An associate of Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State on Tuesday said though the coast was not clear for the governor to move to the African Democratic Congress, there was a possibility for the governor to consider the option soon.

There have been speculations that Makinde could leave the Peoples Democratic Party, which became stronger after he exited from a WhatsApp platform for PDP chieftains in the state because he was challenged by the state’s publicity secretary of the party, Akeem Olatunji, to do something about insecurity in the state.

An online medium on Monday reported that Governor Makinde had concluded plans to dump his party for the ADC ahead of 2023 elections.

The medium said Makinde would leave the PDP ahead of the next general elections due to some disagreements between him and some chieftains of the party.

It was reported that Makinde would join the ADC immediately after the forthcoming local government elections in the state.

But Mr. Taiwo Adisa, Chief Press Secretary to Governor Makinde, in a swift reaction, described the story as “a concocted falsehood from purveyors of fake news, who are bent on maligning the governor at all cost”.

Adisa said contrary to the report, Makinde had no plan to join another party.

According to him, the governor has remained a strong pillar of the party for many years and is already leading the mission for its resurgence in the South-West.

Adisa alleged that the report in question raised all the red flags of fake news, as it was based on unverifiable claims from an unnamed source, adding that if the journalist and the editors of the medium had done due diligence, such falsehood would not have found its way into the public sphere.

The media aide added that an attempt to launch the concocted story shortly after some media outfits had tried to exaggerate the governor’s exit from a WhatsApp platform that purportedly belongs to the PDP, is negatively ingenious. See Also Politics PDP WhatsApp Platform: Makinde Has Right To Join, Exit Any Social Media Group –Media Aide

He described the publication as a clear signal that the war being waged against the Makinde administration through alleged fake news was showing no sign of abating.

However, a close associate of the governor in Ibadan said the rumour had an element of truth in it.

The source said the governor did not only have problems with the party structure in his state but in the whole South-West region.

"It is true Makinde may drop PDP but it is not certain. It is all politics and in politics, nothing is impossible. There are some people working against him in the South-West and as a leader of the party, he cannot allow anybody to rubbish him.

"People love him in the state and he can win anytime any day. Even those fighting against him are benefiting from him. There are people who are interested in sharing the commonwealth of the state, rather than supporting him. But as 'Omoluabi' (a person of good character), Makinde cannot do that. If they take the party away from him, it is simply a means of destroying the party in Oyo State."

Three persons, including Mai-Kanuribe of Lagos, Alhaji Mustapha Muhammadu, have died in an accident involving the convoy of Governor Babagana Umara Zulum of Borno State.

SaharaReporters gathered that the accident occurred on Tuesday when the governor was heading to Maiduguri after a visit to his hometown in the Mafa Local Government Area, where he went for the membership revalidation exercise of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Zulum was accompanied by his deputy, Alhaji Umar Usman Kadafur, Senator Kashim Shettima of Borno Central, APC state party chairman, members of the state executive council, council chairmen, traditional rulers, top party members, among others.

“Unfortunately, while on their way back after the exercise, the vehicle conveying the Mai-Kanuribe of Lagos, Alhaji Mustapha Muhammadu, somersaulted after a tyre deflated along Mafa/Maiduguri Road, leading to his death and that of two other passengers,” a source told SaharaReporters.

The incident comes a few months after Boko Haram terrorists ambushed Zulum’s convoy twice within 48-hour.

About 30 people, mostly security agents, who were in his convoy were killed by the insurgents along Cross Kauwa-Baga Road on September 25, 2020.

The victims include 12 policemen, five soldiers, four members of a government-backed militia and nine civilians.

Less than 48 hours later, the group opened fire on the governor’s convoy along Monguno-Maiduguri Road.

A former Minister of Aviation, Femi Fani-Kayode, is now financially broke and already sold some of his properties, SaharaReporters has gathered.

According to family sources, Fani-Kayode, who may soon join the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) six years after he left for the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), is financially down and struggling to maintain his extravagant lifestyle.

The former minister had on Monday met with the Yobe State Governor and Chairman of the APC Caretaker/Extraordinary Convention Planning Committee (CECPC), Mai Mala Buni and Kogi State Governor, Yahaya Bello at Buni’s guest house in Abuja.

The closed-door meeting, which lasted for about an hour, was brokered by Bello, who is also the Chairman of the party’s mobilisation and sensitisation committee for the ongoing membership registration and revalidation exercise.

Explaining why he met APC leaders, Fani-Kayode, a staunch critic of the ruling party, claimed the meeting centred on how to move Nigeria forward.

“Yesterday I had the honour & privilege of having a very productive & important meeting with the Nat. Chairman of the APC, Gov. Mai Buni of Yobe state & Gov. Yahaya Bello of Kogi state. We discussed the state of the nation, national issues, party politics & the way forward.

“These meetings are wide-ranging & ongoing & I am delighted to be involved in them. Despite the obvious benefits & wisdom in this noble initiative it amazes me that some people should feel that it is wrong for me to sit with other leaders in the country to discuss issues which touch and concern the national cohesion, future and stability of our country.

“This is a time in which we must set all our differences aside, build bridges and come together as one lest our country drifts into fratricidal butchery and civil war. It is right & proper for us to talk & to attempt to join hands across political, religious & regional lines to save Nigeria,” he posted on Twitter.

However, sources revealed that the former minister, apart from being broke, is also afraid of getting the ‘Olisa Metuh treatment’ meted out to him in his ongoing multi-billion naira corruption cases.

Metuh, a former National Publicity Secretary of the PDP, was convicted of money laundering by a Federal High Court in Abuja in February 2020.

Metuh and his company, Destra Investment Limited, had been prosecuted by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) for the N400 million he allegedly received from the office of the National Security Adviser (NSA) in 2014.

However, the Court of Appeal, Abuja Division, in December 2020, nullified the seven-year jail sentence given to the former PDP spokesperson, saying the Justice Okon Abang was biased in the handling of the cases.

Fani-Kayode was arraigned in 2016, alongside a former Minister of State for Finance, Nenadi Usman; Danjuma Yusuf, and a firm, Joint Trust Dimensions Ltd over N4.9bn alleged fraud.

The former minister, who was also the Director of Publicity for ex-President Goodluck Jonathan’s presidential campaign organisation for the 2015 election, was accused of conspiring with the others to, directly and indirectly, retain various sums which the EFCC claimed they ought to have reasonably known were proceeds of crime.

In one of the counts, the defendants were accused of conspiring among themselves to “indirectly retain the sum of N1,500, 000,000.00 which sum you reasonably ought to have known forms part of the proceeds of an unlawful act to wit: stealing.”

The four were also accused of indirectly retaining N300m, N400m and N800m, all proceeds of corruption, according to the EFCC.

Fani-Kayode was accused of directly using parts of the money at various times, including N250,650,000.00, which he allegedly used between March 20 and 25, 2015.

He was also accused of making a cash transaction of N24m with one Olubode Oke, said to still be at large, on February 12, 2015 “to Paste Poster Co of 125, Lewis Street, Lagos Island.”

The duo were said to have made the transaction without going through any financial institution, an act the EFCC claimed was contrary to sections 1(a) and 16(d) of the Money Laundering (Prohibition) (Amendment) Act, 2012, and punishable under Section 16(2)(b) of the same Act.

Months later, the former minister was rearrested and solely arraigned on five counts bordering on money laundering to the tune of N26 million.

According to the EFCC, Fani-Kayode allegedly received the sum of N26 million from the office of the former National Security Adviser (ONSA), Col. Sambo Dasuki (retd.) in 2014.

“He is currently broke, when he was broke during the former President Olusegun Obasanjo era, he started attacking Obasanjo until he was offered a position which fuelled his drug filled lifestyle. As soon as he got a job with Obasanjo, he started attacking Prof. Wole Soyinka and Chinua Achebe. That was why Obasanjo said what politicians need to do for Fani-Kayode to hail them is to give him food,” a source told SaharaReporters.

“Years after, he started attacking former President Goodluck Jonathan. Jonathan’s wife was so scared of him that she begged her husband to employ him, that was why he was made the spokesman for the PDP’s presidential campaign committee.

“When APC came on board, he started attacking President Muhammadu Buhari because of the various corruption cases against him but the late chief of staff, Abba Kyari, was shielding him from trial. Now that Kyari is dead and his trial is progressing well, he is afraid that he might get Metuh’s treatment. He is expected to be in court on February 23 and 24, 2021. He doesn’t want to go to prison.

“In addition, he is very broke. I hope you are aware he just had a new baby. He doesn’t even have money for the unknown wife and baby’s upkeep. So, he started reaching out to APC stalwarts. He also told some of us that journalists conspired against his nationwide tour of states where he was initially making money.”

SaharaReporters, however, gathered that some APC chieftains, especially the powerful northern oligarchs don’t want him to return to the party.

They accused him of being in the habit of insulting President Buhari and people of the northern region for several years.

Fani-Kayode was last year attracted public criticism for his verbal assault on Eyo Charles, a journalist with Daily Trust, for asking him the source of funding of his recent tours during a press conference in Calabar, Cross River State.

Apart from describing Charles as "stupid", the former minister used other derogatory words on the journalist, drawing criticisms from far and near.

The journalist had asked him if he was being bankrolled by any politician or political group – a question that attracted verbal assault from the ex-minister.

“I’m saying this live on TV, put that thing down, what kind of stupid question is that? Bankrolling who? Do you know who you are talking to? I will not take any further questions from this man. Who do you think you are talking to? Go and report yourself to your publisher. I don’t want to take questions from this man, very stupid,” he said.

“I could see from your face before you got here how stupid you are. Don’t ever talk to me like that. I’m not a poor man and will never be, bankroll who? A former minister, a lawyer, don’t ever try that with me again, see me well, don’t ever. You are very rude, it’s not the standard of Daily Trust at all and I will report you to your publisher.”

The former minister eventually bowed to public pressure and apologised for his conduct.

SaharaReporters also exposed how his fourth marriage with Precious, his fourth wife, exploded over domestic violence that lasted for six years. See Also Scandal Femi Fani-Kayode’s Fourth Marriage Explodes Over Domestic Violence

The former minister, who had a number of marriages before meeting Precious, with whom he has four sons, including a set of two-year-old triplets, accused her of infidelity.

Sources told SaharaReporters that Fani-Kayode started physically abusing the ex-beauty queen from the first year of their marriage, the same fate that befell her predecessors.

The violence, it was gathered, increased as the years went by.

FFK, as the ex-minister is often referred to, was said to have ordered Precious to abort her last pregnancy, claiming it did not belong to him.

The sources said Precious ignored him but got beaten, including being hit in the belly for the recalcitrance.

A source said Fani-Kayode always hit the woman violently in the presence of their home helps and sometimes threatened her with a gun by sticking the weapon in her mouth to warn her against squealing.

He sometimes instructed his bodyguard to hit the ex-beauty queen.

Fani-Kayode’s first wife, Saratu Attah, whom he married when he was 22, was also regularly pummeled by him.

Sources said the woman, daughter of the late Adamu Attah, was viciously beaten for requesting a swimming pool in their home on Marine Road in Apapa, Lagos.

FFK's next marriage was to Yemisi Odesanya, daughter of a judge. She is now known as Yemisi Wada after remarrying.

In newspaper interviews, the woman told stories of Fani-Kayode's viciousness and lack of care for their daughters, the reason for which he was excluded from the marriage of one of them, Temitope, in 2014.

Despite the disconnect between him and the children, the former minister never fails to advertise his "love" for them on Facebook on their birthdays.

The National Association of Nigerian Students has appealed to unions within universities to suspend strike actions and allow for negotiations.

In a statement on Monday, NANs president, Sunday Asefon, said the university system is on the brink of collapse due to the incessant strikes embarked upon by the academic and non-academic staff.

He said students should be pitied, having wasted a whole academic session at home due to the COVID-19 lockdown and the Academic Staff Union of Universities’ strike.

Asefon said the ongoing strike by the Non-Academic Staff Union and the Senior Staff Union of Nigerian Universities would destabilise and demoralise the students.

"We call for restraint and beg our unions to allow further negotiation and suspend further strike in the interest of these promising future leaders," he said.

According to him, there should be a caution on the penchant for strike when dialogue could suffice.

He said, “NANS is of the humble opinion that unions can advocate the welfare of their members, but such shouldn’t be by ego, muscle flexing and rivalry, the way academic and non-academic unions in our universities have been exhibiting.

“It is unpatriotic on the side of the government and our unions to subject the country’s future leaders to these academic rigours and agonies.

“They should please pity the students and parents and return to schools immediately.

“As we speak, students in many of the universities that just resumed for the 2020/2021 academic session cannot complete their registration while those that had started have been finding it difficult to access lecture theatres that were under lock and key."

The Yoruba Nation Now (YNN) movement has called for the urgent eviction of killer herdsmen from the South-West region following their atrocities, including incessant abductions and killings.

The movement also appealed to all Yoruba people to protect themselves against any terror group perpetrating violence in the region.

The YNN movement went further to threaten that heads of security agencies protecting the murderous killer herders and providing coverage for them would be held accountable and responsible for all human rights violations under their watch at the International Criminal Court (ICC).

In a statement signed by its spokesperson, Dr. Ola Ajanlekoko, the group noted that the recent happenings in states like Oyo, Ogun and Ondo cannot be overlooked as it urged the Nigerian government and security agencies to rise up to the task in protecting the lives and property of the people.

"It is no more news that the security situation in Yorubaland is precarious, dangerous and perilous.

"Our intention is to flush out any individuals, tribes, groups, associations and movements that are involved in crimes against humanity.

"With regards to the ongoing Fulani herdsmen’s killing spree and massacre all over Yorubaland, YNN will neither negotiate nor enter into any bargain on the safety of Yoruba Indigenes,” the movement said.

YNN posited that while the killings by suspected herdsmen could be “premeditated, planned, and intended to wipe the Yoruba out of existence,” Yoruba people must individually and collectively join hands to “openly condemn the genocidal tendencies of the Fulani foot soldiers; supported by the Federal Government in massacring our people”.

The movement advised Yoruba people to be vigilant and involved in protecting the region from killer herdsmen.

"Situations in Nigeria are so bad that there is a mass exodus of Yoruba youths to different parts of the world.

"Be vigilant in your environment and within your surroundings.

"Yorubas should be proactive and be fully involved in stopping the criminal activities being perpetrated by Fulani foot soldiers, within our communities, highways and forests,” the movement added.

The Ondo State Security Network Agency, also known as Amotekun, has arrested two Fulani herdsmen with their cows for destroying crops on some farms along Irese/Ijare Road, Ifedore Local Government Area of the state.

The state Commander of Amotekun Corps, Adeleye Olatunji, confirmed the development to SaharaReporters and warned herdsmen to stop destroying farms in the state.

Olatunji said the herders were apprehended with their cows following a complaint lodged by youths in the area over the destruction of their farmland.

“The youths came to the office to report that their farms were destroyed overnight by some herders and some of the herders came with guns and cutlasses, and they wounded one of them. The person they wounded also came to the office.

“So, we sent our men to join them and we were able to apprehend the one that was alleged to have gone there with a gun. Although we were not able to recover the gun from him, investigation is still ongoing. We have two of them with us now,” he told SaharaReporters.

Last month, Rotimi Akeredolu, governor of the state, issued a seven-day quit notice to the herdsmen operating illegally in the state’s forest reserves.

Apart from ejecting the herdsmen, the governor also banned underage grazing, night grazing, and movement of cattle within the cities and on highways.

The governor had said, "Today, we have taken major steps at addressing the root cause of kidnapping, in particular, and other nefarious activities detailed and documented in security reports, the press, and debriefings from victims of kidnap cases in Ondo State.

"As the chief law and security officer of the state, it is my constitutional obligation to do everything lawful to protect the lives and property of all residents of the state. In light of the foregoing, the following orders are hereby issued: All forest reserves in the state are to be vacated by herdsmen within the next seven days with effect from today, Monday, January 18, 2021."

The issue generated an uproar and after a meeting with different stakeholders, Akeredolu asked herdsmen to register with the government so that they can operate unhindered in the forest reserves.

Speaking to SaharaReporters recently, Adeleye said some of the herders who could not cope with the terms and conditions of the government had decided to leave the state.

The Senate has received a request from the President Muhammadu Buhari to confirm the recently appointed service chiefs.

The request which was contained in a letter dated 27th January, 2021, was read by the Senate President, Ahmad Lawan, during plenary on Tuesday.

According to a statement by Lawan’s aide, Ezrel Tabiowo, the letter from the President, read, “In compliance with the provisions of Section 18(1) of the Armed Forces Act. Cap A20 Laws the Federation of Nigeria 2004, I hereby forward for confirmation by the Senate, the appointment of the under listed officer as the Chief of Defence Staff and Services Chiefs of the Armed forces of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

“The appointees for confirmation are: Maj. Gen. Lucky Eluonye Onyenuchea lrabor – Chief of Defence Staff; Maj. Gen. Ibrahim Attahiru – Chief of Army Staff; Rear Admiral Awwal Zubairu Gambo – Chief of Naval Staff; and Air Vice Marshal Isiaka O. Amao – Chief of Air Staff.

“They are to replace the former Chief of Defence Staff, General Abayomi Olonisakin; Chief of Army Staff, Lt-Gen. Tukur Buratai; Chief of Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Ibok Ekwe Ibas; and Chief of Air Staff, Air Marshal Sadique Abubakar.”

Buhari had appointed the new security chiefs after persistent calls by Nigerians that he should rejig the security apparatus to tackle the country’s counter-terrorism war, especially in the North-East.

Following the appointment, human rights lawyers, including Femi Falana (SAN), said the President lacked the power to assign the new generals without the constitutional endorsement of the National Assembly.

Seven officials of the Non-Academic Staff Union and Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities at the University of Ilorin, Kwara State, were invited for questioning by the Department of State Services (DSS) over the ongoing nationwide strike by the body.

The officials arrested by the DSS included the National Financial Secretary of SSANU, M. J. Akanbi; branch Secretary of SSANU, T. M. Saheed; branch Secretary of NASU, Flourish Josephine; Kwara State Council State Secretary of NASU, Com. Owoeye as well as Idris Alata and Adejumo Olusola, stakeholders of NASU and SSANU respectively.

The joint action committee (JAC) of both unions had earlier directed its branches to embark on a strike starting from February 5.

The unions alleged that the government had refused to pay the minimum wage arrears/retirement benefits to ex-members in addition to the non-constitution of visitation panels to universities, and poor funding.

SSANU branch Chairman, Olumayowa Oyedepo, said the unions had instead commenced the strike action on Monday with total compliance by members until the DSS' invitation.

He said, “We commenced our nationwide strike today and went round the offices to check if our members are at work; we met two people that are not our members locked inside the Network Operating Centre (NOC) and after those guys came out of the room, we discovered that they were not our members, so we handed them over to the school security.

“The industrial action started on a good note with total compliance by members until the DSS came to invite our chairmen (SSANU and NASU) for questioning at their state office at the instance of the university management. The chairmen and other officials obliged the invitation, had discussions with the DSS operatives and have since returned to their houses,” he said.

The interrogation, Oyedepo said, lasted for about two hours before the officials were released.

Sulaimon Olooru, first son of the Seriki Fulani of Eggua community in the Yewa North Local Government Area of Ogun State, Adamu Olooru, has said the Nigeria Police are clueless about curtailing the criminal activities of killer Fulani herders across the country.

He said a new approach must be devised to fight the murderous nomads for peace to reign in the country.

Adamu told SaharaReporters in an exclusive interview on Monday in Eggua.

Speaking about his ordeal in the last few days, Sulaimon noted that the Nigeria Police had merely been fighting the killer Fulani herdsmen with theories with no practical improvements to show for it.

“I just left a meeting in Aiyetoro now. We had a meeting with the police. We have had a series of meetings like that in the past which yielded no successful results. Personally, I think the Nigeria Police cannot handle these criminal Fulanis. They don’t know what to do,” Sulaimon said.

He said the police do not even act on intelligence given to them prior to an attack and would rather wait for people to get killed before they respond.

“When we hear about the possibility of an attack or assault that might come from the nomads, we inform the police. But all that they tell you is to write a report. In most of these cases, they are even endangering the lives of people that give the information.

“In the end, they won’t make any moves until the incident has happened. And, they don’t arrest the criminals, instead, they will be asking you if you can identify one of the criminals. Who has the courage to identify criminals with guns and dangerous weapons?”

According to him, the lasting solution to the persistent crisis between farmers and herders in the country is that each region of the country should either manage their territory or break away.

“Honestly, I’m fed up with this crisis. I think what is best for all of us is to manage the land in each state or region by ourselves. Or, let regions break away in Nigeria if that will help us.

“I’m begging you, help us to tell the Nigerian government that if the police cannot handle insecurity in the country, we should go our separate ways.”

Sulaimon’s father, Seriki Fulani of Eggua, Adamu Olooru, recently fled the community after his house and a Fulani settlement where cattle were sold in the area, were burnt by some youths.

An Ibadan-based rights activist, Chief Sunday Adeyemo, popularly known as Sunday Igboho, had stormed Eggua with his lieutenants to assist the residents of the troubled community drive out Fulani herdsmen, whom they had blamed for the incessant kidnappings, killings and farm destructions in their area.

Shortly after Igboho's visit, the residence of Olooru was set ablaze as he was blamed for doing nothing about the criminal activities perpetrated by killer Fulani herders in the area.

Sulaimon told SaharaReporters that his father had relocated to Abeokuta following the incident.

He, however, did not disclose the area where his father moved to in Abeokuta.

The Northern States’ Governors Forum has said there are already threats of reprisals in the North over the ongoing eviction notices given to Fulani herdsmen in the South, adding that the forum is working hard to contain such threats.

The forum noted that it had resolved to “urgently meet” to discuss the issue holistically and look at the sources of conflicts between herdsmen and the southern communities.

The NGF submitted that the current system of herding conducted mainly through open grazing was no longer sustainable in view of the growing urbanisation and large populations of the country.

The forum reached these conclusions during its emergency meeting held virtually to discuss issues affecting the region – a meeting presided over by its Chairman and Governor of Plateau State, Simon Lalong.

It added that it would aggressively sensitise herdsmen to the need to adopt new methods of herding by ranching or other acceptable modern methods.

The governors, therefore, appealed to the Nigerian government to support states with grants to directly undertake pilot projects of modern livestock production that will serve as a springboard and evidence for breaking resistance to the full implementation of new methods of livestock production.

According to Daily Trust, the forum expressed concerns over the tension generated by the eviction order issued to herdsmen in some parts of the country. It is heating the already fragile security atmosphere.

It also said there were already ‘threats of reprisals” which the governors are working assiduously to contain.

The governors called for restraint from leaders, including those in the Southern parts of the country where passions are high.

Similarly, they called on all the “citizens of the North to continue to live in peace with all Nigerians irrespective of their origins and backgrounds”.

Also, they urged political leaders to segregate between criminality and social groups in their domains with a view to treating criminals like criminals. They condemned every form of “criminality whether from herders, hunters, or farmers occupying forest reserves illegally”.

A resolution was also reached to engage elders and youths in a robust discussion in order to douse the tension in the North, and a four-man committee was set up in that respect to be headed by the Chairman of the Northern Governors Forum.

The traditional ruler of Eggua of Yewa North Local Government in Ogun State, Oba Michael Adeleye Dosunmu, has said that the Seriki Fulani in the community, Adamu Olooru, wrote a letter of apology following attacks by killer Fulani herdsmen in 2015.

He said the letter was one of the several apologies made by the Fulani settlers in the community to show remorse for the atrocities perpetrated by their nomadic counterparts.

He however added that despite the apologies, the killing of people in the community and destruction of their farms did not stop.

Dosunmu told SaharaReporters on Monday through his spokesman, Otunba Adeyanju Adegbenro.

For instance, it was learnt that an apology letter signed by Olooru and dated 17th December, 2015, was written after the farm of Oba Dosunmu's wife was destroyed by cattle.

The Seriki Fulani then wrote a letter of apology, taking responsibility for it.

But residents of the community described the letter as the typical way the Seriki Fulani used to cover up the atrocities of Fulani herdsmen each time there was an attack.

They claimed that the 2015 incident was an attack that was beyond the destruction of the farm.

Olooru’s letter read, “I, the Seriki Fulani of Eggua, Alhaji Adamu Olooru, hereby tender my apology for the damage of Kabiesi Onigua wife’s farm by my cow. Sir, I have agreed for (sic) the settlement between each other for the purpose comply with code of conduct given to me on these issues.

“Sir. I will be very happy if my apology is accepted.”

The traditional ruler said the destruction of farms and kidnapping and killing of residents have worsened since then.

SaharaReporters also sighted various documents showing the efforts the community had made towards resolving the issues, including letters of apology from the Fulani community, Save Our Souls letters, pictures of gruesome killings perpetrated by the suspected Fulani herders, from as far back as 2004.

Earlier in 2004, the Oba's farm was destroyed by cattle taken there by herdsmen to graze.

Dosunmu, through his Otunba also said the crisis between farmers and herders began as far as back two decades ago.

He however lamented how it got worse as the years went by.

“There are Yoruba, Igbo, Hausa, Fulani and other tribes in Eggua and we live peacefully here because we are accommodating. I think that’s how it is in the entire country.

“But there is one chaos or the other whenever the Fulani herders move their cattle to our community.

“It has been a yearly affair, which always leads to tension in the community. What we experience here are killing of our people, raping of our wives and daughters and destruction of our farm crops.

“The saddening issue is that the Fulani settlers here that sell cows have apologised several times whenever those criminals attacked, but the problem has not been addressed.”

Another resident of the community, Mr Gbenga Popoola, narrated that their persistent cries to the police and the Nigerian government have yielded no positive result so the issues remain unresolved.

According to him, the atrocities of the murderous nomads have made them slip into penury.

“We have gone for many meetings with no results to show for them,” Popoola lamented.

“Their attacks have turned our land into poverty land because the farmers have run into debts as a result of these persistent attacks from the killer Fulani herdsmen.

“They have created fear among the people. Women cannot go to the streams alone except they are accompanied by men."

Popoola also talked about the petition written to Federal Anti-Special Robbery Squad in Abuja by suspected Fulani herders against farmers, saying the Ogun State Governor, Dapo Abiodun, has waded into the matter.

“Today, being the 8th of February, we should have been in Abuja now to answer for cases we do not know anything about. The Fulani petitioned SARS in Abuja that we farmers have been distributing weapons to cause unrest in the community.

“If not for the intervention of our governor, you would not be talking to us today because we would have been in Abuja answering questions.

“Governor Abiodun has raised a panel of inquiry to look into the matter, so I believe the police will act on the recommendations of the panel.

“Even our own Oba’s farm was destroyed sometime in 2004, and the former Alake of Egbaland had to commiserate with him,” Popoola added.

While talking about the efforts of the Oba Dosunmu and the entire community to quell the crisis before now, another resident and youth representative, Elijah Olukunle, said the villagers raised money to build a five-bedroomed flat police station in Eggua.

“Some years back, after a series of meetings and consultations, we were told that these killer Fulani herders would be curtailed if we have a divisional police headquarters in Eggua. We pooled resources together to build a five-bedroomed structure as a Divisional Police Headquarters but all to no avail.

“How many police officers are there? I’m not sure they are up to 10,” Olukunle said.

Olooru recently fled the community after the visit of a pan-Oduduwa Republic agitator, Sunday Adeyemo, popularly called Sunday Igboho, to the area.

Following his visit, the house of the Seriki Fulani and a Fulani settlement where cattle were sold, were burnt by some youths.

Members of the Ondo State Chapter of the National Association of Nigeria Nurses and Midwives (NANNM) have kicked against the refusal of the state government to pay their salary two months’ arrears.

In a report sent to SaharaReporters, the nurses alleged that the state government had paid only 50% of November salary to them in January while December and January salary arrears have yet to be paid.

File Photo: Ondo nurses protest non-payment of salaries on August 6, 2020

The nurses also alleged attempts by the Ondo State NANNM to cover up for the government as calls for strike action by members are not considered by the body.

They claim that the state chapters of the NANNM and Nigeria Labour Congress have been bribed, hence the association’s inability to yield to its members’ requests.

On Tuesday, members protested against the leadership of the union to either take action or resign.

The source, who spoke with SaharaReporters, said, "The nurses have mobilised a protest against Ondo State NANNM for keeping mute and in agreement with state government over two months’ unpaid salaries and 50 percent payment of November salary.

"They are also accusing their union of conniving with the government. The governor, Rotimi Akeredolu, has been owing for three months. He paid 50 percent of November salary in January ending and the National Association of Nigeria Nurses and Midwives (Ondo) has been avoiding members' request for a strike action against the inconsiderate action of the governor.

"Along with the labour union of the state, they have been bribed so they don't have the nerves to yield to members' concern. So, members are protesting against the leadership of the union today to either take action or resign membership."

A pro-Oduduwa Republic agitator, Sunday Adeyemo, popularly known as Sunday Igboho, has debunked claims that his bank accounts were frozen by the Nigerian government.

Igboho was reacting to reports in some quarters that he had appealed to the Nigerian government to unfreeze his accounts.

Sunday Igboho

The reports had also stated that Igboho rejected an award of recognition from the Yoruba Youth Socio-cultural Association (YYSA) due to the development.

But speaking with SaharaReporters on Tuesday, one of Igboho's aides said his principal never said his accounts were frozen

The aide, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said Igboho's accounts were not frozen.

He stressed the need for journalists to get the true situation story before publishing stories so as to avoid giving false reports.

The activist has continued to make the headlines since he issued a quit notice to Fulani herdsmen in the Ibarapa area of Oyo State.

Igboho recently said he never asked anyone to seek donations for his activities

This was after some of his supporters claimed they set up a Gofundme account for the purpose of raising £100,000 (N51.8 million) for him to buy buses.

The fundraiser, which was initiated by Maureen Badejo, a blogger and activist based in the United Kingdom, had garnered £35, 252 (N18.5 million) with over 1, 100 donations as of the time of filing this report.

Ibiyemi Olagoke, who donated £20, said, "Political correctness does not work anymore. Ethnic minorities spread across Nigeria have been terrorised, maimed, killed and completely emasculated by Sahelian Fulani terrorists.

"That effrontery to bring the war to the corridors of two of the largest tribes in Nigeria: the Igbos and the Yorubas is the last straw that has broken the camel's back. It is time for Yorubas to rise up and resist these killers, separate from that contraption, and in the process give hope to other suppressed and overrun groups in the British Evil Forest called Nigeria."

The Osinubis, who donated £250, wrote, "It’s time to break the jinx! These people have consistently wasted the enormous talents of our past leaders (Awolowo, MKO, et al). Now, they have the effrontery to kill, kidnap, rape and extort us on our ancestral land.

"Enough is enough! We must do whatever it takes to secure Oodua land and create prosperity for Oodua people. Ride on Sunday Igboho! God of justice is with you. True Oodua descendants are with you. Long live Oodua Nation!"

Another donor, Michael Fakinle, posted, "I have a belief that the atrocities committed by Fulani herdsmen are not accidental. The people in authority are not daft, they know what's going on yet they kept silent. It goes without saying that God will not come to stop them. We the people and personality like Chief Sunday Igboho will stop them in their tracks. God bless Oduduwa Nation," after donating £20.

Angry students of the Department of Medical Biochemistry of the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, Enugu State, have raised a petition to the Federal Ministry of Education, demanding the sacking of their lecturers.

SaharaReporters learnt that the students are angry over the perceived ineptitude of their lecturers which they blamed for the repeated mass failures of students of the school.

In the online petition, which has now had 301 signatories out of the target of 500, the students are calling for the overhaul of the department, noting that its “teaching and assessment styles are faulty”.

SaharaReporters gathered that the petition was raised by one Chiemeka Sidney, and titled, “Sack Lecturers of Medical Biochemistry of UNN for repeated mass failure of students.”

The petition reads, “For many years, the Department of Medical Biochemistry of the University of Nigeria keeps producing mass failures of students taking the course popularly known as ‘metab’.

“Many of the students, who fail or failed this course, even after studying very hard for it, did well in other courses. There is not a doubt that both the teaching and the assessment (examination) styles of this department are faulty.

“Rather than address this issue, the department seems to be enjoying the euphoria of this notorious mass failure. By this petition, we are demanding that these lecturers be held accountable for doing a poor job in teaching the students. This has been going on for years and it needs to stop.”

The Indigenous People of Biafra has accused the Nigerian government of planning to eliminate Biafran agitators in the country.

IPOB said the lives of its members are in danger and that the Department of State Services and other security agencies are monitoring their movements to kill or detain them.

This was contained in a statement made available to SaharaReporters on Monday by its media and publicity secretary, Emma Powerful.

In the press release titled, ‘Our Members’ Lives In Danger At Home – IPOB Seeks Foreign Protection,’ Powerful seeks the help of European countries to intervene and save IPOB members.

“We the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, under the command of our great leader, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, wish to put the whole world on notice that the lives of our members are in grave danger in Nigeria.

“Our members have been marked for elimination, and are being hunted by the Nigerian security agents.

“Some of our members who are lucky enough to escape to other countries escape untimely death while others who are not are being trailed for arrest and torture. Even those who fled the country are passing through trauma and emotional stress as they are being prevented from visiting home to attend the burial of their beloved ones.”

Speaking about the extent to which the DSS had gone to victimise its members, Powerful narrated the ordeal of an IPOB member, Obiageli Mboma, who allegedly escaped from the Nigerian Government by fleeing the country, but unable to attend her mother’s burial.

“Till today, operatives of the Department of State Services (DSS) and other security agencies in Nigeria are still trailing IPOB Media Supervisor in Rivers State, Madam Obiageli Vivian Mboma (aka Oby Mboma), who has fled Nigeria since 2016.

“This Biafran activist could not attend her mother's burial which was held recently for fear of arrest by the Nigeria security agents. Madam Oby's fate is common among thousands of other Biafran agitators who have today been made fugitives in their ancestral lands because the wicked security agencies in Nigeria have placed them on their wanted list.

“We commend European countries and other nations which provide refuge to many IPOB members and other Biafran agitators being hunted for elimination in Nigeria. The God of Heavens will not leave them unrewarded for this humanitarian gesture. When Biafra is fully restored, we shall certainly reciprocate this goodwill!”

IPOB called on advanced nations to lend support to its members by offering safe havens to them. It also berated the Nigerian government for hunting its members whereas it has not defeated terror groups inflicting pains on Nigerians.

“We, therefore, appeal to more countries of the world to please come to our rescue. Our members are facing serious persecution in Nigeria. Security agents keep trailing and hunting them.

“Some of them are languishing in various detention facilities across the country without trial. Instead of fighting terrorists, bandits, killer herdsmen, Boko Haram and ISWAP that are on the verge of taking over Nigeria, the Nigerian government is only busy hunting down peaceful Biafran agitators.

“Our members are in serious danger in Nigeria. We appeal for global assistance so that Nigerian government will not succeed in its evil agenda to decimate Biafra activists. We are peaceful people seeking the restoration of our beloved Biafran Republic.

“Our only crime to the Nigeria State is that we demand self-determination, which is our fundamental right.”

About 48 hours after Boko Haram/Islamic States West Province (ISWAP) terrorists repelled an attack by the military, killing at least 20 soldiers in Malari, Borno State, the Nigerian army has yet to officially speak on the incident.

SaharaReporters gathered that the soldiers were on patrol to clear some Boko Haram elements in the area following credible intelligence when they were ambushed by the insurgents.

Chief of Army Staff Major General Ibrahim Attahiru

A senior military officer said the gunmen subsequently engaged the troops with an overwhelming firepower, killing about 20 soldiers.

The terrorists also destroyed about three operational vehicles of the Nigerian army.

The attack comes few days after six soldiers were killed in an ambush along Goniri-Gorigi Road while returning from a clearance operation.

Authorities of the Nigeria army have however been silent on both incidents.

“They have contacted their families as usual, they will be buried in a cemetery here in Maiduguri during the week,” a source told SaharaReporters.

Boko Haram and its offshoot, Islamic State West Africa Province, have killed thousands and displaced millions in North-Eastern Nigeria.

Nigerian army has repeatedly claimed that the insurgency has been largely defeated and frequently underplays any losses.

In the past months, soldiers have been targeted by the insurgents, waiting in ambush for them.

The Boko Haram insurgency has caused over 30,000 deaths and displaced millions of individuals, mainly in Adamawa, Borno and Yobe states.

The terror group wants an Islamic caliphate in northern Nigeria.

Oyo State may experience food shortage in the coming seasons due to the activities of suspected Fulani herdsmen which have made many farmers abandon their farms for the fear of being killed or kidnapped, SaharaReporters has learnt.

The Chairman of All Farmers Association in Oyo State, Elder John Olateru, who spoke with SaharaReporters on the phone on Tuesday, described insecurity as a serious challenge confronting farmers in the South-West.

"We have started having food shortages already. It will be worse next season. The most unfortunate thing is that there are powers somewhere supporting these Fulani people. Our governors cannot speak the truth again because of their selfish interest and fear of the Federal Government.

"The Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi, was recently interviewed and he could not say the truth because of fear. We are in a serious situation," he said.

He noted that with the recent attacks on the people of Abuja, “government will now see it as a common problem".

Recently, farmers in the Ibarapa area of the state, which is predominantly an agrarian community contributing substantially to food supply, have cried out to the government to save them from Fulani herdsmen, saying they had taken over their farms.

Igangan town in Ibarapa is arguably the worst hit area in the state as cases of kidnapping, rape and killing have been high there.

A resident of Igangan and farmer, Mr. Kareem Olalekan, while narrating his experience to SaharaReporters, said he had stopped going to his farm since it was taken over by Fulani herdsmen.

He said, "The Fulani herdsmen are not allowing us to fully concentrate on our farming business and they are practising farming without any hindrance.

"We have reported them to law enforcement agents on countless occasions but instead of them to act accordingly, they will collect money from them and allow them to be moving freely. We do not want them in our town again, they should go their way and let us be.

"I have stopped going to farm since the herdsmen have invaded my farm. I envisage food shortage next season. We may have serious problems, not only in the South-West but in Nigeria as far as food is concerned."

Another farmer, Mr. Okanlawon Nurudeen, said, "Fulani herdsmen would invade our farms and rape our wives who are assisting us there. If they destroy the farm, the police after collecting bail money, would release the culprit. This is giving them a lot of confidence to do more harm."

While narrating his experience, a farmer based in Igbo-Ora in the Ibarapa Central Local Government Area of the state, Wasiu Salawu Agbaakin, shared a story of how his colleague was macheted by Fulani herdsmen.

He said, "A colleague of mine was severely macheted to the extent that the injury affected his rib cage. We took him to the Federal Medical Centre, Abeokuta, where he was rejected. We took him to the University College Hospital, Ibadan, he received treatment there for two weeks before we took him back to Igbo-Ora, where he was eventually treated."

He also narrated how some Fulani herdsmen attacked his farm where he cultivated rice, maize and cassava, a development which made him lose millions of naira. "I caught two cows right on my father's cashew farm that is about four acres. I held some of them there for two weeks before I released them to their owners with a warning that they must not allow them to enter the farm again," he said.
