The Department of State Services (DSS) has warned religious and political leaders against making utterances capable of destabilising the country under the President Muhammadu Buhari-led government.
A statement by Peter Afunanya, its spokesman, accused some clerics and prominent leaders of making divisive comments and collaborating with external forces seeking to plunge Nigeria into crisis.
It warned that it will ”no longer tolerate deliberate machinations by subversive and hostile groups whose agenda is to throw the country into anarchy so as to serve the interests of their sponsors.”
The development comes amid controversies that trailed call by Spiritual Director of Adoration Ministry, Enugu, Rev. Fr. Ejike Mbaka, that the National Assembly impeach President Muhammadu Buhari if he fails to resign over rising insecurity in the country.

The statement read: ”The Department of State Services (DSS) hereby condemns the unsavoury statements by misguided elements who have continued to threaten the government, sovereignty and corporate existence of this country.
”Notable are the unnecessary vituperations and activities of some religious and past political leaders who have either called for a forceful change of government or mass action against it.
”It has been established that the main objective for these is to cause a disintegration of the country. It is unfortunate that those in the forefront of this are respectable individuals who should be patriotic and not allow their personal ambitions to ruin the nation.
”The Service has also noted their desperation and penchant to collaborate with external forces and influences against Nigeria. ‘They are reminded that even though democracy offers free speech, it does not give room to reckless pronouncements capable of undermining security.
”It is instructive to note that the ballot box remains the vehicle of change in a democracy.
”In this regard, self-centred individuals and groups are warned to stop engaging in acts inimical to the peace and sovereignty of this nation.
”In the same manner, influential personalities should be sensitive to the emerging situations and guard against divisive and inciting utterances that may cause a breakdown of law and order.
”Recently, the Service invited and cautioned some persons who deniably recounted their earlier statements or said they were quoted out of context.
”The public should be wary of such individuals and their co-travellers who, incite them in the open but, turn in the secret to retrieve their words after they had caused the damage.
”While the Service reaffirms its unambiguous support to an indivisible, indissoluble and united Nigerian State in accordance with the provisions of the Constitution, it will no longer tolerate deliberate machinations by subversive and hostile groups whose agenda is to throw the country into anarchy so as to serve the interests of their sponsors.
”Consequently, the Service is assiduously working with other security and law enforcement agencies to ensure the maintenance of peace and internal security of the country.”
The service had in the past invited some prominent Nigerians, including a former deputy governor of Central Bank of Nigeria, Obadiah Mailafia, over their comments against the government.

Niger News AddThis : Original Author : Saharareporters, New York Disable advertisements :A Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Robert Clarke, has said Nigeria might not survive the problem of insecurity for another six months.
Clarke, who was speaking on Channels Television's Programme, Sunday Politics, noted that the country was on the verge of collapse, stressing that the prevailing security situation now was worse than the situation during the Shehu Shagari-led government in 1982.
Robert Clarke (SAN)
He said, “The problem in Nigeria is that people who should know don't want to know and do not know. The security section is talking and talking and talking, what are they doing? The security situation in this country today is so bad that I, Robert Clarke, cannot guarantee Nigeria another six months.
“The problems are so overwhelming and they have been created by these same politicians since 1999 constitution came in to be and this crop of politicians, young boys then, who were swimming in Sani Abacha's loot and trying to form as many political parties for him, got into money and came into politics, Nigeria has never been the same.
“Nigeria is worse than it was in 1982. 1982 when Shehu Shagari was the president of the country is a better Nigeria than today, 2021. What is the cause? The cause is the leadership we have.
“Now, I want to propose about security, I may be right or wrong. Now, there is no gainsaying that Nigeria is on the brink of collapse. I had, seven years ago, 70% interest in this government, today I don't have 10% in this government again.
“Something has to be done and these are my solutions: Nigeria has to be changed from what it is today and the only way to change it is to create a state (of emergency) that will make the 1999 constitution ungovernable. We want a state of emergency to be created in Nigeria today.
“How do we do it? Under the Nigerian constitution, the President, who is the commander-in-chief has all the power to delegate all his chief powers to the chief of defence staff. Let him now talk to the president of the Senate, let him now talk to the Speaker of the house and all the governors that a state of emergency is now going to be declared in Nigeria, which means all governors must go, all legislators must go.
“The military will now set up six geographical zones that we believe in our hearts, still exists but let's start on that. Allow military governance over those states. I can assure you, the day Nigeria is released to six states, and there is a state of emergency, 80% of the money being spent on governance will be returned to the treasury. Then, we can sit and rejig Nigeria, let all the states control their internal resources."

News AddThis : Original Author : SaharaReporters, New York Disable advertisements :Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project and 24 concerned Nigerians have sued the Nigerian government and the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) at the ECOWAS Community Court of Justice in Abuja over the NBC Broadcasting Code.
According to a statement issued by the body on Sunday, the suit is over “the arbitrary use of the NBC Act and broadcasting code to target, harass, sanction, and fine independent television and radio stations in Nigeria, and to restrict Nigerians’ freedom of expression and access to information.”
SERAP Logo
SERAP is asking the ECOWAS Court to declare “illegal and contrary to Nigeria’s international human rights obligations the provisions of the NBC Act and broadcasting code frequently apply by the Federal Government and NBC to target, harass, intimidate, and impose sanctions on independent television and radio stations in the country.”
The suit is coming in the wake of the “‘bridge [breach] letter’ by the NBC asking Channels TV to explain why it interviewed the spokesman of a proscribed organisation; the ban on Jay FM 101.9 Jos for playing songs such as Falz’s ‘This is Nigeria’, Wande Coal’s ‘Iskaba’ and Olamide’s ‘See Mary, See Jesus’; and the N9m fines imposed on Channels TV, AIT and Arise TV [N3m each] over their coverage of the #EndSARS protests.”
In the suit number ECW/CCJ/APP/19/21 and filed last week, the Plaintiffs are arguing that “The rights to freedom of expression, access to information and media freedom allow Nigerians to seek and attain truth, which is an inherently good activity. These rights also allow Nigerians to participate in representative governance, social and political decision-making, which the Federal Government and NBC are obligated to foster and encourage.”
According to the Plaintiffs: “Attempts to justify restrictions on these fundamental rights and freedom on the overly vague grounds of incitement, morality and subversion of the constituted authority contradict the principles of the universality of human rights. Freedom of Expression is a fundamental human right and cannot be denied without lawful justification.”
The Plaintiffs are also arguing that “the application of the Nigerian Broadcasting Act 1992 and broadcasting code to sanction independent television and radio stations is arbitrary, and has created an environment in which independent media houses are censored, or resort to self-censorship.”
The Plaintiffs state that “despite the Freedom of Information Act in Nigeria which guarantees the right to access public records, the Federal Government and its agents and several states of Nigeria have routinely refused to release information sought.”
The Plaintiffs are also arguing that “A lot of Nigerians at home and abroad rely on independent television and radio stations including online on their coverage of topical issues of public interest to access impartial, objective and critical information about ideas and views on how the Federal Government and its agents are performing their constitutional and international human rights obligations.”
The suit filed on behalf of the Plaintiffs by their lawyers Kolawole Oluwadare and Opeyemi Owolabi read in part: “The low level of political tolerance for views perceived to be critical of government or offensive means that the press continues to be subject of scare tactics, harassment and intimidation.”
“Censorship restricts the flow of information from the Federal Government and its agents about issues of public interest, preventing people from accessing critical information, expressing themselves, and denying them opportunities to assert other fundamental human rights.”
“It also violates the rights of people to openly discuss issues relating to transparency and accountability in government, and prevents them from accessing the information on a wide range of related concerns.”
“The Federal Government and NBC should be stopped from using the broadcasting code or any other regulations and/or law to erode the sacred rights to freedom of expression, information and media freedom, which is the bedrock of the rule of law and sustainable democracy.”
“The Federal Government and NBC have routinely breached the fundamental principles of media freedom and media plurality, which are a central part of the effective exercise of freedom of expression and access to information, and thereby undermined the ability of Nigeria’s independent media houses to function effectively.”
“The persistent use of the NBC Act and broadcasting code by the Federal Government and the NBC is a blatant violation of the rights to freedom of expression, access to information and media freedom, as well as prohibition against self-censorship.”
“The rights to freedom of expression, access to information and media freedom promote diversity in forms of individual self-fulfilment and human flourishing, which the Federal Government and its agents ought to cultivate to achieve a tolerant and welcoming environment for the sake of good governance, the rule of law and respect for human rights.”
“The Federal Government and NBC have violated the right of Nigerians to objective and impartial news coverage and reportage, as they continue to impermissibly restrict individuals’ rights to freedom of expression, access to information, and press freedom in Nigeria.”
“The Federal Government and NBC have seriously undermined the ability of independent media houses to practise journalism free from undue interference, to cover diverse views that are crucial to the exercise of many other rights and freedoms.”
The Plaintiffs are therefore asking the ECOWAS Court of Justice for the following reliefs:
“A declaration that the application of the provisions of the National Broadcasting Commission Act 1992 and the Nigeria Broadcasting Code by the Defendant and its agent to impose sanctions and penalties on independent television and radio stations is inconsistent and incompatible with the right to freedom of expression, access to information, and media freedom guaranteed under Article 9 of the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights and Article 19 of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights.
“An order setting aside the sum of Five Million Naira or any other form of penal sanction unilaterally imposed by the Defendant and its agent on Channels TV and/or on any such other television and radio stations.
“An order directing the Defendant and its agents to immediately repeal and/or amend the National Broadcasting Commission Act and the Nigerian Broadcasting Code and bring them into conformity with Nigeria’s international human rights obligations.

Mustapha, who is the secretary to the government of the federation, stated that Nigerians who visited those countries will undergo one-week mandatory quarantine at arrival, while the passenger will bear the cost.
The SGF added that the Nigerian government has reduced the validity period of the pre-boarding COVID-19 PCR test for all Nigeria-bound passengers from 96 to 72 hours.
He said, “The Presidential Steering Committee on COVID-19 has over the last few weeks been monitoring with concern the increasing trend of COVID-19 cases in several countries, with additional focus on countries with high incidence, fatality rate and widespread prevalence of variants of concern.
“This interim travel advisory applies to three (3) countries in the first instance. These precautionary measures are a necessary step to minimize the risk of a surge in COVID-19 cases introduced to Nigeria from other countries, while national response activities continue.
“The Presidential Steering Committee on COVID-19, after due consideration has therefore approved the implementation of the following measures: Reduction of the validity period of pre-boarding COVID-19 PCR test for all Nigeria-bound passengers from 96hrs to 72 hours. A Twitter thread, “#FindHinyHumoren was created to this effect.”
Umoren, a fresh graduate of the University of Uyo had dropped a tweet on her handle on Tuesday seeking a job and had got many replies in that regard.
She wrote, “#AkwaIbomTwitter please I'm really in need of a job, something to do to keep mind and soul together while contributing dutifully to the organisation. My location is Uyo, I'm creative, really good at thinking critically and most importantly a fast learner. CV available on request.”
She was allegedly invited by a young man, Frank Ezekiel Akpan, suspected to have kidnapped her as calls to her telephone lines are not connecting.
@UmohUduak1 explained that her friend had gone for an interview at Airport Road, Uyo and while trying to call her friend, heard some screams which raised her suspicion.
In separate tweets, @UmohUduak explained, “Y'all my friend @HinyHumoren is in trouble and she needs our help. I'm currently in Lagos and I can't help than to put this out there. Earlier today, she told me she was going for a job interview at airport road which is quite far from her house.
“To cut everything short, she sent me a 1-second audio record on WhatsApp and I had to call her back to know if she wanted to say something to me but immediately I called her. I heard her screaming. Someone, please help her out.
“This was our last chat before she left for the interview. It was immediately I got this 1-second voice note from her that I called her and she has not been taking my calls. Y'all help me out.”
Many Nigerians had trended the hashtag and some volunteered to help in tracking the location, phone numbers and other details of the suspects.
The suspects in the case have been arrested by the police. The prime suspect, Ezekiel Frank Akpan was picked up. His father and some other accomplices had been arrested earlier.
Akpan, on Friday, had taken to his Facebook page to debunk the allegation without further proof of his innocence.
He also denied having met the young lady when picked up by the police but according to @UmohUduak_1, the prime suspect has confessed to have raped and killed Umoren.
Also, it was gathered that Akpan had taken Umoren to his house and a fight ensued between them. In the process, he used an object to hit her in the head, which resulted in her death.
He was alleged to have hurriedly buried her in a shallow grave and run to another area (Oron) to hide.
Following the pressure mounted by Nigerians on social media, he could no longer stay at Oron and ran to Uruan.
The chairman of Uruan Local Government Area was said to have met the suspect's cousin and requested that the suspect be brought to him.
The suspect reportedly confessed to the Chairman who handed him over to the police.
Nigerians on social media are lamenting the death of Umoren.

News AddThis : Original Author : Saharareporters, New York Disable advertisements :Nigeria is bleeding and things are quickly falling apart. Our hearts have melted down and gradually we are moving towards Syria.
People are afraid over unforeseen circumstances that look certain to consume them. Our collective hope is for a better society where justice and tranquility reign; sadly we are weighed down by all sorts of criminalities.
Buhari Olanrewaju Ahmed
Apparently, our hope for a bright future has been hijacked by terrorists with the active complicity of the government of the day.
We find ourselves in a situation similar to when a father witnesses how they rape and kill his daughter. Ours is a country where terrorists kill and set people’s houses ablaze with absolute impunity.
Our farmers have been killed by government-aiding terrorists, whilst their farmlands have turned to graveyards. Students are being kidnapped by Fulani herdsmen, just as our roads are not at any time safe to travel on.
Ironically, government officials sit on the same table with kidnappers and terrorists, negotiating ransoms and same is paid without delay whilst victims of the terrorists suffer.
Our present predicament is as a result of the thievery, massive corruption, societal and economic disorder. Insecurity in the country has shutdown businesses and chased out foreign investors.
Many families have been ruined, only God knows how they can overcome their numerous losses.
Like every other country, Nigeria’s future is in the hands of the children, but how can this be a reality when a so-called government that ought to protect them watches unconcernedly whilst they are being kidnapped, raped and killed by terrorists? The schoolchildren in kaduna, for instance, are still being held by their armed abductors.
We live under illusions, and our so-called leaders show no concern despite the high level of insecurity in the country.
These people, who claim to be leaders, ignore the rising security threats in the country and give support to Fulani herdsmen who have killed and maimed farmers.
The killers even have the audacity to claim responsibility for their atrocities, but with no consequences from a government that claims to protect lives and properties.
Meanwhile, the National Assembly, which ought to serve as a check on the incompetent Buhari, has been an active part of the complicity against the Nigerian people whose interests they were meant to represent in Abuja.
These days, all they do is to sabotage the people’s desire for good governance by protecting Buhari, a man who is unfit to lead a group of people ranging from two and above.
This set of dishonourable members have misrepresented Nigerians in all ramifications. They are only after their bellies and to siphon funds meant for constituency projects, pad the budget and take delivery of the latest cars at the detriment of the neglected people they fraudulently claim to represent.
Nigeria’s security architecture has been manipulated and thoroughly compromised by the saboteurs within the system and with the support of the government.
Insecurity in Nigeria is a tsunami that will soon consume everybody if nothing is done to avert it.
Our conscience has been sold off, so that people are now sympathising with terrorists, whilst those who oversee this historic incompetence are defended by illiterate and gullible Nigerians who claim to be majority.
Dictator Muhammadu Buhari, a cruel fanatic and bigot, gives more priority to his kinsmen than any other people. He pardons those who have been terrorising and killing law-abiding citizens.
Despite clear evidence against Fulani herdsmen, he has refused to proscribe them as a terrorist organisation.
The other day, Miyatti Allah came on national television and issued a series of threats, but dictator Buhari looked the other way, pretending to be blind from old age. People are tired of this RUGA government, and so secessionists have taken over the streets demanding to part ways with the terrible jungle created by dictator Buhari.
Wisdom can’t be so exhausted in the world that one will go for it in heaven.
Obviously, dictator Muhammadu Buhari has ran out of ideas, the National Assembly as matter of urgency should move a motion and proceed with the impeachment process of the incompetent president on behalf of 200 million Nigerians.
It is very unfortunate that the same people have subjected themselves as slaves to the executive. If not, we would have forgotten by now that Buhari was president in the recent past.
Terrorists have penetrated everywhere, and taken over some states. In fact, they’ve even hoisted their flag in some of the local government areas. Nigeria is now a wasteland, only those who are not scared of death might be lucky survive in it.
We are in a critical moment where a father abandons his wife and children to survive on their own.
The so-called “political will” is not working due to the failed system that harbours criminality.
It is time for all Nigerians to occupy Aso Rock and demand that dictator Muhammadu Buhari and his cohorts resign.
Opinion AddThis : Original Author : Buhari Olanrewaju Ahmed Disable advertisements :The Education Management Board of the Nigerian Baptist Convention has condemned the alleged media trial of Baptist Girls Academy by Ishaq Oloyede, Registrar of the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board.
A video had surfaced online of the registrar questioning a candidate from the school as regards the fees paid for JAMB registration in the school and the student was heard saying N8, 000.
Oloyede called on a teacher that had come with students of the school, who claimed the school charged N4, 700 for the JAMB fee as opposed to what the student said.
JAMB registration fee for the year 2021 is N3, 500, according to the JAMB registrar.
However, in a statement signed on Saturday by the Chairman, Education Management Board, of the Nigerian Baptist Convention, Oyesoji Aremu, the media trial of both the student and teacher was uncalled for.
Aremu stated that the school, as a private organisation charged N8, 000 not as registration fees but gave a breakdown of the fees as follows: JAMB Registration: N3,500; Novel (recommended and provided by JAMB): N500; CBT Charges: N700; Test Driller Software + installation (CBT Practice Kit): N2,000 and Transportation and feeding: N1,300.
He stated that it was disheartening to watch how the teacher, Kayode Oloyede, was humiliated when he was just on a scheduled assignment.
Aremu said the JAMB registrar ought to have investigated the matter, noting that the alleged excess fee was charged with the consent of the parents through the Parents Teachers' Association platform. “Ours is a private school not funded by the Government,” he said.
The statement read, “Baptist denomination, here and in other climes, is a pride to Christendom. This pride is rooted in legacies of training and values which every baptist is taken through. And by extension, the virtues and values which go with sound academic traditions are given to students in our schools nationally. Given this, Baptist Mission Schools abhor illicit and sharp practices; and the same is disallowed in their engagements within and outside.
“On the above premise, it was disheartening and disturbing watching a video clip that went viral since Wednesday, April 28, 2021, following the unscheduled tour of duty of the hardworking JAMB Registrar, Prof. Is-haq Oloyede. In the video clip, Prof. Oloyede assumed the role of a 'prosecutor and judge' against the defenceless teacher, Mr Kayode Oloyede, who was also on a scheduled assignment.
"Here, one of Mr Oloyede's students was the witness. In the video clip, the JAMB Registrar, Prof. Is-haq Oloyede publicly put on 'trial' Mr Oloyede, a teacher at Baptist Girls Academy. This put some questions on the social image of the teacher, and the public image of Baptist Mission Schools in Nigeria.
“The question of the alleged N8,000.00 collected by Baptist Girls Academy ought to have been properly investigated by the JAMB Registrar before subjecting the school and the teacher who took the girls out for Registration to emotional trial and public opprobrium.
“The School, Baptist Girls Academy did not charge N8, 000,00 for JAMB Registration as alleged by Prof. Oloyede. The breakdown of the charges that amounted to the alleged monetary infraction is as follows:
1. JAMB Registration: 3,500,
2. Novel (recommended and provided by JAMB): 500,
3. CBT Charges: 700,
4. Test Driller Software + installation (CBT Practice Kit): 2000 and
5. Transportation and feeding: 1,300.
“While the girl was 'correct' to have said the school collected N8,000.00, the undeniable fact was that the whole money was not meant for registration. Here, Prof. Oloyede did not allow the teacher to explain the breakdown. Rather, he was publicly muscled and emotionally debased. One is even tempted to ask: Is the teacher the spokesperson for the school?
“This is not in the interest of the teacher's psychology and the school's public image as Prof. Oloyede took delight in disparaging Baptist Girls Academy. It is also not too good for the JAMB Registrar to have made the poor girl to have confronted her teacher before the barrage of cameras.
“One, the poor girl would not want to continue to savour the memory. It was a bad one for her. The psychology of the teacher was also debased given the sociopsychological web (created by the action of the JAMB Registrar) between him and his girl-student. Methinks, Prof. Oloyede should have handled this much better. The emotion of the teacher is better imagined in such a situation when his student was made to confront him. That itself could breed disrespect and indiscipline in the school.
“Let me make it clear that the alleged money in excess of what the Registrar alluded to was charged with the consent of the parents through the Parents Teachers' Association platform. Ours is a private school not funded by the government. The question is, who pays for services to be rendered when such charges are not part of the termly school fee regime?
“Beyond what Prof. Oloyede made the public to believe by singling out one of the Baptist Mission Schools, it is in the public domain that other private schools in Nigeria charged fees that ranged between N10,000.00 and N25,000.00 (depending on services that will be provided during the examinations for the student). If the Registrar is in doubt of this, he is at liberty to deploy intelligence in this regard. What then is the fuss about Baptist Girls Academy?
“Here, our public leaders should endeavour to imbibe some soft skills while on a tour of duties. It is in the best interest of our society which is fast losing some virtues.
“While the JAMB Registrar is lauded for his quality assurance tour of duty as his practice every year, he is advised to show more discernment and restraint so as not to give wrong labels as his actions portrayed in the video clip that went viral.
“The best Prof. Oloyede could have done in the referred video clip, if he suspected any infractions behaviour by the school, was to have called the Proprietor of Baptist Mission Schools in Nigeria. After all, the popular Yoruba adage says, you don't know the owner of a dog and kill it. Or, draw the attention of the Ministry of Education, Lagos State to it. Public offices are supposed to be held in trust for all and in the best interest of all.”
