The People's Alternative Political Movement (PAPM) has urged lawyers in each state of the federation to defend protesters who may be arrested on June 12, 2021.
The June 12 Democracy Day nationwide protest is presently gathering momentum as Nigerians from various walks of life have expressed support to mobilise others to the streets to seek an end to bad governance in the country.
Forces behind the new movement (PAPM) are drawn from trade unions, civil society, students, farmers and peasants from across the 36 states.
The promoters said the new movement will take Nigeria from dishonest, corrupt and reactionary politicians currently taking Nigeria to arguably its worst period in history, with inflation and unemployment at unprecedented levels.
June 12 Protest has been trending major social media platforms with many organisations, groups and human rights activists calling on Nigerians to join the mass movement in the country.
The President Muhammadu Buhari-led regime has a penchant for arresting and torturing peaceful protesters, denying them of their rights.
According to various publicity posters, the June 12 Protest will make 14 critical demands which are: abolish 1999 constitution, end terrorism, end banditry, Isa Pantami must go (Minister of Communications and Digital Economy whose past comments exposed as a sympathiser for terrorists), free all detained activists, end insecurity, justice for all EndSARS victims, Free Kogi2 (Two anti-President Muhammadu Buhari protesters – Larry Emmanuel and Victor Anene Udoka – who are being Illegally detained in Kogi State), Buhari Must Go, revert electricity tariffs, end ASUP (Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics) strike, revert fuel price, revert party deregistration, and free Nicholas Mbah.
Human rights activist, Omoyele Sowore, still recuperating after being shot by a trigger-happy policewoman during a peaceful protest at the Unity Fountain in Abuja last week, also lent his voice on Twitter to the June 12 protests.
“Good morning, oppressed citizens! We urge you to please join us nationwide/worldwide to engage in massive street action on June 12, 2021. #June12Protest #BuhariMustGo #Revolutionnow,” he said on Tuesday.
“The Nigerian State has declared war against her citizens and we must rise in millions with every resistance available. #June12Protest is an historical duty to save what is left of this country,” another Nigerian said.
With the recent ban of Twitter by the Nigerian government, it is expected that many more youths would feel motivated to join the protest to demand respect for the rights of Nigerians to air their views.
Nigeria’s June 12 Democracy Day is a public holiday set aside to commemorate the restoration of democracy in the country.
May 29 was initially the democracy day in Nigeria, until it was changed in 2018 by the Federal Government.
This is special in Nigeria’s history and is used to commemorate the democratic election of Chief MKO Abiola on June 12, 1993, in what has been adjudged to be Nigeria's freest and fairest elections.
It was, however, cancelled by the Ibrahim Babangida military junta, and Abiola was thrown into prison, leading ultimately to his untimely death in 1998.
Swiss officials have dropped a case involving Alex Saab, a close ally of the regime of Venezuelan leader, Nicolás Maduro.
According to Gotham City, an investigative news website sourcing information through a judicial watch, Geneva’s prosecutor confirmed that they had dropped the three-year-long probe over insufficient evidence to prove their case.
Alex Saab and his partner, Álvaro Publico Vargas were being investigated for suspected money laundering via Swiss offshore accounts. The investigation started in 2018.
The Venezuelan businessman is currently fighting extradition to the US from Cape Verde where he has been in custody for about nine months in what appears to be a complex diplomatic row involving the two countries and Venezuela.
Gotham City said its investigations revealed that Saab is connected to 22 accounts at UBS, although a spokesman for the Swiss wealth manager said it couldn’t comment on the issue.
It is alleged that some of the proceeds from the supposed fraudulent deal went through Swiss accounts.
The Swiss investigations commenced after some banks reportedly lodged complaints to authorities about suspicious funds.
The decision by the Swiss prosecutors could have some impact on the US case as it also relies on claims of transfer of the fraudulent proceeds through Swiss accounts.
The prosecutors reportedly assessed information from UBS which showed fund movements between accounts at banks in Switzerland only and concluded that at the material moment, it had no evidence to further investigate the charge of money laundering hence the need to discontinue criminal proceedings.
While all this is ongoing, Mr. Saab remains under house arrest in Cape Verde although the ECOWAS court on March 15, 2021 in a ruling ordered his release.
The court ordered Cape Verde to stop all extradition processes against him and also compensate him with $200,000.
The ruling was primarily on the basis contrary to claims, Cape Verde Interpol did not issue any red notice for Mr. Saab’s arrest on the day he was arrested.
The Supreme Court in Cape Verde, a day after that ruling also delivered a counter-ruling approving the extradition of Mr. Saab.
Lawyers for Mr. Saab have indicated that they will appeal the decision but have taken various actions including writing to the ECOWAS court to get the ECOWAS community to sanction Cape Verde over its decision not to comply with the ruling.
International Legal News AddThis : Original Author : SaharaReporters, New York Disable advertisements :The Onion Producers and Marketers Association of Nigeria, OPMAN, said it's members have lost N4.5 billion to various crises in southern Nigeria.
OPMAN has therefore vowed to cut off supply of the commodity to southern Nigeria from Monday, June 7, 2021.
The group said it would halt the move if authorities meet the association’s demands.
The association addressed journalists in Sokoto on Saturday, saying it's members have lost onions and property worth N4.5 billion in various crises in southern Nigeria.
President of OPMAN, Aliyu Isa, said members of the association who suffered losses due to ethno-religous crises must be compensated, identifying it as one of their demands.
"Our members have lost onions and property worth N4.5 billion in various crises in the South," he said.
He said, "During the Aba crisis in Abia State, the association lost three members, while about 30 trailers, 9 utility cars, 50 stores and 10,000 bags of onion, among other valuables belonging to our members, were destroyed.
"In Shasa, Oyo State, he said 27 lives, five trailers, 5,600 bag of Onions, 12 utility vehicles and other valuables were lost.
"Our members were robbed of onions worth N13 million in Imo State recently.
"After full deliberation by the executive members of this association and the failure of government to respond to our cry, we resolved that we are shutting down the supply of onions to the entire South by Monday, June 7, 2021, unless all our demands are met."
Trade News AddThis : Original Author : SaharaReporters, New York Disable advertisements :The Attorney General of Cape Verde, José Landim has described the extradition process of Venezuelan diplomat, Alex Saab as politically motivated.
The Attorney General also admitted that Cape Verde may face consequences for defying the ECOWAS court ruling.
Ambassador Alex Saab
According to Platform Times, the Attorney General, whose office is responsible for executing the decision of the Government of Cape Verde to extradite Alex Saab to the United States, was among the country’s political office holders initially fronting the legal case against Saab.
In a document published by Premium Times in January 2021, Mr Landim had registered that the country is not in agreement with the body on the supplementary protocol on the ECOWAS court that empowers the code to entertain human right ramifications.
But, Landim in a latest comment back-tracked, as he highlighted possible political consequences for Cape Verde.
“From the beginning, we have always said that we apply the laws of Cape Verde and the Constitution of the Republic, and not laws that one wants to impose from outside. We apply what we understand to be the applicable law.
“Other consequences will be political, perhaps, but it is no longer up to me to answer that question. If there are other consequences, I’m sure the state will know how to react because I believe we are acting well,” Landim told journalists after a meeting with the President of the Republic.
However, José Manuel Pinto Monteiro, the leading Cape Verdean lawyer for Alex Saab, rebuffed the Attorney General’s statements, interpreting them as an unequivocal acknowledgment that the extradition process of Alex Saab to the United States is based exclusively on political assumptions.
“The observations of the PGR, today, are clear and unequivocal proof of the political nature of Cape Verde’s intervention in this matter”, so the lawyer reacted when asked to read Mr Landim’s statements, adding that “the fact is that the Alex Saab’s detention was, from the beginning, a political decision, and it is a political decision that must be taken to free him”.
“It was the executive [Government] and not the courts that decided to arrest [Alex Saab], it was the executive and not the courts that delayed the release on June 25, 2020, when INTERPOL cancelled the Red Alert for its American friends could issue (sic) the extradition request, and it is the executive, as the Supreme Court of Justice itself indicated, that must decide the final fate of Alex Saab.”
The lawyer also tells the PGR that, “if you intend to preserve Cape Verde’s good name, this is your opportunity to confess that you were wrong and to do the right thing.”
It could be recalled that the Court of Justice of the Economic Community of West African States (ECCJ) ruling on Alex Saab’s case, on 15 March, said the arrest of the diplomat was illegal, having been carried out without an appropriate Interpol Red Notice or arrest warrant.
It ordered Cape Verde to immediately release Saab, terminate extradition processes, and pay him $200,000 by way of compensation.
Aside from the ECOWAS judgement, the Geneva prosecutor’s office has also dropped the money laundering charges initially levelled against him.
Legal News AddThis : Original Author : SaharaReporters, New York Disable advertisements :Claim: A photo making the rounds on social media showed a tweet that purportedly originated from the verified handle of Twitter, explaining reasons for the deletion of President Muhammadu Buhari’s tweet and claiming Twitter does not recognise Buhari.
Verdict: Findings show the picture being circulated was created using basic photo manipulation tools, it is false and had not come from @Twitter.
Full story
On June 1, 2021, Nigeria's President, Muhammadu Buhari received a briefing from the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Mahmood Yakubu at the State House in Abuja.
Yakubu had come to brief the president on a series of attacks on facilities of the electoral body across the country.
In reaction, President Buhari said he would provide INEC with all it needs to carry out its duties and prepare ahead of the 2023 elections.
In a Twitter thread after the briefing, the President, however, warned that 'a rude shock' awaits unpatriotic elements promoting insurrection and burning of critical assets across the country.
The president threatened to treat insurrectionists and those attacking facilities of INEC like Nigerian soldiers treated the rebels during the civil war.
Buhari, a retired general fought during the war which claimed the lives of over 3 million persons.
The last part of the thread attracted the outrage of many Nigerians who interpreted it to be a threat to a particular ethnic group.
The tweet reads, “Many of those misbehaving today are too young to be aware of the destruction and loss of lives that occurred during the Nigerian Civil War. Those of us in the fields for 30 months, who went through the war, will treat them in the language they understand.”
Many Nigerians reported the Twitter account of the President, asking that his account should be banned; however, Twitter deleted the controversial post by the President, rather than ban his account.
A comment by Twitter stated, “This Tweet violated the Twitter Rules”.
This action by the social media giant did not go down well with some government officials, especially the Minister of Information and Culture, Lai Mohammed, who condemned Twitter's action in a press conference.
A photo, which has now gone viral on social media, especially the popular messaging app, WhatsApp featured Twitter's verified handle explaining the rules President Buhari had contravened which caused the deletion of the tweet.
The tweet which purportedly came from Twitter read, “Dear @MBuhari We have no idea who you are or what country you are leading, we have come across a tweet that violates our rule number 4 of “safety and freedom" and removed it.”
VERIFICATION
Dubawa, an indigenous independent verification and fact-checking project, started by checking the official handle of Twitter (@Twitter) to see if it posted any tweet such as this, but found nothing of such.
From searches made, @Twitter's last tweet was on May 28 while the circulating tweet was dated June 4, 2021.
Also, the purported tweet was posted with Twitter for Android but checks from Dubawa has revealed that @Twitter uses Sprinklr or Twitter Web App to make posts.
Also, Twitter had not independently made any comment on its verified handle regarding the deletion of the President's tweet on its verified handle ever since the incident.
Further checks by Dubawa showed that President Muhammadu Buhari is officially recognised as Nigeria's President as stated on his bio in the verified handle. As of Sunday, the President's account is active with 4.1 million followers.
Dubawa further made use of Forensically, a tool for digital image forensics, which confirmed that the picture had been created by some photo manipulation tricks.
Conclusion
Findings showed that the picture being circulated as a tweet from the verified handle of Twitter is false. The picture was manipulated.
The researcher produced this fact-check per the Dubawa 2021 Kwame KariKari Fellowship partnership with SaharaReporters to facilitate the ethos of “truth” in journalism and enhance media literacy in the country.

On Saturday morning between 11 am and 12 pm, as Nigerians woke up to the reality of a Twitter ban, and downloading Virtual Private Networks (VPNs) to access Twitter, the Nigerian government, through the office of the Presidency, reached out to the Cyberspace Administration of China (CAC) to discuss plans to build an internet firewall, FIJ reports.
The government officials present at the meeting include Ibrahim Gambari, the Chief of Staff to the President, and Lai Mohammed, Minister of Information and Culture.
The internet firewall is a way of having a separate network for the Nigerian Internet that will give the government control over social media platforms such as Twitter and Facebook.
This is similar to the internet filtering system China operates, called the Great Firewall.
Cost Of Twitter Ban
Meanwhile, SaharaReporters learnt that Nigeria loses over N2 billion to Twitter shutdown in the country on a daily basis.
This was disclosed by NetBlocks, which put the total cost impact of the shutdown at $6, 014, 390 and it naira equivalent at N2, 177, 089,051. See Also Free Speech Nigeria Dying, Loses Over N2billion Daily To Twitter Ban Amid Massive Unemployment, Economic Downturn 0 Comments 7 Hours Ago
The NetBlocks Cost of Shutdown Tool (Cost) estimates the economic impact of an Internet disruption, mobile data blackout or app restriction using indicators from the World Bank, ITU, Eurostat and US. Census.
Meanwhile, the estimate is for one day, meaning the country has lost over N4 billion since the ban on Friday.
Nigeria's unemployment rate increased to the second highest on a global list of countries monitored by Bloomberg recently.
The jobless rate in Nigeria rose to 33.3% in the three months through December, according to a report published by the National Bureau of Statistics on March 15.
It went up from 27.1% in the second quarter of 2020.
Experts have noted that a good number of Nigeria's youth population earn their livelihood through Twitter and that such incomes will be affected by ban. will be lost no thanks to the ban. According to CFR, “the Great Firewall, is the centre of the government’s online censorship and surveillance effort. Its methods include bandwidth throttling, keyword filtering, and blocking access to certain websites.”
The Reporters Without Borders states that the firewall makes large-scale use of Deep Packet Inspection technology, an advanced method of examining and managing network traffic. The Nigerian government seeks to establish the Nigerian Internet, which it will also control likewise.
A digital security expert told the newspaper that China is the only country that deploys total Deep Packet Inspection over its cyberspace. The technology involves making use of lots of manpower.
The internet firewall will also give the Nigerian government power to block VPN, which many Nigerians are using to access Twitter. The CAC is the central internet regulator, censor, oversight and control agency for China and answers to the Central Cyberspace Affairs Commission, headed by Xi Jinping, China’s President.
Since its existence, the CAC, which also gives approval to data by Chinese companies outside of China, regulates usernames on the Chinese Internet, licences news information services, and bans comments that “harm national security” or “harm the nations honour interest”.
Wall Street Journal reported that People.cn, the online arm of the Communist Party’s People’s Daily newspaper, offers content moderation as a service. The chairman of People.cn predicted that censorship in China will grow to a $70 billion industry.
The Nigerian government has in the past few years sought a way to control freedom of expression online. Towards the end of 2015, the Frivolous Petition Bill targeting online and print media as well as regulating social media posts was introduced into the Senate just 10 months after Buhari’s ascent to power.
In 2019, lawmakers introduced two bills: the National Commission for the Prohibition of Hate Speech bill and the Protection from Internet Falsehood and Manipulation and other Related Offences bill, prompting public outcry that meant they were not passed into law.
This was however not the only effort the Nigerian government made in controlling online speech and spying on its citizens. In November 2017, 21 pro-Biafra websites were taken down on the orders of the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC). FIJ learnt that the government had explored using Open Source Intelligence (OSINT) between 2018 and 2019 to track down Biafra agitators and supporters, as well as government critics on social media. Intelligence agencies make use of OSINT to track people or events. The Nigerian government had reached out to Bellingcat investigators, a British investigative journalism website that specialises in OSINT, but they declined to work with the Nigerian government.
FIJ learnt that Bellingcat was approached to give OSINT training to the Nigerian intelligence community to develop local capacity for Open Source Investigation.
The Nigerian government had sold the angle of national security and fighting terrorism to Bellingcat, but that wasn’t at the top of the government’s priority. Bellingcat later discovered that the purpose of the training was to hunt down civilians and those who spoke negatively against the government, and not Boko Haram terrorists as claimed by the Nigerian government. The terrorists, in this case, were pro-Biafra supporters. Bellingcat has been reported to say what the US intelligence can’t, which includes exposing Russian activities.
“The government needed a legal framework through which it could carry out its actions,” he said.
“That legal framework would serve as a justification for their actions. Mostly, the rhetoric the government uses, including Friday’s suspension of Twitter, was around Nigeria’s unity and national security,” FIJ quoted a source as saying.
A 2020 report titled Running in Circles Uncovering the Clients of Cyberespionage Firm Circles by The Citizen Lab of the University of Toronto showed that Nigeria’s Defence Intelligence Agency had recruited the services of Circles in 2015 and 2017 to spy on its citizens and track down government critics.
Nigeria’s surveillance capabilities rank high on the continent. In 2018, the Office of the National Security Adviser (ONSA) was allocated $12.8 million for Stranvisky Project 2. Other budget allocations intended to increase the surveillance capabilities of both the ONSA and the Department of State Services (DSS) included a ‘Social Media Mining Suite’, ‘Wolverme Next Generation SDRIMSI’, ‘Surveillance Drone’ and ‘Mobile Surveillance Facilities’.
Freedom House, a US-based advocacy group, revealed that the surveillance projects such as Stranvisky Project 2 still received allocation in the 2019 and 2020 budget proposals.
The Citizen Lab, meanwhile, reported that Circles, a surveillance firm, exploits weaknesses in the global mobile phone system to snoop on calls, texts, and the location of phones around the globe. Circles relies on inside sources and open sources intelligence and customers can purchase a system that they connect to local telecommunications companies.
Circles merged with NSO Group in 2014, an Israeli surveillance company that sells surveillance equipment.
A 2016 investigation showed that in 2010, Rotimi Amaechi, the former Governor of Rivers State, was the first government official to make contact with Circles to deliver internet surveillance equipment. Though the deal fell through, it highlighted the direction Nigeria was going.
Internet shutdown has become a tool that African leaders are more inclined to exercise during protests and elections. In 2017 in Cameroon, for example, the Anglophone regions had internet shutdown for over three months, and it was only restored on the orders of their sit-tight President, Paul Biya.

News TRIBUTE AddThis : Original Author : SaharaReporters, New York Disable advertisements :Some aggrieved members of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in Ogun State have appealed to the state governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun, to immediately save the party from an imminent crisis.
The party faithful, who expressed concern over the gale of imposition of candidates within the APC ahead of the July 24 local government elections in the state, said Governor Abiodun, as the overall leader of the party, must rise to the occasion and rescue it from the grip of self-serving individuals masquerading as leaders.
This was contained in a statement issued on Sunday, which was signed on behalf of the concerned APC members by Sonuga Ramoni, a leader and youth activist from the Ikenne Local Government Area of the state.
Sonuga alleged that the procedures adopted by some party leaders to choose chairmanship and councillorship candidates in Ikenne LGA and several other local government areas in the state were fraught with widespread irregularities and barefaced fraud.
He warned that failure to redress the injustice meted out to many genuine and committed aspirants within Ogun APC may spell doom for the ruling party in the nearest future.
Sonuga noted that though not all aspirants can emerge as party candidates for elections, the APC in the state would have been saved from needless strife and agitation if the popular will of the majority of party members and leaders was allowed to prevail in the selection process.
He said, "We need to let the whole world know that the procedures adopted by some leaders of the party in many wards and local government areas grossly fell short of the directive by the governor for candidates to emerge either through consensus or primaries.
"Rather than abide by the directive of the governor in the overall interest of APC members, some desperate party leaders have been imposing candidates to the detriment of our great party. This development has inevitably caused agitations and protests across board.
"We are, therefore, concerned that if the agitations occasioned by the undemocratic selection of chairmanship and councillorship candidates are not looked into, it may spell doom for our party. Certainly, what we abhor is disintegration of the party.
“Our amiable governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun, should please intervene and address the widespread irregularities in the primaries."
