Brigadier General Benard Onyeuko, Acting Director, Defence Media Operations, confirmed the incident in a statement on Friday.
Onyeuko said, “They successfully cleared the village of the marauders to the admiration of the locals. During the encounter, troops successfully neutralized 21 bandits while others escaped with gunshot wounds into the forest as evident by the trails of blood along the criminals’ escape route.
“The gallant troops successfully rescued three kidnapped victims including an eight months old baby who have been in the custody of the criminals for more than 23 days. During the exploitation phase of the operation, the gallant troops recovered one AK 47 rifle, one AK 47 magazine and three motorcycles from the fleeing bandits.
“Regrettably, resulting from the encounter with the bandits, one gallant officer and two soldiers paid the supreme sacrifice while two other soldiers were wounded in action and are currently receiving medical treatment in a military medical facility and responding positively.”

The National Industrial Court of Nigeria has again ordered the organised labour comprising the Nigerian Labour Congress and the Trade Union Congress not to embark on its indefinite strike scheduled to commence on September 28.
Both unions had enjoined workers to embark on an indefinite strike pending when the Nigerian Government reverted to the old pump price of petrol and adjust the electricity tariff.
Justice Ibrahim Galadima on Friday gave the order in a ruling on an ex parte application moved on behalf of the Nigerian Government by the Acting Director of the Department of Civil Litigation of the Federal Ministry of Justice, Mrs Maimuna Shiru and Mr Tijjani Gazali, led the Federal Government’s team
This came barely 24 hours after the same judge made a similar restraining ex parte order in favour of a group, Peace and Unity Ambassadors Association, on Thursday.
The judge also restrained the unions, their officers, affiliates, privies from disrupting, restraining, picketing or preventing the workers or its affiliates or ordinary Nigerians from accessing their offices to carry out their legitimate duties on the 28th September 2020 or any other date.

Governor Kayode Fayemi of Ekiti State has dismissed his purported suspension by a faction of the All Progressives Congress.
Fayemi, Chairman of Nigerian Governors Forum, was suspended from the party due to alleged anti-party activities especially his role in the recently concluded governorship election in Edo State, which the APC says is contrary to the provisions of Article 21 (A) (ii) of its constitution.
The party claimed that Governor Fayemi hosted PDP member, Mr Femi Fani- Kayode, in the Government House in Ado Ekiti in the run-up to the Edo elections and also played a role in the gubernatorial election in Oyo State where he supported the PDP candidate to defeat the APC candidate.
Kayode Fayemi
Reacting to his suspension, Fayemi through his Chief Press Secretary, Mr Yinka Oyebode, said the faction that suspended him lacked the locus to handle the issue.
He added that his suspension was announced by persons impersonating leadership of the party, who are jokers.
“While one would have dismissed their claims as another failed attempt to polarise the party in the state, it is also important to put it on record that the action of the group smacks of criminal impersonation as none of those who signed the purported suspension letter were executive members of the party at ward, Local government or state level.
“The action is but a joke taken too far as they never had such power they want to arrogate to themselves while they were members of the party, much less now that they have been suspended," the statement reads partly.
Fayemi urged the public and members of the APC to disregard the news of the suspension as he remains leader of the party in Ekiti.

A group, Southern and Middle Belt Elders Forum, has questioned the commitment and loyalty of President Muhammadu Buhari to Nigeria over the recent approval of a rail project linking the country to Niger Republic.
The government had on Wednesday at the weekly Federal Executive Council meeting approved a $1.96bn rail project that would connect Kano, Katsina and Jigawa states then link to Niger Republic.
Nigerians also knocked Buhari-led administration over the move.
Reacting to the rail project, the forum in a statement condemned President Buhari for using the nation's resources to fund what it described as 'ethno-religious sensibilities outside the country'.
The elders forum posited that comitting such an amount to another country at a time Nigerians were being punished with atrocious prices of petroleum and electricity prices confirms that the President was loyal to a different civilization which he is abusing his leadership of Nigeria to promote.
The statement reads, "This project is being promoted at a time the Calabar-Lagos rail that is of great economic importance has been abandoned.
"We wonder what explanation the minister of Transportation will have to give to the people of South - South for abandoning such a project while Comitting to the wasteful project to Niger.
"It is not lost on us the absolute lack of integrity of this goverment in lying to us that the rail is being constructed to the border when Maradi is over one hour to the border of Niger with Nigeria.
"This insensesitive project is one more reason different nationalities in Nigeria should ask Buhari serious questions on his overt submission to those he shares civilisation with outside this country at the expense of those he deceives to be "fellow Nigerians".
"We must reject this squandering of our resources on another country."

Police spokesperson in Nasarawa State, Ramham Nansel, had earlier said no ransom was paid for their release.
He said, “They were rescued by the security agencies comprising police and soldiers supported by vigilante groups and hunters.”
But the officials, who spoke on condition of anonymity to BBC Hausa Service, said the police lied.
“What the police are saying is a big lie, there is no element of truth in it, the kidnappers established contact with our relatives, the money was withdrawn in Nasarawa town.
“They instructed that only the driver should come with the money; when the driver brought the money, they kept us aside and counted it to ensure it was complete, but because it was getting dark, they did not finish and asked the driver to go with us while they also proceeded into the bush

Prof Osinbajo pretends not to be a lawyer anytime he's in the Presidential Villa. But as soon as he is out of the power house to deliver speech at public forum, he immediately becomes an erudite human right SAN, lecturing the nation on rule of law, Administration of Criminal Justice, the need for quick dispensation of justice, non-manipulation of judicial system, non-conformity of law with human right abuses and other "fine fine medicine" to enhance the nation's jurisprudence.
But after coming down from the pulpit of public space, the professor pastor immediately ceases to be the erudite human right lawyer again on his way back to the Villa. Literally, he will secretely fold his silk, gown and keep it inside his bag, give an aide to keep for him until another public engagement comes where he will repeat himself on the need for expedited prosecution and adjudication of criminal cases.
Adeola Soetan
The "man of God" and "man of law" has been managing his life quietly as the VP, striking a delicate balance between tyranny and constitutionalism, what is and what should be. Quite understandable, it's not easy to serve God as a pastor and mammon as a politician in a lawless government. Ye cannot serve God and mammon. “No one can serve two masters, for either he will hate the one and love the other.. " Matthew 6:24. No middle point or fence sitting.
Delivering brilliant seminar papers on legal positions, ACJ, rule of law and posturing as a human right advocate remains nothing more than an academic exercise, a mere wishful thinking that will not be touched or implemented by a government he's number two at least by the constitutional hierarchy.
Can we remind Prof Osinbajo that government and its agencies are in the best position to exemplify the good practice of law he is always suggesting in seminar halls but unfortunately not in Aso Rock Villa. Many lawyers and judges often imitate government in practice and actions, when government and its agencies manipulate law and exploit technicalities in the justice system and treat law and the judiciary with contempt and ridicule, you do not expect lawyers to act better. So, healer heal thyself first.
Osinbajo should be reminded again that as he is busy delivering his homily on ACJ, quick dispensation of justice, rule of law and human right across the country, that there is a judicial hostage held by Buhari/Osinbajo's government in the now largest prison space in the world, Abuja, detained with movement restriction by the court through the manipulation of the justice system by the DSS. An agency that is not ready to prosecute him for over a year now but just to keep him indefinitely until Baba Agba, Buhari pleases. In case the Vice President has forgotten, your government's judicial hostage's name is Omoyele Sowore of #RevolutionNow Movement fighting for good governance that your government is severely lacking to deliver.
So Prof, it's not how much you talk or lecture us, it's how much you act, walk the talk on the side of rule of law, speedy dispensation of justice and human right protection.
It's a vice that as a Vice President, you have not stood against Malami, DSS' and your government's open, brutish and arrogant manipulation of judicial system to keep Sowore as a judicial hostage right there in your backyard. Not even under every draconian military regime was law so brazenly manipulated to keep hostage like this.
As a lawyer, a SAN, a Christian and pastor, you should know that your government or its agency, DSS, is not ready or serious to prosecute Sowore for terrorism, treasonable felony, money laundering, abusing the president, or other ridiculous charges of its fancy because it will be very stupid and ridiculous of your government to do so with no facts and evidence. Pastor, but you know the truth ke. "And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free" John 8 :32. "Conscience is an open wound only truth can heal it".
As a pastor, Osinbajo is expected to behave like John the Baptist, who spoke truth to King Herod. Yes, John was beheaded and his head was served on a platter after speaking truth to King Herold. Mark 6: 14-29, but the truth he spoke was never buried with him. At 60 years of "Independence", it's shameful that a government that came to power on the mantra of "change" and with about five SANs as cabinet members is keeping a citizen as judicial hostage.
Release Omoyele Sowore, Bakare and all political detainees in the government gulags now.
