A 500-level law student of Rivers State University has been stabbed to death by an unknown suspect.

The 24-year-old lady, who attended Salvation Ministry until her death, was killed in her apartment off-campus.

According to a Twitter account, @phsabithetin was allegedly raped before she was killed.

Another source, who spoke to the PUNCH stated, “Her killers broke into her room near the Rivers State University campus’ main gate. The compound is close to other houses; we only knew her as Matilda and she was 24 years old. She danced ballet at the Salvation Ministry during our papa’s 57th birthday celebration.

“When the news broke on Tuesday, her friends and other final year law students could not attend classes due to the shock. I heard that Matilda used to live with two other female students, who were not at home the night when the incident happened.”

Spokesperson for Rivers State Police Command, Nnamdi Omoni, confirmed the incident.

Omoni said, “That she was raped is not the true reflection of what happened. But I can confirm that a young woman of about 24 years, who was staying off-campus, was killed on Tuesday by assailants.

“The assailants stabbed her to death. We have recovered the corpse and it is in the mortuary. We have spoken to her family and investigation is ongoing as the matter has been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department. No arrest has been made so far.”

Ifeanyi Ejiofor, lawyer to leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, Nnamdi Kanu, who was declared wanted by the Nigerian Police after his house was set ablaze, has dragged the police to court over the incident.

A clash in his home in Orafite, Ekwusigo Local Government Area of Anambra State, on December 2, 2019 led to the killing of three of his kinsmen and two policemen.

Ejiofor is asking a court to declare as illegal the move by the police declaring him wanted, stating that the police did not give him adequate time, opportunity and facilities to appear and respond to a complaint before the invasion of his home.

He is also asking the court to grant an order restraining the respondents, their agents, privies and howsoever called from further harassing, intimidating, threatening the life of the applicant and destroying the house and properties.

He is also asking for an order “directing the respondents to forthwith retract the publication/notice made to the public on December 3, 2019 declaring the applicant wanted.

“Compensatory and general damages in the sum of N2,000,000,000.00 (Two Billion Naira Only), against the police."

He is further asking for an unreserved public apology to the applicant in five national dailies and any other form of reparation that the court may deem fit to grant.

The United States has seized a jet belonging to a Nigerian indicted in multi-million dollar international fraud.

The jet was seized at the Peachtree DeKalb Airport in Georgia with a sealed sign placed on it.

The sign reads: “This property is under detention and/or seizure, United States Customs Service.”

The jet belonging to an unnamed Nigerian was searched for drugs.

Thor Whitmore, special agent, said, “It’s like a game of chess, we try to stay on top of their next move.”

The Homeland Security in 2019 has seized more than five tons of drugs, 200 guns and $4,375,457 cash.

As federal agents went through the plane, the accused was in court Tuesday for an initial appearance.

A removal hearing will also be held to send him back to New York where the charges he faces were originally filed.

Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami (SAN), has revealed that the Nigerian Government has ordered an investigation into the invasion of the Federal High Court, Abuja, by operatives of the Department of State Services to rearrest Omoyele Sowore.

Sowore was arrested in the court by the DSS less than 24 hours after he was released on bail after a third order by the court.

Malami was questioned by reporters when he was seen at the premises of the Federal High Court, Abuja.

When asked why he was in court, Malami said he did not come because of Sowore but to congratulate the judge on being confirmed as the substantive Chief Judge of the court.

He however, revealed that the government had instituted a panel to investigate the invasion of the court.

Asked if he was not appalled by the DSS’ conduct, Malami said, “Whatever affects the integrity of the court is a worrisome issue for us.

“I can never be preemptive of an incident over which I was not a live witness to.

“But one thing I am certain of is that the government has put in place mechanism for investigation of the reported incident.

“So, I would not like to be preemptive in terms of a conclusion, one way or the other, without allowing the consummation and conclusion of the investigation process.”

Godswill Akpabio, Minister of Niger Delta Affairs, has withdrawn from the rerun election of Akwa Ibom North West Senatorial District.

Akpabio had challenged the victory of Senator Chris Ekpenyong of the Peoples Democratic Party, who was declared winner of the February 23 election.

The Court of Appeal had ruled that a rerun election should be held in some parts of Ikot Ekpene Senatorial District.

Akpabio, in a letter to the National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress, Adams Oshiomhole, asked the party to submit another name to replace him as he won’t abandon a critical national assignment placed on him as minister.

He also urged the Oshiomhole to prevail on the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission, Prof Mahmood Yakubu, to redeploy the State Electoral Commissioner in Akwa Ibom State, Mr Mike Igini, if free and fair elections must be held.

He said, “I have taken into consideration the critical national assignment bestowed on me by Mr President which will be of immense importance to Nigerians and in particular the indigenes of the Niger Delta region and have resolved to remain as a minister of the Federal Republic of Nigeria to further discharge my contributions and services to our great fatherland.

“It is on the premise of the foregoing and particularly in line with the provisions of Section 35 of the Electoral Act, 2010 (as amended) that I want to formally and voluntarily withdraw my candidature as the candidate of the All Progressives Congress for the forthcoming re-run election for the Akwa lbom North-West Senatorial District."
