The African Action Congress has said that it remains unmoved despite the vilification and persecution of its leader, Omoyele Sowore, by the Nigerian Government.

National Deputy Chairman of the party, South-South, Comrade Ken Henshaw, disclosed this on Monday in Abuja during the National Executive Committee meeting of the party.

He said the attack on its leader was as a result of the potential, vigour and prospects of the party to wrestle power from the ruling All Progressives Congress.

Henshaw said, “People have been saying revolution but why our own is important is because they know we are coming with force and that is why they have to take us out quickly.

“They did not imagine the resilience of the membership of AAC. They thought that as soon as they took our leader out, it will be all over for us. They never imagined that the movement could become stronger.”

Henshaw encouraged members not to be deflated by the harassment of the leadership of the party in some states, adding that it is a phase that would soon pass away.

He said, “I believe very strongly that in 2023 the contest will no longer be between the PDP, APC or any alliance for that manner. The party to beat will be AAC at the rate we are going.”

The meeting had in attendance the National Executive members and regional and state chairmen.

Leaders of civil society in Nigeria have asked the Supreme Court to set aside its judgment pronouncing Hope Uzodinma as duly elected governor of Imo State.

The apex court had on January 14, 2020 declared Uzodinma, who came fourth in the Imo governorship election in 2019 as winner of the exercise, removing Emeka Ihedioha from office in the process.

The group posited that the court erred in its judgment and faulted the process through which the apex court arrived at the decision.

In the statement signed by Dr Olusegun Awe Obe, the Concerned Leaders of Thoughts and Conscience in Project Nigeria, highlighted reasons the court should not have pronounced Uzodinma as winner of the election.

The group said that while Uzodinma’s petition was hinged on the Independent National Electoral Commission failing to record votes due to him from 388 polling units cut across the various local governments and electoral wards in Imo State, his arguments, evidences and witnesses did not back his claim.

The group said, “At the trial, no ward collation agent was called to show that at the collation centre, results were brought from the 388 polling units where the alleged exclusion took place and INEC refused to accept or collate them.

“The petitioner rather called 28 polling unit agents who came to identify some of the results tendered by the petitioner from the bar. All the electoral documents from Forms EC8A – EC8E were tendered from the bar and thus dumped on the court without anybody giving evidence correlating the contents of the result forms with the tabulation done by the petitioner himself.

“Each of the 18 polling unit agents under cross-examination, manifested ignorance of the contents of the documents and never convinced anybody of being present in their claimed polling units.”

The group further stated that the court failed to reckon with the argument of INEC that had in their reply to the petition disowned those result sheets and averred emphatically that no results were generated from those polling units as elections in those polling units were cancelled by presiding officers as a result of violence, over-voting, snatching of electoral materials etc.

The statement added, “It was on account of this and many other material contradictions that the Elections petition tribunal found as a fact that the evidence adduced by these 28 polling unit agents of the petitioner has been so contradicted under cross-examination and rendered so manifestly unreliable that no reasonable tribunal or court can ever rely on them for any purpose whatsoever.”

The coalition also highlighted contradictions in the election result tendered by Uzodinma as evidence, where election results are higher than voters.

The group said, “For us, the judgment constitutes nothing but an annulment of a valid election and judicial robbery of a popular mandate in a democracy, that can lead to the breakdown of democratic governance and the reign of civil disobedience and political anarchy in Imo State and the entire South-East region of Nigeria.

“For us, the judgment is a miracle as it completely overthrew all known judicial precedents and electoral jurisprudence in Nigeria.

“We therefore urge the court to do the right thing by correcting this error and pronounce Ihedioha as the rightful winner of the election.”

Uzodinma, who was declared governor of Imo on January 14 by the Supreme Court, said that he would no longer condone protests calling for his removal as governor.

He said, “My government will do all within the ambits of the law to maintain peace and order; those who are engaging in these incessant protests must stop forthwith.

"I took an oath to maintain peace and protect the lives and property of the citizens, I will not fail to deal with any group causing a breach of the peace in the state.”

David Lyon

A five-man panel of the Supreme Court led by Justice Mary Peter-Odili on Tuesday affirmed David Lyon as the authentic governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress in Bayelsa State.

The apex court dismissed the appeal filed by Heineken Lokpobiri, who had challenged the emergence of Lyon, claiming that he was winner of the September 4, 2019 primary election of the party in the state.

Through Tuesday’s ruling, the Supreme Court has laid to rest once and for all dispute arising in this regard.

Lyon is the governor-elect of Bayelsa after defeating several candidates during the keenly-contested poll.

Top members of Nigeria’s main opposition party, Peoples Democratic Party, on Tuesday, embarked on a peaceful demonstration at the embassy of the European Union and France in Abuja.

National Secretary of the party, Senator Ibrahim Tsauri, presented a petition by the PDP officials at both embassies.

According to Tsauri, democracy has been derailed in Nigeria and therefore the international community needed to wade in to save the situation.

Recall that the PDP leadership had on January 20 embarked on a protest march in Abuja over the Supreme Court judgment that removed Emeka Ihedioha as governor of Imo State.

The party equally called on world leaders to intervene to save Nigeria's democracy.

Former Nigerian President, Goodluck Jonathan, has denied allegations made by ex-Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, Farida Waziri, that she was sacked because she probed some oil racketeers.

Waziri had claimed in her book that she was sacked because she made some arrest that could have foiled some illegal oil businessmen but she was ordered to release the suspects and was subsequently sacked.

Reacting to the allegation, Jonathan, speaking through his Media Adviser, Ikechukwu Eze, said Waziri was in fact sacked over national interest.

He explained that her removal had a lot to do with reasons relating to Nigeria’s interest and global standing which details Jonathan said he was obliged to keep as a state secret.

Ibe said, “It must be pointed out that former President Jonathan had no personal issues with Mrs Waziri.

"The former President had to eventually let her go in the national interest.

"Her removal, therefore, has a lot to do with reasons relating to Nigeria’s interest and global standing which details Dr Goodluck Jonathan is obliged to keep as state secret in our common national interest.

"It is very important to note that when dealing with the interest of the nation and the performance of the functions of a public office, a determined leader cannot prioritise the interest of an individual.”

Spokesperson for Nigeria's House of Representatives, Benjamin Kalu, has said that the purchasing strength of funds allocated to the National Assembly has reduced.

Kalu said this in an interview with Premium Times.

He said, “The National Assembly is an arm of government, and cannot be compared to a ministry.

“If you look at the budget for the last 10 to 20 years, you will see that it has been within the same bracket.

“Also, if you consider the purchasing power and the exchange rate over the years, there is a very huge difference between what it used to be and what it is now. It can’t purchase what it used to purchase.

“When you look at the number of the oversight functions of the House, it has increased because the number of MDAs of the executive has increased. Oversight costs money. Don’t rely on MDAs, if you do that, you are compromised. The House on its own is supposed to have enough budget to do what Nigerians want them to do.

“A watchdog needs to be fed for it to do its work. You starve your dog and you expect it to carry out its work? You don’t give him food, you cage him and you expect him to watch the enemies come in. This is why we need funding. This money is not going to individual pockets. That is why the committees are complaining.”

The Lagos State Chairman of the Christian Association of Nigeria, Apostle Alexander Bamgbola, has said that political leaders in Nigeria ought to be having sleepless night over the rising spate of insecurity and unemployment in the country.

Bamgbola, who spoke on Monday, urged the federal and state governments to intensify moves to contain insurgent groups perpetrating attacks on innocent Nigerians.

The Lagos CAN Chairman also spoke about the annual Interdenominational Divine Service of the chapter scheduled for Saturday, February 15, which he said would focus on praying for peace in the country and seeking an end to insecurity in the country.

He said, “The Interdenominational Divine Service (IDDS) is one major programme of CAN in Lagos.

“Church leaders gather to have a solemn assembly and prayers for the state and the nation and all Christians must come together in unity to carry out the program.

“This is the time to be united against the forces of evil attacking our nation. The church has been under gruesome attack, as we know what has been going on in recent times.

“The federal government has to rise up to deal with insecurity in the nation.

“With insecurity, the country cannot make any progress, that is why we have to pray more for the Lord to intervene in our nation.

“Our leaders should be having sleepless nights when you look at the number of unemployed youths in our nation.

“The youth are fed up, we pray they don’t explode and bring down this nation themselves. They finish university and are not guaranteed a job, that’s why we have to deal with insecurity so we can attract foreign investment.”

On his part, Bishop Tunde Victor Adegbite, CAN Lagos Treasurer, attributed the relative peace in Lagos State to the prayers and supplication of the CAN chapter.

He said that Christian leaders in the state must attend the 2020 edition of the IDDS to pray for more security in the country.

“Over the years, the Lord has been answering our prayers on the peace of the country. We want to be safe, have peace and security.

“The IDDS is a day for us to thank God on Lagos State and we urge all Christians in Lagos to attend.

“The relative peace in Lagos State has been because of the prayers we have been praying for the state.

“We pray to have better environment for everybody to operate. That is why we don’t have a religious crisis and unnecessary disaster in Lagos State and we pray for more protection for the state.”

President Muhammadu Buhari has said his administration will ensure that every kidnapped child in Boko Haram captivity is released.

Buhari made the comments in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia during the African Union summit.

He said, “A number of school girls from Chibok and Dapchi earlier abducted by Boko Haram have regained their freedom.

“We commend the gallant efforts of the Multinational Joint Task Force and the partners in supporting the reintegration of the girls.

“Let me categorically reassure you of the steadfast commitment of the Government of Nigeria to ensure the freedom of all kidnapped children from the shackles of Boko Haram.

“We will not relent until every child, boy, or girl, every Nigerian adult in custody of Boko Haram, is freed.

“It is for this reason that the Nigerian Government has condemned and is combating frontally the dreadful activities of terrorist groups like Boko Haram and the so-called Islamic State.

“Of course, the severity of these grave violations varies from country to country.

“The incidence of a single violation of children rights in any country is an indelible dent on the African consciousness and is to be deplored and condemned.”

The Federal High Court in Abuja on Monday granted bail to the immediate past Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Mohammed Adoke (SAN), on fresh money laundering charges.

Justice Binta Nyako also granted bail to the second defendant, Aliyu Abubakar, a report by PUNCH indicated.

The judge imposed the same terms and conditions of the bail earlier granted them by Justice Idris Kutigi of the Gwagwalada Division of the Federal High Court in Abuja, on January 30.

Justice Kutigi had granted each of the men N50m bail with a surety each.

Adopting the same conditions on Monday, Justice Nyako directed that the defendants should deposit their passports with the FCT High Court.

Defence lawyers – Chief Mike Ozekhome (SAN) and Mr. Olalekan Ojo(SAN), who said their clients had already met the bail conditions, pleaded with the court to make a specific order barring the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission from re-arresting them once the release order is served on the commission.

The judge said such order would not be necessary as there would be no basis for their rearrest or continued detention once the court’s release order is served.

Adoke and Abubakar had earlier pleaded not guilty to the seven counts of making payments of dollar equivalent of about N600m in violation of money laundering law.

The prosecution, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, alleged that they committed the offences in September 2013.

The judge fixed April 1 and 2 for trial.

"What he is doing in Edo State is not proper and he should not bring it to the rest of the Niger Delta."

Wike said Oshiomhole lacked the power to make pronouncements after the Supreme Court had ruled on a matter.

He stated, "Who is Oshiomhole to determine who has spread in a state? Supreme Court has made a ruling. It is unfortunate for Oshiomhole to come forward to say that nobody will be sworn-in. "It is unfortunate what Oshiomhole is doing because he wants to retain his position as National Chairman of their party. APC Governors  have rejected him, that is why he is struggling to prove that he is fighting for the party.

"He is making statements as if he owns the country. This is the same way he is carrying on in Edo State by fighting the governor.

"He believes that he has the forces to cause crisis. He is arrogating powers to himself, which is not good."

Nigerians have continued to react to Thursday's Supreme Court judgment, which nullified the emergence of All Progressives Congress candidate, David Lyon, as winner of the November 2019 governorship election in Bayelsa State.

The apex court went on to declare candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, Diri Douye, as authentic winner of the exercise.

The court, in a unanimous decision by a five-man panel of justices led by Mary Odili, held that Lyon's running mate in the election, Biobarakuma Degi-Eremieoyo, presented a forged certificate to the Independent National Electoral Commission, and therefore forced it to disqualify the joint ticket that produced them as initial winners.

Reacting to the ruling, former Vice President of Nigeria, Atiku Abubakar, commended the judges for the verdict.

Senator Ben Murray Bruce from Bayelsa on his Twitter handle @benmurraybruce, said the judgment was victory for truth.

While reacting to the ruling, Oyo State governor, Seyi Makinde, said, "I congratulate Senator Douye Diri, our party’s candidate in the Bayelsa governorship elections, who is now the governor-elect following the Supreme Court decision today.

Bauchi State governor, Bala Muhammed, described the verdict as a triumph for Bayelsa State.

Apart from prominent personalities, other Nigerians also expressed their thoughts about the ruling.

A Twitter user, @Israeloflife, while reacting to the development, said, “The Supreme Court has removed an APC governor and replaced same with a PDP man. There’d be no attacks on the judiciary now. There’d be no one million-man march against the decision. Democracy isn’t in danger now. Surugede is the dance of the spirits.”

@Uncle_Ajala in his reaction said, “See how the running mate to Lyon stopped him from becoming governor of Bayelsa State by presenting fake credentials according to Supreme Court.

"May we not work with someone that will ruin our hard work and achievement.

On his part, @Dinerojay22 said, “Let them scrap INEC since Supreme Court is now deciding who wins elections.

"INEC is losing its credibility everyday in the hands of our judiciary.”

@Olufemiloye in his reaction stated that, “I was about to say democracy will now be in danger or not depending on which side the politicians and their supporters are.

"Bayelsa judgment is as interesting as Imo judgment to me.

"And those who condemned the Supreme Court for the Imo will now commend it, and vice versa."

National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress, Adams Oshiomhole, has said that nobody will be inaugurated as governor of Bayelsa State on Friday.

He made the remarks after the Supreme Court on Thursday nullified the election of David Lyon as winner of the November 2019 governorship poll in the state.

According to Oshiomhole, the Peoples Democratic Party’s candidate during the exercise, Diri Douye, did not meet the requirement to be sworn in as governor as directed by the apex court.

Speaking with journalists in Abuja on Thursday evening, he said, “Nobody will be sworn in on Friday as new governor in Bayelsa State.

“In this case, nobody apart from David Lyon meets desired spread as expressed by the Supreme Court.

“The next candidate who happens to be a PDP candidate does not have one quarter of the votes cast in that election.”

Yenagoa, capital of Bayelsa State, is currently witnessing a heavy presence of security personnel following Thursday’s ruling of the Supreme Court in Abuja, which nullified the election that produced All Progressive Congress candidate, David Lyon, as governor-elect of the state.

Lyon and his running mate, Biobarakuma Degi-Eremieoyo, were sacked by the apex court, clearing the way for Diri Douye of the Peoples Democratic Party to emerge as new governor-elect of Bayelsa.

In a unanimous judgment delivered by Justice Ejembi Ekwo, the court ordered the Independent National Electoral Commission to withdraw the certificate of return issued to Lyon and hand a fresh one to Duoye after it was discovered that the academic credentials submitted to INEC by Degi-Eremieoyo were forged.

Resident of Yenagoa especially PDP supporters have since been jubilating all across the city following the ruling delivered earlier today.

Douye is expected to be sworn-in as substantive governor of Bayelsa on Friday.
