Victor Godwin, a Nigerian man, has called on the public to ensure justice for a five-year-old girl identified as Favour who is allegedly being abused by her relation.

In a terse message sent to SaharaReporters, the man called on child protection advocate groups to take up the matter and ensure justice is done.

Godwin said he witnessed as a woman related to the young girl abused her on numerous occasions, adding that the alleged abuser often boasts that no one can stop the abuse because she is the one taking care of the minor.

The man described the need to ensure justice for the girl as imperative, especially as according to him, the police have failed in the matter.

He wrote: "Please I need a child protection advocate to take up this case and help this child from the abusive relation. Favour is 5 years old and lives at no 8, New World Street in Calabar, Cross River State.

"She schools at Prince and Princess School, no 4, Imoh Street, opposite New World. I have witnessed this abuse many times. #Savefavour.

"I approached the woman and challenged her about it but she was without remorse; she told me she can do whatsoever she likes because she is the caregiver and this woman's husband cannot act as a man in the house despite the numerous and prevailing abuses on the young innocent child.

"Please, this child needs help as the police have failed. Please help us broadcast so human right activists can help him."

The remains of the deceased, who is said to be the owner of the collapsed building, was later recovered from the rubbles by emergency responders and deposited in the morgue of the General Hospital, Ikorodu.

According to a neighbour, construction work at the site had been suspended because of the Eid El Kabir celebration.

However, workers were said to be at work till late Monday evening.

Lagos State Acting Coordinator, National Emergency Management Agency, NEMA, Ibrahim Farinloye, who confirmed the incident attributed it to the inadequate timeline for the construction work.

“The cause of the collapse was suspected to be inadequate timeline to allow sand-filled land to compact properly before the commencement of construction and poor building materials, according to neighbours. Further investigations would be conducted by relevant agencies," Farinloye said.

The police in Zamfara State have rescued 100 captives abducted by bandits in the Dansadau area of Maru Local Government Area of the state.

The captives reportedly spent more than 40 days in the den of bandits before they were rescued on Monday.

Repentant bandits were said to have facilitated their release through a mediation brokered by the state government.

File photo used to illustrate story.

Police spokesperson in the state, SP Mohammed Shehu, told the BBC that kidnappers abducted the victims at Manawa village on June 8, and kept them at Kabaru forest for over 40 days.

“The rescue is one of the efforts the state command is making to protect the lives and properties of citizens.

“The rescue operation took that long out of the sheer number of the captives; it’s necessary for us to carefully apply tactics in order not to jeopardise the whole operation. And thank God that it went smoothly,” he said.

He said out of 100 persons rescued, 80 were with security agents so far, adding that the others were sick.

“The remaining 20 couldn’t make it to Gusau as they’re sick therefore we handed them over to their families who’ll take care of them," he added.

Human rights lawyer, Chief Mike Ozekhome (SAN), has accused the Muhammadu Buhari-led government of chasing shadow with the arrest of the Yoruba Nation agitator, Sunday Adeyemo, popularly known as Sunday Igboho and Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).

Ozekhome in a statement on Tuesday said Buhari’s administration abandoned AK-47-wielding armed bandits, Boko Haram terrorists, and other deadly insurgents, including ransom-taking kidnappers, only to be running after Igboho and Kanu.

Mike Ozekhome

The statement read, “The Federal government appears supersonically effective and efficacious when it comes to arresting and repatriating dissenters and challengers of its morbid nepotic and sectionalistic government.

“The same government paradoxically appears abysmally weak and hopelessly helpless when it comes to fighting AK-47-wielding armed bandits, Boko Haram and other deadly insurgents, including ransom-taking kidnappers who are almost kidnapping the very heart and soul of Nigeria on a daily basis. The Nigerian Nation appears captured by non-state actors."

He noted that the Nigerian government has shown a tendency to maintain two separate laws for two regions.

He continued, “To me, this lopsided template demonstrates acute intolerance and ambivalence. It shows self-contradiction. It shows an inclination towards enforcing laws against certain people, against certain classes of people, while at the same time turning away the other eye in enforcing laws against the other preferred and pampered set of people.

“Such does not make a nation grow. Such does not make democracy work. Such does not build confidence and inclusiveness, the very reasons for the Igbohos and Nnamdi Kanus of this world. Such does not enjoin patriotism and the building of nationhood.

“The same government that is suddenly effective in the case of Nnamdi Kanu and Sunday Igboho has never been able to capture kidnappers, armed bandits, and Boko Haram that are daily ravaging us, turning Nigeria into a sprawling field of human carnage. They take ransom. Innocent schoolchildren are paid for. Where is the same government when kidnappers are demanding that the parents of kidnapped children should now be feeding them in their kidnap dens?

“But, it suddenly becomes effective and audacious when it comes to arresting and even ambushing and attacking in their very homes, self-determination activists and crusaders. I am not impressed with this at all. The government may thump its chest for temporary gains. But, does this solve the problem? See this as merely pursuing butterflies while the house is on fire. Recall history: Major Kaduna Nzeogwu Chukwuma. Isaac Adaka Boro, Ken Saro-Wiwa. The Ogoni 5. Are we out of the woods? I do not think so. Or, do you?”

A Lagos-based human rights lawyer, Malcolm Omirhobo, has sued the Nigerian government over the country's membership of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC).

He asked the court to declare the membership illegal and terminate Nigeria’s association with the OIC.

Omirhobo also asked the court to restrain the Nigerian government from funding Nigeria’s membership of the organisation from the public purse.

The issue for determination raised in the suit is whether Sections 1(1), 10, and 42 (1) (a) (b) of the 1999 Nigerian Constitution (as amended) make it constitutional for the government to use public funds and the commonwealth of Nigerians to fund her membership of the OIC.

The lawyer also prayed the court to declare that the Nigerian government, the 36 states, and the federal capital territory will not adopt any religion as a state religion.

He sought for “a declaration of this honourable court that the OIC is not a secular global organisation like the United Nations, ECOWAS and the AU, but an Islamic body established to promote, protect and preserve Islamic interests and values for the benefit of Muslims worldwide.

“A declaration that Nigeria’s membership of the OIC, which is being funded, sustained, managed and run with public funds and/or the commonwealth of Nigerians by the 1st defendant is the adoption of Islam as the official religion of Nigeria and therefore improper, illegal, unlawful and unconstitutional.

“A declaration that Nigeria’s membership of the OIC with public funds is to the advantage, pride, prestige and privilege of Nigerian Muslims to the disadvantage, restriction and disabilities of Nigerians of other religions and therefore discriminatory, improper, illegal, unlawful and unconstitutional.”

In his affidavits supporting the application, Omirhobo said Nigeria is a multi-religious state.

He argued that apart from Islam and Christianity, there are other religions practised in Nigeria such as Buddhism, Hinduism, Judaism, Daoism, Atheism, Baha’i, Confucianism, Druze, Gnosticism, Jainism, Rastafarianism, Shinto, Sikhism, Zoroastrianism, Traditional African Religions, Eckist, Armocs, Grail Message, Voodism, among others

Thus, he said Nigeria’s membership of the OIC will represent the country as an Islamic state in the international community, instead of a secular state.

A date is yet to be fixed for the suit filed before a Federal High Court in Abuja.

The Coalition of Northern Groups (CNG) has reacted to the arrest of Yoruba freedom fighter, Sunday Adeyemo (Igboho).

In a statement issued by the coalition's spokesman, Abdul-Azeez Suleiman, the group urged the Nigerian government to immediately expose sponsors of groups clamouring for self-determination in the Southern part of the country.

Sunday Igboho

The group warned that the arrest of Igboho and that of Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra should not be taken as the end of the uprisings and disturbances over self-determination.

CNG said Igboho's arrest should serve as a lesson to followers 'who are instigated into setting fire to their own backyards whereas the instigators of such lawlessness and violence almost all the time have a fallback option that includes escaping abroad'.

The statement read, “From the outset, we wish to be categoric that the arrest of Igboho and Kanu should not be mistaken as bringing about the end to the uprisings and disturbances over self-determination perpetrated by southern Nigerian elites and governments who use thugs like Igboho and Kanu.

“We insist that rather than seeing the arrest as an end in itself, it should be the beginning of the processes for self-determination by any unit that wants to go.

“Therefore we insist on a peaceful referendum for separation from a people who would at the slightest of pretexts, attack, kill and destroy people of other regions and their properties, especially those from the North.

“The arrest of Igboho is government business and so long as it conforms with the principle of rule of law and international criminal justice procedures. We are not yet sure what he is going to be charged with, but expectedly incitement to violence against northerners would be one of them.

“We all know that threats of violent secession anywhere are a grave offence that no government will condone. From records of history, it is only northern Nigeria that has not called for the breakup of the country at the slightest of pretence.

“With the arrest of Kanu and now Igboho, we are hoping that government would go beyond prosecution to digging up and exposing their sponsors and the agenda behind them.

“While Kanu's case may be attributed to some form of insanity which was exploited by the South East elites who were playing a double game, Igboho is a deliberate and calculated, supported and encouraged attempt by the Yoruba leaders including their governments to scare the North into agreeing to cede power without competition.

“Unfortunately they took it too far by arming Igboho and setting him against law-abiding citizens from other regions particularly the North.

“The arrest if considered along with that of Kanu should serve as a lesson to those blind followers who are instigated into setting fire to their own backyards whereas the instigators of such lawlessness and violence almost all the time have a fallback option that includes escaping abroad.

“The two arrests also attest to the level of cross-regional cooperation that is working across Africa."

Ayo Adebanjo, the leader of Yoruba social-cultural group, Afenifere, has said President Muhammadu Buhari has declared war on Yoruba people following the Monday arrest of Sunday Adeyemo (Igboho).

SaharaReporters exclusively reported how Igboho was arrested in the Benin Republic on Monday night.

Ayo Adebanjo

This comes a few days after the Department of State Service declared him wanted.

On July 1, his residence was raided by operatives of the DSS, who confirmed killing two people and making several arrests.

Igboho’s allies said seven people were killed during the raid and the DSS evacuated all bodies.

Adebanjo told Peoples Gazette on Tuesday afternoon that Adeyemo should not be allowed to suffer alone for fighting for the liberation of the Yoruba.

“Yoruba worldwide should take to the streets to make sure that Sunday Igboho is not brought back to Nigeria and if they bring him back, the Yoruba should ensure that he is not badly tortured or worse. They have declared war on our people.” See Also Breaking News EXCLUSIVE: Yoruba Freedom Fighter, Sunday Igboho Arrested in Cotonou

The Afenifere leader said Yoruba youth should rise and demand a restructuring of the country, first with the adoption of an equitable Constitution that will be written by all constituents that make up the country.

He continued, “Freedom is never given, it is always won. People are too afraid of this regime and we have said it over and over that they should be bold to confront them and take back their country.

“They are ruling us with a Constitution that we did not make. It is a military Constitution and they have been rejecting all efforts to adopt a new Constitution, including the 2014 national conference,” he said.

Adeyemo’s arrest came three weeks after the regime abducted the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, Nnamdi Kanu in Kenya and forcibly removed him to Nigeria. Kanu was travelling with his British passport when the attack occurred, and the UK government has said efforts were underway to extract an explanation from Nigerian authorities. Yomi Alliyu, the lead counsel to the Yoruba Nation activist, Sunday Adeyemo, otherwise known as Sunday Igboho, has said that it was the International Criminal Police Organisation which arrested Igboho alongside his wife, Ropo, in Cotonou, Benin Republic.

Alliyu revealed this in a statement on Tuesday.

Sunday Igboho

According to him, the Federal Government of Nigeria through INTERPOL got Adeyemo aka Sunday Igboho, who is a German citizen, and his wife arrested on Monday night at an airport in Benin Republic, one of Nigeria’s neighbouring countries in the West African sub-region.

Igboho was arrested while he tried to catch a flight to Germany with his wife.

The senior advocate urged the government of Germany, Benin Republic and the international community “to rise up and curb the impunity of the Nigerian Government by refusing any application for extradition of our Client who already has application before the International Criminal Court duly acknowledged”.
