The Nigerian Government through the Department of State Services (DSS) has accredited only ten media organisations for the coverage of the trial of the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) slated for Monday, July 26th.

Kanu, who was re-arrested in controversial circumstances in faraway Kenya, will be facing charges bordering on terrorism, treasonable felony, illegal possession of arms, among others, before Justice Binta Nyako of the Federal High Court in Abuja.

DSS, which has kept Kanu in its custody, restricted the number of media organisations to cover the trial to 10, to limit its coverage.

Those accredited include Daily Post, Premium Times, Thisday, The Nation, The Herald, and Daily Independent newspapers while the Nigerian Television Authority (NTA) is leading the broadcast side.

Other broadcast media are Channels Television, Africa Independent Television, and TVC.

Also, the hearing of enforcement of fundamental rights suit filed by the five activists arrested at Dunamis International Gospel Centre (Glory Dome) by DSS operatives on July 4 will come up before Justice Obiora Egwuatu.

The trial judge had ordered the DSS to produce the activists in court on July 26th while ruling on the ex parte motion filed by their lawyer, Pelumi Olajengbesi.

SaharaReporters had reported how DSS operatives on Sunday blocked all the roads leading to the court and prevented human and vehicular movements in the area.

Meanwhile a human rights activist, Omoyele Sowore has described the action of DSS to censor and limit the media coverage of the trial as an affront and crime on the press freedom, adding that the DSS has no right to accredit journalists covering the trial.

He stated this in a post on his Twitter handle and Facebook page: "DSS has no right to accredit journalists covering #FreeDunamis5 #FreeNnamdiKanuNow. Lawless DSS has 'accredited' only 10 media houses to cover @MaziNnamdiKanu’s trial, it will be a shame and a crime against #freepress for any independent news source to apply to DSS for accreditation. This is highly condemnable and embarrassing! #BuhariMustGo #RevolutionNow.

"These media houses must withdraw from this sabotage of free press. The DSS has no right to engage in the accreditation of media houses to cover a public trial in a Federal High Court in Nigeria. The judiciary should be ashamed that its independence has been compromised completely by the executive."

Human rights activist, Omoyele Sowore has lambasted the Department of State Services (DSS) for accrediting only 10 media houses for the July 26 coverage of the trial of Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the proscribed Indigenous Peoples of Biafra (IPOB), in an Abuja court.

Kanu is facing charges of terrorism and treasonable felony, among others, brought against him by the Nigerian Government.

Sowore described the action of the DSS, which is Nigeria's secret police, as a shame and a crime against freedom of the press in a democratic country.

The lawyers representing Kano cleric, Sheikh Abduljabbar Nasiru Kabara, enmeshed in a case of alleged blasphemy, have called on the Kano state governor, Abdullahi Ganduje to desist from issuing disturbing utterances against their client.

The call was made by Barrister M Bakaro, the head of the legal team representing Kajara in a press conference on Sunday evening in Kano.

Governor Abdullahi Ganduje of Kano State

He also alleged that Ganduje had compared the cleric to Boko Haram militants and a controversial preacher in the past, Maitatsine.

Bakaro, as well as other members of the legal team, noted that the statements of the state government are prejudicial and a threat to the course of justice for Kajara.

According to him, there are pending cases before the State and Federal High Courts as well as the Upper Sharia Court that should restrict the governor as the state's Chief Executive from making utterances viewed as prejudicial and a threat to the course of justice as it relates to their client.

He also described the process of the arrest of the scholar as a violation of the proper legal procedure.

According to him, the governor wrongly ordered the cleric's arrest, took him to court by 7:30 pm on the same day and later detained him in a Correctional Centre in Kano.

He said the action contravenes the law.

"On Monday, 19th July 2021, the Governor of Kano state in the midst of some religious personalities made statements implying the following: He linked our client (Sheikh Abduljabbar Nasiru Kabara) with the dreaded Maitatsine and the Boko Haram.

"He admitted making the order for the detention of our client at the Nigerian Correctional Centre, Kano. The order which ought to have been made by the court before which our client is standing trial in case No. CR/1/2021. Likewise, the governor made a statement giving direction to the cause of the trial that is yet to commence before the Upper Sharia Court.

"He concluded that our client has abused the personality of the Holy Prophet of Islam (S) notwithstanding that it is a subject matter of a case pending before a court of law for determination which our client pleaded not guilty to.

"He denied our client his right to freedom of religion, thought and expression by accusing him of deviating from the view of Saudi Arabia Salafy scholars (which to the Governor shall be adhered to since it came from Saudi Arabia) despite the pendency of the case with suit No. FHC/KN/CS/145/2021 at the Federal High Court in which our client seeks to enforce his fundamental rights of religion, thought and expression as enshrined in the Constitution of Nigeria," Bakaro stated.

The team of lawyers called on the Kano state governor to desist from further interfering in the course of judicial process as all the issues are now before various courts of law.

They also urged all stakeholders including the International Bar Association, Nigerian Bar Association, civil society organisations and security agencies in Nigeria to closely monitor the activities of Ganduje in relation to the cases and ensure that justice is not only done, but seen to have been done to their client.

Yoruba Nation agitator, Sunday Adeyemo, popularly known as Sunday Igboho once said any attempt by young men of the South-West to protect themselves from killer herders will have grievous consequences as it will draw the wrath of President Muhammadu Buhari, who is Fulani.

In a 2019 video obtained by SaharaReporters, Igboho predicted that the Buhari-led government will frown on efforts by Yoruba people to protect themselves even though the government had not tried to stop the activities of Boko Haram militants in the North.

Igboho, in the video, stated this as the reason for his refusal to defend Yorubaland despite the role he played in the Ife-Modakeke crisis.

He added that there are also people from his ethnic nationality who are likely to betray him if he doesn't apply wisdom in the agitations.

He noted that if truly Yoruba leaders want to stop the killings by Fulani herdsmen, they should convene a meeting where a document is signed notifying the world that Yoruba leaders have asked freedom fighters to defend all parts of Yorubaland.

This, he said, would protect agitators from whatsoever label the government of the day might likely give them.

He said, “My name is Sunday Adeyemo, popularly known as Sunday Igboho. In our place, one is usually referred to by the name of his town or city. I am one of the warriors that partook in the war between Modakeke and Ife. Some of the people who know of my antecedent and what I did during the war, when they hear my name, they know I am a real warrior.

“During the struggles of (Rasheed) Ladoja and (Lamidi) Adedibu in Ibadan, those who wanted to impeach Ladoja, those who wanted to remove him from his position and all, those who knew what I did to ensure Ladoja didn't get cheated, when some of them see me, they refer to me as a brave and courageous man because, despite the multitude of enemies, God fought for me.

“My opinion on Fulani killings is that Yoruba people must be united and speak with one voice. If our leaders truly want us to fight killer herdsmen, then our kings, elders must be at the fore, call us to a meeting and give us the mandate to protect Yorubaland.

“They must also invite journalists to cover the event so that the whole world will know that they gave us the mandate to protect the Yoruba people. May God be with us, what is the extent of the power of the Fulani people, they are very insignificant, I swear to God.

“But if we say we should put into use, the charms we inherited from our fathers, the Nigerian government will definitely tag us with another name.

“If the Yoruba elders and leaders know that Yoruba people are truly suffering, they should invite each and every one of us to a meeting together with the Obas, other traditional rulers. When they sit together, then they invite us... God is the most powerful, I am but a man, some people are more powerful than us, they should invite those ones too. Then after that, if they feel we can also make an impact, they should invite us. We will all sit together and see how we will find a solution.

“Some people only hear of my name, they haven't seen me physically before, some people will say I can command a gun, I have only done this in the presence of a few people. For some people, they exaggerate what I have done while some will say I am just bragging.

“Well, for me to come now and say 'I am Sunday Igboho, I want to fight for Yoruba people', I'm sure within three days, Buhari will give a directive from Abuja, and soldiers will flood my house with weapons,  even more than their fight against insurgents in the North.

“The government has turned a blind eye to the insurgency in the North and the chaos caused by Boko Haram terrorists but by the time we try to fight for Yoruba people here, you'd see what the government will do, they will try to name it something else.

“All the onslaught of Boko Haram and those other terrorists in the North without a repercussion; by the time we try to protect our own people, the government will tag it as something else because some Yoruba people will go to the government and say 'we know these boys, they are murderers, they are hired killers!' Please, who have we killed, whose mother have we killed?

“Our struggle is simply to protect Yoruba people, that is why it requires wisdom, it is not something that someone will put on a uniform with charms and the rest and say we want to confront Fulani people.

“One has to sit, consult with Yoruba leaders, then they sign a document giving us the go-ahead that we have their support to protect Yoruba people all over Yorubaland.

”There are young men who are willing to protect their land, they will never flee, but it requires wisdom. We can't just mobilise young men to go and start protecting our people from being kidnapped, it requires wisdom.

“If they (Yoruba leaders) are sure that they are our fathers in Yorubaland and that they are not bad fathers or betrayers, they should be at the fore of this discussion and see if we will go or not but they have refused to do so because of what they collect from politicians. I won't say more than that.”

Igboho is currently detained in Benin Republic after security operatives arrested him on Monday following an alert the Nigerian government issued to its West African counterparts.

Before then, on July 1, operatives of the Department of State Services (DSS) stormed Igboho's house in Ibadan, Oyo State, killing two of his associates and arresting 12 others.

Igboho was able to escape but the government declared him wanted.

Ibrahim Salami, one of Igboho's lawyers, disclosed that the agitator was being accused of stockpiling weapons.

The lawyer also said the Nigerian government accused the freedom fighter of calling for secession and disturbing the country.

Salami said, “The Nigerian government said Igboho was involved in arms trafficking into Nigeria.

“The second one is that he is causing disturbances in Nigeria and the third one is that he is trying to divide Nigeria into two or three.”

In recent years, Nigerians have been victims of various Ponzi schemes, losing billions of naira to such schemes.

One of the latest ones involves MBA Capital and Trading Limited, a forex training and capital investment company.

SaharaReporters had in February exposed how the company obtained money from Nigerians using the guise of investment and disappeared.

Some of the victims claimed they were defrauded of billions of naira, adding that the company closed on December 22, 2020, for the festive season but it has failed to resume since then.

An investor, Favour Senibo, had told SaharaReporters that she invested her money with MBA after seeing a publication stating that the company was established with a vision to impact the general populace with the knowledge of trading forex and creating platforms that will bring about sustainable financial freedom.

She also said the CEO, Maxwell Odum, claimed the company had been certified by necessary regulatory agencies in Nigeria and that the company, unlike others, was not a Ponzi scheme.

Odum had promised a 15 percent return on capital investment (ROI) for investors with a capital Investment of N360, 000 to N5 million.

According to her, a few months later, it was announced that MBA had been acquired by a certain company, World Citizen Equity Partners (WCEP), which would inject more investment to grow the business.

Another investor, Alalibo Amachree, said MBA had changed its name to Men In Business Thrive And Credit Cooperative Limited (MIBAC). He said he heard about the investment company from an online advert, and invested N3.5 million.

Amachree said he had no job at the moment and was already suicidal because of the challenges confronting him.

Also, David Spencer, another investor, said he was introduced to MBA by a staff member who claimed that the investment scheme was government-approved.

He said he regretted his decision and was shocked by the developments.

Though MBA was registered with the Corporate Affairs Commission and the Special Control Unit Against Money Laundering by one Maxwell Odum as the CEO, SaharaReporters gathered that the company is owned by one Kevin Ndago, an ‘international fraudster’ who entered Nigeria as a Cameroonian along with his girlfriend, Bitaniya Zaeb, an Ethiopian.

They were said to have used Odun to defraud Nigerians of over N181 billion.

“Kevin Ndago who bears Kevin Kiliminati, his true identity was revealed recently in his Venuatu passport procured to hide his true identity as an international fraudster and ex-convict in Cameroon. He lured desperate Nigerians seeking second citizenship to be able to live abroad with promises of investment opportunities across the globe, investment partnership with billionaires across the borders of Nigeria,” a senior officer at Wuse Zone 3 police station told SaharaReporters.

We got to know all this information during an investigation where a Nigerian activist and legal practitioner was swindled of about $140,000 by the company to get French passports for his children living in the United Kingdom.

“Kevin's main accomplice and girlfriend, Bitaniya Zaeb poses as a staff member of an international company called World Citizens Equity and Partners and deployed to Nigeria to oversee the affairs of the office. Their modus operandi engages citizens of other African nations and Nigerians who spy on Nigerians with big fat bank accounts after which Kevin and Bitaniya arrange to visit them. During the visit, the duo will convince the clients to part with their money.

“It was during the course of such racketeering that Kevin Ndago and Bitaniya Zaeb met with Maxwell Odum and decided to incorporate their scheme into MBA Capitals and quickly purchased over 90% shares of MBA Capitals using their former company, WCEP.

“While Kevin Ndago and Maxwell Odum are still at large, Bitaniya Zaeb is still in Nigeria hobnobbing with Nigerian politicians to steal billions of naira being coordinated by a newly incorporated firm, called True-North Citizens Ltd. The True North Citizens Ltd is now being used as a front by Kevin Ndago who called the shot from the UK with his Nigerian accomplices and highly placed persons in the Ethiopian Embassy in Nigeria.

“Both individuals are currently fighting tooth and nail using the office of the Federal Capital Territory Commissioner of Police and some members of the National Assembly to thwart ongoing police investigations into their activities that were reported to our office and other police stations across the country.”

Meanwhile, some investors have petitioned Interpol and the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) about the activities of the company and its owners.

Another police source told SaharaReporters many Nigerian politicians with corruption cases have procured second citizenship through the help of Bitaniya and Kevin.

“Many of their victims have since died whilst others are still believing in us (police) and EFCC to track Maxwell and Kevin in order to recover their funds.

“Whilst poor citizens are languishing in poverty and pains, Bitaniya and Kevin are living in affluence after using the proceeds of the crime to purchase properties in the UK, USA, Ethiopia and Dubai, so sad,” he said.

Soldiers of the 154 task battalion, Ngamdu have arrested a man identified as Ebenezer Odeh who was in possession of illegal ammunition, along Maiduguri-Damaturu highway on Sunday.

A military source stated that the suspect, upon arrest, claimed to be a police officer and member of the police Special Weapons Tactical Team (SWAT) in Rivers State, The Cable reports.

DY Chiwar, the commander of the battalion, was said to have ordered Odeh’s arrest, after noticing suspicious movement.

“The suspect with NPF No: 456647, boarded a Borno Express bus to Nigeria’s capital, Abuja when they arrived at the checking point,” the military source said.

“While the vehicle was waiting for its turn to be passed at the checking point, the suspect dropped from the bus and claimed he wanted to ease himself (urinate).

“This elicited suspicion from the commander who directed troops to search the suspect’s bag.

“On searching the bag, about 220 quantity rounds of 7.62mm special, 1× hand grenade, a dagger and other items were discovered.

“When interrogated by the troops, the suspect was said to have claimed to be a member of the police Special Weapons Tactical Team (SWAT) from the mobile police force, 19 unit, Rivers state.”

Another military source said the suspect might be a fake policeman.

“He is not supposed to carry any arms. He is a suspect. No police is allowed to travel with a single bullet. And when he was stopped, he tried to run away before they intercepted him,” the source said.

The suspect and items recovered have been handed over to the headquarters sector 2, Operation Hadin Kai for further investigation.

The Peoples Democratic Party has stated that Governor Yahaya Bello of Kogi State deserves no commendation as he sits over the most backward state in the country.

The PDP noted that Kogi is backward due to the “much devastation, infrastructural decay, poverty and institutionalised hopelessness” under which the people live.

Yahaya Bello
The PDP National Publicity Secretary, Kola Ologbondiyan, stated this during a tour of the PDP offices in the state at the weekend.

He lamented that Bello had “stagnated and turned Kogi into the most backward state in the country.”

The PDP spokesperson dismissed as “hopeless lie” the false news being circulated by the Kogi government that he commended the governor over a road project.

In a statement signed by Richard Ihediwa, Assistant Director, Publicity Unit, Office of the PDP National Publicity Secretary, the party said, “It is indeed pathetic that Yahaya Bello has resorted to fake news in his desperate forum shopping for unmerited approval. The resort to fake news has further exposed his childishness and pathetic desperation to use patriotic Nigerians in his search for undeserved endorsement.

“I have but pity for Yahaya Bello and I advise him to desist from such childishness and irresponsible actions. There is nothing to commend him about. Nothing! He has brought only pain, hardship and stagnation to Kogi State.”

The publicity scribe further counselled the governor to “repent and utilise the resources of the people of the state for their benefit including infrastructural recovery as well as paying workers and pensioners whose salaries and entitlements have been wickedly withheld for years.”

The Minister of Interior, Rauf Aregbesola, has urged state governors to sign the death warrants of the 3,008 condemned criminals in the country waiting for execution.

He advised the governors to sign the warrants, especially those whose appeals had been exhausted and were not mounting challenges to their convictions, as part of measures to de-congest prisons nationwide.
Rauf Aregbesola

Aregbesola, who spoke at the inaugurating of the Osun State Command headquarters complex of the Nigeria Correctional Service in Osogbo on Friday, stressed the need to bring to closure the cases involving the inmates.

The minister enumerated three avenues to de-congest prisons, saying governors could accelerate the wheel of justice, as many inmates had been in custody for a period longer than the maximum sentence their alleged offences carry.

The minister described this as miscarriage of justice.

Aregbesola also urged states to share in the burden of de-congesting custodial facilities by constructing holding centres.

He said that all the states needed to do was to build the facilities to specification and set aside a sum for the maintenance of inmates, while the NCS provided the personnel to man and run the facilities.

He said, “The third way is for state governors to summon the will to do the needful on death row convicts. There are presently 3,008 condemned criminals waiting for their date with the executioners in our meagre custodial facilities. This consists of 2,952 males and 56 females.

“In cases where appeal has been exhausted and the convicts are not mounting any challenge to their conviction, the state should go ahead, one, to do the needful and bring closure to their cases; two, set some others free on compassionate grounds, especially those who have grown old on account of the long time they have been in custody, those who are terminally ill and those who have been reformed and demonstrated exceptionally good behaviour; and three, commute others’ sentences to life or a specific term in jail.”
