An officer of the Department of State Services in Plateau State, Barrister Muktar Modibbo, has died after armed gunmen in a gunrunning ring opened fire on him and other officers during an operation.
A top security source within the DSS told SaharaReporters on Thursday that the incident occurred during a raid on the criminals' hideout in Shendam Local Government Area of the state.
The gunrunners, who supply illicit weapons to sinister groups that perpetuate violence within the state, were initially traced to Qu’anpan Local Government Area by the secret police but the operation was aborted after it was discovered that intel had leaked to the gunrunners, who then swiftly changed location.
The security source said after receiving new intelligence that the arms smugglers were in Shendam, a team was constituted to burst their operation.
The operation was, however, met with heavy shooting from the criminals, who were well equipped with sophisticated firearms and seemed to have had prior intel about the raid.

For more than a century, foreign direct investment (FDI) in Africa was almost exclusively focused on the extraction and export of natural resources. But since the turn of the millennium, the momentum has shifted. In the past few years, the trend has finally flipped. Global investors now come to Africa for the promise of its people than for its physical properties. Petroleum and mining now count for a minority of long-term capital inflows, with more investors focused on technology, telecommunications, retailing and services. The extractive industries have accounted for more than half of FDI just once in the past seven years. Africa’s labour force is projected to be nearly 40 percent larger by 2030. Africa’s infrastructure financing needs are estimated to be $130–$170bn a year (EY, 2020).
“We are proud of our partnership with VOTAC. The African diaspora is going to play a critical role in Africa’s civil and economic transformation. Already, Nigeria’s diaspora remittances are the nation’s second largest source of foreign exchange. In addition to their resources, the diaspora brings their energy, experience, and networks, which combined with the local know how of domestic institutions is certain to create value on the continent. We already see these positive synergies in our partnership with VOTAC and its proprietor, Abraham Tuyo.” – Dapo Olorunyomi, Publisher, Premium Times

Troops of the Nigerian Army are furious at the authorities for not recognising other soldiers killed alongside Dahiru Bako, a colonel and Commander of the Brigade.

The senior military officer lost his life on Monday in an ambush set up by the insurgents, according to a report by HumAngle.
Three other soldiers killed alongside Bako were not recognized nor given any respect or befitting burial.
The identities of the three fallen soldiers are Lance Corporal Oluwaseyi, Lance Corporal Nwobuji Desmond and Private Aliyu Ibrahim.

Agboola Ajayi, deputy governor of Ondo State, has challenged Governor Rotimi Akeredolu's son, Babajide, to make good his threat to sue him to court for claiming that the young man collected over N400m N4.3bn found in a secret account of the state government.
Babajide had on his Twitter handle threatened to sue Ajayi over the allegation.
Ajayi, who challenged the governor's son to take him to court, in a statement by his Media Adviser, Mr Allen Sowore, on Thursday in Akure, said he stood by his words Babajide benefitted from the fund under the guise of consultancy fee.
He said, "The office of the deputy governor hereby challenges Babajide Akeredolu to immediately carry out his threat. It is in the interest of Ondo State that the threat becomes a reality because it will provide everyone an ample opportunity to resolve once and for all, the whereabouts of the recovered but now missing N4.3bn Ondo State money.
"Not only that, the whereabouts of the 40% of the 13% oil derivation accruing to the Ondo State Oil Producing Areas Development Commission (OSOPADEC) since 2017 would have to be accounted for.
"In the same vein, the account of the money raised for COVID-19 funds should also be made available for auditing.
"The deputy governor, Agboola Ajayi, is also using this opportunity to call for the forensic audit of the Ondo State Internally Generated Revenue and REMTA payment system and the unveiling of the consultants collecting the 10 per cent of generated revenues; a percentage which is just too high for the services being rendered.
"The deputy governor stands by his statement that the payment of N430m as 10 percent of the recovered N4.3bn as consultancy fee to the firm of Babajide, the governor's son, for doing nothing is unjustifiable.
"We, therefore, urge Governor Oluwarotimi Akeredolu to allow the state House of Assembly complete the probe of the N4.3bn kept for 10 years in a Zenith Bank account. Also, the government officials responsible for this mendacity should be revealed and punished accordingly."
As part of measures to ensure a violence-free October 10 governorship election in Ondo State, the Independent National Electoral Commission has said that candidates of all the political parties participating in the exercise would sign a peace agreement.
Prof Mahmood Yakubu, INEC National Chairman, stated this on Thursday at an interactive session with journalists in Akure, Info State capital, in preparation for the governorship election.
He observed that cases of violence and clashes between supporters of political parties in the state were becoming worrisome to stakeholders.
He explained that the commission would be meeting with security agencies and traditional rulers in the state with the view to stemming the crisis.
Yakubu said, "We are aware of some violence in the state as regards this election but we are meeting security agencies and traditional rulers to appeal to participating candidates and party leaders.
"Former President Abdulsalami Abubakar and other members of Peace Accord Commission would arrive Akure on October 6, 2020 to sign peace accord with all candidates to ensure a violence-free exercise."
While giving assurances that INEC would
remain neutral in the conduct of the election, Yakubu said the commission would work on lapses observed in the just concluded Edo State election with a view to improving on the overall outcome.
He added that INEC had overcome the initial challenge created by the fire outbreak that razed over 5000 smart card readers in the commission's Akure office.

Two years after its domestication, the Administration of Criminal Justice Law has yet to be effectively implemented in Adamawa State.
As a result, the British Council and Nigerian Barr Association are pushing for its implementation with a view to enhancing speedy administration of justice.
Among the celebrated innovations in the law are timelines set for the dispensation of justice, protection of the rights of suspects, prohibition of arresting relations in lieu of suspects and non-custodial sentences.
Under the non-custodial sentencing, a convicted person is commuted to community service instead of serving jail term at a correctional service facility.
It has also made provisions for probation and parole.
The law also now gives women the right to stand as sureties to secure the bail of a detained person.
There is also a provision for professional bondsmen to carter for the needs of persons detained, who may not have a surety within reach.
At a sensitisation on Thursday in Yola, the Adamawa state capital, civil society groups were tasked to step down the campaign for the implementation of the law.
NBA Chairman in the state, Jibril Ibrahim Jimeta, stressed the need for the institutions of the criminal justice system to apply the law so as to end arbitrariness.

The Niger Delta Development Commission has sent a delegate to the United Kingdom to verify the academic status of scholars, who benefitted from its scholarship programme.
The visit is also to ascertain the number of beneficiary of its scholarship scheme studying in the country.
The NDDC had failed to pay students, who benefitted from its scholarship scheme since 2018.
File Photo: NDDC scholars protesting at the Nigerian Embassy in London
This formed part of the financial scandal that has enveloped the commission including the mismanagement of COVID-19 funds and fraudulent payment of training for some of its officials.
The Executive Director, Projects of the NDDC, Cairo Ojougboh, in a tweet via his personal handle said he led a delegate to some tertiary institutions including Coventry University.
He said, “As part of our assignment, I led the NDDC team to embark on a verification, monitoring and evaluation process in Coventry University, United kingdom. The team included Mrs Idara Akpabio (NDDC) and Godson Ideozu (Managing Director MARG Education International Limited)
“I met with representatives of Coventry University: Mr Amit Bhatnagar (Sponsored students Manager) and Laura Minoz Delgado (Regional Manager Africa) at their Coventry Campus.
“I articulated the reasons for our visit to the Coventry team which were to predominantly verify the number of scholars we have in their institution and to also examine the performance of our scholars, particularly in the midst of the current pandemic. In addition, I pledged the readiness of NDDC to pay all outstanding fees once the verification process is over and thanked Coventry University for their understanding.”
He revealed that Coventry University team verified that there were NDDC scholars studying in the institution.
“NDDC scholars are regarded as 'VIP' (Gold tagged) scholars, attesting also to the fact that every form of assistance is rendered to NDDC scholars once they arrive.
“Following this, the team provided the list of scholars we have studying in their institution,” he added.
Following series of protests by the scholars, a presidential directive was issued on August 4 for the NDDC to pay the scholars.
While the commission effected the payment, scholars of the 2018 set were omitted from the payment.
Ojougboh initially said the commission wanted to verify the status of the students but backtracked, saying it has fully paid its scholars and described scholars of the 2018 set as hirelings and impostors.
However, after a recent protest by the students, Ojougbo said the NDDC will fly to the UK to visits the schools and ascertain the academic status of its scholars.
The 2018 foreign scholars have been plagued by hardship caused by the refusal of the NDDC to make payments as at when due.
Two of the students had their studentship in the Universities of Coventry and Leeds revoked last year because the NDDC failed to pay their registration fees.
Many of them were logged out of their school portals.
They told SaharaReporters that they were unsure of where meals would come from.
They also said their academic transcripts have been seized due to the non-payment of their tuition.

Residents of Obawole in the Ifako-Ijaiye, Ogba area of Lagos and environs were thrown into confusion on Thursday afternoon following a gas explosion in the community.
An eyewitness said the explosion was from a gas plant located in the area.
It was gathered that several houses were shaken by the explosion which left many people injured.
Scene of the incident.
Head of the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency, Femi Oke-Osanyintolu, confirmed the incident
He said efforts were being made to put out the resulting fire from the explosion.
“The agency has activated its response plan to the fire incident at Cele Bustop, Ifako-Ijaiye LGA, and will provide further updates. Lagosians are urged to kindly exercise calm,” he said.
Four staff of Signatious Hotel, Warri, Delta State, who were reportedly stripped naked by owner of the hotel and former Minister of State for Education, Kenneth Gbagi, have threatened legal action against him.
They also demanded N1bn compensation and public apology from the former minister.
The victims’ legal team led by Kunle Edun of Tri-Lex Partners law firm, made the demands, among others in a letter sent to Gbagi on Wednesday.
Kenneth Gbagi
They gave the former minister a five-day ultimatum to meet all their demands or face legal action.
SaharaReporters had reported how Precious Achibong, Victor Ephraim, Gloria Oguzie, and Roselyn Okiemute, were stripped naked and detained at the Ebrumede Police Station for allegedly stealing N5,000 belonging to the governorship aspirant of the Peoples Democratic Party.
"That after the guest’s stay, he gave our clients the sum of N105, 000.00 (One Hundred and Five Thousand Naira) as tips for the good time that he had at the hotel. This again, is not unusual in the hospitality business. That the hotel did not lose any money neither was any alleged to have been stolen. That when you got wind of what happened (most likely you refused to believe that there are still honest Nigerians) you summoned our clients to your office immediately and subjected them to tortuous interrogations (in the presence of your armed mobile policemen) where you demanded that all the tips given to our clients must be returned to you.
"You told our clients menacingly that they are not entitled to tips, as all tips belong to you. As a matter of fact, you categorically stated that they were not supposed to have monies in their accounts as long as they were working for you. This is not surprising, because according to our clients, you hardly paid staff salaries regularly and at times the staff worked without pay for months.
"That on Thursday, the 17th of September, 2020 you forcibly took our clients to the hotel warehouse and later to your office (also at the hotel’s restaurant) in the presence and active assistance of the armed mobile policemen (paid by tax payers) and at gunpoint ordered our clients to pull off their clothes.
"That you were still not done. You summoned the other staff of the hotel to see the nakedness of our clients. They were shocked at what you and your son were doing but still had to look at the shameful sight because they were afraid of you. They also joined in taking snapshots. You took every pride and dignity that our clients had away from them and according to you, that is the way thieves should be treated. You became the accuser, the judge and executioner.
"That the case of the married woman is even more pathetic. She was assigned to the food and beverage department. You alleged that there was a shortage of N1,000.00 in her sales for the 18th of September, 2020 and demanded that she returned the money, notwithstanding the fact that she was not the staff directly responsible. But as the Supervisor she promised to return the N1, 000.00.
"That at gunpoint, you forcibly collected their ATM cards and used the hotel’s Point On Sale device to transfer all the monies in our clients’ bank accounts. You withdrew the sum of N111, 000.00 from the account of Victor Ephraim on Friday, the 18th of September, 2020. Same time also you unlawfully withdrew the sum of N176, 500.00 (One Hundred and Seventy Six Thousand Five Hundred Naira) from the account of Gloria Oguzie.
“You withdrew the sum of N5, 000.00 (Five Thousand Naira) from Okiemute Roseline Diaghwarhe which you claimed was what she “stole” from you. Precious Achibong had already under duress, refunded the sum of N2, 000.00 even though the alleged shortage from her daily sale was N1,000.00 but you still subjected her to this infamous show of bestiality.”
Residents of Obawole area of Ogba and environs in Lagos were thrown into confusion on Thursday afternoon following an explosion that rocked the community.
It was gathered that several houses were shaken by the explosion, which damaged vehicles parked on some streets.
The cause of the explosion is yet to be ascertained.
