Following the resignation of Mr Ifedayo Abegunde as Secretary to the Ondo State Government, Governor Rotimi Akeredolu has appointed a new person to fill the position.

The new SSG is Temitayo Oluwatuyi, who is also from the same town with Abegunde.

Both men are indigenes of Akure, the state capital.

Oluwatuyi was the state's Commissioner for Natural Resources until he was appointed SSG.

Governor Akeredolu announced Oluwatuyi's appointment during a briefing at the Government House in Akure on Monday.

He said, “Today, I announced the appointment of Hon. Temitayo Oluwatuyi “Tukana” as the Secretary to the State Government to resume immediately following the resignation of Hon. Ifedayo Abegunde.”

On Monday, Abegunde resigned his position as SSG following a cold war between him and Governor Akeredolu.

The resignation of the former SSG comes less than three weeks to the governorship primary election of the APC.

When contacted over the issue, Commissioner for Information in the state, Donald Ojogo, said the government will react at the appropriate time.

The Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project has asked Nigeria's President, Muhammadu Buhari, to launch a probe into allegations that N300bn of public funds are missing as documented in the 2017 audited report by the Auditor-General of the Federation.

SERAP in a statement on Monday signed by its Deputy Director, Kolawole Oluwadare, asked Buhari to mandate Abubakar Malami, the Attorney-General of the Federation to lead the probe into the damning allegations.

“The 2017 audited report reveals grim allegations of mismanagement, diversion and stealing of public funds, as well as unaccounted-for spending. The report suggests a grave violation of the public trust, and that the indicted MDAs and the National Assembly lack effective and credible internal processes to prevent and combat corruption.

“Investigating and prosecuting the alleged grand corruption documented by the AGF would improve the chances of success of your government’s oft-repeated commitment to fight corruption and end the impunity of perpetrators. It will improve the integrity of MDAs, serve the public interest, as well as improve Nigerians’ access to public services and goods," the group said.

SERAP added that failure to do so will breach Nigeria's anti-corruption laws and obligations to international conventions against corruption.

“Any failure to promptly investigate the allegations and prosecute suspected perpetrators would breach Nigeria’s anti-corruption legislation, including the Public Procurement Act, the 1999 Nigerian constitution (as amended) and the country’s obligations including under the UN Convention against Corruption and the International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights to which Nigeria is a state party.

“It would also mean that Nigeria is failing to fulfil the obligations under the covenant to use its “maximum of available resources” to progressively realize and achieve basic economic and social rights, including access of Nigerians to public services and goods like quality education, healthcare, clean water and regular electricity supply, as well as the right to honest public services," SERAP added.

The Enugu State Magistrate Court on Monday remanded a couple, Mr Jude and Ifeoma Ozougwu, in a correctional center for allegedly brutalising a 10-year-old girl named Nneoma Nnadi with pressing iron and nails.

The couple was arraigned before Chief Magistrate Agu of Enugu North Court 1 sitting in the Enugu North Magisterial District by the state Police Command on three-count charge bothering on attempted murder.

Chief Magistrate Agu refused to admit the defendants  to bail and therefore ruled that the couple be remanded in the correctional center.

The magistrate said,  “In exercise of my discretion, the offence is grievous going by count one and count three of the charges; even as the girl is still been hospitalised as well as the overwhelming public outcry; I reject the application for bail.

“I hereby remand the couple in Nsukka correctional facility pending further advice by the state’s Directorate of Public Prosecution."

The defence counsel, Mr Emeka Orji, earlier prayed the court to disregard the various public sentiments on the matter and grant bail to his clients.

Orji noted that the offence was bailable and the court should use it discretion to grant the Ozougwus bail.

The matter was therefore adjourned until August 10 as the magistrate moved the case file to the Director of Public Prosecutions for advise.

SaharaReporters had reported how Mrs Ozougwu assaulted and inflicted injuries on Nnnadi using hot iron, nail and hammer for mistakenly allowing her little baby to fall to the ground.

She was also alleged to have inserted pepper into the girl's private part.

The IDH is where cases of the COVID-19 including Lassa fever are treated by doctors.

Doctors under the aegis of National Association of Government General Medical and Dental Practitioners withdrew their services from the IDH on Monday.

This was contained in a statement by the leadership of the association in Akure.

The statement was signed by the Secretary of the association in the state, Dr Tunde Olasakinju.

It reads, “We had through the congress requested that our members who are the COVID-19 specialists in the Infectious Disease Hospital, Akure, to continue to work till Thursday morning, 2nd July 2020 in the interest of the general public & particularly confirmation of the COVID-19 status of Mr Governor.

”It is however imperative that our members be withdrawn immediately (from midnight today 6th July 2020) due to lack of human face expected from the government. We are pained to have been made to do as such.”

On June 24, the leadership of the union withdrew the services of their members who are also in hospitals owned by government due to the failure to accede to their demands.

The medical workers are demanding a better welfare package including life insurance for frontline doctors, who are in the IDH.

They have also been complaining of the inadequate supply of personal protective equipments to aid their work and attend to patients at hospitals.

Ifedayo Abegunde, immediate past Secretary to the Ondo State Government, who resigned his position on Monday, has alleged that Governor Rotimi Akeredolu didn't win the 2016 governorship election in the state as declared.

Abegunde had on Monday morning tendered his resignation following a cold war between him and Governor Akeredolu.

He opened up on his resignation and issues between him and the governor in on a programme on Crest 87.7 Fm, which was monitored by our correspondent in Akure.

He said some "moneybags" in the All Progressives Congress including himself rigged Akeredolu into power in 2016 by manipulating the election result in his favour.

According to him, Akeredolu lost the 2016 governorship poll to the then Peoples Democratic Party candidate, Eyitayo Jegede, who he claimed was the winner of the election.

He said, "It was through the powers from me and other APC pillars that made INEC declare Akeredolu as governor after he had lost the election.

"So, Akeredolu didn’t win the Ondo governorship election in 2016 but we made it possible for him to become governor.

"We were the pillars behind him and we will not support him again. He will lose this time around.”

Speaking on why he resigned his position, the former Ondo SSG said he decided to quit the administration due to the way Akeredolu was running the government.  See Also Breaking News BREAKING: Ondo SSG Resigns, May Join PDP

He said, “Akeredolu has reduced the government to the property of his wife, son and in-laws and all government contracts goes to these same set of people from Imo State."

Abegunde further said he was unable to cater for the needs of those who joined him to support the government because funds were not allocated to his office.

He denied that the sum of N5m was being allocated to his office on monthly basis and accused the governor of telling lies.

He said, "Where on earth did the governor give me such funds or let him come forward with the evidence.

"Recently, I reported him to Governor Fayemi of Ekiti State and he promised to invite both of us to Abuja for settlement.

"I remember that I told Fayemi that I was going to spit on the face of Akeredolu if he repeated the lies that he was giving me N5m monthly.

"And I will then return to Akure to resign and as well inform the public of his looting spree.”

While stressing that he had worked with three different governors in the state, Abegunde described the government of Akeredolu as the worst in the history of the state.

Bishop Seun Adeoye, the Lead Bishop of the Worldwide Anglican Church in Nigeria, has reacted to the arrest of the Acting Chairman of the EFCC, Mr. Ibrahim Magu, by the Directorate of State Security as a development that confirmed his statement on Sunday that Nigeria was horribly stinking of corrupt practices under the present administration.

The cleric, who also doubled as the spokesperson for World Bishops Council (WBC), Africa in a statement in Osogbo, Osun State, explained that within seven days he issued two releases about the unhelpfulness of EFCC in a petition of alleged $7.5m fraud discovered at Nigeria National Petroleum Corporation.

He said, “Just last Sunday, I signed a statement titled ‘Let’s weep for Nigeria’ and I lamented that efforts by some few courageous Nigerians to help in the fight against corruption in the country were not being encouraged as anti-grafts bodies’ activities, in particular the EFCC revealed to be slow and selective.

“I have earlier in a statement on behalf of The Lightbearers on July 2nd told the world and indeed President Muhammadu Buhari that his government’s fight against corruption was being held down by some powerful individuals in Nigeria and I cited a case of a fresh fraud running to $7.5 million about N2.7 billion in NNPC.

“This case was straightforward but Magu’s EFCC just turned deaf ears to the matter.  A whistleblower, one Alhaji Ibrahim Farouk gave details of how an alleged monumental insurance fraud on the 2020/2021 NNPC insurance renewals was perpetrated.  See Also Breaking News BREAKING: DSS Arrests EFCC Acting Chairman, Ibrahim Magu

“He sent his petition to Magu. He gave a detailed account of how the premium for the insurance of corporation for the 2020/2021 was inflated by over 20 percent of the original figure and how the brokers to the business during a meeting held early February this year in London raised objection and pointed out the discrepancy which amounted to about $7.5m.

“Farouk disclosed that the brokers insisted that the action was not right and it was done at the expense of NNPC but back in Nigeria, the insurers and the management of NNPC signed off the documents with the inflated premium. This is just of many other petitions left unattended to.”

The cleric said God was now furious with all Nigerian commonwealth thieves and those who compromised with them as more heads would roll, while adding that no matter how powerful those stealing the nation’s public funds are, they will be caught, punished and put to shame.

According to him, God cannot be pleased seeing majority of Nigerians wallowing in abject poverty while some few individuals will covet what belong to all and “now that Magu is gone, I sincerely hope that not only the NNPC petitions will be looked into, other petitions lying in his office will be investigated as well”.
