Some landlords at Alabere Oloruntele Community in Oke-Igbo, Ile-Oluji/Oke-Igbo Local Government Area of Ondo State, have pleaded with the state government to rescue them from environmental degradation in view of torrential rainfall in the state.

Spokesperson for the community, Mr Kolawole Oyekunle, told SaharaReporters on Friday that the problem was being caused by an illegal construction of a structure on a road leading to their community.

Oyekunle noted that the environmental problem had led to the damage of several buildings in the area.

He expressed fear that the community might be submerged due to illegal dredging, erection of building on the setback and land reclamation if government failed to take urgent step to save their properties.

He said, "We have to quickly cry out now because some buildings are being destroyed as a result of this incident and it's still raining heavily. We need to avoid a looming disaster.

"We need to call the attention of the government to this considering the landscape and ecological challenges of the communities which has rugged hilly terrains and other geomorphic features."

According to him, officials of the Ondo State Ministry of Lands and Housing had been notified on several occasions but were only feigning ignorance to their plight.

He said, "We want the intervention of these regulatory bodies of the Federal Government to make sure that things are in order and lives and properties of people are safe."

When contacted, Deputy Director of Ondo State Ministry of Physical Planning and Urban Development; Mr Ajanaku Osolaja, said the government was taking steps to address the environmental issue and would be meeting the communities soon.

The Coalition of United Political Parties has berated the Nigerian Government over the arrest of its spokesperson, Ikenga Imo Ugochinyere, on Thursday.

Addressing journalists on Friday, head of CUPP Contact and Mobilisation and National Chairman of Action Alliance Party, Kenneth Udeze, demanded that Ugochinyere be released immediately and unconditionally.

He said, "The Nigeria Police must learn to obey the direct order of the court. That is how democracy is practiced. Rule of law and constitutional democracy demand that the court must be obeyed by every person or authority which is before it."

The CUPP alleged that Ugochinyere's arrest was instigated by Speaker of the House of Representatives, Femi Gbajabiamila, over a matter that is in court and for which the court had directly and in clear terms restrained the police from arresting or detaining him in any manner.

He was arrested at the INEC headquarters while attending a meeting in preparation for his party’s primaries for the Edo and Ondo governorship elections.

"It is a shame that in Femi Gbajabiamila’s democracy, the orders of court should not be obeyed and nobody should question his supreme authority. Otherwise how would Mr Gbajabiamila who was represented in court on Wednesday June 17, 2020 in the same suit where the court had nullified the resolution of the House and his actions still go in defiance of the court to author a petition to the police?

"The police have been served with the order of the court and all other processes in the matter and indeed yesterday before the arrest, the bailiff of the court had also served another hearing notice on the police notifying them of the next adjourned date which is 30th June, 2020. The DG DSS has filed his processes and appeared in court but the Inspector-General Police has refused to file anything or appear in court. We do not want to believe that he is being teleguided," CUPP said.  See Also Breaking News BREAKING: Police Arrest CUPP Spokesperson, Ugochinyere, On Orders Of House Of Reps Speaker, Gbajabiamila Over Infectious Disease Bill

The coalition further said that the harassment of Ugochinyere was manifesting following his stance against the controversial sponsorship of the Control of Infectious Diseases Bill, adding that it must stop.

The CUPP, however, called on the leadership of All Progressives Congress to call Gbajabiamila to order, adding, "The leadership of APC should call him to order now or the membership of the House should immediately take action and save the House further battering of its image by impeaching Mr Gbajabiamila.

It added, "Despite the nullification of the proceedings of the ad hoc committee and the resolutions of the House by the FCT High Court, the Speaker continued to misdirect the House to the extent of intimidating Justice Taiwo Taiwo of the Federal High Court Abuja who has now recused himself from the case based on the verbal assault from Mr Gbajabiamila’s goons.

"It is the demand of the CUPP that Ikenga Imo Ugochinyere be released immediately and unconditionally. The Nigeria Police must learn to obey the direct order of the court. That is how democracy is practiced. Rule of law and constitutional democracy demand that the court must be obeyed by every person or authority which is before it."

The leadership of the All Progressives Congress has declared that the party has no leadership vacuum despite the alleged ex parte order granted in favour of Victor Giadom, its Deputy National Secretary.

The party disclosed this on Friday in Abuja in a statement by its National Publicity Secretary,  Mallam Lanre Issa-Onilu.

The party maintained that there was no leadership vacuum in the fold as being speculated in certain quarters.

The statement reads, "We assure our teeming members that the APC has no leadership vacuum. By the constitution of the party, Senator Ajimobi has assumed the role of National Chairman following the decision of the Court of Appeal upholding the interlocutory injunction suspending the National Chairman from office.

"Majority of members of the NWC are determined to preserve our party’s zero tolerance for impunity and will continue to uphold the law in fulfillment of the mandate given to us by members of our great party."

The party insisted that none of the four defendants named on the order obtained by Giadom were served with the originating processes in the suit.

The statement added that the party became aware of the existence of the purported order on June 17, 2020 through its circulation on social media.

It stated, "In furtherance of the above and complying with Article 14.2 (iii) of the APC constitution, Senator Ajimobi assumed the position of acting National Chairman on March 13, 2020. Article 14.2 (iii) provides: The Deputy National Chairman shall act as National Chairman in the absence of the National Chairman from his zone.

"In essence, there was no vacancy to fill on the said March 16, 2020 as Senator Ajimobi had already assumed the role of Acting National Chairman."

The Peoples Democratic Party has granted Edo State governor, Godwin Obaseki, and his deputy, Philip Shaibu, a waiver to fly the party’s flag in the September 19 governorship election in the state.

SaharaReporters gathered that leaders of the party have pleaded with other aspirants vying to get the party' ticket to step down for the governor.

Obaseki was disqualified by his former party, All Progressives Congress, from seeking re-election on the grounds that he possesses “defective academic qualifications.”

He later announced his resignation from the APC and joined the PDP on Friday.

The Peoples Democratic Party has demanded the immediate and unconditional release of spokesperson for the Coalition of United Political Parties, Ikenga Imo Ugochinyere, by the police allegedly on the orders of Speaker of the House of Representatives, Femi Gbajabiamila.

The party decried the arrest of the CUPP spokesperson in defiance of a subsisting court order barring such as a direct affront to the judiciary, an assault on Nigeria's democratic practice and a violation of Ugochinyere’s rights as guaranteed by the 1999 constitution  (as amended).

In a statement signed by spokesperson for the PDap, the party said, "In demanding his release, our party is deeply worried by reports that the CUPP spokesperson is being detained under very dehumanizing condition where he is also allegedly being tortured.

"The PDP insists that, without prejudice to the issues between the leadership of the House of Representatives and the CUPP, for which the two parties were before a court, resorting to using the police to arrest and detain the CUPP spokesperson, in defiance of the orders of the court, is completely unacceptable, unlawful and cannot be justified under any guise whatsoever.

"Our party charges the presiding officers of the APC-led House of Representatives to note that Nigeria is a democratic state, governed by law which creates no space for the whims and caprices of dictatorial, oppressive and vindictive individuals, who has no regard for rules.

"The APC leaders in the House of Representatives should therefore respect the sanctity of the judiciary and the provisions of the law by following due process in dealing with issues, particularly those guaranteed by the constitution.

"The PDP therefore calls on the Inspector-General of Police to wade into the matter, insulate the police from the political manipulation of the APC leadership, by immediately ordering the release of the CUPP spokesperson in keeping with the demands of the tenets of democracy, rule of law and provision of 1999 constitution."

A civil society group, Concerned Nigerians, has described the arrest and detention of spokespeeaon for the Coalition of United Political Parties, Ikenga Imo Ugochinyere, as unconstitutional and a violation of the Nigerian constitution.

In a letter to the Inspector-General of Police, Mohammed Adamu, the group said Ugochinyere's arrest was carried out in direct disrespect and disregard for court orders.

The letter, which was signed by Comrade Deji Adeyanju, Convener of the group, urged the IGP to comply with these rulings and order the immediate release of the CUPP spokesperson from detention.  Ikenga Ugochinyere

The letter reads, “We are constrained to call your attention to an order given by Honourable Justice O. A. Musa of the High Court of the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja in the matter of Ikenga Imo Ugochinyere v Hon Femi Gbajabiamila & Ors, FCT/HC/BW/CV/120/2020, where the court reiterated the order of Justice Taiwo Taiwo of the Federal High Court and further restrained the Inspector-General of Police and the Director-General of the State

“Mr Ugochinyere's arrest was carried out in direct disrespect and disregard for the orders of court, and constitutes a display of disregard for the judiciary that has become all too common in our democracy.

"He is currently detained in deplorable conditions in a tiny cell with as many as 38 other people. In the current situation where the entire world is worried about the spread of the novel Coronavirus, these conditions present severe threat to Mr Ugochinyere's health.

“You will recall that upon assumption of office, and several times since, you have stated your intention to ensure that the Nigerian Police displays respect for the judiciary by complying with all orders of the courts at all times.

“It is on this basis that we call on you to use your good offices t’o cause compliance with these orders of court and order Mr. Ugochinyere's immediate release from detention.”

Prof Oyewusi Ibidapo-Obe, a former Vice Chancellor of the University of Lagos, has condemned the reduction of the cut-off marks for admissions into universities in Nigeria by the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board.

The Registrar of the board, Prof Ishaq Oloyede, had set 160 as the cut-off mark for admission into Nigerian universities for the 2020/2021 academic session, 120 for polytechnics while the minimum benchmark for colleges of education and other innovative institutions was 100.

Speaking with SaharaReporters, Ibidapo-Obe said the reduction in cut-off marks would directly reduce the quality of education and graduates tertiary institutions would produce.

He stated that if the minimum was pegged at 250 or 200, it would greatly improve the quality of education in the country.  Prof Oyewusi Ibidapo-Obe

He said, "For me as a person, I would not take anything less than 200, because 200 seems to be a reasonable cut-off point.

"You would see that most of the well-established universities don’t take anything less than 200. I think they should aspire to do more and again, when you look at it from another point of view, you have a sufficient space for all the participants to be able to take what they want. If a qualifying exam does not have some level of a minimum standard, then it is not worth it.

"In other words, all that the law requires is to take that exam and to ensure that we keep some standard within the system. The private universities are not too happy about it.”

The ex-UNILAG VC advised the education body in the country to encourage Nigerian students to try out other tertiary institutions if they fail to make the right cut-off mark to gain admission to the universities.

"If we want to raise our standard, we should say 200. If candidates don't make 200 in the UTME, they should go to other tertiary education providers. The fact that you go to polytechnic or School of Nursing does not mean you will not get a university degree.

"It is not a death sentence (if you don’t meet the cut-off mark). The way we do it here, the reasoning is that if you don't go to the university, that is the end of your life, that should not be the approach.

"If you don't go to the university now, don't worry, you can go to other tertiary institutions and still join the university later when you have improved your skills and your scholarly technique is much better," he said.

Prof Ibidapo-Obe added, "When you look at the Nigeria population and you look at the number that wants to go to university, it is not high. Sometimes, the total number of people that take the exam are less than 1.5m compared with our population.

"We need to increase our capacity to take more students but what is fundamental is not capacity for quantity; it is the quality and that quality will have to start from somewhere.

"If the minimum goes up to 200 or 250, the quality will also go up. If the minimum goes down, the quality will also go down but I prefer that we have a high quality and we encourage and provide other areas that people who do not meet the cut-off point can go to."

A non-governmental organisation, Dan Alhaji Foundation, has called on the Nigerian Government and international organisations to support victims of violent attacks and rape and provide them with relief materials.

The foundation lamented the horrible living conditions in Internally Displayed Peraons camps in Northern part of the country.

Founder of the organisation, Sadia H, who addressed protesters on Thursday in Abuja, said many victims particularly women and children lacked adequate medical care, food and shelter.

She said many of the victims could not access their farms, which has been taken over by bandits and have no alternative means of livelihoods.

Saida appealed to the government at all levels, private organisations and the international community to come to their aid and  provide them with basic necessity of life such as food and medical supplies.

She said, "We are creating awareness on the deplorable condition of the victims of violent attacks in the North and the need for government to assist and compensate them.

"Because their means of livelihood is just farming and they cannot go to farm again, the attackers have stolen their properties and they have nothing as we we speak."

She narrated how over 50 people were killed by bandits in Danka and Zawa villages in Katsina State and the entire places burnt down.

"We want the whole world to know what these people are passing through especially Basari LGA in Katsina," she added.
