Yoruba socio-cultural group, Afenifere, has slammed President Muhammadu Buhari over the worsening insecurity in the country.

Afenifere, in an interview with SaharaReporters, lamented that while the President enjoys heavy security in his hometown in Daura, bandits are attacking helpless residents in other parts of Katsina State.

Buhari had visited Daura, his home town in Katsina State, on Friday amid heavy security presence in his residence.

Less than 24 hours after his arrival, bandits invaded Government Science Secondary School in Kankara Local Government Area of Katsina State on Saturday, whisking some students away.

The development has continued to generate outrage with many Nigerians slamming the President for enjoying a heavy security presence while his people live at the mercy of bandits and kidnappers.

Speaking with SaharaReporters, the National Publicity Secretary, Afenifere, Yinka Odumakin, said Nigeria had become ungovernable under Buhari, adding that he had continued to ignore essential issues.

He said, "Nigeria is becoming ungovernable under President Buhari: the governance is shaking under him daily, and he's not doing anything. It is only the protesters he can be reading riots acts to.

"There is a failure under him today, and he is not doing anything. It was only last Thursday that the National Assembly invited him and he refused to go, which shows clearly that for him, he's not governing, he's just reigning."

The Afenifere spokesman added that the President had shown that he did not have the interest of the country at heart but somewhat interested in power.

"His going to Katsina in a helipad is a condition of him reigning, not governing. He's not governing at all. Nigeria is not being governed at the moment at all. While the President enjoys heavy security, the citizens do not."

A civil society organisation, Campaign for Democracy, has stated that President Muhammadu Buhari risks being kidnapped over the worsening banditry and insecurity in the country, especially in the North.

In an interview with SaharaReporters, the CD President, Abdul Usman, lamented that while the President is surrounded by heavy security in his hometown in Daura, bandits were attacking helpless residents in other parts of Katsina State.

Buhari had visited Daura, his home town in Katsina State, on Friday amid heavy security presence for a week-long personal trip.

But less than 24 hours after his arrival, bandits had invaded Government Science Secondary School in Kankara Local Government Area of Katsina State on Saturday, killing a security guard and whisking some students away.

The development has sparked outrage with many Nigerians slamming the President for enjoying a heavy security presence while his people live at the mercy of bandits and kidnappers.

Speaking with SaharaReporters, the CD President, Abdul Usman, said the President was aware of the state of insecurity in Katsina and is taking caution to avoid being a victim of the banditry he has refused to fight.

He said, "As the President is in Katsina now and if not for the presence of heavily armed security men with him, the President might as well be picked up. They might kidnap him, or we might end up without a President in this country because his state, Katsina, is a volatile place. He has not taken care of it, let's allow him to face the consequences.

"When he leaves office in 2023, he should face the music himself and see what his people are facing. Let him face it because the case of Katsina is one too many."

The CD president added that it was unfortunate that despite concerted efforts to bring the worsening security in the state to Buhari's attention, he had continued to turn a blind eye to the situation.

He added, "A Kaduna-based businessman, Mahdi Shehu, had written to EFCC petitioning the governor on issues surrounding security votes but the petition is lying there only for the IG of police to go and arrest the person that brought up this petition.

"So, the issue of Katsina is very pathetic, and I think the President and other people deliberately don't have the plight of people at heart, not just Katsina people, but the whole nation of Nigeria. The President does not have our nation at heart."

Ten young men from Jigawa State and their driver travelling to Kano State for the Nigerian Navy screening examination and aptitude test died in a ghastly road accident on Saturday.

The vehicle conveying them had reportedly rammed into a trailer, which was wrongly parked by the road.

The Nigerian Navy Aptitude Test for the 2020 recruitment exercise was scheduled for today at 30 centres across the country.

Reports stated that the ten candidates left their homes around 5 am, hoping to reach their destination on time for the exam but they had met with an untimely death.

A resident, Abba Muhammad, identified the deceased persons as; Auwalu Mohammed; Mutari Sule; Ibrahim Sani; Katimu Muhammad; Dauda Salisu; Musbahu Yakubu, Rabiu Muhammad-Ado; Salim Muhammad-Sani; Akibu Ubali-sale; and Murtala Salisu, while another, who died in the hospital, is yet to be identified.

A brother to one of the victims, Muhammad, said that reckless driving and carefree attitude of the state's authorities to administer punishment on reckless drivers was responsible for the reoccurring crash on the Gagarawa-Kano Highway.

The spokesperson for the Jigawa State Police Command, Audu Jinjiri, who confirmed the development, said the accident involved a commercial Golf 3 wagon, with registration number, AA 320 TAR, Jigawa, which was conveying 12 passengers to Kano.

"The driver, Auwalu Muhammad, 30, was driving from the Gagarawa Local Government Area to Kano with the said passengers. On reaching Abdullahi Masallaci, he rammed into a stationed DAF truck," Jinjiri said.

"The truck, with registration number DUT 201, Jigawa was parked by one Aminu Hassan, 25, of Mallamadori Local Government Area of Jigawa, after developing a mechanical fault.

"The truck was parked and occupied almost half of an oncoming lane. As a result, ten persons, including the driver, lost their lives on the spot, while two others are responding to treatment. One other victim later died in the hospital, and all corpses (are) released to relatives for burial," he explained.

The spokesperson said the driver of the truck had been arrested and would be prosecuted soon.

Meanwhile, one Adamu Usman shared photos of the ten victims on Facebook, describing the tragedy as a sorrowful moment for Jigawa State and Nigeria.

He wrote, "Sad day, sad news as Jigawa lost ten youths in an auto crash on their way for the navy examination (screening exercise).

"I am in tears and just speechless. My prayer for these departed souls is, May God Almighty forgive their shortcomings and grant them eternal rest. May He also give their parents, family and relatives etc. the fortitude to bear the irreplaceable loss. Rest in peace, our youths."

The Nigerian government has rescued a mother of four, Omowunmi Aladeboyeje, who was trafficked to Cairo, Egypt.

The Nigerians in Diaspora Commission in a statement signed by its spokesman, Abdur-Rahman Balogun, said Aladeboyeje was tricked to Egypt by her elder brother. He informed her about a nursing job in the United States.

Balogun added that the Ondo State indigene is presently on her way to Okitipupa, Ondo State.

The statement reads, "Trafficking: NIDCOM facilitates the return of another trafficked girl home, as Dabiri-Erewa restates her appeals to youth travelling out illegally."

The agency said the victim, an auxiliary nurse, was sexually harassed, beaten, and imprisoned at home by her abusers.

NIDCOM said, "She was trafficked on March 17, 2020, and claimed to be sexually harassed regularly, beaten frequently and home imprisoned sometimes.

"Rhoda, a mother of four, was trafficked by her immediate elder brother who claimed there was a nursing job opportunity in America.

"The NIDCOM boss said Omowunmi's story is the same as that of many victims lured abroad under the guise of securing them a job. She insisted that the traffickers must be arrested, named, shamed and punished for their dastardly act."

Masari said, "This is a big tragedy, and our concern and commitment towards rescuing the schoolboys is beyond measure. We can't say we are more concerned than the parents, but we deeply share in their pains, knowing full well that we are responsible for the protection of their lives and well-being.

"The soldiers have informed me that they are currently battling with the bandits, and we will do our best to rescue them all. We have ordered the closure of all schools and directed that all the schoolboys be returned to their parents."

Police have arrested two members of a transnational kidnap syndicate involved in the abduction of a United States citizen, Philippe Walton, in his farm at Masalata village in the Niger Republic.

The US forces had on Saturday, October 31 rescued 27-year-old Walton after he was taken hostage by the armed men in the Niger Republic and held in the Northern part of Nigeria.

His rescue by the US forces on the country's soil sparked criticism from some individuals who argued that the operation was a proof of the inefficiency of the Nigerian military.

However, the police spokesperson, Frank Mba, in a statement on Thursday, said Walton's suspected kidnappers, Aliyu Abdullahi, 21, and Aliyu Umaru, 23, were arrested on November 25, 2020.

The statement read: "The two suspects – members of a 15-man kidnap gang of Nigerian-Nigerien extraction, led by Barte Dan Alhaji and Dan Buda – were arrested following a special intelligence-led operation aimed at arresting the criminal gang, disrupting and halting other criminal activities by them.

"Investigations by the Intelligence Response Team reveal that the gang was plotting other abductions to avenge the death of their cohorts – four Nigeriens and two Nigerians – who died during the rescue operations.

"The Force is collaborating with its Nigerien counterpart in the investigations to apprehend other members of the transnational syndicate currently at large."

Mba added that the Inspector General of Police, Mohammed Adamu, was already working with other members of the West African Police Chiefs Organisation as part of efforts to tackle transnational crimes in the sub-region.

The United States has given reasons why it placed Nigeria for the first time on a religious freedom blacklist.

US Secretary of State, Mike Pompeo, had on Monday designated Nigeria as a "Country of Particular Concern" for religious freedom, the rare inclusion of a fellow democracy in the US effort to shame nations into action.

Sam Brownback, United States Ambassador-at-Large for International Religious Freedom.

"Today the US designates Burma, China, Eritrea, Iran, Nigeria, the DPRK, Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, Tajikistan, and Turkmenistan as countries of concern under the International Religious Freedom Act of 1998 for engaging systematic, ongoing, egregious religious freedom violations," Pompeo announced on Twitter.

The Nigerian government, however, rejected the tag, arguing that it "protects religious freedom".

"Nigeria does not engage in religious freedom violation; neither does it have a policy of religious persecution. Victims of insecurity and terrorism in the country are adherents of Christianity, Islam and other religions," Lai Mohammed, Minister of Information and Culture said.

Samuel Brownback, US Ambassador-at-large for International Religious Freedom, in a press statement on Thursday, accused the Nigerian government of tolerating religious violence.

He said: "The secretary and the world have great concern about what's taking place in Nigeria at this time, and some terrorist groups are organising and pushing into the country.

"We're seeing a lot of religious-tinged violence taking place in that country and indeed in West Africa. It's an area of growing concern about what's happening, in particular the tension that's taking place there between religious groups. And it's often the religious affiliation that is used to try to recruit and inspire violent acts.

"You've got expanded terrorist activities, you've got a lot of it associated around religious affiliations, and the government's response has been minimal to not happening at all.

"Several cases – there have not been criminal cases brought forward by the government. Terrorism continues to happen and grow, in some places, unabated."
