The Minister of Defence, Bashir Magashi, has said that the security agencies can use force when required to deal with protesters.

"We can use minimum force, commensurate with what is seen on the ground," he said.

Minister of Defence, Bashir Magashi

Magashi slammed the peaceful protesters, saying the military and the government would not allow another round of protests to happen, because of the "unpatriotic elements" infiltrating the protesters.

According to TheCable, the defence minister stated these on Saturday in reaction to the #OccupyLekkiTollGate protest.

At the Saturday morning rally, more than 30 protesters, including Debo Adebayo, a Nigerian comedian, better known as Mr Macaroni, were arrested by security operatives.

The protesters have, however, been arraigned before a mobile court in Lagos, and granted bail.

Speaking on Saturday after participating in the All Progressives Congress's revalidation exercise in Kano State, the minister alleged that some of the protesters are rogues and thieves.

He said, "This #EndSARS issue, if you recall, the minister of information has briefed this nation and alerted that something like this is coming; and we know we are always prepared. This is our job to ensure internal security.

"We must plan for it. We don't want to be taken by surprise. And if you like us to be taken by surprise, then, there is no need to call us protectors. If #EndSARS is to take place today, we will ensure that we have peaceful counter plans to ensure that mistakes are not made in protecting the people.

"You know the composition of the EndSARS crowd. Over 60 per cent of them are people who don't even know why they are there. They just come to take part. Some of them are rogues; some are there to steal. They want to do whatever they think."

The minister added that the government would not allow "unpatriotic elements" to destabilise the country under any guise.

"Whoever is involved in this #EndSARS issue, the military and the government will not allow it to happen. But we will be as good as any other citizen to protect this country.

"We are not going to be harsh on anybody. We will maintain the law and peace to the best of our ability. We can use force when it is required. We can use minimum pressure, commensurate with what is seen on the ground. And that is where some people are getting it wrong."

No fewer than four people were reportedly killed in Shasha area of the Akinyele Local Government Area of Oyo State on Saturday, despite the market's closure.

Shasha market is one of the major hubs of farm produce from the north in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital.

It was gathered that the crisis broke out when a Hausa man reportedly beat up a pregnant woman who accused her of littering the frontal part of her shop, while the deceased man, a cobbler popularly called Adex intervened but met his untimely death as the Hausa man allegedly hit him with a magic charm.

According to eyewitnesses, Adex slumped immediately and started foaming in the mouth before he was rushed to a nearby hospital where he died.

SaharaReporters gathered on Saturday that four people were killed while more houses were set ablaze.

Yoruba people in the area told SaharaReporters that Soldiers from Odogbo Barracks, who were deployed to maintain law and order, were allegedly supervising attack on Yoruba people, which led to the mobilisation of more Yoruba youths to repel the attack.

A resident of the area, who spoke with SaharaReporters, claimed that four people had been killed already while many houses were set ablaze despite the market's closure and the curfew.

The source said, "As we speak, I notice four corpses on the ground. The soldiers are supporting the Hausa people, that was exactly the reasons Yoruba people are protesting."

Meanwhile, the Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Saliu Akanmu Adetunji, on Saturday, urged all warring factions in the ongoing crisis to sheathe their swords.

The first-class monarch, who lamented the high level of insecurity in the land in recent times, made this known in Ibadan today after holding virtual meetings with relevant stakeholders, including Hausa/Fulani leaders in Ibadan.

Oba Adetunji said it was important for people to eschew violence and bitterness by ensuring that minor conflicts do not degenerate to unnecessary tension.

"Many of our compatriots have been living with each other for a long time. We grow up and attend schools together. People from diverse ethnic groups do inter-marry and give birth to lovely children," he said.

Olubadan stated that he was surprised that a crisis could break out in Shasa culminating in large-scale destruction, such as burning properties.

He said, "Immediately the report of the crisis got to us in the palace yesterday, the Governor of Oyo State, Engr. Seyi Makinde was the first person I called. We have his promise that appropriate action would be taken as perpetrators would not go unpunished."

Oba Adetunji urged the governor to look into the possibility of compensating all those who have been affected by the crisis.

The Governor of Kano State, Abdullahi Ganduje, said the former Emir of Kano, Muhammad Sanusi, was ousted on Friday because he did not understand the responsibilities of a traditional ruler.

Six years after ascending the throne, Sanusi was dethroned in March 2020 by the state government, "to safeguard the sanctity, culture, tradition, religion and prestige of the Kano Emirate built over a thousand years."

Ganduje, who spoke on Politics Today, a Channels Television programme, alleged that the former emir was unable to transition from a social critic to a traditional ruler, adding that the former emir forgot "to watch his tongue" and was destroying the institution.

The governor said, "The real story was that the deposed emir of Kano did not understand the responsibilities of a traditional ruler, especially for a vital institution like that of Kano.

"The emir of Kano was a social critic, a celebrated social critic and there was nothing wrong with that because he is an educated person; there is freedom of speech."

Ganduje noted that as deputy to former Governor Rabiu Kwankwaso, Sanusi was an executive director in a bank.

The governor said, "He (Sanusi) made a statement that instead of providing water in the state, we were building a house in Abuja – the governor's lodge in Asokoro.

"I remember my governor said either the bank sacks him or we should withdraw our accounts from the bank and the bank did not sack him, so we withdrew N969m from that bank. That was the work of a social critic."

According to Ganduje, when Sanusi became the emir of Kano, he refused to change his stature to a traditional ruler.

"He is an economist but he failed to understand (that) in economics, you have to inherit assets and liabilities.

"But he only inherited the assets of a traditional institution by giving orders, staying in a mansion, dressing gorgeously, (and) being addressed as a king, but (not) the liability of that institution – you have to watch your words. You have to watch your tongue, and he didn't do that.

"That was the problem. That was the biggest problem; he could not change his life mode from social critic to an institution.

"As of now, that institution does not afford a social critic of his style. With the problem in society, he was destroying the institution. That was why I had a problem with him; he was destroying the institution," Ganduje added.

Speaking on the next All Progressives Congress presidential candidate, Ganduje said the slot should be given to the southern region.

"I think zoning should be respected as a strategy to win the election – the southern part of the country – but there should be a consensus from the members," he stated.
