A mentally challenged woman has reportedly been set ablaze by hoodlums after she was allegedly caught with three AK-47 rifles at Abule-Ado, Trade fair area in Badagry, Lagos State.

After retrieving the weapons from her, the woman was mercilessly beaten by the angry hoodlums before they set her ablaze.

According to an eyewitness who took the video, the unidentified woman had put the three sophisticated weapons in one of her bags and hid the bag to prevent people from seeing its contents.

Residents claimed the woman who was said to be pretending to be mentally ill, was responsible for supplying weapons to armed robbers threatening the community.

Meanwhile, when SaharaReporters contacted the Lagos State Police spokesperson, Muyiwa Adejobi, he said the police had not been briefed about the incident and had not received any reports to that effect.

The Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike, has presented to the retiring Chief Judge of the state, Adama Iyayi-Lamikanra, a brand new house, a new Sport Utility Vehicle and a Hilux van.

Wike, on the other hand, warned the state chapter of Judiciary Staff Union of Nigeria (JUSUN), threatening the workers that if they fail to call off their strike by the end of this month, the government would have no option but to implement the law on no-work, no-pay.

He reiterated that there was no basis for the state chapter of JUSUN to have joined the protracted national strike as the issues in contention do not apply at all to states where judiciary workers enjoy financial autonomy and much improved staff welfare.

Wike stated these in his farewell speech at the special court session in honour of the retiring Chief Judge of Rivers State, Iyayi-Lamikanra, in Port Harcourt on Tuesday.

He explained that the state was aware of the agreement among the Federal Government, the Governors' Forum and JUSUN on the implementation of financial autonomy for the judiciary and legislative branches across the country.

“We would therefore neither set up any new implementation committee because it’s simply unnecessary, nor allow the state’s judiciary to submit its budget directly to the State House of Assembly in breach of extant fiscal policies and regulations that regulate the state’s budgeting process," he said.

Wike took a swipe at the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) for allegedly instigating tension in the state over the appointment of a Chief Judge. He also castigated the International Federation of Women Lawyers (FIDA) for making comments on gender equality because a woman was not recommended by the National Judicial Council to succeed Justice Adama Iyayi-Lamikanra.

The governor maintained that in the appointment of an Acting Chief judge, the most senior judge in the hierarchy is an absolute condition. But that is not the same in the appointment of a substantive chief judge.

He said, “Apart from the basic qualifications, sound character, ability to lead and work harmoniously with colleagues, hard work and willingness to take on challenging cases without a penchant for returning files for reassignment on flimsy excuses are some of the accepted dispositional requirements for such a very important appointment.

“At any rate, the state Judicial Service Commission could not have recommended a judicial officer who has become notorious for returning case files for reassignment on flimsy excuses to the prime position of Chief Judge.

“No one should have expected the state’s Judicial Service Commission to recommend for appointment as Chief Judge a judicial officer who had promised to reopen disciplinary cases already dealt with and reinstate persons duly disciplined for corrupt practices and abuse of office.

“And no one could have convinced the state Judicial Service Commission to recommend for appointment as a Chief Judge a judicial officer who had promised to work with the political opposition to make the upcoming political transition process very turbulent and difficult for the state.”

The governor extoled Justice Iyayi-Lamikanra as a bold, fearless and courageous judge who resisted political pressures to give the wrong judgment and halted the sitting of the kangaroo judicial panel of inquiry set up by the previous Governor to vainly indict his political reputation on spurious charges and fabricated facts.

He stressed that under the leadership of Justice Iyayi-Lamikanra the State’s judiciary effectively enjoyed both administrative and financial autonomy never before experienced in this State.

The governor thereafter presented to her the certificate of occupancy of the deluxe home built for her by the State government and the keys for the brand new sport utility vehicle and a Hilux van.

Justice Iyayi-Lamikanra said she would be eternally grateful to the governor, who with a determined heart, made it possible for her to emerge as the 8th Chief Judge of the state even though she is a non-indigene.

The Ebonyi State Government has reacted to the alleged bomb explosion in a school in the Afikpo North Local Government Area of the state on Tuesday, saying it was a hand grenade th went off.

The state government said the explosion claimed the life of a passerby.

There had been reports earlier today that a suspected suicide bomber surfaced in Ebonyi and attempted to bomb the Amaizu/Amangballa primary school in the Afikpo North LGA.

Reports had said the bomber attempted to enter the primary school but was turned back by the school’s security guard after failing to justify his reason for visiting.

“He immediately started running inside a nearby bush before a big bang was heard,” an eyewitness had said.

Residents immediately scampered to safety on hearing a loud bang before reconvening at the scene only to see the dismembered corpse of the bomber.

The eyewitness disclosed that the incident, which happened close to the popular Eke Afikpo Market, said to be the biggest market around there, caused panic in the area.

In a statement, however, by state government, Francis Nwaze, the Special Assistant on Media and Publicity to Governor David Nweze Umahi said the news was in sharp contrast to the reality as the incident was a grenade of a security personnel carrying out his duties at the said location that accidentally exploded.

He said, “My attention has been drawn to a news making the round in some section of the media that there was an explosion of a suicide bomb in Afikpo, Ebonyi State this afternoon.

“The above news is in sharp contrast to the reality as the incident was a grenade of a security personnel carrying out his duties at the said location that accidentally exploded. A similar incident occurred in front of the Ebonyi State Old Government House as some mobile police officers were servicing their APC machine.

“The first incident took the life of a passerby while the second caused injuries on the affected person, who has been taken to the hospital, where he is currently receiving treatment. The general public is, therefore, charged to disregard the fake news as it is the handiwork of enemies of the state who are bent on causing panic where none exists.”

A 34-year-old man, Okpegboro Avwerosuo has allegedly killed his roommate in Sagbama Town, Sagbama Local Government Area of Bayelsa State.

According to Tribune, Avwerosuo sold the vital organs of the deceased for ritual purposes to a pastor who is currently at large.

A neighbour of the duo who spoke on condition of anonymity said the suspect invited the deceased to come to Sagbama to join the motorcycling business and assured him that the business was flourishing because of the Isaac Jasper Adaka Boro College of Education (IJBCOE) sited in the area.

It was further learnt that when the deceased arrived in the town, he hadn’t stayed for more than two weeks when Okpegboro struck him with a pestle in the middle of the night, crushing his skull and killing him in the process.

The anonymous neighbour further explained that “after killing him, he dismembered the body, preserved the vital organs and put the other parts in separate sacks which he disposed of in the early hours of the following day. While he was disposing of the sacks, another neighbour who saw him and suspected his movements confronted him later in the afternoon about the whereabouts of his roommate.

“The suspect claimed that the deceased had travelled back to Delta State for an urgent business. Not satisfied with his response, the neighbour forced his way into the room and saw bloodstains everywhere. The neighbour held him down and alerted the local vigilante who eventually called the police to arrest the suspect.

"Upon interrogation, before he was handed over to the police, the suspect confessed that he had sold the vital organs of his friend to a pastor in Port Harcourt for ritual purposes and the pastor is currently at large.”

Also commenting on the incident, the President of Salga Federated Youth Council Worldwide, Comr. Preye Keku Casey, in a statement, condemned the gruesome killing of the young man, saying that the youths of Sagbama should be on alert to check the activities of non-indigenes in the town as security tension continues to rise across the country.

Parts of the statement read, “Just yesterday, the decomposing body of a young man was discovered in the bush by well-meaning Salgarians with several parts of the body already butchered into pieces and placed in sacks. The Nigerian Police, Sagbama Division, was alerted and it led to the arrest of a young man resident in Sagbama Federated Community, suspected to have been the perpetrator of the ungodly act.

“The president, while condemning the act, calls on Sagbama youths to be very careful and vigilant as they go about their normal activities, especially in the wake of the rising insecurity level in the country. He urged Salgarians to be careful of the places they visit, those they associate with and keep as friends, and as well limit the time at which they keep late nights.”

Taiwan was incredibly effective at managing the COVID-19 pandemic and the world has an opportunity to learn from that experience at the May 25-June 1 World Health Assembly (WHA) in Geneva. If only inviting Taiwan were that easy. Taiwan unfortunately has been blocked from participating in critical international efforts to control the spread of diseases, denied access to important platforms to share its knowledge and expertise, and the 24 million people living on the island are cut off from global health security initiatives.  This undermines public health in Nigeria, just as it does in the United States, Taiwan, and around the world.  We can all do the right thing and support Taiwan’s participation in international organizations where their contributions would help solve pressing issues, such as alleviating the COVID pandemic.

The WHA convenes senior health officials and leading health experts from around the world. It is instrumental to coordinating international efforts to improve the health of all people. Indeed, the motto of the WHO is “Health for All.” Taiwan participated in the WHA as an observer between 2009 and 2016, but today finds itself shut out due to political pressure from the People’s Republic of China (PRC). Beijing’s actions to prevent Taiwan’s participation in the WHA leave the world, the World Health Organization, and Nigeria worse off.

The world has much to learn from Taiwan at the World Health Assembly. Taiwan’s response to the recent pandemic, led by President Tsai Ing-wen, is rightly lauded as among the world’s most coordinated, transparent, and effective. Even before registering the first confirmed COVID-19 case on January 21, 2020, Taiwan activated its Central Epidemic Command Center (CECC) to facilitate inter-ministerial cooperation in prevention and monitoring measures. By late February, the CECC had published a list of 124 action items, which included ramping up mask production through public-private partnerships.

Taiwan managed to avoid an outbreak by relying on transparency and implementing testing, strict border controls, mandatory quarantine guidelines, and advanced digital technologies for tracking potential infections.  Taiwan threaded the needle between protecting public health and promoting a healthy economy, becoming Asia’s fastest-growing economy in 2020.

Taiwan not only successfully protected its population, it also sought to support the global population hit hard by the pandemic. In March 2020, President Tsai announced that Taiwan was “willing to contribute capabilities to better protect human health around the world.” Soon after, the island committed to providing 10 million masks to more than a dozen nations, including the United States. Nigeria has received over 100,000 masks from this effort.

Taiwan continues to pursue innovative avenues of pandemic support. In April, it launched a “travel bubble” with diplomatic partner Palau. As a result, Taiwanese travelers are arriving in droves and providing much-needed revenue to the tourism-dependent Pacific Island nation.

As long as Taiwan remains excluded from meaningfully participating in international organizations such as the WHO, the world cannot leverage Taiwan’s considerable strengths in medicine, manufacturing, and technology for the greater good.

Taiwan is ready to help us defeat this terrible pandemic. We should let Taiwan help.
