Teacher

The Ondo State Universal Basic Education Board has declared that the state has a shortfall of 8,000 teachers in public schools in the state.

Chairperson of SUBEB in the state, Oladunni Odu, made the disclosure on Monday during a programme in Akure, the state capital.

Odu said that the state would need to employ additional teachers in order to meet up with the required educational standard in terms of teaching.

She attributed the shortage of teachers in public schools across the state as a result of retirement, death and transfer of competent hands to other ministries.  See Also Exclusive Pupils In School Attended By Ondo Deputy Governor Sit On Bare Floor, Learn In Classrooms With Leaky Roof Despite N13bn Education Expenditure

According to her, the last time the state government recruited teachers into public schools was 12 years ago.

She said, “The government of Akeredolu is working assiduously to make sure that teachers are recruited into public schools.

"The last time recruitment was done was during the tenure of late Olusegun Agagu. At the moment, we have a deficit of 8000 teachers in our schools.

"In order to salvage the situation before embarking on massive recruitment, we are presently drawing officers who have education background in the civil service and local government service to the primary schools.”

The Human and Environmental Development Agenda has sent a petition to the Nigerian Government to sack the Acting Director of Federal Research Institute, Oshodi, Lagos, Chima Igwe, over alleged certificate forgery.

The group also gave the board of the institute 14 days to immediately remove Igwe as head of the research institute or face legal action.

Staff of FIIRO had earlier on Monday picketed the office of the institute to ask Igwe to make a public presentation of his doctorate certificate or step down from the position.

In the petition sent to the Chairman, Governing Board of the institute, Alhaji Ibrahim Gwarzo, by HEDA Resource Centre, the anti-corruption organisation said the board needed to take decisive action by sacking Igwe.

A copy of the protest letter signed by HEDA Chairman, Mr Olanrewaju Suraju, was also sent to President Muhammadu Buhari.

HEDA cited reports that indicated that the only evidence of the purported doctorate for 18 years is an attestation letter and that the issue became contentious when the tenure of the immediate past Director-General of FIIRO, Prof Gloria Elemo, ended and there was the need for a new head of the institute.

HEDA said it was aware that the governing board of the institute while shopping for a replacement called for files of senior officers of the agency and Igwe being the most senior was to be next in line.

Suraju said, “We follow up the investigations by the Independent Corrupt Practices and other related offences Commission, which has been investigating the matter but surprised to discover that the ICPC appear to have abandoned the investigation.

“The allegations levelled against the Acting Director-General, Mr Igwe, is such that is within the definition of serious misconduct as defined in the Federal Government Civil Service Rules in Rule 030401.”

HEDA demanded the immediate action of the board to act in accordance with government’s directive within two weeks or the group will seek legal action against the board and the institute.

A 27-year-old man named Olaleye Ifayemi has been arraigned in a Magistrate Court sitting in Akure, Ondo State, for allegedly impersonating a serving senator from Ondo State.

Ifayemi also known as 'General', was arrested by the police for presenting himself as an aide to Ayo Akinyelure, lawmaker representing Ondo Central Senatorial district at the National Assembly.

The accused is said to have used a particular phone number to defraud members of the public including a prominent citizen.

He was charged for four counts bordering on fraud, impersonation, attempt to commit felony and unlawful demand.

According to the prosecutor, the defendant committed the offence on January 6, 2020 at about 10:00am at Irowo Quarters, Akure.

The alleged offence was contrary to and punishable under sections 484, 509 and 125A, (1) (b) of the Criminal Code Cap 37, Volume 1, Laws of Ondo State of Nigeria, 2006.

Taiwo Oniyere, prosecutor of the case, said there were two witnesses ready to testify before the court in the matter.

He asked the court to remand the accused in prison custody pending the continuation of trial.

Counsel to the defendant, Darlington Obidinma, however, opposed the remand application sought by the prosecutor.

In her ruling, Magistrate Jolade Adepoju granted the defendant bail in the sum of N250, 000, with two sureties, who must be resident within the court’s jurisdiction and must produce evidence of tax clearance.

The case was adjourned until March 11, 2020 for continuation.

The Coalition of Civil Societies in Nigeria has supported moves by Emeka Ihedioha to seek a review of the judgment of the Supreme Court that sacked him as governor of Imo State.

The coalition held that the Supreme Court erred in its ruling by pronouncing Hope Uzodinma as winner of the governorship election in the state.

The coalition also said that the judges gave two different verdicts of the case, adding that it was unprecedented for the Supreme Court to manipulate or doctor its own judgment to cover its track.

It also added that in making its ruling, the Supreme Court overthrew all known legal and electoral jurisprudence and settled principles as applied in other election cases.

The group said, “On January 14, 2020, the Supreme Court gave judgment in the Imo State governorship appeal

“The respondents were shocked when they approached the court for a copy of the judgment delivered in open court which lasted less than 10 minutes on that day and contained in about six pages, only to be given a judgment of 46 pages on January 22, totally different from the one read on January 14. It was a full and final judgment on that day.”

The coalition further stated that Uzodinma failed to provide any evidence aside from the fake result sheet not recognised by the Independent National Electoral Commission.

It added that the court should have aligned itself with the tribunal and appellate court by disregarding the results from the 388 polling units due to the high rate of electoral malpractices and violence.

It also held that as citizens, the judgment read by the Supreme Court lacked common sense and did not seem to meet the ends of justice as it questioned how the apex court admitted a result that is more than the total accredited voters without verification.

The coalition stated that some data in the document accepted by the court showed gross evidence of over-voting.

“A perusal of the table submitted by Hope Uzodinma to the tribunal on the 388 polling units in question shows how ridiculous the Supreme Court decision is.

“For instance, number 69 on the table where registered voters were 492; APC scored 819 votes; PDP 7. That is 334 voters more than registered voters, not to talk of accredited voters, which is much lower, though not stated in the table number 377 on the table, where registered voters were 367; APC scored 367; PDP 4. That is four voters more than registered voters, not to talk of accredited voters, which is significantly lower, though not stated in the table.

“Number 285 on the table, where registered voters were 449; APC scored 780; PDP 4. That is 335 voters more than registered voters, not to talk of accredited voters which are significantly lower, though not stated and that the document tendered by Senator Hope Uzodinma’s table of results from 388 polling units, did not have any scores for any other political party such as APGA, AA, Accord etc. where there were 70 political parties that contested the election.

“However, the Supreme Court added 213,695 votes to Hope Uzodinma of APC from the fake 388 units and 1,903 votes to PDP, thereby making the total votes scored at the election to be 953,083.  This is far above the accredited voters clearly shown in the FORM EC8D before the tribunal as 823,743. Whopping 129,340 votes cannot be accounted for by the Supreme Court decision.

“We, therefore, call on Hon. Emeka Ihedioha to approach the Supreme Court to correct the patent errors in their judgment to ensure that justice is not only done but manifestly seen to be done.

"We also urge the Supreme Court to take courage and recall the Imo State governorship matter and correct the error and restore justice, peace, hope and faith in our democracy and regain the confidence of the Nigerian people.”
