A High Court in Kenya on Wednesday ordered over N454million (KSh100 million) that was confiscated from a Nigerian national, Muazu Bala, at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport to be deposited at Central Bank of Kenya.

According to KenyaReport, Bala was arrested at the airport last Friday with the cash, with the Assets and Recovery Agency, suspecting it could be proceeds of crime or money laundering.

ARA had on Tuesday filed a case in court seeking orders to freeze the cash.
The money seized from Bala last Friday is in three denominations; US dollars (880,000), Euros (60,000) and Naira (63,000).

“To effectively investigate the matter, DCI Transnational Organized Crime Detectives are working with the ARA. The seized cash is believed to be from International Criminal Cartels,” says the DCI.

Bala was headed for Dubai.

“His failure to declare that he was carrying such a huge amount or documents to support the legitimacy of the cash, raises suspicion of money laundering,” says ARA.

In court documents, Bala said the cash was for conducting business in Dubai.
However, he did not have any supporting documents on the nature of the said business, or authorisation to move large amounts of cash.

At most international airports, one must declare currency of over $10,000 (about Ksh1 million). While having large amounts of cash is technically not illegal, failure to declare it can lead to forfeiture.

The Ghanaian electoral commission on Wednesday declared incumbent President Nana Akufo-Addo the winner of the country's presidential election.

The 76-year-old Akufo-Addo from the centre-right New Patriotic Party (NPP) beat his opponent and predecessor of the centre-left National Democratic Congress (NDC) with 51.59% of the vote. It is expected that this will be his second and final term in accordance with the Ghanaian constitution.

More than 13 million ballots were cast out of a total electorate of 17 million and across 38,000 polling stations throughout the country. Voters also chose 275 lawmakers for the national parliament, AFP reports.

Five people were killed in election violence. Otherwise, Ghana's poll on Monday was carried out mostly peacefully — a regular achievement for the West African country unlike for some of its neighbours that had seen violence following recent elections — although accusations of fraud mired the process before the official results were released.

The electoral commission took several days to tally up the votes and had urged for patience while they were "working around the clock."
Around 12,000 observers were present for polling day and reported only a handful of incidences of intimidation.
"While there were some challenges, these challenges were isolated and did not undermine the process's overall credibility," a coalition of observers said on Tuesday.

Ghana has successfully carried out democratic transfers of power for almost two decades and stands in contrast to neighbouring Guinea and Sierra Leone where violence disrupted recent electoral processes.

The two leading candidates signed a symbolic agreement on Friday to resolve any disputes in the courts and to avoid possible violence amid the tensions of the close contest and the country's first economic contraction in decades.

Over 60,000 security personnel had been stationed at polling stations to maintain order.

Tensions rose on Tuesday evening as the contesting Mahama warned his opponent not to "steal" the election, accusing the sitting president of using the military to intimidate voters.

"You cannot use the military to try and overturn some of the results in constituencies that we have won. We will resist any attempts to subvert the sovereign will of the Ghanaian people," Mahama said at a press conference in the capital Accra.

Akufo-Addo's information minister, Kojo Oppong Nkrumah, was quick to condemn the accusations as false and "irresponsible."

The candidate's comments mirrored those of US President Donald Trump who lost the presidential election in November but accused his rival of stealing the election.

Failure to accept the electoral commission's results could cast a shadow over the country's democratic credentials.
Before the electoral commission came out with its tallied results, the NDC communications director, Sammy Gyamfi, told DW that the commission wasn't doing its job correctly, "but they would fail because they cannot change the will of the people. We don't want to push anyone into an early celebration. We are on course; we have 140 parliamentary seats, safe and secured."

John Boadu, general secretary of the NPP, told DW of the implications of accusations coming from the NDC: "Creating insinuations creates a lack of credibility on our whole election process … We are happy to announce that for the next parliament it is obvious from the results declared across the constituencies that the NPP will still maintain a majority in parliament."

No fewer than five persons in Emede community, Isoko South Local Government Area of Delta State have been reportedly killed while over ten houses have been set ablaze by armed youths of Igbide community following a land dispute between the two communities.

SaharaReporters learned that the crisis, which started Tuesday and continued Wednesday, has claimed five lives at Emede community while houses and properties worth millions of naira have been razed down by the Igbide armed youths.

The age-long boundary dispute between the two communities had in 1986 to 1987 caused the death of over a hundred people, including houses that had been destroyed.

Speaking with SaharaReporters, an indigene of Emede community who identified himself as Kome and witnessed the Tuesday and Wednesday bloody crisis, said that the fight started from the bush where farmers were attacked by armed youths from the neighbouring Igbide community.

"At the bush, the armed Igbide youths killed one of our persons. Tuesday night, they also invaded our community where they shot sporadically, using sophisticated weapons," he said.

"On Wednesday, the armed Igbide youths also invaded our community with sophisticated weapons, shooting sporadically and left another four of our people dead while over ten houses were set ablaze in the community before they left.

"The Igbide armed youths attacked us unexpectedly on Wednesday morning. Their guns are too sophisticated, and we don't have weapons that can match them hence they had a field day killing our people, burning our houses and other properties and left unchallenged," the source said.

Our correspondent gathered that as at the time of filing this report, panic has gripped both communities while residents are said to be relocating to other neighbouring communities for safety.

Reacting to the development, chairman of Isoko South Local Government Area, Itiako Constantine Ikpokpo, described the situation as very embarrassing, even as he blamed the crisis on the failure of leadership in both communities.

"It's a regrettable and embarrassing situation we have at hand. Just yesterday, Tuesday, we held a meeting with both communities and just today, Wednesday, they are taking up arms against themselves. This shows there are dangerous weapons in their possession. While others are using their weapons to chase away herdsmen, they are using theirs to kill themselves," he said.

"I have reached out to the governor who in turn reached out to the state commissioner of police, the brigade commander and the DSS and I can tell you they are all on the ground to curb the situation. I am appealing to both warring communities to sheath their swords and embrace peace," added.

When contacted on the issue, the Delta State Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Onome Onovwakpoyeya, asked that a message be sent to her mobile line which has not been responded to as at the time of this report.

The Ondo State Security Network Agency,   Amotekun, on Wednesday said some herdsmen attacked its operatives on a farm at Osi Community, in Akure North Local Government Area of the state,  while the operatives were trying to settle a rift between them and the farmers in the community.

The operatives of the agency were said to have moved to the community, following a distress call from the farmers that cows had destroyed their farms in the area.

File Photo
The state Commander of Amotekun,  Chief Adetunji Adeleye, who disclosed this to journalists in Akure, the state capital,  however, said one of the herdsmen was arrested with dangerous weapons while the operatives seized 16 cows.

He stated, “Some farmers from Osi  Community ran to the office complaining that herds had destroyed their farms.  We sent our men there to assess the situation. They found out that the herds were actually on the farm and we invited the herdsmen. But unfortunately, on getting there, they attacked our men with knives and other dangerous weapons. But we were able to arrest one of them,  named Abdulkadir Mohammed.”

Adeleye also disclosed that his men arrested two suspected cattle rustlers while a NISSAN Serena marked LAGOS FJ 423 KRD, brought by the suspected rustlers to steal cows belonging to one Alhaji Ilyasu, was impounded.

He said, “One Alhaji Ilyasu,  a Fulani man, came to us that some people went with a Serena Bus to steal their cattle. They came to us, and we sent our men out. We were able to recover the vehicle they wanted to use in stealing the cows; we also recovered the cows.

“We were able to trace some of the rustlers that ran away to somewhere in Ogun State. We have apprehended one Sudauna Gombe and one Ogunyale Sola, who was the driver of the abandoned Serena. We have handed them over to the Agro Department of the  Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps for detailed investigation.

“We recovered two cows, which we have returned to the Fulani man that owns them, and we brought the vehicle to our office here because the rustlers ran away and abandoned the vehicle. But we were able to arrest those involved and they had confessed that they had been in the trade for some time.”

The Amotekun boss also disclosed that over 100 suspects had been arrested by men of the security agency in the state since it started its operations.

No fewer than twenty (20) people, all of them males, including a village head, Malam Falalu Galadima, have been kidnapped in Katsina State by suspected bandits.

According to HumAngle, the villages- Gamji, Ungwar Mato and another all in Faskari Local Government were attacked by the gunmen who operated for about three hours on Tuesday.

File Photo
The bandits, it was gathered, trekked down to the Gamji village, unlike their previous attacks in which they came on motorbikes.

One of the villagers, who did not want to be named for his safety, said he escaped into the bush when the gang came.

He told the newspaper that the bandits stormed the village around 10 pm on Tuesday and opened fire on the residents, kidnapped the village head and 25 others.

“No one can tell exactly the number of the people they abducted; we all know that they abducted the village Head and many others,” he said.

“We checked from house-to-house this morning and found out that 25 of our people are in their custody now,” said another villager who spoke without mentioning his name for security reasons.

“They came like people who migrated from somewhere else, heavily armed and covered their faces.”

“Two of my younger brothers are in their custody now; one of them is a law student in Yenagoa Law School while the other one is a graduate of Civil Engineering from Bayero University Kano,” he continued.

He said there was no presence of security agents around the village during the attack, noting that the village lies between Dandume and Sabuwa Local Government.

Another eyewitness recounted that the terrorists were in the village for about three hours.

“They were in the village from 10 pm up to 1 am and did not leave because there was no pressure from the security agents,” he said.

“We reported the issue to the military checkpoint, but they haven’t responded at all.”

The armed gang, according to sources at Unguwar Mato, kidnapped three persons including two women and carted away food items and drugs.

This happened some hours after the group invaded Bilbis village of Faskari local government. They killed four people, wounded an undisclosed number of people and carted away livestock, a source said.

Katsina State is one of the northwestern states that are facing serious and frequent bandits’ attacks despite the claim of the presidency and the state government that the situation is under control.

President Muhammadu Buhari has said that the country's land borders will soon be reopened so that trade with neighbouring countries can pick up.

According to a statement, the President stated this on Tuesday, during a meeting with the 36 state governors, while asking traditional rulers and community members to improve local intelligence gathering.

In the statement by the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, Garba Shehu, Buhari said, "Now that the message has sunk in with our neighbours, we are looking into reopening the borders as soon as possible.

"The sub-region is no longer safe, more so with the collapse of the former Libyan leader, Muammar Gaddafi's regime and the cross border movement of weapons and criminals.

"Governors must work with traditional rulers. Try and work with traditional rulers to boost intelligence gathering.

"Every day, I get situation reports about illegal refineries and the blowing up of pipelines. You must stop local rogues from sabotaging oil installations."

While addressing the issues of banditry and kidnapping reported in each of the geo-political zones, the President added, "Security is important, and we must secure the whole country. We are thinking very hard on the issue of kidnapping. We will make it possible for the military to get to the bandits and kidnappers and eliminate them."

Buhari also assured the governors that the country's military would continue to get the support they needed to fight criminals.

"I am not going to the public to speak about the vehicles and equipment we have ordered. What I can say is that the military received armoured cars and other equipment and they are training the trainers. More of such equipment, including military aircraft, will come in," he said.
