The police in Ondo have denied arresting suspects in the murder case of late Mrs Funke Olakunrin, daughter of Afenifere leader, Pa Reuben Fasoranti.

Afenifere spokesperson, Yinka Odumakin, had earlier said four suspects were arrested by the police in Ondo State.

He said, “We commend the dedicated officers who made the arrest just as we wait for a thorough investigation to follow.

"We have resolved to encourage the police to do their job properly.

“We appreciate all Nigerians who have encouraged our 94-year-old leader in this troubling season. It is our prayer that criminals will not go unpunished again in our country.”

But Tee-Leo Ikoro, the Ondo Police spokesperson, denied the arrest during a chat with SaharaReporters.

He said, "I have seen the report too and I don't know where they saw it but it is not from us.

"I spoke with the officer in charge of Special Anti-Robbery Squad in the state, he told me he's not aware of anything like that.

"So, the entire command is not aware of this and no arrest has been made."
Olakunrin was killed in July 2019 while on transit to Lagos from Akure, Ondo State.

Pep Guardiola’s 82-year-old mother has died after contracting Coronavirus, Manchester City announced on Monday.

“The Manchester City family are devastated to report the death today of Pep’s mother, Dolors Sala Carrio, in Manresa, Barcelona, after contracting Coronavirus,” the Premier League club said in a statement.

“Everyone associated with the club sends their most heartfelt sympathy at this most distressing time to Pep, his family and all their friends.”

Guardiola, 49, last month donated $1m to buy medical supplies for the fight against the pandemic in his native Spain, according to AFP.

Spain on Monday declared a fourth consecutive drop in the number of Coronavirus-related deaths, with 637 over the past 24 hours, the lowest number in nearly two weeks.

Fatalities, which were sharply down on the record 950 on Thursday, brought the total deaths in the country to 13,055, second only to Italy

Commissioner Danga

Women’s rights advocate, Dorothy Njemanze, has asked Kogi State governor, Yahaya Bello, to sack his Commissioner for Water Resources, Abdulmumimu Danga, who assaulted and raped a young lady in the state.

Danga had abducted, assaulted and raped Elizabeth Oyeniyi, the victim, for asking him to take care of his family. See Also Human Rights Kogi Commissioner, Abdulmumuni Danga, Brutalises Lady For Calling Him Out On Facebook

The commissioner found the post degrading and took the law into his hands.

SaharaReporters had exclusively reported the suspension of the commissioner by the state government, who are yet to announce a sack as demanded by the public.  See Also Breaking News BREAKING: Kogi Governor, Yahaya Bello, Suspends Commissioner Who Brutalised, Raped Lady Over Facebook Post

Sources revealed to SaharaReporters that the governor suspended Danga to allow for an accelerated investigation into the case.

Njemanze, who spoke with our correspondent, said the Kogi Government needed to do more to win the trust of the people by sacking Danga.

She said, “There is absolutely no evidence of any suspension from the governor.

“We demand evidence of the suspension.

“It is important because the abuser has access to state resources through his office and has been using them to ensure the victim is discouraged from seeking justice.”

The National Human Rights Commission has already waded into the case, assuring members of the public that it will follow up the case to the end.

Executive Secretary, Tony Ojukwu, stated that no individual no matter how highly placed would be allowed to get away with impunity.

Cardinal Olubunmi Okogie

Vocal Nigerian Catholic priest, Cardinal Anthony Okogie, has described the Coronavirus pandemic in the country as a blessing in disguise because it has exposed its poor political leadership.

Okogie wondered why the President Muhammadu Buhari-led administration would spend billions of naira on cars for lawmakers without planning to build hospitals to contain emergencies such as COVID-19.

Okogie went on to call on Nigerians to demand more from their elected representatives especially in times of crisis.

He said, "The outbreak of COVID-19 has been a dangerous yet revelatory moment in Nigeria.

"It is dangerous because this deadly pandemic has infected over a million and killed thousands of citizens of our planet. No one seems to know when and how it will end.

"But COVID-19 is also revelatory, a blessing in disguise because it has exposed Nigeria as a country where quality of leadership is of low grade. What we have known but denied for so long is now shown to us as an incontrovertible fact: that the quality of leadership in our country must improve.

"In the midst of poor-quality leadership however, Nigerians must speak in laudatory terms about Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos, his Commissioner for Health, Prof Akin Abayomi, and his entire team for rising to the occasion.

"For right or wrong reasons, Lagosians have been critical of his government since its inauguration on May 29, 2019. But it must be admitted that with a population said to be close to 15 million, if Governor Sanwo-Olu and his team had not provided outstandingly exemplary leadership, we would have had a more dangerous situation on our hands.

"At the risk of making a hasty judgment, it is to be placed on record that as at the time this was being written, Governor Sanwo-Olu and his team had largely prevented the spread of the virus in Lagos. Let us pray for them and encourage them so that they will continue to show exemplary leadership to other political office holders in Nigeria.

"COVID-19 has also revealed to us that rather than invest in good healthcare service delivery in Nigeria, we have a political arrangement that makes it possible to waste Nigeria’s money on government officials and health tourism abroad.

"Thanks to our country’s constitution, government in Nigeria is embarrassingly big, sinfully expensive, prone to corruption, and scandalously inefficient.

"Nigeria cannot adequately invest in the sectors of health and education because among other reasons, the constitution of Nigeria has established offices that will require an endless flow of petrol-dollars to maintain.

"By the time low-grade leadership combines with big government and the seemingly irresistible tendency to steal and or waste Nigeria’s money, you find a country whose hospitals are reduced to mere consultation rooms.

"It is therefore insufficient for our legislators to forfeit their salaries for two months as they have offered, it is also unsatisfactory for Senators to donate half of their salaries to tackle COVID-19. The humongous basic salaries and allowances of our political office holders should become a thing of the past.

"The money should be used to establish a regime of high-quality medical service delivery.

"COVID-19 has revealed to us that if we do not do something positive about our hospitals in Nigeria, if we do not invest our money in medical research, we shall one day find ourselves in a situation where we cannot even board a flight out of Nigeria to go on medical tourism. Let us make hay while the sun shines.

"Constitutional restructuring is a necessary condition for the production of high-quality governance. But if we continue to run the affairs of our country with a constitution that impoverishes and disables the citizens by establishing offices that do not serve the people, then we would not have learnt good lessons from this pandemic.

"Indeed, COVID-19 has been a blessing in disguise. It has exposed the falsehood and hypocrisy we call politics and religion in Nigeria.

"May Nigerians become sufficiently wise to read and interpret the signs of the time. For a stitch in time saves nine. Having taught us the hard way, may this pandemic go to bed early, never to rise again."

Fresh facts have emerged on how Chief of Staff to President Muhammadu Buhari, Abba Kyari, violated the Quarantine Act to embark on a private treatment for his Coronavirus infection in Lagos against the directive and recommendation of senior government and health ministry officials.

After being denied the usage of the Presidential Intensive Care Unit at Aso Villa, Abuja, and considering the Gwagwalada Specialist Hospital isolation unit too low for his standard and or liking, Kyari opted to move to Lagos to find treatment for the virus.  See Also PUBLIC HEALTH Buhari’s Chief Of Staff, Abba Kyari, Tests Positive For Coronavirus, Confirms SaharaReporters Story

Lagos has one of the most functional infectious diseases treatment and isolation centres in the country.

An Italian man, who first imported the virus into Nigeria in February, was successfully treated at the Lagos centre at Yaba before being declared free of the pandemic and released to go home.  See Also Exclusive EXCLUSIVE: How Italian Coronavirus Patient Had Contact With Several Persons In Ogun State Before Being Moved To Lagos Hospital

Another 23 persons have also been treated and released from the facility.

In the face of a global lockdown and with many countries with functional health systems closing their borders to international visitors, the Lagos centre is perhaps one of the few places to successfully deal with Kyari's case at this time.

But against expectations and advice by Ministry of Health officials, Kyari has chosen to be treated at a private facility in Lagos where according to findings by SaharaReporters, there are already fears that other persons around the place could be infected by mistakenly.

Recall that after returning from trips to Germany and Egypt and being infected with the virus, Kyari went about his daily activities as Chief of Staff to Nigeria’s President and in the process exposed dozens of persons to the virus.

Hours after he was confirmed to have been infected, it emerged that three of his staff had caught the bug from him.

A senior health ministry official, who spoke with SaharaReporters on Saturday, said that the purpose of insisting that Kyari was placed in a public isolation centre was for proper monitoring and control of the infection spreading further.

“The purpose of the isolation centres is to get public protocols for monitoring and control of infections

“He can’t engage in private treatment since it is an infectious disease. It is wrong under the law.

“It was the same arrogance that led him to bring the infection from Germany after failing to honour protocols that could have prevented spread,” the ministry official said.

Kyari’s decision to embark on private treatment against advice of government officials and top health practitioners violates the Quarantine Act and also runs foul of the speech Buhari gave last Sunday during his nationwide broadcast.

During the broadcast where he announced the lockdown of Lagos, Ogun and FCT in a bid to curb the spread of the pandemic, Buhari said, “As a government, we will continue to rely on guidance of our medical professionals and experts at the Ministry of Health, NCDC and other relevant agencies through this difficult time.

“I therefore urge all citizens to adhere to their guidelines as they are released from time to time.”

According to the act, “Health authorities of the places to which infected persons are proceeding are notified of their coming; they may be subjected in the places of arrival to a medical examination and such enquiries as are necessary with a view to ascertaining their state of health and may be required to report on arrival and afterwards at such intervals during continuance of surveillance as may be specified to the health officer of the city, town, district or place to which they proceed.”

But on Wednesday, Lagos State Commissioner for Health, Prof Akin Abayomi, said he does not know the whereabouts of Kyari in the city, indicating that the top Aso Villa official had violated the dictates of the Quarantine Act.

Abayomi said, “We’re exchanging information, but I haven’t asked him for his location. It has been a long time we talked about his health.”

Furthermore, Section 5 of the Act says, “Any person contravening any of the regulations made under this Act shall be liable to a fine or to imprisonment for a term of six months or to both.”

When asked on Saturday if any sort of action would be taken against Kyari for violating the law, none of the government officials approached by SaharaReporters were willing to respond.

“He opted for a private treatment with his own resources but why are others not allowed to treat themselves wherever they like?

“He has defied the regulations by treating himself in an unknown place. There is no evidence that the place he is being kept have been quarantined. This is totally wrong,” a Ministry of Health official said while expressing rage.

This disturbing development comes as the country grapples with the continued spread of the pandemic that has already seen confirmed cases rise to 209 and four recorded deaths.

There are fears that with over 6000 persons suspected to have come in contact with those infected now on the loose, the figure of confirmed cases could explode in the coming days.

Emperor Gabriel Ogbonna

A human rights activist, Emperor Gabriel Ogbonna, has been arrested and remanded in prison custody over an alleged false publication against Abia State governor, Okezie Ikpeazu.

Over 20 policemen in company with Chief of Staff to the governor, Tony Agbazuere, and Commissioner of Police, Ene Okon, were said to have stormed Ogbonna’s chambers and arrested him at about 8:30am on March 24 despite the directive of the Inspector-General of Police, Mohammed Adamu, against making frivolous arrests.

A source disclosed that Ogbonna, whose sin was calling on the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission to probe a former governor of the state, Theodore Orji, and his wife for allegedly mismanaging state funds, was quickly taken to Umuahia where he was arraigned before a Magistrate’s Court for alleged cybercrime and remanded at the Correctional Service Centre in Umuahia where he has been in the last seven days without trial.

The charge sheet obtained by SaharaReporters showed that the activist was charged with conspiracy and cyber terrorism on March 26.

It read in part, “That Emperor Gabriel Ogbonna ‘M’ and others now at large within the 18th-19th day of March, 2020, at 118 Market Road, Aba in the Aba North Magisterial District, knowingly and intentionally published false and threat message on the Internet that Governor Okezie Ikpeazu swore on oath before the ancient Harashima (A Hindu god) to abide absolutely by conditions presented by his predecessor in office and subvert the people of Abia State, that he also signed a document between the former governor of Abia State, Senator T. A. Orji, his son, Hon. Chinedum Orji, that the spirits they worship should deal with him if he fails in his undertaking, a publication you know to be false for the purpose of causing annoyance, inconvenience, danger, insult, criminal intimidation, enmity, hatred and ill-will against Okezie Ikpeazu, contrary to Section 27(1) (a) and 18(1)of the Cybercrimes (Prohibition Prevention ETC) Act, 2015.”

Ogbonna’s lawyer had filed a suit at the Federal High Court, Umuahia, seeking justice for him amid the risk of Coronavirus pandemic to his health and the injury he sustained when he was shot by assailants suspected to be government agents some years ago.

But the lockdown imposed by the Abia State government prevented the court from sitting.

The source explained, “They mischievously did this in order to illegally detain him for more than 48 hours.

“Barr Agbazuere, who is leading a syndicate for Governor Okezie, Senator T A Orji and his son Ikuku, who is the Speaker, made sure that Emperor did not get justice and was thrown into Afara Prison, Umuahia, for seven days without charges.

“Until today (April 4), he has not been charged and is still languishing in prison. The arrest by the Commissioner of Police, Abia State, was contrary to the directive of the IGP that frivolous arrest should not be made. Emperor did not resist arrest but stated that he should have been invited to the state if there was any need for it.

“His sin is calling the EFCC to investigate the former governor and his wife on the news that went viral about how they siphoned and mismanaged Abia State fund.

“His (Ogbonna) group also organised protests in Abuja and Umuahia where government sent agents to beat up the protesters and it ended bloody.

“Some years ago, Emperor sustained gunshot injury by suspected government agents which has made him to limp while walking.

“His passion for good governance in Abia State has kept him going. The NBA, Aba branch, has come up with a resolution to write about the illegal detention in national newspapers and report the activities of the Chief of Staff to Ikpeazu to the umbrella body in Abuja.

“Right now, Emperor is languishing in prison for speaking up for the people of Abia.”

The Victim

The Delta State Government, Minister of State for Labour and Employment, Festus Keyamo, and others across Nigeria have called for investigation into the killing of a young man, Joseph Pessu, by army personnel in Warri, Delta State, on Thursday.

Pessu was killed while driving through the city in the midst of a stay-at-home order put in place by the state government to curtail the spread of Coronavirus.

Reacting to the incident, Commissioner for Information in Delta, Charles Aniagwu, in a statement, said the state government was worried about the matter.

He said, “The state government has sent a delegation to the deceased family to condole with them over the loss of their son.

“The military authorities have been contacted to carry out an investigation into what led to the killing of the deceased.”

On his part, Keyamo vowed to forward a petition to the relevant authorities for a thorough investigation with a view to bringing the officers, who perpetrated the dastardly act to book.

He said, “I have received disturbing reports and images of the high-handedness and shooting of innocent citizens by men of the armed forces deployed to enforce the COVID-19 lockdown in my state, Delta State.

“Specifically, I have received reports of the killing of an innocent young man, Mr Joseph Pessu, in Warri.

“I unreservedly condemn this barbaric act by men of the armed forces who should exercise restraint when dealing with the civilian populace.

“I will be forwarding a petition to the relevant authorities to thoroughly investigate this murder and bring the officer(s) to book.”

Also condemning the incident, human rights activist and lawyer, Ogaga Ifowodo, said the army authorities must bring those responsible for Pessu’s killing to justice.

He said, “A soldier, eager to save himself from a 28-year-old citizen, Mr Joseph Pessu, who was in the street, concluded that the only way to do so was to kill him.

“There is no report so far that Pessu was armed, but even if he had been and threatening the life of the soldier, it would still be shocking that the soldier did not choose the non-lethal option of shooting to disable at the leg or hand, if he must.

“The Chief of Army Staff and Inspector-General of Police must ensure that the murderous soldier is fished out from wherever he is currently hiding.

“The Federal and Delta State governments must not only show true contrition for this needless killing of a citizen but also compensate adequately the family of Joseph Pessu.”
