Vice President of Nigeria, Prof Yemi Osinbajo, has described as unacceptable ongoing attacks on Nigerians in South Africa.

In a statement through his spokesperson, Laolu Akande, Osinbajo comdemned the development, adding that it does not represent the ideals of iconic leaders like Nelson Mandela.

He said, “It is very sad and very unfortunate that the lives and livelihoods of Nigerians living in South Africa are once again being destroyed with such wantonness and with such carelessness and recklessness.

“It is unfortunate because Nigeria and Nigerians invested a great deal in the pulling down of apartheid.

“Besides, these acts of bigotry are entirely contrary to the very ideals that all the great South African leaders, including the present president fought for, and for which many gave their lives.

“President Muhammadu Buhari has already spoken about this; and obviously we are very concerned and certainly intend to take this up with the authorities in South Africa in order to ensure that this sort of thing does not repeat itself."

Nigeria and Indonesia have in recent years lost their top five liquefied natural gas exporting status, according to a Reuters survey.

The data of LNG bearing tanks, reviewed that the United States has reduced the market share of these two countries and now holds 10 per cent of the gas market.

The report found that in the last two months, the order of the largest exporters has been Australia, Qatar, US, Canada and Malaysia.

Nigeria and Indonesia had previously vied between themselves to occupy one of the five slots.

According to the survey, the large volume of gas been pumped-out by the US is causing the price of the commodity to trend downward.

The report also said that 46 million tons per annum gas exporting plants in the US are already in operation or ramping up.

On the other hand, the Nigerian Liquefied Natural Gas Ltd produces 22 mtpa of gas annually.

It is still sourcing funds to expand its production to 30 mtpa.

Nigeria is still harbouring plans of constructing an ambitious gas pipeline that terminates at Morocco, in order to keep European markets in sight.

The police in South Africa has arrested more than 80 people and confirmed five deaths as attacks on Nigerians and other African migrants in Johannesburg and the capital Pretoria intensified on Tuesday.

Major streets across both cities were littered with broken bricks and glass from buildings torched in overnight fires and debris from police battles with local groups, Reuters said in a report.

The latest wave of unrest in South Africa has raised fears of a recurrence of violence aimed at foreigners in 2015 in which at least seven people were killed.

Before that, some 60 people were killed in a wave of unrest around the country in 2008.

Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari said on Tuesday he was urgently sending a special envoy to meet with President Cyril Ramaphosa to secure the “safety of Nigerian citizens’ lives and property”.

Police have yet to pinpoint what triggered the violence, which began on Sunday when protesters armed with makeshift weapons roamed the streets of Pretoria’s business district pelting shops with rocks and petrol bombs and running off with goods.

High unemployment and widespread poverty have been cited as possible triggers for the recent disturbances and attacks on immigrants.

One person has been reportedly killed by the police in Lagos as protesters stormed the Shoprite outlet on Lekki-Epe Expressway on Tuesday in response to xenophobic attacks on Nigerians in South Africa.

It was also gathered that a van belonging to the Nigeria Police Force was burnt by the angry mob following the killing of the protester by the police.

A video making the rounds on popular social networking platform Twitter and confirmed by some residents, showed a body on the floor as gunshots rent the air while another footage showed a police van burning.

Another video currently trending revealed a man wielding a cutlass with his face covered with handkerchief.

Nollywood actress, Belinda Effah, in a post on Twitter disclosed that hoodlums had hijacked the protest and that the place had become very tensed.

She said, “Jakande area is very unsafe right now; area boys everywhere. Everyone ran and left their cars.

“As I was about to run out, the boys carrying machetes and stones told me it’s not me they are after, they are looking for South Africans to kill.

“These same boys vandalised some cars. I saw one of them stone a car and broke the windshield.

“After a while, they came to our car and asked for some money. They have blocked the Jakande Road and passengers are so afraid.”

Spokesperson for the police in Lagos, Bala Elkana, refused to give specific details on the crisis when contacted.

The Take It Back Movement has condemned the attack on Nigerians and other African migrants in South Africa.

The group called for a partnership between Nigeria and South African authorities to end the killings.

Blaming the South African Government and security agencies for not doing enough to curb the killing of Nigerians and destruction of their investments, also said that the Nigerian Government must be held accountable for the situation.

The movement, in a statement by its Director of Media and Communications, Rachel Onamusi-Kpiasi, said the situation was totally unacceptable.

The statement reads, “The Take It Back Movement has watched with growing concern as the lives, livelihoods, and property of Nigerians in South Africa have, once again, become targets of violent, xenophobic attacks.

“The South African Government and security agents have stood in silent complicity with these atrocities, and in some cases, facilitated it.

“The Nigerian Government must take a lot of the blame, as, if Nigeria had been restored to its place of pride as the giant of Africa, less Nigerians would feel the need to seek sustenance elsewhere.”

Xenophobic attacks in South Africa

The Centre for Human Rights Civic Education has urged the Nigerian Government to go beyond mere talking and act in response to xenophobic attacks on Nigerians and other African migrants in South Africa.

The group, while condemning the development, urged the government to immediately pass a strong message of its irritation at the situation by expelling the South African envoy in Abuja as a first symbolic step.

Executive Director of CHRICED, Dr Ibrahim Zikirullahi, while calling on the Nigerian Government to immediately review diplomatic relations with South Africa, said that the era of African brotherhood with the former apartheid nation was over.

He said, “Nigeria must invoke the principle of reciprocity by mobilising its soft power assets to put pressure on South African economic interests in Nigeria, in the first instance.

“It is totally unacceptable that South Africans are killing Nigerians and attacking their businesses while South African businesses thrive in other parts of the continent.

“If Nigeria could selflessly launch and sustain decades-long campaign to help free South Africa from the dehumanising clutches of apartheid, it must be prepared to go all the way to protect the lives and dignity of its citizens from irredeemable xenophobes.”
