Godswill Akpabio, the senator representing Akwa Ibom North-West district in the National Assembly, has lost his bid to secure a seat in the house beyond May 2019.
Akpabio had dumped the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) less than one year ago and pitched his tent with the All Progressives Congress (APC), under which he ran for reelection into the red chamber.
With his large following, his defeat came as a surprise, especially considering the margin of more than 60,000 votes.
Akpabio secured a disappointing 67,487 votes against 136,373 votes polled by Chris Ekpenyong of the PDP.

President Muhammadu Buhari, candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), is poised to win Nigeria’s 2019 presidential election.
According to results seen by SaharaReporters at 67% results determination status, Buhari has polled more than 11million votes, and the figure will yet rise — with 33% of the results yet to be seen — while Atiku Abubakar, his closest challenger and candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has more than 7million votes.
Atiku lost both in Kano and Lagos, the two states with the highest voting population.
At this rate, there is high likelihood that Buhari may defeat Atiku by a margin of more than 2million, but it may not be as high as the 2.6million votes with which Buhari defeated then incumbent Goodluck Jonathan in 2015.
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) is still announcing the results at its national collation headquarters in Abuja, and is expected to formally declare Buhari re-elected on Tuesday morning.
The PDP, though, has already rejected the result, branding INEC’s figures “incorrect and unacceptable to our party”.

Akwa Ibom Progressives Coalition, a socio-political group, says the elections conducted in the state on Saturday were marred by violence and harassment of voters.
In a press statement signed by Akpan Udo Solomon, its General Secretary, and issued on Monday, the group also decried the conduct of official of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and security agencies during the elections.
The group said the conduct of elections in Nigeria has “retrogressed from the stride of the 2015 elections”.
The statement read: “Akwa Ibom witnessed several incidents of voter intimidation, violence, and other untoward activities that marred elections in many polling units and areas that were seen to be loyal to the opposition across the length and breadth of the state, and these were either initiated or helped along by the INEC, the various state security apparatus, as well as other unscrupulous elements.
“You will recall that the main opposition party in the State, the All Progressives Congress (APC), had earlier raised an alarm over the establishment of a parallel security agency by the State Government to prosecute its election-winning agenda, as well as the influx of thugs and militants into the state from neighbouring states, allegedly sponsored by the current state government, led by the PDP Governor, Emmanuel Udom; while a few arrests were made ahead of the elections, the bulk of these militants and thugs remained and were properly kitted in police and military gears and wantonly transported across the state in security-branded vehicles, allegedly provided by the state government, to intimidate APC voters and disrupt the voting process.
“Some of the incidents that were reported by the press and other independent observers include massive cancellations of results from polling units in opposition party strongholds. For instance, in Ikono Local Government, one of the strongholds of the main opposition party (the APC), results from 73 out of 144 polling units were cancelled for no reason at all. Also, in Ward 6, results from 9 out of 10 units were illegally cancelled, leaving just about 200 registered voters to decide the fate of more about 6000 registered voters in the ward!”
The group claimed that in many polling units, card readers were turned off to allow for manual accreditation. It said this was to perfect the rigging tactics of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), the ruling party in the state.
Meanwhile, Atiku Abubakar, presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), is in clear lead from results trickling out of the state.
Also, there were reports earlier that Godswill Akpabio, a senatorial candidate under the flag of All Progressives Congress (APC), might have lost his seat at the Senate to Christopher Ekpenyong, the PDP senatorial candidate and former Deputy Governor of Akwa Ibom State.
However, INEC has suspended the announcement of results in Akwa Ibom North-West District, where Akpabio represents.

Abiola Ajimobi, outgoing Governor of Oyo State, has accepted the outcome of National Assembly election result, in which he lost his bid to represent Oyo South senatorial district.
Ajimobi lost to Kola Balogun of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
The two-term Governor lost to Kola Balogun of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
Ajimobi polled 92,579 votes, while Balogun secured 105,720 votes.
The PDP candidate won in Ibadan North, Ibadan North-West, Ibadan South-East, Ibadan North-East, Ibarapa North and Ibarapa East, while Ajimobi won in Ibarapa Central, Ibadan South-West and Ido Local Government Areas.
A statement by Bolaji Tunji, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Communication and Strategy, on Monday, thanked the people of Oyo State for supporting the All Progressives Congress (APC).
He also congratulated the APC and its candidates in the state, who picked nine out of the available 14 Federal Constituency seats and two out of the three senatorial seats.
Ajimobi said: “We appreciate our people for coming out last Saturday, which led to APC winning two, out of the three senatorial and nine out of the 14 Federal Constituency, seats in the state.
“The victory has shown the unassailable leadership of the APC in Oyo State. It has also shown that our people are appreciative of the developmental strides of the APC in the state and the country at large.
“We have taken Oyo State to an unprecedented level in terms of massive infrastructural renewal. Most importantly, we have ensured peace in the state.”
Speaking on the loss of the chance to represent the APC in the Senate, he added: “The results of the Oyo South Senatorial District election have been released by INEC (Independent National Electoral Commission) indicating that I lost to the PDP (Peoples Democratic Party) candidate.
“I hereby accept the result as announced. Although there were a number of grievous infractions and established electoral malpractices, I have decided to let go in the interest of peace. I, therefore, congratulate the declared winner, Hon Kola Balogun and our APC Senators-elect, Abdulfatai Buhari and Teslim Folarin.
“If I lose the ticket and the party was able to gain, then it is nothing to feel sad about. APC has done well but we can always do better. If we won two out of the three Senatorial seats and we picked nine out of 14 federal constituency seats, then we should congratulate ourselves.
“To the teeming members and supporters of our party who came out in their thousands to show their preference for the APC, I thank and urge you to keep the faith especially as we look forward to the governorship and the House of Assembly elections.
“With the impressive results we currently have, we should proudly go forth with greater sense of confidence and unity of purpose. Let us work together to ensure victory for our governorship candidate, Chief Adebayo Adelabu, and all our candidates for the House of Assembly.”

Christopher Henry Smith, a US representative and ranking member of the House Subcommittee on Africa, has expressed concerns about the credibility of the Nigeria's presidential election.
This was contained in a statement issued by the US representative on Sunday.
Smith said officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in states like Anambra, Enugu, Ebonyi, Imo and Abia are under pressure to alter election results.
He said: “Yesterday, Nigeria voted. Today, votes are being counted. I am very concerned by credible reports that the vote is being tampered with. To avoid any manipulation of the tally, it is critical that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) announce without delay actual results — which are certified by party agents and observers — at each polling unit as the vote is tabulated.
“Well-placed sources report that in some states and localities — including Anambra, Enugu, Ebonyi, Imo, Abia — INEC commissioners are receiving enormous pressure to alter poll results. This must not be allowed to happen.
“The eyes of the United States, of Africa, and the world are upon Nigeria and INEC. I also ask Secretary Michael Pompeo to hold accountable anyone who seeks to cheat the Nigerian people — who have waited patiently — of their vote or foments violence.”

Atiku Abubakar, presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), soundly defeated President Muhammadu Buhari of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Adamawa State, securing 410,266 votes to his opponent’s 378,072.
However, after the figures were announced one local government after another, the APC agent rejected Atiku’s victory in three local governments — Numan, Michika and Madagali — arguing that since the first had been plagued by herdsmen and the other two by Boko Haram, it was impossible to get such huge population of voters with Permanent Voter cards (PVCs).
He insisted that the results were made up. However, he did not have the support of other political parties.
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), meanwhile, has already accepted the result and is on the verge of making an official declaration of the winner at state level.

Yakubu Dogara, the incumbent Speaker of the House of Representatives, has issued a victory statement after he secured a return to the House of Representatives.
The lawmaker, representing Bogoro/Dass/Tafawa Balewa Federal Constituency at the House of Representatives, shared the statement on Twitter on Sunday.
He dedicated his victory to God and members of his constituency, whom he thanked for helping him break the jinx of the failure of presiding officers of the Senate and House of reps to secure re-election..
He wrote: “I dedicate this victory to God first and our ever peace-loving and resilient people of Bogoro/Dass/Tafawa Balewa Federal Constituency who defied all odds to return me to @HouseNGR for an unprecedented 4th term.
“By their uncommon courage, sacrifice and patience in the face of unwarranted provocation, threat and intimidation and attempts to subvert their will by undemocratic forces, they have made history today in Nigeria by breaking a jinx that has plagued the @HouseNGR since 1st Assembly as no presiding officer (both Speaker & Deputy Speaker) has ever been re-elected to the House.
“Bogoro/Dass/Tafawa Balewa has also set a record as the first in Bauchi State to return a member to @HouseNGR for fourth consecutive term.
“Thanks to many friends and supporters who contributed immensely in making this history possible.”
Dogara polled 73,609 votes to defeat Dalhatu Kantana of the All Progressives Congress (APC), who scored 50,078 votes.
