The Lagos State Government has discharged five persons earlier infected with Coronavirus after days in quarantine and isolation.

This brings to 29 the total number of persons discharged in the state after successfully battling the virus.

Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu announced this via his personal Twitter handle on Sunday, adding that tests conducted on the five persons came out negative.

He said that those discharged had fully recovered and have been reunited with their families.

He said, “Today, I am happy to inform you that five more patients comprising two males and three females including a 10-year-old girl have tested negative twice to #COVID19.

“These five patients have been discharged to reunite with their families.

“This brings to total 29 the number of patients who have fully recovered and have been discharged from our facility at Yaba.”

Governor Sanwo-Olu urged Lagosians not to stigmatise those previously infected with the virus but continue to abide by professional health advice to curb further spread of the virus.

While the country is battling the Coronavirus pandemic, Constable Gbadebo Adekunle Jacob, a policeman attached to Tolu Police Division, Ajegunle, Area B Command of Lagos State, has assaulted his fiancee, leaving her in a pool of blood.

The policeman, it was gathered, constantly engages in the inhuman act of brutalising the lady while boasting of being above the law.

The victim, who narrated her ordeal in the relationship, said she had been enduring the assault for a long time.

She said the latest assault she suffered was on Saturday when Jacob hit her and she was bleeding from the head.  Victim

She said, "On April 4, 2020, I was seriously assaulted by my fiance whose name is Jacob, a policeman serving at Tolu Division, Ajegunle under Area B Command, Lagos State.

"Physical abuse and assault had become a regular thing in the relationship and I just had to cry out because it has got to the height of it."

She disclosed that the policeman had on several occasions brutalised her with no sign of an end to the assault.

She also said the man always claimed to have people in high places, who would protect him and that he would go scot-free over any harm he does to her.
Gbadebo Adekunle Jacob
She said, "Unnecessary beatings under confidence that nothing can happen or he can't be arrested because he is a policeman.

"He will always say nobody can do anything to him, he inflicted marks all over my body."

Recall that some advocacy organisations had called on the Nigerian Government to ensure the protection of women and girls against gender-based violence during the lockdown period due to the outbreak of Coronavirus.

The groups feared that while the ‘stay-at-home’ order serves to protect families from the disease, it has the tendency of worsening sexual and gender-based violence against women and girls in Nigeria.

Sir,  THE MONEY YOU ANNOUNCED ON #CORONAVIRUS IS TO MAKE ONE MAN BILLIONAIRE AGAIN BECAUSE THE MONEY WILL NOT GET TO THOSE WHO TRULY NEED IT MORE.

OUR NEGLIGENCE  IS A DEVASTATING  TIME  BOMB

Your Excellency, I am making this passionate appeal to you as a world Habitat Ambassador, asking that you take a stance so as to protect us against several damage, loss of lives from the corona virus. Some of this issues are on my previous letter to you and governors Logic and Reason without guns dated 14 October 2013.

Sir,
First of all, let me start  by reminding you that great men and countries learn from history, hence they avoid the calamities and errors made by fallen  heroes, whose failures destroyed them, even in the midst of perfection.
What human or medical equipments do we have in Nigeria  that can be compared with America, Spain ,Italy or even the whole of Europe, which  has been ravaged by the corona virus? Are we prepared at this time? Whereby looking from outside  we still have not made essential preparations by learning from what these nations are currently facing.

A few weeks ago, it was only one case, but today we  have gone from 1 to 210  infected persons, who may have had contact with 5 people before detection, which could total to 1150 and above in two weeks time, if we are not careful in managing the spread of the virus.

Yesterday, the world thought it was a Chinese problem, forgetting that the world now is a global village.

Today total cases of coronavirus  globally is now 1,140,327 and  deaths globally 61,684  as  of 4 April 2020.

Please Mr President, you  should kindly relief emergency fund to all state governor's across the state and you should please direct all    governors and minister of health to work out a process to use some of the closed schools as isolation centres, while the stadiums should be prepared for any eventualities. I also  appeal to government to find a way to send funds to aid the quest of survival because 98% of Nigerians earn their livelihood from the Street; meaning the ‘sit at home’ method, is likely to be suicidal! Why? There is no light, no running water, no job  and there  is no alternative provided for food, money and other basic needs of the masses in Nigeria, who are more than 95 % of our population.

Sir, please  provide comprehensive details of how to assist Nigerians with some sort of financial assistance as they stay at home because some of the money you announced is to make one man billionaire again because the money will not get to those who truly need it more, Let's  look inward and  provide solutions to save the many innocent lives that might be lost in the out break of a catastrophic epidemic.

There are concerns of the masks at this time should be important,  we should start getting  volunteers of fashion designer talior to make masks in their homes,by sewing them, while government provide the materials and logistics needed in case if the out break escalate, An emergency training process to expand our medical teams, should be in process now. No one is coming to our aid,if we fall into the  crisis, because the whole world has it's own fair share of trouble with only Five laboratory screening centers recorded in the media, across 36 state  this is  not encouraging at all. An emergency training process to expand our medical teams, should be in process by  now across the state . No one is coming to our aid; if we should fall into crisis because the whole world has it's own fair share of trouble. The bulk of the blame will be on you, if we fail to address this issue now, as it will be assumed we had all the time to prepare but we did nothing. We are privileged that the virus did not start from Africa and the effects in China Italy ,Spain and  America should have  give us a first hand experience on the possible out come. This is not  a time to play politics, but every one of us should join hands to stop the spread.

The  financial donations  made by individuals and cooperate organization should be used to expand our medical equipments and build isolation centre. We also need to  create  emergency units in our local communities. The time to act is now.
As we go on with the fight against the corona Virus, we should try and support our farmers to also continue with their farming and also do everything possible to stop Fulani herdmen  otherwise we might be out of food within a short time. We shall go through this  period hopeful if we do the needful now ,before it's too late.
Long live the Federal  Republic of Nigeria.

Thanks Amb Francis Agoda

The Chadian Army has killed more Boko Haram terrorists in its ongoing offensive, Operation Wrath Of Bohoma, led by the country's President, Idriss Deby.

Chad, with the help of the Israeli Army, has mapped out the entire Lake Chad region containing both natural and artificial islands for the operation already yielding results.

The battle at Kelkoua, bank of the Lake Chad, saw the killing of many Boko Haram terrorists while bunkers hiding key commanders where discovered and destroyed.

Meanwhile, Abubakar Shekau, leader of the terrorist organization, has pleaded with his fighters not to run away from battle after many of them were killed and weapons confiscated by the Chadian Army.

In a sober voice, Shekau, who spoke in Hausa language, said, "People of Chad, leave us alone, this operation is not approved by the Qur'an. It is not the will of the Prophet Muhammed but if you want to continue, God will help us too because he is bigger than you.
"To my fighters, take heart. It is I, Abubakar Shekau, your leader."

The novel coronavirus disease (Covid-19) pandemic is a global disruption with unprecedented geopolitical, health, economic and security implications. Although, the primary areas of concern are matters of health and public safety, the secondary implications this is generating in the areas of human rights has become an issue of greater concern in Nigeria since the declaration of lockdown and its attendant enforcement by security and law enforcement agents from 11 pm on Monday, 30th of March 2020.  While the social, political and economic constraints of Covid-19 pandemic are still emerging in Nigeria, extant report argues that the impact of the corona virus crisis on crime, law enforcement and order will be profound but likely short term.

The consequences of extremely high demand on the health service alongside drastic government induced measures such as lockdown in Nigeria are expected to shake up all social norms, resulting in a significant shock to the economy and high levels of disruption combined with pressure on families and local communities. This is increasing the demands on the already overstretched security apparatus of government (the military), the Nigeria Police Force, other law enforcement agencies and emergency services. Suffice to state that the policing strategy deployed towards the enforcement of stay at home order by President Muhammadu Buhari and some state governments involved interagency collaboration by security and law enforcement agencies, the Nigeria Police Force maintains the primary responsibility in terms of coordination. Hence, the need to prevail on the Nigeria Police Force and other security apparatus of the state to foster rights based approach to pandemic policing occasioned by Covid-19 in Nigeria.

This becomes pivotal as numerous videos emerged online allegedly depicting police and soldiers kicking, slapping, whipping and subjecting lockdown violators to diverse abuses and forcing people into humiliating positions. Notably, four days into the lockdown, the security agents had reportedly killed one person in Warri, Delta state even though total death recorded as a result of COVID-19 in the entire country is two presently. This poses a challenging question; would Nigerians experience more death in the hand of security and law enforcement agents enforcing lockdown directive than the Covid-19 fatality itself?

In a period when national unity in Nigeria and trust in the state agents are vital, such actions could prove disastrous. The lockdown in Nigeria has witnessed large deployment of soldiers and police personnel mounting roadblocks and patrolling streets across the major cities. Their task is to enforce the emergency proclamation of President Muhammadu Buhari with a view to aid the health workers in containing the Covid-19 pandemic in Nigeria. These stipulate that only those with the authority to leave their homes, for example people providing essential services can do so. Everyone else must abide by government’s instruction to stay at home. As cited above, there are security and law enforcement personnel who are flagrantly abusing their authority while enforcing the lockdown. Although they are empowered to use minimal and appropriate force to make an arrest, intervene in a criminal incident or protect themselves and others from harm. The complaints emanating from Nigerians across the social and mainstream media platforms have shown that the type of force applied by most security and law enforcement officers is fast translating to torture and wanton human rights abuses. Rather, it appears extreme, punitive and random.

Drawing from the above cited developments, the citizens, security and law enforcement agencies, and the civil society organizations must act rightly and promptly to stem the tide of human rights abuses which have dominated the landscape as we combat Covid-19 pandemic in Nigeria. The starting point is the mobilization of a critical mass of digitally engaged citizens to work with the civil society actors and security agencies to report with verifiable evidences– incidents of human rights abuses being perpetrated by the security and law enforcement agents on Covid-19 patrol duty. To this end, citizens are enjoined to take advantage of the COVID-19 Public Safety Support Virtual Centre (COVID-PSSC) launched by the CLEEN Foundation to provide real-time public safety and security information to oversight agencies and the general public.

Essentially, the electronic platform using crowd sourcing technology is deployed for reporting compliance by citizens to government’s stay at home directives and document rights violations by security and law enforcement personnel. In addition, state representatives and volunteers of Covid-19 Nigeria Security Support Group (CNSSG) will report conditions and needs of vulnerable groups and communities in the society to aid health and security officials and other critical stakeholders in responding effectively to the management of Covid-19 pandemic and related issues in Nigeria. Although, the Covid-19 pandemic incidents have only been reported in 12 states and the FCT, the CLEEN Foundation is deploying observers in the entire 36 states and the FCT to monitor the conduct of the security agents in terms of their compliance with rights based approach in the enforcement of the lockdown. The idea on national coverage stems from the persuasion that virtually all the state governments have issued various emergency orders aimed at enforcing citizens’ compliance to Covid-19 associated directives in the states. At the centre of enforcement is the Nigeria Police Force.

Another very important right issue associated with pandemic policing is the protection of the fundamental human rights (in this case- the right to life) of the security and law enforcement personnel deployed on patrol duty for the Covid-19 pandemic. During a pandemic situation like the Covid-19, police must be prepared with the proper equipments that transcend guns and badges. Officers are expected to wear and bear preparedness kits such as personal protective equipment (face mask, hand sanitizer, gloves, coveralls and eye protection) as occasion demands and provided by the Nigeria Police Force and other relevant security agencies participating in the Covid-19 patrol exercise. Deploying officers on such a delicate duty without proper provision of the necessary kits would be tantamount to infringing on their right to life and it could be suicidal!

In conclusion, this piece is a reserved dialogue aimed at providing a modest framework for reconceptualizing the role of police in pandemic situation. The Nigeria Police Force as a core member of the first responder system must continue to break down cultural barriers that diminish their capacities to effectively serve communities in the wake of this pandemic. With the report of human right abuses emerging online and offline due to the activities of security and law enforcement agents on Covid-19 duty, there is little doubt that in many instances the pandemic situation will not be compounded due to insufficient preparations and lack of right based responses from the law enforcement agents. This is a clarion call to the citizens, the civil society organizations, and the security and law enforcement agents to act right.

I know that the dominant health topic now is Coronavirus (or, if you like, Chinese Virus), but I feel compelled to draw attention to some egregious practices by some callous and cruel Nigerians that are ruining many lives daily in this country. These vile characters are able to unleash this grievous harm on innocent Nigerians because the various regulatory agencies like, the National Agency for Food, Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) or the Standard Organisation of Nigeria (SON, are either in very deep slumber or very sick and nigh unto death, or even dead and awaiting burial!

I think that if some far-reaching interventions are not urgently undertaken, we would not be able to rule out the possibility that the rest of the world might wake up one day and discover that this large, unproductive territory called Nigeria has become one wide stretch of empty space, devoid of humans or littered with decaying corpses? Is it that human life has since totally lost its value before Nigerians or what? How far should rational human beings tread on the path of mutual annihilation before they realise that it is, perhaps, time to do a rethink, beat a retreat and commence the homeward journey to self-reclamation?

Let me explain. Just recently a young Nigerian medical doctor put out a message on the social media warning Nigerians about these beverages mostly prepared at home by diverse vendors and supplied to offices, business places and at events to Nigerians who eagerly purchase them these days because of the growing emphasis on “natural drinks” as  healthy alternatives to “machine processed” beverages which have been established to contain very harmful (especially, carcinogenic) chemicals used as either preservatives or sweeteners. Some of the sodas (or what Nigerians call “minerals”) people drink with relish here are just concoctions of carbonated water, flavours, colourings and lots of sugar or sweeteners.

A growing number of Nigerians are becoming aware that sugar, amino acids and fats in the body constitute rich food for cancer cells and that their growth might be halted if they could no longer find any of these to feed on. But more specifically, too much sugar (especially, the processed variety) hastens one’s embrace with diabetes and the disastrous consequences that go with it. This awareness also appears to be reducing the seductive capacity of the usually attractively packaged concoctions called “fruit juice” sold in our supermarkets.

And so, the “natural drinks”, like “Zobo,” “Kunu,” or diverse mixtures of juices extracted from either tigre nuts, dates or different kinds of fruits have grown to become the favourites of many Nigerians. And because of their growing popularity, many restaurants now either produce them or engage the producers to ensure they get sufficient supplies of these “natural drinks” in order to meet the growing demand by their customers for them.

The young doctor’s worry is not even the mostly unregulated nature of their productions which (judging by merely looking at many of the people that produce and market them) are most likely prepared in very unhygienic environments with largely contaminated water. His main concern is with the plastic bottles in which these drinks are stored and sold.

These people go to all manner of places to gather these bottles which people had discarded after drinking the water they once contained. Many of the bottles are even from hospitals and were mostly used by patients. Many of these patients are battling terrible infectious diseases like Tuberculosis and others, and after drinking the water, several of them keep the bottles for a while and spit into them each time they are pressured by the disease to do so. There are also patients who are too weak to visit the lavatories and so urinate into these bottles. At the end of the day, these are disposed of at the hospital dustbins (where other disease-carrying unmentionables are also thrown into) from where the cleaners retrieve them, pour away the various liquids they saw inside them and sell them to these “natural beverage” producers, who may only rinse them with even the unhealthy water available to them and use them to bottle the “Zobos”, “Kunus”and the diverse “natural” fruit juices they bottle and sell to unsuspecting Nigerians.

Now, if companies that are subjected to periodic inspections by regulatory agencies could be caught cutting corners to the detriment of the health of the citizenry, what should one expect from people who produce these beverages in the safe confines of their homes and whose eyes are solely glued to the profits they are expecting to rake in?  And so, with your N100 or even less, you buy and take home diseases-bearing liquids in unsterilised bottles from which you might contract ailments that might either eventually take your life or consume millions of naira before leaving you. Now, while you are chewing on that, let’s look at another aspect of the problem.

Recently, I read a report that a Lagos-based journalist had taken ill after consuming some fruits he bought from some vendors. He was taken to the hospital where he eventually died. The doctors blamed the death on food poisoning. It is a popular belief   in Lagos that traders use some chemicals (calcium carbide and others) to ripen fruits or even preserve them from over-ripening and spoiling. According to a Wikipaedia entry, “when calcium carbide comes in contact with moisture, it produces acetylene gas, which is quite similar in its effects to the natural ripening agent, ethylene. Acetylene acts like ethylene and accelerates the ripening process.”

Now, have you noticed that sometimes after consuming some fruits – banana, mango, pawpaw, etc., you would begin to have this strange, uncomfortable taste lingering down your throat. That’s the residual taste of the chemical used in accelerating the ripening of the fruits or preserving them. And they could be very dangerous to health. The best alternative for wary consumers has been to go to some markets where the local farmers supply these fruits, buy unripe ones, take them home and keep them until they become ripe naturally and ready for consumption.

Nigeria is suddenly having too many cases of organ failures, cancer and other malignant ailments attacking both young and old people. These have largely been attributed to these chemicals people take in while consuming these fruits and other food items. Now, who among our health bodies and regulatory agencies are trying to find out if there is indeed a proliferation of these harmful practices by fruit sellers (as is widely believed) and are deploying  preventive measures to save the lives of Nigerians? The other day, a video of a girl peeling some unripe oranges was in circulation. After removing the outer coverings, the girl would dip them into some liquid in a basin and immediately the oranges would assume the colour of ripe ones? Now, in the process of doing this, who knows the amount of poison transferred into the oranges?

There are other varieties of these dangerous practices. Recently, a video featuring some beans sellers (who were heard discussing in the Hausa language) spraying the Sniper brand of pesticide on the beans they had spread on large mats, perhaps, to prevent weevils from attacking them, was widely circulated on the social media, especially, WhatsApp. It is popular knowledge that Sniper is one of the deadliest pesticides today. Most of the cases of suicides reported in Nigeria in the recent past had showed that majority of the people involved had used it to end their lives, prompting calls for it to be banned in the country.

Now how can human beings use this same deadly poison to safeguard a favourite food item from infestation by weevils? How far can Nigerians go to sell poisoned food items just to make huge profits?  What are the authorities and regulatory agencies doing about this? Have they investigated it, and what are they doing to discourage this dangerous method of preservation? Or would they continue to pretend that those viral videos had not got to them? Shouldn’t the people perpetrating these criminal activities be fished out and prosecuted for attempted murder to serve as deterrence? By the way, what healthy alternatives have the authorities offered to the grains traders for the preservation of their goods since it is possible that these fellows engaging in these dangerous practices might be quite oblivious of the many lives they are harming, including their own, since they also eat from their stock of the commodities?

Some months ago, the social media was awash with reports that dried fish sellers also use this same Sniper to prevent weevil infestation of their fishes. Now, what is being done to save the eager consumers of this food item relished by many? There is also the information trending on the social media that people use a mixture of transformer oil and vegetable oil to fry “Akara”, “Puff-puff”, Yam, etc., for sale while butchers and fish sellers also use Sniper to ward off flies from their wares.

Again, on January 10, 2020, the Nigerian Tribune published an editorial on the warning reportedly handed down by the Osun State Government to caterers and food vendors involved in “pernicious practice of using paracetamol to [boil and] tenderise meat and using bleaching detergents for cassava processing, ostensibly to induce whiteness in the popular foods, fufu and gari.” According to the Tribune, at a joint news conference in Oshogbo, the Governor’s Special Adviser on Public Health, Siji Olamiju, and the state Commissioner for Information and Civic Orientation, Mrs. Funke Egbemode, stressed the “harmful effects of the practices on vital organs of the body such as the liver, kidneys, heart and the small intestines.”

Now, with all these harmful situations facing hapless Nigerians, where are our public health authorities? Where are NAFDAC and SON? The story out there is that NAFDAC died with Dr. Dora Akunyili. And as for SON, I wonder if anybody has ever taken them serious. There is another body called the Consumer Protection Council, what exactly is it doing to justify its existence? How is it “protecting” the consumer?

Not too long ago, I stumbled on a news item conveying the warning by the Director-General of National Agency for Food, Drug Administration and Control, Prof. Mojisola Adeyeye, about the grievous damage fruits ripened with calcium carbide could inflict on the health of the people. Now what are Nigerians supposed to do with this vacuous warning? Do they have the equipments for detecting fruits ripened by calcium carbide? Shouldn’t NAFDAC be out there fishing out the people involved in this devilish practice and prosecuting them to deter others in order to save the lives of Nigerians? How exactly will this empty warning help save Nigerian lives?

In societies where human lives are valued, regulatory agencies do not just sit behind their huge desks and issue useless warnings. They swing into actions to halt every practice that poses danger to the lives of the citizenry. They prosecute the perpetrators to deter others. Well, what do you expect from a country where some group of herdsmen wake up almost daily to kill, maim, rape and sack villages without any consequence? And the authorities do not lift any finger to ensure they are punished for their crimes. Does Nigeria qualify to be called the land of rational human beings? A huge shame!

Governor of Ondo State, Rotimi Akeredolu, has called for calm among residents after the first case of Coronavirus was recorded in the state.

Akeredolu, who spoke in a television broadcast, said there was no need for panic as his administration was already working to curtail the spread of the virus.

He said the military officer, who tested positive for Coronavirus, had been in isolation since his return to the state from India.

Akeredolu said, "Only one case; I can assure you that it will not be more than this but whatever happens we will take it.

"So, don't be anxious and let us observe the social and physical distancing. The people should not cluster together."

The governor further noted that a palliative committee had been established to cushion the effects of the movement restriction currently in place in the state on the people.

Earlier, Commissioner for Health in the state, Dr Wahab Adegbenro, disclosed that all those, who had made contact with the confirmed case, are being traced in order to prevent a spread of the virus.

The Nigerian Government has attacked Nobel Laureate, Prof Wole Soyinka, over his criticism of government's lockdown order of Lagos, Ogun and FCT to curb the spread of Coronavirus in the country.

Soyinka had earlier in the week said that President Muhammadu Buhari had no constitutional backing to declare a 14-day total ban on movement in the three cities.

Buhari made the declaration on Sunday during a nationwide broadcast on the global health crisis and measures his administration was taking to stop the spread in Nigeria.

Responding to Soyinka's comments on Wednesday, the Presidency through Senior Special Assistant to President Buhari on Media and Publicity, Garba Shehu, urged Nigerians to ignore the famous writer because he had no expertise in matters of health and science generally.

In a statement, Shehu said, “The esteemed Nobel Laureate, Prof Wole Soyinka, made comments on the legal status and description of 14-day lockdown announced by President Muhammadu Buhari.

“Soyinka is not a medical professor. His qualifications are in English literature, and his prizes are for writing books and plays for theatres. He is of course entitled to his opinions – but that is exactly all they are: semantics, not science. They cannot – and should not - therefore be judged as professional expertise in this matter in any shape or form.

“Across the world – from parts of the United States and China, to countries including the United Kingdom and France, government-mandated lockdowns are in place to slow and defeat the spread of Coronavirus.

"All have been declared and made necessary based on medical and scientific evidence. The guidance of the Nigerian Government’s medical specialists is to advise the same.

“As for the legality of the lockdown, the Government of Nigeria’s primary duty in law and action is the defence of the people of Nigeria.

"We face a global pandemic. Nigeria is now affected. The scientific and medical guidance the world over is clear: the way to defeat the virus is to halt its spread through limitation of movement of people.

"We ask the people of Nigeria to trust the words of our doctors and scientists, and not fiction writers at this time of national crisis.’’
