The Nasarawa State House of Assembly has demanded the immediate sack of the Secretary to the State Government, Aliyu Ahmed Tijjani, for failing to account for N284.5m.

Members of the House of Representatives in Nigeria has described the call for an independent probe of the African Development Bank President, Akinwumi Adesina, as a witch-hunt.

The lower legislative chamber made this resolution following a motion by Minority Leader, Ndudi Elumelu.

While moving the motion, Elumelu noted that allowing an independent probe of Adesina could create a precedence of interference on the bank by external countries.  House of Representatives

He said, “The House is troubled that if this sort of witch-hunt and unnecessary harassment is not put to check and discouraged, it may become a recurring decimal, thereby destabilising the stability the bank has enjoyed for decades and the intended results on a steady decrease.

“The House is concerned that recently, a group of whistleblowers petitioned Dr Adesina, accusing him of 16 breaches of the bank’s code of conduct, some of which include private gains, impediments to efficiency, preferential treatment and involvement in political activities, which Adesina has continued to deny.

“The House is further concerned that on an investigation by the ethics committee of the board of directors, the allegations were found to be frivolous, unsubstantiated, lacked merit and therefore exonerated Adesina on all 16 allegations.

“The chairman (of the) board of governors, being satisfied that the committee had done a thorough job, having followed all known rules and procedures of the bank in handling such cases, declared Adesina exonerated.

“The House is worried that though the ethics committee of the board of directors followed the established law governing the AfDB in arriving at their decision in absolving Adesina of the allegations, the United States’ Treasury Secretary, Steven Mnuchin, in a letter to the Chairperson of the  bank, Niale Koba, rejected the verdict of the committee and called for an independent investigation into the allegations against Adesina, whose tenure is due for renewal, given the fact that he is the only contender to the office.”

The AFDB has bowed to pressure from the United States for an independent probe.

Nigeria has the highest stake in the ownership of the institution but Adesina is the first person from the country to head the bank.

Scores of women from Mmahu autonomous community in Ohaji Egbema council area of Imo State picketed an Indian oil firm, Sterling Global Oil Company, for refusing to pay for the burial of three members of the community killed by its staff.

Three persons were crushed by the security van of the company driven by some military personnel escorting a tanker loaded with crude oil out of the village on Saturday March 8, 2020.

While two persons died immediately, the third person, a woman, died at the hospital.  File Photo

Governor Hope Uzodinma brokered agreement between the community and the company with Sterling Global reportedly agreeing to pay the families of the deceased the sum of N20m for burial.

Two months down the line, the company reneged on its promise, a development that caused women of the community to besiege the company on Monday, vowing to stop the firm from operating in the community until the burial rites were fully paid.

Speaking on behalf of the women, Ezinne Abigail Chimaokwu, said the community were not happy about the gruesome killing of three of their children by personnel of the oil firm.

The women expressed disappointment over the manner the company was handling the situation, saying the entire community would fight to ensure the oil firm no longer used the routes for transporting its crude oil.

Chimaokwu maintained that the women decided to shut the company and block the roads for the burial rites to be paid, insisting that they would not leave the place until their demands were met.

She said, "These trucks with armed security men killed our sons and daughter and also refused to pay the death rites of N20m as agreed with the governor of the state who have appealed to us to accept the little token and bury the deceased.

“We cannot bury the deceased persons because of the traditional demands which must be perfected to enable them commence their burial process else they won’t be lowered to the great beyond.”

Addressing the women, the army commander in charge of the area, M.S. Akabi, expressed surprise that the company had not paid the death rites.

Akabi assured the women of security if they conducted their protest without destruction of property.

There has been a reported collapse of the Nigerian electricity grid.

Citing sources at the Transmission Company of Nigeria, Guardian reports that the country’s electricity system collapsed on Tuesday afternoon.

This makes it at least the third down time the grid was experiencing in 2020 following shut downs in January and April.

In 2019, there were no fewer than 12 recorded short circuiting of the grid.

TCN is the only part of the energy industry still in the hands of the private sector.

It has since 2017 began an expansion that it said increased its carrying capacity from 5,500 to 8,100mw.

However, the average power distributed in the country hovers between 3,500 and 4,000mw daily.

Yesterday, during a conversation I had with Ogugua Iwelu (Fela Broadway) analyzing a talented young man, we came to a conclusion that there were vivid traces of Majek Fashek in him.

Today, he forwarded a picture of Majek with a laconic caption "strangely". I clicked on the picture, underneath it, the confirmation of Majek Fashek passing.

That conversation that took place yesterday about seeing traces of Majek in a young talent, I take as a vivid legacy Majek left behind.  Majek Fashek performing in his younger years

With wit, talent, style, and audacity Majek claimed what his world didn’t obviously see as his. In the end, the world reclaimed what it didn’t reserve for him. He’ll be remembered as one those who carved his destiny by the means within his reach.

As Adam Clayton Powell Jr. preached to reclaim what some thought wasn’t his, “What’s in your hand?” the only thing left at his disposition was the metaphorical stick; that same stick that paved a way across the sea to liberate Moses' people.

Majek Fashek’s stick was the guitar.

Tip of his fret in the air, his fingers mime melodious rain chimes, and the lord answered his prayers. And then that guitar ushered him from the ghetto to big cities of "stained" glasses.

I will remember that smile that connected his lips, cheekbones, eyes, and a compassionate sentiment they revealed.

Rest in peace Majek.
