About one year after grabbing the headlines for being President Muhammadu Buhari’s potential bride, Nigeria’s Minister of Humanitarian Affairs, Disaster Management and Social Development, Sadiya Umar Farouq, has tied the nuptial knots with Chief of Air Staff, Air Marshal Sadique Abubakar, in a secret ceremony in Abuja.

The extremely private event, which took place last Friday, was the culmination of a love affair between the two public figures that dates back to more than a year ago, it was confirmed.

SaharaReporters reliably gathered that the marriage was delayed till last Friday after the controversy that followed the rumoured affair between Farouq and Buhari in October 2019 where it was alleged that the President was set to take her for a wife.

Sadique Abubakar and Sadiya Farouq

The news set the entire media space on fire, leaving many disappointed at the end when the purported wedding never became a reality.

Perhaps to fully banish the ghost of that rumour and keep it several radius away from her husband, it was reliably gathered that Farouq and Abubakar’s wedding was facilitated by the First Lady, Mrs Aisha Buhari, apparently in a self-saving move.

Although, it was rumoured that she dated and was planning to marry Buhari last year, Farouq, who had been around the President since she was a teenager, has never dated the retired military general.

However, in an attempt to get at the First Lady, members of the cabal around Buhari approached her parents in a bid to have her marry the President.

But with that episode now firmly behind them, Farouq and Abubakar proceeded to cement their relationship last Friday in the private ceremony.

The minister, who clocks 46 on November 5, has never been married and has no children.

The Chief of Air Staff, who is from Bauchi State, on the other hand, has 10 children from two wives – one of whom he has since divorced.

The two have kept their marriage a secret just the same way their relationship escaped public radar.

Farouq was appointed minister by President Buhari in 2019 while Abubakar, who is among service chiefs Nigerians have asked the Commander-In-Chief to fire for their poor tackling of insecurity in the country, has been in office since July 2015.

A Nigerian group in the Diaspora, Yoruba One Voice, has said that its proposed rally for the creation of Oodua Republic slated for October 1 will take place in six continents across the world.

The YOV, which has presence in 176 countries and is the umbrella body of over 300 groups of Yoruba descendants in the world, said the self-determination rally was designed to draw the attention of the world to the current situation and happenings in Nigeria.

In a statement by YOV's Director of Communications, Comrade Zacheaus Somorin, the group said it was time for the Yoruba to exit the entity called Nigeria.

The statement reads, “The rally is to sensitise the world on the need to liberate the Yoruba race from the shackles of bondage.

“We have made our position known to our people in Nigeria. The reason for seeking self-determination as the best means and alternative is to save the nation from impending implosion.

"Nigeria has failed. The country is failing by the day. Former President Olusegun Obasanjo said it recently, Prof Wole Soyinka also said it, even the Aare Onakakanfo of Yorubaland, Iba Gani Adams raised the alarm several times that the country was failing.

"Similarly, the revered former Catholic Archbishop of Abuja Diocese, John Onaiyekan now Archbishop Emeritus, didn't mince words recently in an interview where he said Nigeria can break up even before 2023 if we continue to be irresponsible and reckless.

"In Nigeria today, life is of no value. There is raging insecurity, electoral rigging, corruption, nepotism and cruel misgovernance. Nigerians at home are mostly affected. There is a need for us to rise against political enslavement by a section of the country. This 'forced marriage' has not been working.

"Nigeria will be 60 by October 1 and the truth is that there is nothing to show for it. Nothing except senseless killings, kidnapping, corruption, election rigging occasioned by bad leadership.

“So, we need to change the narrative. We need to fight against these lawlessness and huge misappropriation of national fortune.”

Somorin urged Yoruba indigenes to brace up to the reality of the situation on the ground, stressing that the coming event will surely change the narrative of the country.

A Federal High Court in Abuja on Wednesday stated that it was constitutionally wrong for President Muhammadu Buhari to have sought Senate confirmation of 11 nominees as high court judges of the Federal Capital Territory.

Buhari had in a letter read during Senate plenary in July sought the approval of the upper legislative arm for the confirmation of 11 judges for FCT courts.

President Buhari

Justice Inyang Ekwo in a judgment on Wednesday stated that the President did not need the approval of the Senate to approve such judges once they were recommended to him by the National Judicial Council.

Justice Ekwo held that Buhari acted in contravention of the provision of Section 256(2) of the constitution when he forwarded the recommended names sent to him by the NJC to the National Assembly.

The judge said the only instance where the President can forward NJC’s recommendation to the Senate in respect of a high court judge’s appointment is when it relates to the appointment of a head of court like the chief judge.

He, however, held that the fact that Buhari contravened the provision of Section 256(2) of the constitution did not affect that swearing-in of the judges.

The Court of Appeal sitting in Abuja on Tuesday adjourned a hearing of a case of assault and enforcement of fundamental human rights filed against Guaranty Trust Bank, the Nigeria Police Force and six others by a journalist, Desmond Utomwen, to November 5, 2020.

When the matter came up for hearing on Tuesday, the court noted that the appellants’ brief of arguments were not served on the police, the Inspector-General of Police and other police officers joined in the suit, PR Nigeria said.

The court, therefore, directed that the respondents be served before the next adjourned date.

The appellants also filed a motion for leave of court to file their reply brief out of time.

The three-man panel of the appellate court led by Justice Stephen Adah, therefore, adjourned to November 5, 2020 for the hearing of appellant’s applications and the substantive appeal.

Utomwen filed the suit following his brutalisation in December 2009 by men of the Nigeria Police Force and members of staff of Guaranty Trust Bank.

The journalist, who was a former staff of TheNEWS magazine, was arrested and locked up at the Garki Police Station while covering a protest by some customers of the Garki, Area 3 branch of GTB over alleged unauthorised withdrawal of funds from their accounts.

In October 2012, a high court in Abuja presided over by Justice Peter Kekemeke awarded damages of N100m against GTB and other defendants but the defendants appealed the judgment.

However, the case only came up seven years after at the Court of Appeal.

In the background of events that led to the suit, the Committee for Protection of Journalists noted that  lUtomwen was brutalised by several policemen in collaboration with some members of staff of GTB on December 11, 2009, for covering a peaceful protest outside the bank’s premises in Area 3, Abuja.

CPJ noted that the bank’s customers were protesting alleged fraudulent withdrawals said to have been made by the bank’s officials from their accounts through the ATM, quoting local journalists and news reports.

Utomwen in the suit asked the court to declare that his fundamental human rights had been violated when he was obstructed from working; had his equipment forcefully taken; and was attacked and hit with gun butts until he was unconscious, before being bundled into a police vehicle and detained for several hours without access to medical treatment.

For two years and 10 months, Utomwen relentlessly sought justice.

The case passed through two judges before reaching Justice Peter Kekemeke, who declared that the actions violated the journalist’s right to freedom from inhuman and degrading treatment, right to own moveable and immoveable property, and right to freedom of the press and expression as protected in sections 34, 39, and 44 of the 1999 constitution.

Ugochukwu Ezekiel, who took up Utomwen’s case on a pro-bono basis, sought a garnishment order against the police and bank and filed to enforce the court’s judgment.

Ezekiel, who carried the same air of confidence as he did during the 2012 judgment, gave the assurance that he would continue to take cases of journalists assaulted in the line of duty free of charge.

Such brutal treatment by law enforcement agents against the media has begun to draw fresh momentum in Nigeria and around the world.

Organisations such as CPJ, Amnesty International, Human Rights Watch and others continue to put the situation on the front burner.

Utomwen reiterated that his fight for justice was not for the money but the profession of journalism; protection of journalists whose rights to duty have continually been infringed upon and the freedom of the press.
