions have continued to trail the conviction of former Minneapolis Police officer, Derek Chauvin, over the murder of George Floyd, an African-American man.
On Tuesday, Chauvin was convicted on all counts in the death of Floyd, whose killing sparked worldwide protests and a bothering on racial discriminations in the United States.
After about a day of deliberations, the jury found Chauvin guilty of unintentional second-degree murder, third-degree murder and second-degree manslaughter.
Judge Peter Cahill read the verdict at the heavily secured Hennepin County Government Center in downtown Minneapolis, where the trial began last month. A cheer could be heard from the crowd of peaceful protesters that had gathered outside.
Cahill said sentencing will take place in about eight weeks.
The issue has drawn commendations from several people, particularly the black community over the speedy administration of justice in the case.
The judgement comes less than a year after Floyd was killed. But the reverse is the case in Nigeria where criminals are kept in detention for years due to a wobbling justice system.
In the wake of Chauvin's judgement, SaharaReporters examines some celebrated criminal cases pending in Nigeria, for which the accused persons have remained in detention for long without proper trial.
Wadume
On August 6, 2019, a kidnap kingpin, Hamisu Bala (aka Wadume) was arrested in Ibi, Taraba State, by members of the Intelligence Response Team of the IGP office following a tip-off.
The arrest had initially generated commendations but beyond the initial euphoria, nothing meaningful has been achieved in the trial.
The Nigerian Government arraigned Wadume and his co-defendants on June 8, 2020, on amended 13 counts of terrorism, kidnapping and other related offences.
The others are Aliyu Dadje (a police Inspector), Auwalu Bala (aka Omo Razor), Uba Bala (aka Uba Delu) Bashir Waziri (aka Baba Runs), Zubairu Abdullahi (aka Basho) and Rayyanu Abdul.
The trial judge, Binta Nyako, told all defendants who intended to file no-case submission to do so within 21 days.
Nyako adjourned the matter till May 18 for defendants to open their defence or file no-case submission.
The former Inspector-General of Police, Mohammed Adamu, had originally filed 16 counts of terrorism, murder, kidnapping and illegal arms running against Wadume and the others.
They were accused of conspiring to commit felony, to wit: acts of terrorism, by attacking and kidnapping one Usman Garba, aka Mayo, at his filling station in Takum, thereby committing an offence contrary to Section 17 of the Terrorism (Prevention) Amendment Act 2013.
They were also accused of possessing six AK-47 rifles and dealing in prohibited firearms contrary to Section 27 (1)(a)(I) and (1)(b)(iii) of the Firearms Act 2004.
Evans
The story of Evans is similar to that of Wadume. Evans was arrested on June 10, 2017, at his Lagos home.
But four years after, justice seems far away for those who have come out to say they were victims of the suspected Nigerian kidnapper, whose real name is Chukwudumeme Onwuamadike.
The kidnapper faces multiple counts in three courts and five separate trials.
In a trial case in August 2020, Onwuamadike appeared with alleged accomplices Joseph Emeka, Chiemeka Arinze and Udeme Upong.
They have been charged with attempting to kidnap prominent Nigerian transporter, Vincent Obianodo; murder of his police aide and driver; attempted murder; conspiracy to commit a felony, namely kidnapping; and sale and transfer of firearms, according to the court registrar’s office. They have pleaded not guilty and the trial was postponed to September 17, 2020, after a day of witness cross-examination.
In a recent development, the absence of prosecution witnesses stalled the trials of alleged kidnap kingpin, Evans, which he is facing before Justice Oluwatoyin Taiwo of an Ikeja Special Offences Court.
When the second suit was announced, Bajulaiye-Bishi informed the court that the witness, Inspector Idowu Haruna, Investigating Police Officer, who was due to continue his testimony in the trial-within-trial was unavailable.
The prosecutor informed the court that the IPO was on an official assignment and that he will be “hopefully present” on the next court date.
The judge noted the slow pace of proceedings. She said that the two cases before her had commenced since 2017.
“This case (the Obianodo kidnap trial) is for the continuation of the trial-within-trial. It appears the prosecution is not ready with their witness.
“The court grants the prosecution the last chance to put its house in order.
“Both cases are adjourned until April 5 for the continuation of hearing,” she said.
Apart from these, there are many criminal cases in courts across the country without any headway or hope that they will be concluded soon enough, to give justice to victims.
Many victims of police brutality have all lost hope of ever getting justice as they have been frustrated by the wheel of justice, that is often so slow in Nigeria such that it hardly ever gets to its destination in the lifetime of the victim or their loved ones.

Police News AddThis : Original Author : SaharaReporters, New York Disable advertisements :The Peace Corps of Nigeria is asking its members to pay N5,000 each to participate in a nationwide verification and data capturing programme, SaharaReporters has gathered.
One of the affected unemployed members of the organisation, on Wednesday, told SaharaReporters that over 180,000 members would have to cough up the amount.
“This is extortion; many affected persons cannot afford it,” the member, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said.
Another affected person said the majority of them were not happy with the move and “we will do everything we can to stop it”.
In a memo by the Corps with a ref.no: PCN/HQ/017/027/V.1/21, dated April 9, 2021, only those who participated in the exercise with the payment of N5,000 will be issued the revised service identity card of the Corps.
“In anticipation of the passage of a Bill for An Act to Establish the Nigerian Peace Corps by the National Assembly in order to give statutory backing to this organisation and its eventual assent by Mr President, there is an urgent need to conduct a nationwide verification exercise and capture the data of all current bonafide officers and men of the corps for the records,” the statement partly read.
“The exercise, which is to be conducted simultaneously with the payment of 2021 annual membership dues of five thousand naira (N5,000.00) only, is to be held nationwide. Thus, it is only officers and men that participate in the exercise that will be issued the revised Service ID Card of the Corps.
“As provided for in Article 21, Section 1 (d), page 33 of our enabling Constitution, the data capturing exercise should only involve regular members of the Corps that must have paid all previous approved dues, fees and levies payable by and under the Constitution,” the memo said.

National President of AYCF, Yerima Shettima, said the Nigerian government should review its relationship with its UK counterpart, following such a move.
Alhaji Shettima Yerima, the President of Arewa Youths Consultative Forum (AYCF) Daily Post
On Tuesday, the United Kingdom revealed plans to grant asylum to members of IPOB and the Movement for the Actualisation of the Sovereign State of Biafra.
The Nigerian government had frowned on the news which it claimed was disrespectful and capable of undermining the fight against terrorism and insecurity.
However, Shettima, wondered if Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of IPOB and his members are more important than Nigeria.
Shettima called on the Nigerian government to be decisive in its decision against its UK counterpart.
He said: “It’s a clear indication that the Nigerian government would have to review its relationship with the United Kingdom, UK, because they cannot have a good relationship with a state such as Nigeria and at the same time be giving asylum to a major threat, who is an enemy of this country, a criminal with his organisation proscribed and listed among those of terrorist organisation in the world.
“Giving them asylum means something is wrong, this means that to an extent we will start thinking that the UK has a hand in our problems. Now, what is the interest of the UK in putting them ahead of us?
“I was wondering, is the UK government pretending that they do not know that this guy (Nnamdi Kanu) is doing harm to Nigeria? Is it that they folded their arms for obvious reasons best known to them?
“Are they saying their relationship with that individual criminal is far better than what they have with Nigeria under diplomacy? Something is wrong and for me, the relationship has to be reviewed.
“The Nigerian government must be decisive; it is either the UK government repatriates him to face his trials or they say that Kanu is better than Nigeria.”

International Politics News AddThis : Original Author : SaharaReporters, New York Disable advertisements :A former Assistant Director with the Department of State Services, Dennis Amachree, has said the secret police informed the Nigerian government and the National Assembly of the past radical pro-Taliban views of embattled Minister of Communications and Digital Economy, Isa Pantami, before his confirmation as minister in 2019.
Amachree spoke on PUNCH Online interview programme, The Roundtable, on Wednesday.
He, however, said the minister must have been confirmed by the National Assembly due to a lot of factors, including federal character balancing.
Pantami, a former director-general with the National Information Technology Development Agency, is the only member of the Federal Executive Council from Gombe State.
Many Nigerians have called for the sacking or resignation of Pantami after some comments he made some years ago came into light, which support Islamic extremism.
"We are all happy whenever unbelievers are killed,” Pantami once said as an Islamic scholar and cleric.
He also hailed Osama Bin Laden, who orchestrated the terrorist attacks on United States soil on September 11, 2001, saying the terrorist "is a better Muslim than myself."
Pantami once also condemned Muslims who took up government positions, saying he would never join politics or take up a role in government.
Like many Nigerians, the ex-DSS director also called for the resignation of the embattled minister.
According to him, the Department of State Services (DSS) has information on all individuals of interest, adding that the minister’s past extremist views were communicated to the Federal Government and the legislature.
Amachree said, “There is no information that escapes the DSS, we have all of it, all. When I was working there, we keep a catalogue of anybody of interest that comes up to the limelight in this country.
“During the vetting process for anybody to be appointed a minister or commissioner or anything, your name is sent to the State Security Service (SSS) for vetting. They check your background up to the extent of your grandmother. They check your schools up to the extent of your primary school. And of course, they keep a tab on you online and offline. We get a lot from open source intelligence and I can tell you that in Pantami’s case, we have it.
“But there is a political angle to it. When somebody is being appointed, if the security agencies see that there is something wrong with his name, they will send it to the appointing agency. The appointing agency will now decide amongst other variables either religious variable, federal character balancing variable, or political variable and say that, ‘Oh, yes, we know that this guy has this and that but let’s appoint him.
“So, the political decision is not taken by the SSS. Even when you go to the Senate for confirmation, there is party by party and you can see that there are some political candidates that the opposition party will say that this one will not be appointed but because he belongs to that party, they will appoint him. So, these are political and federal balancing where they will say that there is nobody from this place that has been appointed, so let’s appoint him.”
The ex-DSS director added that the US was gathering information on Pantami.
Amachree said, “He (Pantami) has just submitted his name into US database. The cataloguing of people is not automatic, it comes in drips and drops. Now, people are talking about him and that has come to the attention of the United States Embassy in Nigeria already. Now, they will do a deeper dive into his background. They will catalogue him and now they will start watching him and if it comes to a very critical level, they will place him on a no-fly zone.”

Scandal News AddThis : Original Author : SaharaReporters, New York Disable advertisements :Opposition politicians in Chad have rejected the army's appointment of President Idriss Déby's son to take over in the wake of his death.
Déby, 68 - who had been in power for three decades - died after being shot as he battled rebels on the frontline.
The rebels have also objected the move, saying: "Chad is not a monarchy."
Mahamat Idriss Déby Itno, also known as "General Kaka", was in charge of the presidential guard and is to lead the country for 18 months until elections.
Experts have told the BBC and other broadcasters that the move is unconstitutional, and that the speaker of parliament should take over when a sitting president dies before organising elections.
Déby's death was announced on state TV on Tuesday - a day after provisional election results projected he would win a sixth term in office at the helm of the oil-rich country that has been at the forefront of regional efforts to fight Islamist militants.
The government and parliament have been dissolved. On Wednesday, the borders were reopened and overnight curfew eased slightly.
There are fears that the death could trigger political instability in the vast semi-arid country with a long history of rebellions and coup attempts and where the opposition is weak and divided.
Journalist Mahamat Adamou says markets and shops are open as usual in the capital, N'Djamena, though not as busy as usual and people are still keeping their children away from school.
Tanks and heavy artillery are still deployed around the presidency, though rebel group Fact (the Front for Change and Concord in Chad) says it will halt its advance south to respect the nation in mourning.
Who is Mahamat Idriss Déby Itno?
He is a 37-year-old four-star general who has played a leading role in the army since 2013 when he was appointed deputy head of Chadian forces taking part in anti-terror operations in Mali.
He is also known as "General Kaka" - a reference to his upbringing as he was raised by President Déby's mother and "kaka" means grandmother in Chadian Arabic.
The late president, who was a Muslim, had a large family, having married several times, and had an unknown number of children.
BBC Monitoring's Africa specialist Sam Murunga says Gen Kaka has a reputation for discretion and shunning the limelight, unlike some of his half-brothers.
And he is greatly respected by the army's rank and file, says N'Djamena-based journalist Mahamat Adamou.
It is reported that he was at the frontline in northern Chad when his father was fatally shot.
Why was the president at the front?
Déby was an army officer by training and a former head of the military who came to power in 1990 through an armed uprising - and faced numerous challenges and many coup plots in the years that followed.
Observers say it is no surprise to hear he died on the frontline as he would often take charge during military confrontations - including at a major battle on Lake Chad against Boko Haram militants last year.
The latest rebel incursion began on election day when Fact mounted a border attack from Libya. The group grew out of Chadian rebels once based in Sudan's Darfur region who have mounted various attempts to overthrow Déby, from the Zaghawa ethnic group.
Power struggles in Chad tend to be along ethnic lines and the rebels are known to be dominated by the Gorane community of Déby's predecessor, Hissène Habré - so they are likely to have some backing from his supporters.
In the last few years, the fighters have built up their base in Libya in the Tibesti mountains, which straddle northern Chad and part of southern Libya.
What's the reaction been to Déby's death?
Everyone is shocked - from the opposition to Chad's allies in the fight against Islamist militancy, and state TV is playing religious mourning chants between programmes.
For Déby's rivals, including the country's biggest workers' union the UST, the military takeover is the main problem - they want dialogue and an immediate return to civilian rule.
People riding on motorbikes past a tank near the presidential palace in N'Djamena, Chad
"We must follow the constitution, invite the African Union and the UN to help solve our problems," main opposition figure Saleh Kebzabo, whose UNDR party boycotted the recent election, told the BBC.
Transformers of Chad Party's Succès Masra, who was prevented from standing in the polls as he was too young, said Chadians wanted a leader "chosen democratically".
"This is a coup d'etat somehow… and is not acceptable for the people of Chad," he told BBC Focus on Africa radio.
The army's role in Chad should be to fight terrorism, not run the country, he added.
To that end, African leaders have expressed dismay at Déby's death as Chadian forces are considered to be the most effective in the fight against Boko Haram militants and other jihadist groups linked to Islamic State and al-Qaeda in the region.

Some of the senators also frowned on a vote of N2 billion for retirement incentives.
Comptroller-General of Customs, Col. Hameed Ibrahim Ali (Rtd).
This followed the presentation of Nigeria Customs Service 2021 budget report by the Chairman, Senate Committee on Customs, Excise and Tariffs, Francis Alimikhena (Edo North).
Out of the approved sum, N99.7 billion was voted for personnel cost, N19.5 billion for overhead, and N137.9 billion was approved for capital cost.
In 2021 fiscal year, Customs revenue target was pegged at N1.67 trillion comprising N1.5 trillion for Federation Account and N178 billion for Non-Federation Account.
Details of the budget showed that N2 billion was set aside for retirement incentives for Customs operatives; N3 billion for local travels and transport.
Customs will spend N200 million to maintain its aircraft and N100 million to fuel it.
Internet access charges got N100 million; maintenance of vehicles got N250 million; while N400 million will be spent to fuel the vehicles — this is aside from the N5 billion already earmarked for motor vehicle advances.
Under capital expenditure, Nigeria Customs Service voted N1.6 billion for borehole and other water facilities; N15.9 billion for motor vehicles; N87 million for photocopiers and N81 million for shredding machines.
Before the budget was passed, some senators picked holes in the fiscal document, especially regarding expenditure.
Senator Sam Egwu from Ebonyi queried why the agency is spending N2 billion as welfare packages for retiring officers, while they have retirement benefits.
Senator Bala Ibn Na’Allah, who also raised the issue of N180 million for cleaning and fumigation, asked what the NCS is cleaning and fumigating to have budgeted such a huge sum.
Senator Aliyu Sabi Abdullahi (Niger) expressed concern that Customs is spending huge sums on non-essential items while officers are being attacked at the borders.
Reacting to this budget presentation and consideration, the President of the Senate, Ahmad Lawan, who presided over the plenary, berated the committee chairman for failing in his oversight function.
He urged the committee to upscale its oversight of the agency and ensure that the budget is implemented within the fiscal year.

Various groups have in the last few days called for Pantami’s sacking or resignation.
The raging controversy around Pantami was over his alleged past positions on activities of extremist groups, Al-Qaeda and Taliban, which he was reported to have approved and commended.
However State House correspondents asked the Minister of Information and Culture, Lai Mohammed, if the FEC discussed the brewing crisis on Pantami’s case, especially as demands had been made by the public.
Mohammed had led the Minister of Works and Housing, Babatunde Fashola to the State House media gallery for the post-FEC briefing.
Mohammed was asked whether the council discussed the matter and if the government was comfortable with its burden on its image.
Mohammed said: “I’m not going to go into the issue of whether the government is comfortable or not. I will answer your question directly. It was not discussed at the council meeting.”

Scandal News AddThis : Original Author : SaharaReporters, New York Disable advertisements :The Elites Network for Sustainable Development (ENetSuD) has urged the Kwara State government to establish a Public Complaints and Anti-Corruption Commission (PUCACC) in the state.
The group noted that there is a need to fight corruption institutionally, saying corruption is the major reason the level of growth and development does not commensurate with public funds spent by successive administrations since the return of democracy.
This was disclosed in a statement by the Chairman, Media and Publicity Committee, Elites Network for Sustainable Development (ENetSuD), Saeed Tijjani, on Tuesday.
According to the statement, the Coordinator of ENetSuD, Dr. Alagbonsi Abdullateef, made this call while reacting to the PUCACC Executive Bill 2021 recently passed by the Lagos State House of Assembly, which was signed into law by Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu on Monday, April 19, 2021.
The Commission, as reported, will investigate and prosecute officials of the state government and registered contractors, among others, indicted for economic crimes and financial misappropriation.
Alagbonsi said, “Even though the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) are playing their roles (within their capacity) to fight corruption nationwide, little has been achieved by them at the state and local government (LG) levels. To kill corruption, which is seemingly high at these levels, there is a need to establish an independent state organ that will specialise in the fight against corruption at the state and LG.
"We strongly believe that a thorough scrutiny of public fund and government budget execution at the state and LG levels will block diversion of public funds, improve quality service delivery, enhance value-for-money in project execution, and make adequate funds available that will enable Kwara State government and LGs to meet the needs of the citizenry.”
ENetSuD noted that only three states in Nigeria, namely Kano, Oyo, and now Lagos, have established PUCACC. ENetSuD, therefore, urged the governor of Kwara State, AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, and the Speaker of the State House of Assembly, Salihu Yakubu Danladi, to partner on how to establish the PUCACC in Kwara State as soon as possible.
ENetSuD concluded that the promise and desire of the present administration to fight the systemic corruption in Kwara State will manifest only when concrete steps are taken by the government.
