The Independent National Electoral Commission, in compliance with a court ruling, has listed a former governor of the apex bank, Charles Soludo, as the governorship candidate of the All Progressive Grand Alliance.

INEC, on Thursday, published a revised list of candidates for the Anambra governorship election.

INEC, however, still excluded the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) from the list of cleared candidates for the poll.

In the list published on July 16, INEC had excluded the candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), while Michael Umeoji was listed as the candidate for APGA.

But in a ruling on July 19, a Federal High Court in Awka, the Anambra capital, affirmed Soludo as the candidate of APGA.

Similarly, on August 10, a court of appeal sitting in Kano State had affirmed Victor Oye as APGA chairman — Soludo was elected governorship candidate of the party during a primary organised by the Oye-led faction.

Speaking on the development, Festus Okoye, INEC’s commissioner for information and voter education, had said the commission would comply with “valid court orders”.

In a statement on Thursday, Okoye said the commission met and deliberated on a number of issues, including the nomination of candidates for the Anambra governorship election.

According to him, the revised list of candidates is the result of a court order received by the commission on APGA, as well as the substitution of candidates’ names by various political parties.

“The commission was served with the judgement of the Court of Appeal (Kano Division) which set aside the judgement of the High Court of Jigawa State on the leadership of APGA and the nomination of its candidates for the Anambra governorship election,” the statement reads.

Okoye added that the final list of candidates will be published on October 7, 2021.

On June 23, Soludo emerged the winner of the Anambra governorship primary election of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA).

Soludo will be representing the party in the November 6 governorship election.

Soludo secured 740 votes to defeat other challengers. The total number of accredited delegates who participated was 795 while 792 votes were cast.

The Police Service Commission has set up an in-house panel to probe suspended Deputy Commissioner of Police and former Head of the Intelligence Response Team, Abba Kyari, over his links with serial internet fraudster, Ramon Abbas, aka Hushpuppi.

The police commission began its probe even as the panel set up by the Inspector-General of Police, Usman Baba, continued to delay the submission of its report, which should form the basis of the commission’s recommendations.

Meanwhile, the police commission’s panel is expected to examine the facts of the allegations as contained in the Federal Bureau of Investigation indictment and also look at the extant rules “as a means of keeping abreast of the matter” pending the submission of the report by the Special Investigation Panel earlier set up by the IGP.

Kyari had been indicted by the FBI in a $1.1 million Internet scam allegedly carried out by Hushpuppi and four others.

The commission had earlier suspended Kyari with effect from July 31 pending the outcome of the police investigation.

The PSC spokesman, Ikechukwu Ani, in a statement in Abuja on Thursday, titled, ‘PSC waits for Abba Kyari report, sets up in-house panel,’ explained that the panel is headed by the Director, Department of Police Discipline in the Commission, Tijani Mohammed, a lawyer.

It explained that the panel was “to gather and document relevant information on DCP Abba Kyari in view of his disciplinary matter and to analyze the information gathered and make appropriate recommendation/s to the commission.”

The panel, which has been inaugurated by the Permanent Secretary/ Secretary to the Commission, Alhaji Abubakar Ismaila, has started work while the commission awaits the report of the DIG Joseph Egbunike investigative panel on the matter.

The statement read, “The report of the in-house panel is expected to assist the commission take an informed decision when the investigative panel report is submitted for the commission’s consideration.

“The commission had also directed the Inspector-General of Police to furnish it with information on further development on the matter for necessary further action.”

SaharaReporters had earlier reported that the report of the IG panel probe of Kyari had not yet been concluded.

A statement by the Force Public Relations Officer, Frank Mba, on Tuesday had confirmed this.

It had said, "The Nigeria Police Force wishes to inform the general public that the probe into the alleged indictment of DCP Abba Kyari by the FBI, being conducted by the NPF Special Investigation Panel (SIP), is still ongoing.

"Members of the public are enjoined to note that the panel has not submitted its report to the Inspector General of Police, as being wrongly reported in some news outlet and online platforms.

"The Force hereby reassures the public that the outcome of investigations by the probe panel would be communicated accordingly upon conclusion of the investigations."

Two underage herders and 49 cows have been arrested by men of the South-West Security Network, Amotekun Corps, in Ondo State.

The corps arrested the culprits who are indigenes of Katsina State for flouting the state government’s directive banning use of underage herders and harassing a septuagenarian in the Kajola area of Akure South Local Government Area of Ondo State.

File photo used to illustrate story.

The operatives also arrested the father of the underage herders, Ibrahim Musa, 52.

The teenagers were accused of threatening Mrs Victoria Ajayi, 70, with a cutlass after her grandson informed her that cows had invaded their farm.

“That evening, I was resting after taking my drugs because I was under medication for hypertension. My little boy called and said there were cows in our farm. I saw a man standing afar, while the two little boys were with the cows.

“I asked them to call on their father as they gave deaf ears to my words and looked at me angrily.

“As I was trying to make the children understand they should take the cows out of my farm, one of them brought out a cutlass and pointed it to my face. Then I knew I was in for a big trouble.

“I quickly called my little grandson and went inside and shut my door. They were there for hours as I watched the cows eat my vegetables, pepper and also watched how they dug my heaps of yams with their legs and ate my yams.

“I quickly reached for my drugs because I had been managing high blood pressure for sometimes. I quickly took my boy and went out through the back door where they could not see me because I never knew their next move as we were alone in the house.

“The thought of renting another house occurred to me immediately because of the frequent herdsmen invasion with cows to my house. But this time, they almost got aggressive as I can’t predict their next move.

“I quickly left the house through the back door, dropped my boy with a neighbour and took an Okada to Amotekun’s office for help,” she explained.

However, Musa who said he had lived in Akure for over 30 years said he had never had trouble with any farmer described his action as a mistake.

Confirming the incident was Commander of Ondo Amotekun, Chief Adetunji Adeleye, who noted that his men responded to the distress call and met the cows ravaging her farm.

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo on Thursday received in his Abeokuta, Ogun State’s residence, the embattled Chairman of the Peoples’ Democratic Party (PDP), Prince Uche Secondus.

It was learnt that Secondus came to Obasanjo’s residence for a private meeting as parts of frantic efforts to resolve the crisis in the party, particularly ahead of the crucial 2023 general elections.

Secondus arrived at Obasanjo’s Penthouse residence at the Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library (OOPL), Oke Mosan, Abeokuta, alongside his entourage at 12:19pm.

He went straight into the meeting with the former President.

The PDP Chairman’s visit is not unconnected with the internal wrangling within the ranks of PDP.

Secondus is battling to keep his seat following the crisis rocking Nigeria’s top opposition party.

A crack had emerged in the PDP National Working Committee (NWC) two weeks ago, after the resignation of some officials and calls for Secondus’ resignation by some NWC members.

The leaders of the PDP comprising of governors, Board of Trustees (BoT), National Assembly caucus, however, intervened last week Tuesday.

After a resolution of the crisis, the PDP leaders agreed that the party’s national convention should hold in October to elect a new leadership.

But Governor Nyesom Wike of Rivers State, where Secondus hails from, has insisted on a change of leadership in the opposition party.

Although Wike was instrumental to Secondus’ emergence, the duo fell out as a result of power tussle.

Although Obasanjo has announced his withdrawal from partisan politics, he has a huge influence in the PDP. Obasanjo won two presidential elections under the PDP.

The Kwara Consultative Stakeholders Forum has filed a suit before the Abuja Division of the Federal High Court, seeking an order to restrain and stop the Kwara State government from taking a proposed N35 billion bond.

The group filed a case with suit number FHC/ABJ/CS/848/2021, before the court, stating the defendants of the case as Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, the Kwara State House of Assembly, the State’s Attorney General, Federal Ministry of Finance, Securities and Exchange Commission, Greenland & Growth SPV Limited, GTL Trustees Limited and EAC Trustees.

Kwara State governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq

It was learnt that some of the defendants had already been served.

According to the group, the governor has approved deductions and repayment arrangement for the loan, which is to start at the end of August 2021.

The N35 billion bond has generated controversy since the State House of Assembly in January approved Governor Abdulrazaq’s request to obtain the facility, as members of the public expressed concern about the fragile economy of the state.

Key stakeholders within the state including members of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) and the Peoples Democratic Party, (PDP) have also kicked against the government’s proposed N35 billion bond, highlighting certain loopholes.

The Kwara PDP had in a statement by its State Publicity Secretary, Tunde Ashaolu, condemned the State Assembly for approving what it described as the governor’s ridiculous and humongous loan request, warning that the move would hamper the state’s capacity to meet future obligations.

The party said the decision by the lawmakers to approve the loan request was “ill-thought-out, depressing and disappointing,” noting that the lawmakers were in the habit of approving any request the governor makes without considering its consequences.
