As many individuals and groups insist on the resignation of the Minister of Communications and Digital Economy, Dr. Isa Pantami, over his pro-Taliban links, the Presidency on Thursday said he will not be sacked.

The Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, Garba Shehu, in a statement said Pantami’s ordeal in the hands of those calling for his sacking was not about his past utterances but about his current job as a minister.

The Presidency aligned itself with the submission of the embattled minister that he was young when he made those statements and that his position had since changed.

In videos from the 2000s, Pantami, who is a known Islamic scholar, had said that while he was against the extremist anti-western ideologies of Boko Haram, he supported some of what Al-Qaeda and Taliban had preached.

The statement read, “Today, there is an unfortunate fashion in public discourse that makes leaders in politics, religion, and civil society liable in the present for every statement they have ever made in the past – no matter how long ago, and even after they have later rejected them.

“This insidious phenomenon seeks to cancel the careers of others on the basis of a thing they have said, regardless of when they said it. The Minister of Communications and Digital Economy, Dr Isa Ali Ibrahim Pantami is, currently, subject to a 'cancel campaign' instigated by those who seek his removal. They do not really care what he may or may not have said some 20 years ago: that is merely the instrument they are using to attempt to 'cancel' him. But they will profit should he be stopped from making decisions that improve the lives of everyday Nigerians.

“The Minister has, rightly, apologised for what he said in the early 2000s. The views were absolutely unacceptable then, and would be equally unacceptable today, were he to repeat them. But he will not repeat them – for he has publicly and permanently condemned his earlier utterances as wrong.

“In the 2000s, the Minister was a man in his twenties; next year he will be 50. Time has passed, and people and their opinions – often rightly – change. But all discerning Nigerians know this manufactured dispute is nothing to do with the Minister’s prior words, but solely concern his actions in the present.

“This administration is committed to improving the lives of all Nigerians – and that includes ensuring they are not over-charged or under-protected for those services on which modern life depends.

“The Minister has been leading the charge against illegal data deductions and pricing; he has revolutionised the government’s virtual public engagement to respond to COVID-19 and save taxpayers’ money; he has established ICT start-up centres to boost youth entrepreneurship and create jobs; he has changed policy to ensure locally produced ICT content is used by ministries, starting with his own; and he has deregistered some 9.2 million SIMs - ending the ability for criminals and terrorists to flagrantly use mobile networks undetected. In two short years, Minister Pantami has driven the contribution of the ICT sector to the GDP to more than 18 percent, making it one of the top two playing a critical role in the emergence of the economy from the COVID 19-induced recession.

“In putting people first, the Minister and this administration have made enemies. There are those in the opposition who see success and want it halted by any means. And there is now well-reported information that alleges newspaper editors rebuffed an attempt to financially induce them to run a smear campaign against the minister by some ICT companies, many of which do indeed stand to lose financially through lower prices and greater consumer protections.

“The government is now investigating the veracity behind these claims of attempted inducement, and – should they be found to hold credence – police and judicial action must be expected. The Administration stands behind Minister Pantami and all Nigerian citizens to ensure they receive fair treatment, fair prices, and fair protection in ICT services.”

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission has declared wanted a businessman, Andrew Foubiri Warri, who is standing trial for allegedly obtaining N125 million by false pretences and issuing a dud cheque.

The EFCC said in a statement signed by its spokesman, Wilson Uwujaren, that Warri jumped bail following his arraignment and resisted re-arrest by its operatives at his office in Port Harcourt, Rivers State in December 2020.

Warri is the first of three defendants facing seven counts bordering on the offences before the Ikeja High Court in Lagos.

The other defendants on the charge sheet are A.M Projects Consulting Ltd and Ranez Medical Consultancy Limited, in a case reported by a new generation bank.

“Consequentially and in line with professional best practices, the Commission approached a court of competent jurisdiction for an arrest warrant which was used in declaring the suspect wanted with a view to letting the public know and assisting in apprehending him to face the criminal charge against him which he obviously wants to evade.

The Oyo State police command on Thursday paraded a primary school teacher, Ebenezer Olawuyi for sleeping with two of his male pupils.

The 30-year-old, Olawuyi said he lured the pupils to his house to mark examination scripts for him and sodomised them.

The state command also paraded 33 others for armed robbery, kidnapping and carjacking in the state.

Speaking with SaharaReporters, Olawuyi said he didn't know what led him to sleeping with small boys instead of women.

He said, "I am doomed. I just slept with two boys. I had girlfriends while in school. I am not married yet. Both of the boys were my pupils. I invited the first one to help me mark my scripts at home with the consent of his parents while I slept with the second one in the classroom before school hours."

When asked how he convinced them not to tell their parents, Olawuyi said; "I told them that I want to have sex with them and they didn't argue. Both of them are between the ages of 11 and 14. I told them not to tell their parents because it has health benefits for them."

He further said the situation was giving him concern before his arrest because he didn't know what led him to it.

"I think it is the devil. I don't know what led me to this. I just lost my dad last week. I want the government to help me out of this," he said.

The Muslim Rights Concern has urged President Muhammadu Buhari to reject voices calling for the resignation of the Minister of Communications and Digital Economy, Isa Ali Pantami.

This is according to a statement issued by the Executive Director, Professor Ishaq Akintola.

Prof. Ishaq Akintola, Director of MURIC

The statement was titled ‘Pantami: Call for resignation afterthought, belated’.

The group condemned Pantami's critics, claiming it is a ploy to weaken the President Buhari-led administration. It also alleged that the critics want to score a cheap political point with their demand for Pantami’s resignation.

It reads, “The call for the resignation of the Minister of Communications and Digital Economy, Dr Isa Pantami, over remarks made as a teenager and long before he became a minister is quite worrisome. The question we are asking is ‘Why now? Why were those radical remarks not mentioned before now?

“None of the nouveau critics who are yelling today has mentioned any official misdemeanour committed by Dr Pantami while in office as DG of NITDA (National Information Technology Development Agency) or since he started serving as minister. So, the call for his resignation is therefore an afterthought. It is belated and it should be ignored by patriotic Nigerians.

“We call on President Muhammadu Buhari to ignore the rantings of Pantami’s critics. We advise Mr President to read between the lines. The idea is to rubbish the communications minister.

“But it is more than that. They want to score a cheap political point with their demand for Pantami’s resignation. It is also a ploy to weaken this administration.

“It is our contention that the brilliant initiative of NIN (National Identification Number), which is capable of exposing rogues and criminals is behind the attacks on him and calls for his resignation.

“The NIN initiative, which came from Pantami is giving unscrupulous elements sleepless nights and their desire is to stop it. They want our state of insecurity to continue. Mr President must not allow the enemies of Nigeria to have their way. Pantami is not the real target. President Buhari is the ultimate.”

Controversial pastor, Chukwuemeka Odumeje, the founder of Mountain of Holy Ghost Intervention Deliverance Ministry, Onitsha, Anambra State, and actress Rita Edochie, molested and humiliated comedienne, Mmesoma Mercy Obi, popularly known as Ada Jesus shortly before her death, vowing that she would never recover from her sick bed.

In video now viral after the comedienne’s death, Ada Jesus was brought to Odumeje and Edochie to seek their forgiveness over claims made by the comedienne, but the two hurled insults at her despite her critical state and molested her to the applause and jeers of the congregation.

Ada Jesus eventually died on Wednesday in Abuja after a prolonged illness, but many Nigerians are angry at the verbal torture and arrogance of Odumeje and Edochie towards the comedienne who, though paralysed and dying, did not get the pity of the duo.

Addressing Ada Jesus’s father and mother, Odumeje, also called Indaboski or Liquid Metal, yelled, “Your daughter said all what she said to me. You people must bring to me the people that you brought to me and I did fake miracles with (sic). If not, when I am done with her, and I will start with your generation. Nothing can stop me. Those people you bring to me to do fake miracles. Bring them.”

The tearful parents were seen begging Odumeje in front of his congregation but he dashed around in a fashion suggestive of a war commander who was hurt and wanted revenge.

Still in the video, Edochie repeatedly lambasted and cursed Ada Jesus, saying “Ada insulted my family. If I have ever for one day asked Ada, Odumeje said, or I have ever said, bring somebody to do fake miracle or Odumeje said, bring someone for fake miracles, anything I want on earth, may I never ever see it. But if I did not, Ada will not get up from this sickness. The husband came to me in Imo State where I was filming.

“He knelt down and he was begging, please, forgive Ada. I said I will not. Ada insulted me. She insulted my whole family. She insulted my great prophet. Nobody would stop me from following Odumeje. Ada will never get up from this sickness, before the father, I am saying it.”

"Get those people that I told you to bring, when you bring them, you will get up. If you don't bring them, you will go from here. Others will learn.

“If I am serving a living God, Ada Jesus, you can never get up from this sickness.”

"I helped you, from every source, I helped you. It shall never be well with you," she said, addressing a visibly ill Ada Jesus lying on the church's red rug.

As she said those bitter words, some members of the congregation even clapped.

In a viral video, Ada Jesus had alleged that the Anambra-based prophet connived with Edochie to stage fake miracles.

However, months after she made the allegations, Ada Jesus was diagnosed with a kidney problem that left her incapacitated.

A friend of hers, Ella Ada posted pictures of Ada Jesus in a pitiable condition, soliciting prayers.

She posted on Facebook, “Please pray for Ada Jesus, she’s really sick and has a kidney problem, she has been admitted to hospital. Please let’s pray for her; Ada, nothing will happen to you in Jesus’ name amen."

However, on Sunday, April 11, 2021, the actress, in a video released on Instagram revealed that she had forgiven Ada Jesus for spreading false allegations against her and Odumeje.

“I am here to tell you all that I have forgiven Ada Jesus. From my heart to heart, I have forgiven you, Ada Jesus,” she said in the almost three-minute video.

“Stop insulting men of God, particularly my man of God, Prophet Chukwuemeka Ohanemere Odumeje. Use him to respect me. He is good for me, that is why I am with him,” she stated.

“Stop mocking me because I am following Odumeje. Whatever anyone is comfortable with, let them do. I am comfortable staying with him. Look for a good place and stay. Leave us alone.”

David Okokon, lawyer to Don-Davis Archibong, a Junior Secondary School 1 student of the Deeper Life High School, Uyo, who was allegedly molested, has said the family of the victim will sue the church in a civil case and claim N1.5 billion in damages.

Okokon, who spoke with SaharaReporters on Thursday, said there are two court cases before the church: one in the magistrate court, instituted by the Akwa Ibom State government and a civil case at the High court which has yet to commence.

He stated that the Eagle Eyes Network Chamber had written the school on the matter to solve the issue without litigation but the church had allegedly asked that the family of the victim to “do their worse".

Okokon said the statement made by the school made his Chamber to institute a civil case at the High Court though the school has yet to be served.

He attributed the delay to the industrial strike action that was embarked on by the Judicial Staff Union of Nigeria (JUSUN).

The lawyer told SaharaReporters that the strike had also stalled the case at the magistrate court and that all the accused persons had been granted bail.

He said any moment the strike action is called off, the case at the magistrate court will resume (following the transfer of the presiding judge) and the civil case involving N1.5 billion at the high court.

Okokon said, “The matter is in court. We were supposed to have two separate matters in court: one in the magistrate court and the other at the high court. The one in the magistrate court has since commenced except that the day we were to be in court, was when the JUSUN strike started.

“We have been at the magistrate court about three times, the fourth time in the magistrate court was when the strike started. As for the case in the magistrate court, the culprits are being investigated by the state government.

“Now there is another civil matter and we are claiming N1.5 billion from the Deeper Life Church, it is even over N1.5 billion. We are claiming it from the Deeper Life authority, owners of the school. Incidentally, the strike started.

“We wrote to the school, thinking they will respond because the truth is that, the intention was not to go into litigation but to cause them to take responsibility and see how to resolve the issue. They replied us and were 'blowing tantrums' that we should do our worse and since what we can do will be within the premise of the law, we have decided to go to court.

“Incidentally, the court is on strike and they have not been served so once the court resumes, Deeper Life will be served. The one in the magistrate court is being handled by the state government. They don't pay money (damages). Once anyone is found guilty, they go to prison. But for this very one, once they are found culpable, the court will award damages.

“All the courts in the country are not in session, from the magistrate court to the high court. Once they call off the strike, everything will get back to normal.

“The one in the magistrate court has been ongoing. The third time we were in court was when they transferred the judge, brought a new judge so we had to start the case afresh. The day we were to start afresh was when the strike started. For now, the seven persons involved have been granted bail by the magistrate court.

“For the civil matter, in which we are claiming N1.5 billion in damages, we will serve them immediately after the strike.”

Respectfully speaking Mr Garba Shehu, the government is not telling Nigerians the truth, the statement that President Buhari cannot be bullied into negotiating with secessionist groups seem to give the impression that the  government is fully in charge or has some magic  to upturn situation when  in reality we are losing grounds to insurgence by the day.

We are aware that these problems have been and that they are beyond any political party, it is a time that Nigerians must sit down and tell themselves the truth. No matter how far we have gone in the wrong direction we will never arrive at our destination. Do not claim to be in charge and have control of this state of lawlessness, anxiety and uncertainty otherwise we will be asserting ineptitude, insensitivity  and maladroitness  as the  best  of the leadership to a citizen full of expectation from the government.

President Muhammadu Buhari

The youths are angry with the perpetual failure of government and are as at today still fighting themselves, whether as MILITARY, IPOB,  AFENIFERE, BOKO HARAM, BANDITS  OR MILITANTS. There is hardly any fifty five years old man at the forefront of any of these groups.  I advise the government that before these youths realize that they are not one another’s problem but failed leaders and leadership and come after the leaders please broker peace, give ear, create a forum for discussion and be ready to accept change. Do not forget that apart from the disbandment of SARS almost all the promises during the ENDSARS protest have been abandoned, security has worsened and our nation is down sliding.
