Micro-blogging platform, Twitter announced on Thursday the launch of Twitter Blue, the company’s first subscription service designed for power users willing to pay a monthly fee for exclusive features.

This is the company’s first attempt at a subscription business model and could diversify Twitter’s revenue streams.

According to the company's first-quarter earnings report, advertising makes up more than 86% of Twitter’s revenue.

Shares of Twitter were up around 2% on Thursday morning.

The service is rolling out to users in Canada and Australia respectively for $3.49 and $4.49 in local currencies per month. The company did not say when Twitter Blue will become available for tweeps in the United States.

The social media company set goals earlier this year to accelerate the speed at which it launches new products.

It hopes to reach 315 million monetisable daily active users by the end of 2023 and double its annual revenue to $7.5 billion by the end of 2023.

Twitter Blue users will get an Undo Tweet feature that allows them to set a customisable timer of up to 30 seconds to take back a tweet if it needs to be fixed. The feature is not quite an edit button, a feature often requested by users, but it will allow subscribers to preview what their tweets look like and adjust them before they’re published.

Other features include the ability to bookmark folders so users can organise tweets they save; a Reader Mode that makes it easier to read long threads; the option to customize the Twitter app icons on their phones; access to colour themes for the Twitter app and dedicated customer support.

The Senior Pastor of the Citadel Global Community Church, formerly known as Latter Rain Assembly, Tunde Bakare, has said that President Muhammadu Buhari never listens to his ideas on how to move Nigeria forward.

Bakare was Buhari’s running mate in the 2011 presidential election — the duo contested on the platform of the Congress for Progressive Change.

Tunde Bakare

Speaking with BBC Yoruba, Bakare said Nigerian leaders are corrupt and have steered the country to its current state.

He said many people voted for Buhari because they thought that, as a former military leader, he would understand the nation’s complexities and be able to lead the country on the right path.

“Things have turned upside down. They say the elders are the ones disrupting the nation, but it started with the youths. The coup plotters in the military — there are people that were 20 years old, 30 years old — they are the ones that brought us to where we are. They brought us here before they grew old in the job and refused to leave,” Bakare said.

“If a military takes over a country, they won’t leave until things become bad. They will plunder every conceivable object is gone. However, there are still good ones among the bad eggs.

“Our leaders are corrupt. Let’s assume the military destroyed the government, what happened to our civilian government? Although many of them moved from the military, we still don’t know if we are in a military or civilian era. Nigeria will continue to deteriorate unless we turn around and make amends and ask those stronger than us to help us.
“I was in my house when I started the Save Nigeria Group. It was to help the country. I never knew (Goodluck) Jonathan or (Umaru) Yar’Adua. God only showed me a vision and I started moving around, saying ‘do not let Nigeria go bad’. Professor Wole Soyinka, (Retired Gen. Alani) Akinrinade, renowned people of Yoruba extraction joined us.

“That was where Buhari first saw me and decided he could bring me close. We too, we wanted to know his intentions for Nigeria. That was how we met in Kaduna. I had in mind to help Nigeria but when (Obafemi) Awolowo could not become the president, as a good person, I washed my hands off.

“People thought someone who had once served as a military head of state, that once he becomes president, Nigeria will be better and progressive but instead of things to get better, everything has worsened.

“But God is not asleep. Some of my friends accuse me of bringing Buhari to power. I explained to them that he is someone I used to see and discuss the way forward with, that he would listen but once you leave, nothing comes out of the discussion. Then I decided to stay back.”

Bakare, however, said he had not lost hope and he keeps praying that there will be a turnaround for the country.

On the campaign for Oodua Republic, Bakare said such agitations are a result of the state of affairs in the country.

“I have never seen Sunday Igboho. This is the time he is supposed to come see me but he is unable to come. But he has met with some prominent Nigerians,” he said.

“If things were okay; people could feed themselves, have good jobs, no kidnapping… before, nobody was asking for what Sunday Igboho is agitating for presently. But I know that when the time is right, people will say Yoruba leaders alerted them because now the elders have not told them to ask for Oodua Republic.
“We should find a way of making Nigeria progress. We can’t leave our country for another. We have to take a stand and make Nigeria work. When separatist groups see that things are getting better in the nation, they will drop their grievances.”

The microblogging platform, Twitter, has yanked off a video which showed President Muhammadu Buhari threatening to deal with youths of the South-East.

The video, according to Twitter, might have violated the rules or ”may be in response to a valid and properly scoped request from an authorized entity in a given country".

The video was initially posted on the official handle of the Government of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, @NGRPresident, where Buhari warned that ‘rude shock’ awaits unpatriotic elements promoting insurrection and burning critical national assets across the country.

In the video, Buhari noted the role he played alongside other Nigerian military officers in the Nigerian Civil War of 1966-70, which led to the murder of over three million Igbos.

The last part of a Twitter thread transcribing the president’s address was taken down by the app on Wednesday.

This was after many Nigerians reported massively, Buhari's Twitter account likening the tweet to comments made by former United States President, Donald Trump which caused his ban from the social media app.

However, Twitter explained why it could not ban the Twitter account of the President.

It rather pulled down the particular tweet.

Meanwhile, Lai Mohammed, Nigeria’s information minister, has accused Twitter of not being clear in its standard for deleting tweets, implying the US company has a longstanding bias against the Nigerian government.

“The mission of Twitter in Nigeria is very very suspect,” Mohammed said.

But when a similar thing happened at the [US] Capitol, it became an insurrection.

“Twitter’s mission in Nigeria, citing those two examples, is very suspect. What is their agenda?”

The Governor of Benue State, Samuel Ortom says President Muhammadu Buhari and the ruling party, the All Progressives Congress (APC), have failed Nigerians in all areas of governance.

Ortom said this on Thursday while inaugurating Moniya-Iseyin Road, held at the Akinyele Local Government Secretariat, Moniya, Ibadan.

He said the road will enhance the socio-economic development of the state and play a major role in engineering a modern Oyo State.

Ortom, who appeared to be bitter about the situation of the country, described the ruling APC as a complete failure.

Ortom added that the PDP has been demonstrating good leadership as evident in its governors delivering laudable infrastructure projects.

He said, “The PDP is working despite all the economic and security challenges. The PDP has demonstrated leadership and that is why we are commissioning this road today, which is amazing.

“I want to challenge the APC in this country, because they have failed. Economically, security-wise, they have failed. Socially and politically, the APC government is in deficit. Government is all about providing security for lives and property. Government is about providing infrastructure like the one we are doing here today.

“Let me, once again call on the APC Federal Government to rise up and give leadership because our people are in pain. From North-East, North-West to North-Central to South-South, South-East and South-West, everyone is faced with security challenges and without security, there can be no meaningful development except in PDP-controlled states.

“In 2015, the mantle of leadership was given to APC. But from all indications, it is clear to every Nigerian that APC does not have the capacity to deliver. Go and check, economically, how much was one dollar when APC came into government in 2015?

"What was the nature of our security in this country when APC took over power? What was our social relationship in this country? Politically too, where are we? But let us work hard and be praying. As we pray, whether Muslims or Christians, let us also apply work because faith without work is death."

The apex Igbo socio-cultural organisation, Ohanaeze Ndigbo, has alleged that there are conspiracies against the South-Eastern region by ’those who want to destabilise the region’.

Speaking with SaharaReporters on Thursday, Okechukwu Isiguzoro, Secretary-General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo said the insurrection in the South-East is caused by some northerners who want Igbo people to denigrate into civil disobedience that will open them up for attacks.

Isiguzoro was reacting to a statement by the Secretary of Onion Dealers Association in Imo State, Halilu Muhammad, who noted that the association had withdrawn onion shipments to the South-East until further notice.

SaharaReporters had earlier reported how members of the association claimed they lost over N13 million to the recent seizure of onion trucks heading to the South-East.

Muhammad had made a claim that gunmen intercepted two onion trucks heading to the South-East and sold them to locals for N9,000 per bag instead of N15,000.

Ohanaeze, however, described it as a simple strategy aimed at using the weapon of hunger against the people of the South-East.

Isiguzoro noted that the Ohanaeze will never instigate the stoppage of palm oil shipment to the Northern region.

He noted that the insecurities ravaging the region are allegedly caused by a northern cartel that wants to deny Igbo people their rightful position in Nigeria.

Ohanaeze however vowed that it would never allow Igbo people to stoop low to civil disobedience but rather allow peace to reign.

Isiguzoro said, “We have observed that all the things happening to South-East are well-coordinated attacks by a cartel that wants to destabilise South-East for economic and political reasons.

“First, you hear the National Chairman of Arewa telling the northerners to leave the South-East that the region is no longer safe for them. You have also seen the American embassy warning the people of southern Nigeria that northern bandits and Boko Haram are moving to the South to destabilise the South, particularly the South-East.

“You have seen President Muhammadu Buhari threatening to unleash the war experience against the Igbos. And currently, we can see the perishable goods. They have done it before and they are using hunger as a strategy to ensure that the South-East does not keep up the political aspiration for 2023.

“All these are the handiwork of northern cartel aimed at denying Igbos their rightful position in Nigeria and pushing them to civil disobedience that will lead to another civil war but the South-East will overcome all these evil conspiracies.

”Igbos are known all over the world as emergency experts that can handle any delicate situation and turn it into a gold mine.

“Ohanaeze will not instigate the blockage of palm oil to the North because Igbos have over N22 trillion worth of investments and property in the 19 northern states and whatever has been happening, including the (Ahmed) Gulak assassination is to prompt the repeat of 1966 massacre but we will resist them this time around.

“We are calling on those who are behind these to stop before it is too late, whether they block onions or do not block onions to the South-East, we will overcome this conspiracy.

“Most of them are surprised that 51 years ago, we came out of civil war and we rebuilt our cities and they are trying to destroy our cities so they have unleashed insecurity, they have threatened us with civil war again, about killing of 3 million Igbos, mostly children and women.

“They have threatened us with blockage of food to the South-East. They have even killed their own person in the South-East to instigate a crisis in the North but we are calling on the Northern governors, we are calling on patriotic Nigerians living in the 19 northern states, who are not part of this conspiracy to ensure that we promote things that will bind us together rather than things that will lead us to separation and that will lead us to go our separate ways.

“This is the right time to checkmate this erroneous or this evil plan against the people of the South-East. But remember the dynamics and indices of 1966 have changed, we are now in the global world. Those factors that made them have the upper hand in 1966 are no longer feasible in 2021. Igbos will fight them at their doorstep but for now, we are calling for peace.”
