The Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi, has called on the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission to go beyond merely arresting cyber criminals by rehabilitating them.

The Ooni made the call while playing host to an EFCC delegation from the South West Zonal Office of the commission on Wednesday in Ile-Ife, according to the News Agency of Nigeria.

Ogunwusi, who decried the alarming rate of cybercrimes among Nigerian youths, posited that some of the perpetrators were ignorant of their actions and the consequences.

He said, “While I support your absolute clampdown on criminals in the private and public sectors, I will charge the commission to work on the rehabilitation of those found guilty, especially our youths caught committing cybercrimes.

“Engage them to let them know that you are not their enemy.

“Carry them along through your sensitisation programmes so that they will see reasons to join you in your attempt to create a better Nigeria.

“If you engage and utilise their potentials, you will spend less on fighting crimes.”

A robbery suspect in Ondo State has escaped from hospital with handcuffs while receiving treatment for injuries he sustained when a mob pounced on him earlier.

The suspect, who was handed over to the police after his arrest by residents of Ikare Akoko in the Akoko North East Local Council Area of the state, was said to have escaped from hospital on Tuesday when community members approached the police for his whereabouts.

Angered by the situation, the residents took to the streets on Wednesday to protest the development.

The protesters shut down business activities for several hours and blocked major roads leading into the community in response to the situation.

The demonstrators accused policemen in the community of aiding and abetting criminals in the area.

They called for the redeployment of the Area Commander in-Charge of the Command, Razak Rauf.

Emmanuel Egunjobi, one of the protesting residents, who spoke to SaharaReporters, decried the sad development.

He said, “For some time, we have been attacked by criminals in this community especially at night.

“So, to address this, we decided to set up a vigilante group to secure our area since the police had failed to protect us.

“On Sunday, we caught one of these hoodlum who had disturbing our community and handed him to the police.

“The police claimed they needed to first take him to the hospital for treatment as a result of the injuries he suffered at the time of his arrest.

“But on Tuesday when we visited the police, we were told that the robber had escaped from the hospital with handcuffs.

“The question is, how did a robber chained and handcuffed to the bed escape from the hospital?

“This is unacceptable and we are giving the Area Commander seven days to produce the fleeing robber or leave this community.”

SaharaReporters could not immediately reach Rauf on Wednesday evening as his mobile number was switched off.

But spokesperson for the Ondo State Police Command, Femi Joseph, said he was not aware of the matter when contacted on the telephone.

Mixed reactions have trailed the decision by Nigeria to pull out of the ongoing World Economic Forum in Cape Town, South Africa, and also the recall of its high commissioner, Kabiru Bala, over fresh xenophobic attacks on Nigerians and other African migrants.

Commending the move on Twitter, a user with the handle @excafagha said, “Good step! We want more.

“The South African Government and the people of South Africa have not done enough to stop xenophobia.”

Also reacting to the development, another user @m_atoshi, said, “Step in the right direction. Send planes to bring back as many as are willing to come back.”

Another user, @columbuse_a, said, “That's the first phase to show displeasure or disagreement with a host country.

“The next is to send their high commissioner parking.”

But unimpressed by the move, a user, @Tonito said, “What is there to see? A half-hearted, belated response after massive outrage by Nigerians.”

The Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation is relocating its oil trading subsidiary to Dubai from London, United Kingdom, according to Reuters.

Four sources revealed that the change of territory is driven by a need to get closer to its main buyers in Asia.

The move was also brought on by the intent to cut down on taxes.

Duke Oil Services, the London arm of the Panamanian registered firm, said in a filing made to the UK’s company house that it would wind down operations in the second quarter of 2019 and move to an unspecified location.

The fully owned NNPC subsidiary, which was established in the 1980s to help sell Nigeria’s petroleum, had been based in London’s Hammersmith neighbourhood, which houses NNPC’s UK office as well.

The choice of Dubai comes as the United States began pumping 12m barrels of oil per day, claiming Nigeria’s markets in Europe and competing with the West African producer in Asia as well.

While the US spent six years developing the capacity to produce at the same level with Saudi Arabia, Nigeria has for a long time hovered around the 1.7 to 2m barrels per day threshold.

The country has also failed to add to its reserves within the same period the US took over its market share and stopped importing from the country.

According to Reuters, India is Nigeria’s new bride and Asian refineries are buying Nigeria’s oil and swapping it for the much needed petrol the country’s refineries are unable to produce.

Two factions of the National Association of Nigerian Students on Wednesday in Abuja engaged each other in a brawl over plans by the South African High Commission to sponsor some of them to the country.

President of National Youth Council of Nigeria, Bello Shagari, who led the group, was in company with the President of Students Union Government of the University of Abuja.

Acting South African High Commissioner, Bobby Moroe, after a meeting with the students’ leaders said his country was planning to engage Nigerian youth on a cultural exchange visit.

He said the motive behind the visit was to further tighten the existing relationship between Nigeria and South Africa.

Moroe noted that the trip would enable the NANS members meet with their South African counterparts as part of measures to resolve attacks on Nigerians in South Africa.

However, trouble started when President of NANS, Danielson Akpan, and other executive members stormed the South African High Commission and claimed to be the authentic representatives of students in Nigeria.

He said those invited for the meeting were impostors and not the executive members of NANS.

He berated the group for tarnishing the image of the student union and for accepting such offer while their compatriots were being killed in South Africa.

Akpan’s faction thereafter descended on members of the other group, who had been inside the high commission building early.

It took the timely intervention of the police to arrest the situation.

Shop owners at the Shoprite outlet at Jakande, Lekki in Lagos, are counting their losses after an angry mob stormed the place and looted several times.

During a visit to the place on Wednesday, SaharaReporters came across embittered shop owners, who claimed to have lost their entire wares as a result of the invasion of the mall by the irate mob.

One trader, who asked not to be named, said, “They should please help us, let the management verify our identities. I am very bitter --they looted everything and not one thing is remaining in my shop.

“They assured us that nothing will happen, this morning I went there and everything in my shop is gone.”

A salesgirl with a popular restaurant identified as Beauty, said, “They sent a text message for us to come but why are they not letting us in. This is really terrible because our businesses have been affected.”

Disenchanted Nigerians took to the streets on Tuesday and Wednesday to protest and retaliate xenophobic attacks on Nigerians living in South Africa by destroying businesses with connection to South Africans.

On Tuesday, one person was shot dead by the police in the ensuing chaos that greeted the Shoprite outlet in Jakande.
