The Alliance of Nigerian Students Against Neo Liberal Attacks (ANSA) has said the Federal Government’s threat of 'No Work, No Pay' against the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) strike is the "highest form of insensitivity and irresponsibility".
This was contained in a statement by the organisation on Saturday, in which it accused the Federal Government of "destroying public tertiary education in Nigeria".
ASUU had commenced an indefinite strike on November 4, 2018 to demand proper funding of Nigerian universities. See Also Breaking News BREAKING: ASUU Begins Nationwide Strike 0 Comments 3 Weeks Ago
However, a a memo dated Thursday, November 29, 2018 sent by the Nigerian Universities Commission (NUC) to University Vice Chancellors had noted that the Federal Government would enforce the 'No Work, No Pay' rule on the ASUU members.
Meanwhile, ANSA condemned the move by the Federal Government, stating that it is "a bad indication".
The statement read: “The attention of the Alliance has been drawn to the threat of 'No Work, No Pay' by the FGN to the striking lecturers, ASUU. We regard this 'empty threat' as the highest form of insensitivity and irresponsibility of the Buhari-led APC Government. This, to us, poses a bad indication that the FGN is seriously ready to destroy the public tertiary institutions. It is so bad a government is dealing with intellectuals in this draconian manner.
“The use of all manners of violent approach to engage teachers who have been dedicated to their jobs and patriotic enough to call the attention of the government to the rotten state of the public tertiary institutions is uncivilized and absurd to say the least. This action of the government we find very insulting to our lecturers who have displayed more patriotism than both Buhari and all anti-people political office holders joined together.
“We vehemently condemn this 'BOKO-HARAMIC' approach of the government of the day to murder the intellectual capacity of our dear nation and expose us to more economic and political tsunami, instead of working to make up this sector where it has massively failed.
“It is important to know that education is the only way a serious minded government can build its intellectual property viz-a-viz the economy. That is the reason UNESCO sounds that Nigeria and other developing countries earmark at least 26% budgetary allocation to education sector.
“Importantly, we also enjoin the ASUU, COEASU, and ASUP to immediately begin to unite these struggles, form a united front just like the Joint Health Staff Union (JOHESU) with the students' movement and declare a National Day of Mass Actions to ensure that we unitedly and collectively save the public education from these attacks of neo-liberalism.
“We hereby reiterate our position that the Federal Government of Nigeria immediately and unconditionally honour the agreements with ASUU, COEASU and other striking Unions for their demands are our demands.
“We are fully in solidarity with the striking lecturers until the FGN meet the demands of ASUU and Nigerian students. We call on the mass of students to join the mass action called by ANSA on Monday in Abeokuta to force the government to act.”

Experts on religious extremism have urged the Federal Government to take religious extremism in Nigeria more seriously.
Mahfouz Adedimeji, a social critic who was the guest speaker at a seminar organised on Saturday by the Save Humanity Advocacy Centre (SHAC), said religion has been politicised in the country to cause crisis.
Making a presentation on the topic: 'Religions as a Catalyst for Peace Building, National Integration and Conflict Management in Nigeria', Adedimeji decried the population re-grouping of global religious sects, noting that "conflicts have been given different names based on the various views of liberal, radical and neo-liberal perspectives".
He identified models of conflict management to include: conflict avoidance, compromise, collaboration and accommodation, stating that "religion has given rise to violence in the country and the world in general, with adherents using power, illiteracy and intolerance".
Using Iraq as a case study, veteran broadcaster, John Fiegener, said: "The IMN through its activities is tilting towards the same pattern of al-Qaeda and ISIS in Iraq, Afghanistan and Syria and if nothing is done to urgently contain the group, it will plunge the nation into a catastrophe of immense proportion.
"Nigerian authorities need to take more concrete steps in this direction as it is already stretched by Boko Haram insurgency."
He also called on Nigerians in their own interest to support government's effort aimed at securing the nation.
An international expert on religious extremism, Don Pathan, warned the Nigerian authorities to act fast in designating the Islamic Movement in Nigeria (IMN) a terrorist organisation before it is too late.
According to Pathan, the group’s activities poses a great threat to the sovereignty and the authorities’ continuous indifference towards the sect by tolerating IMN like every other religious group is akin to "playing with a keg of gun powder".
Dr. Oliver Tersoo Agundu, a senior lecturer at the Benue State University said: "The IMN as fundamentalists do not believe in individualism, liberty of personal choice or plurality of thought. They do not encourage or enter free debate; they deny others the right to express their own views freely and they cannot tolerate anything which they perceive is going against their faith".
He also called on Nigerians to support government's effort aimed at securing the nation.
The high point of the event was the presentation of a book titled: 'Terror in the Caliphate', written by Evangelist Sunday Attah.
The book chronicled the violent activities of the group as a terror organisation and called on Nigerians to understand the group better than social media posts, which many rely on to pass judgement.

A United States of America visa has been issued to Atiku Abubakar, presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
According to The Cable, a family source confirmed that the former Vice-President has been issued the visa.
Former President Olusegun Obasanjo is also said to have played a “critical role" in getting the visa.
There had been speculations that Atiku could not enter the US due to allegations of bribery linked to a former US congressman, William Jefferson.
Although Atiku has maintained his innocence, the opposition All Progressives Congress (APC) has made continued references to the visa issue.
On Thursday, Lai Mohammed, Nigeria's Minister of Information, had cautioned the US on granting visa to Abubakar, stating that the move could be seen as taking a bias position on the 2019 general election. In October, Gbenga Daniel, Director-General of the Atiku Presidential Campaign Organisation (APCO), had claimed that Atiku had received “signals from American officials” to apply for visa.
When questioned on the matter on Friday, Brussel Brooks, Public Affairs Officer (PAO) of the United States of America in Lagos, also refused to speak on the matter, maintaining that Atiku's visa status was confidential.
However, Atiku is said to have left Nigeria for the UK, where he will spend some time before going to the US.

Frustrated by the absence of their victims from home, suspected robbers penultimate Saturday left a note threatening to come back.
The incident happened at Grace Estate, in Iyesi area of Ado Odo/Ota Local Government Area of Ogun State, after the robbers broke into a three-bedroom apartment when the occupants were away from home.
The robbers were said to have made attempt to enter the apartment through the main entrance to the building, but they could not open the main door.
It was said that the robbers broke into the building through the ceiling of an adjoining flat and carted away one of the electronic gadgets in the house.
They were also said to have made attempt to break into the rooms, but the doors were too strong for them to unlock or vandalise.
Apparently frustrated over their not too successful operation caused by the absence of occupants of the building, the hoodlums were said to have left a note promising to return at no given date.
The note sighted by our correspondent reads: ‘’We are coming back o !!! Goodluck.’’
The incident was reported to the Obasanjo Farm Police Division, Ota.
It was learnt that policemen from the division visited the scene, while the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) of the station had directed his men to embark on constant patrol and surveillance of the community to keep the gang in check.
Speaking with The Nation, the owner of the building, Mr Dare Ogunyombo explained that he was away from home for some days with his family, when the gang visited his residence.
He said: ‘’ The suspected robbers visited my residence while I was away from home with my wife and children. They ransacked the house and scattered everywhere.
‘’I noticed that they fruitlessly tried to force their way into my apartment through the main door to the building. They however broke the ceiling of the next flat and entered my apartment through the roof, while they carted away a satellite television decoder in the living room.
‘’They also made attempt to enter my room but the door was too strong for them to unlock or break. I guess they were in a hurry to rob and because they were frustrated, they left a note on the table threatening to come back for me and my family.’’
Contacted, the spokesman of Ogun State Police Command, Mr Abimbola Oyeyemi promised to revert to our correspondent. But he was unable to so at press time.
