The Vatican has punished two Polish bishops for negligence in combating sex abuse against minors within their dioceses, twin statements from the papal nuncio said on Monday.

Following investigations, Slawoj Leszek Glodz, Archbishop emeritus of the Gdansk Archdiocese, and Edward Janiak, former Bishop of Kalisz, have been ordered to live outside of their dioceses.

They were banned from participating in any public religious celebrations or lay gatherings.

Both will also need to pay an adequate amount to the St Joseph's foundation that supports sex abuse victims, the statements read.

The problem of sex abuse within the Polish Catholic church, including against minors, returned to the spotlight in recent years, following a series of TV documentaries and media reports on abuse and cover-up attempts.

Both punished bishops featured in such reports.

Glodz was also criticised for the alleged bullying of his subordinates during his tenure as archbishop and a glaringly lavish lifestyle.

According to information provided by the Polish Church, sexual abuse complaints were filed against 382 priests in Poland between 1990 and 2018, involving around 625 victims.

In the summer of 2019, Poland appointed a special state committee for investigating the abuse of minors aged 15 and younger.

The Kaneshie District Court has ordered the repatriation of a 28-year-old Nigerian for illegally obtaining a Ghanaian passport and birth certificate after paying various court fines.

Iyamu, aka Anthony Kwarteng, had secured a Ghanaian passport in Spain through a friend but the passport got missing when he visited Nigeria.

In his bid to secure a new Ghanaian Passport in Accra, the Ghana Immigration Service (GIS) officials arrested him when he appeared to go through processes at the Passport Application Centre (PAC) at Kwame Nkrumah Circle, Accra.

Iyamu pleaded guilty to illegal entry, attempting to obtain a Ghanaian passport and possession and use of a Ghanaian birth certificate.

The court presided over by Ama Adomako Kwakye convicted him on all three charges. On the charge of illegal entry, the court ordered Iyamu to pay a fine of ¢840 in default and serve two weeks imprisonment.

The court ordered him to pay ¢960 in default and serve two weeks imprisonment on the charge of attempting to obtain a Ghanaian passport. For possession and use of a false certificate to wit Ghanaian Birth Certificate, the court further ordered Iyamu to pay a GHC840.00 or, in default, serve two weeks imprisonment. The sentences, however, will run concurrently.

Narrating the facts of the case in Court, Chief Superintendent of GIS, Mr Adolf Asenso-Aboagye, said Iyamu submitted a Ghanaian passport application with a Ghana's birth certificate and a Ghanaian passport number GT2038555, which he claimed was missing.

Chief Supt. Asenso Aboagye said the convict also added a police report to the documents. Asenso-Aboagye said officials at the PAC doubted his nationality and referred the matter to the GIS for further investigations.

The prosecution said investigations at the GIS headquarters revealed that the convict was a Nigerian whose real name is Eugene Wisdom Iyamu and not Anthony Kwarteng, as he claimed.

According to the prosecution, Iyamu was born at Agbor in the Delta State and came to Ghana through an unapproved route at Ghana's Eastern Border (Aflao).

The prosecution said Iyamu, in his statement, said he obtained Ghana's passport and birth certificate while he was in Spain through a friend.

He said Iyamu had said that he managed to return to Nigeria on holidays, but his Ghanaian passport got missing, so he decided to procure a new Ghanaian passport.

The prosecution said Iyamu was then introduced to one Joe in Takoradi who charged him ¢2,000 for a Ghanaian passport, JoyFm of Ghana reports.

Presidential spokesman, Garba Shehu, has said President Muhammadu Buhari began his yearly medical trip to London even before he came into office as Nigeria's President in 2015.

Shehu said this on Tuesday while addressing reporters at the Nnamdi Azikwe International Airport's departure wing, Abuja, just after his principal departed the country for London for a medical check-up.

He said, "The President is looking at the window of opportunity that has opened with the Easter Holiday. It's a much relaxed period for everyone –Good Friday, Easter Monday, National Holidays. Then, he will use that period for his regular medical check-up.

"This is something he had done for so many years even before he came to office. Every year, he had appointments with his doctors, and he went there to do it. The only anomaly this time around is that COVID prevented this kind of thing from holding in 2020. So, he has lost some time. The last time he was there was one and half years back."

The President is expected to see a doctor during his stay in the UK and he is due to be back in the country in the second week of April. Buhari is embarking on the medical trip at a time when members of the Nigerian Association of Resident Doctors have declared their intention to commence a strike on April 1.

Garba also stated that it is unnecessary for President Muhammadu Buhari to transmit power to the Vice President, Professor Yemi Osinbajo. He said this when he featured as a guest on Channels Television's Politics Today.

He explained that President Buhari had not contravened the laws of the land by not transmitting power to Professor Osinbajo while away from the country for several days.

"He (Buhari) will continue from wherever he is," Shehu said when asked if the President had transferred duties to the vice president.

He added, "The law requires that if the President is going to be absent in the country for 21 days and more, then that transmission is warranted. In this particular instance, it is not warranted."

The management of Titi's Concept Hotel and Apartment has refuted claims that people died at the hotel on March 20.

There had been reports that over 20 persons lost their lives after eating fried meat served by an unidentified cyber fraudster at the hotel.

But in an interview with SaharaReporters on Tuesday, the management of the hotel dismissed the claim, stating that the hotel does not allow customers to bring food or any edible item into the premises.

The hotel manager, Otunba Damilare, told SaharaReporters that some internet fraudsters must have concocted such stories to tarnish the image of the organisation.

According to him, a group of ‘Yahoo Boys' assaulted a security guard at the hotel and was charged to court by the management who sought justice for the assaulted staff member.

He said the management learnt the young men promised to deal with the hotel for its refusal to withdraw the case from court.

He said, “The incident purported to have happened at our company is not true. No one shared meat at our hotel, we don't allow that, no one brings in beef or drink or anything.

"Probably they went into the car outside the hotel to take the meat they said the Yahoo boy shared, we don't have an idea. We just saw on social media that people have started talking about our company negatively.

"Titi's concept does not know anything about the incident, anyone can come to the place for fun, it's a bar. And we have not seen anyone come forward to claim that their kids or relatives died after eating at our place.

“At first, they said the affected persons are about 25, some said 50. If someone dies, why was there no video or picture evidence of this? They are humans, not ants. We suspect that the story is meant to destroy our image.

“Usually, Yahoo boys come around to lodge, have fun and all but that some came with beef and shared to people, is not true. It is a false allegation.

“The truth is, some Yahoo guys beat up the security guard of the hotel, they hit him with a ‘charmed’ ring, and the owner of the hotel reported at the police station, they were charged to court as it is ideal to do. Those guys have begged that the case be withdrawn from the court but the management said N3 million has been spent on the case, that withdrawal is impossible. Since the case is not in their favour, they gathered together to see how they can tarnish our image. One of them came to inform us.

“They decided to lie that some people ate at Titi's Concept and died. They didn't want to make a direct allegation so they decided to make it indirect by alleging that someone served them meat so people can point to our company in a bad light. There is no way over 25 people will die and there will be no evidence.

“If the allegations were true, it would have been shut. As of last Sunday, we had customers. As I'm speaking now, some people are still lodging in the hotel. Those guys are liars, they still owe us N500, 000.” See Also CRIME Over 20 Dead After Eating ‘Fried Meat’ Served By Yahoo Boy At A Bar In Ogun

A statement released by the management read, “It has come to the attention of our management at Titi's Concept Hotel and Apartment that a bike rumour has been circulating some sections of the social media blogs with a claim that about 50 persons are now feared dead after attending the birthday party of a ‘Yahoo boy’ in a hotel in Akute Alagbole, Ogun State.

“Our management noticed that the picture of our famous hotel, which is the unparalleled choice of many trendy personalities in town, was viciously attached with some of the reports and is now being lifted by many notable blogs for unverified reproduction on their platforms.

“We have since launched an investigation into the purported event but consistently found it to be untrue, unfounded, fabricated and lacking in any substance. Detractors are kindly advised to desist from creating falsehoods that are aimed at creating a negative image for the unbeatably noble and responsible hotel.

“Anyone with proof in respect of the purported event is hereby encouraged to produce the identity of the 'Yahoo Boy' and also of the deceased participants for verifiable checks. They are also advised to approach law enforcement agents with such proofs."

The Christian Association of Nigeria has said the criticism by the Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs, about the outcry over the alleged plots to Islamise the judiciary is “laughable”.

According to a Vanguard report on Tuesday, the Vice Chairman of CAN for the Northern region, John Hayab, bashed the NSCIA and told the Muslim body to stop talking and face the realities on the ground.

SaharaReporters had earlier reported how the Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs accused the leadership of CAN of exhibiting hatred for Islam and destructive propaganda against the religion.

This came amid allegations by CAN over the shortlisting of 20 Justices-designate by the Federal Judicial Service Commission.

In a statement on Monday, the group said Muslims also suffer the same marginalisation CAN said Christians suffer from.

But responding to the claims by the Islamic body, Hayab said, “This (criticism) is laughable and a serious display of ignorance from the representatives of NSCIA. They said so many things without sparing a thought for the realities on the ground. The Muslim body also spoke as if its leaders do not have any good knowledge of Nigeria.

“However, we believe they simply want to continue in their mischief and misleading of gullible followers.

“Nigerian Christians are yearning to see the day a true census of people, workers and every group will be done in this country; at least some lies will be put to rest.”
