Some residents of Gbagyi community in the Chikun Local Government Area of Kaduna State paid over N3 million to Fulani militia to allow them harvest their crops and spend Christmas in their ancestral home without fear of being attacked, Southern Kaduna People's Union (SOKAPU) disclosed on Friday.

The group, in a statement, said it discovered the situation on Thursday when it took palliatives to at least 1,600 Gbagyi Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) who had fled surrounding villages taken over by armed Fulani militia.

It described the development as unfortunate, adding that such was indicative of the worsening security situation in the country.

The statement read: "We took drugs, sleeping mats and clothes to these traumatised citizens who Barde visited once and gave N50,000 for their feeding. They told us of the shocking impunity exhibited by the invaders, how they collect huge sums of money to allow the villagers to harvest their crops.

"We also spoke to victims of kidnapping who were ruined economically and more. We spoke to those who lost loved ones and property. We were told that the entire Chikun ward was under the mercy of the armed killers. It is unbelievable that we have a government."

It also said "a certain community paid N3m to the militia to be allowed to stay and spend Christmas”. “We were told that the entire Chikun ward is under the mercy of the armed killers. These people will spend their Christmas in sorrow and pain. No assistance to them is too small," the statement read.

A motorcyclist, Kabiru, popularly called Oluyole, and a female passenger were reportedly electrocuted in the Iwo Road area of Ibadan, Oyo State capital on Thursday evening.

SaharaReporters learnt that the motorcyclist was negotiating with a woman when the cable fell on them, killing both of them.

Our correspondent gathered that the woman, a food vendor, was in Iwo Road to get N1,000 balance of food a member of the National Union of Road Transport Workers had bought from her.

An eyewitness told SaharaReporters that officials of the Federal Road Safety Corps evacuated the remains of the two victims of the accident.

"Nigeria is doomed. An incident happened yesterday and nobody reported it. Two people were electrocuted by a cable that fell on them around Iwo Road.  In fact, there are still two wires there giving signs that they will also fall but nobody cares. I wish government officials would take note and do something about it now.

"That woman was a food vendor. I heard she was in the area to collect money for the food a member of the NURTW bought from her in the morning. In fact, the N1,000 that was paid to her was in her hand when she got electrocuted. Some officials of the FRSC in the state evacuated their corpses."

When contacted by SaharaReporters, the sector commander of FRSC, Mrs Uche Chukwurah, confirmed the incident on Friday.

Oyo State governor, Seyi Makinde, on Friday celebrated his birthday where COVID-19 protocols like use of face masks and maintaining social distancing were ignored.

The governor on Friday celebrated his 53rd birthday.

According to the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control, Oyo State recorded 28 cases of COVID-19 on Wednesday and 56 on Thursday.

The rising cases of COVID-19 in the country over the last few days have forced the government at various levels in the country to start taking precautions to curtail the spread of the virus.

This informed the decision of the Nigerian government to issue a new COVID-19 advisory to all states.

This advisory, among other things, called for the closure of schools for the next five weeks and ban on any gathering with over 50 people.

However, rather than prepare a guide on how the state can prevent the likely spread of the virus, the governor attended a birthday party organised for him at Saki.

Earlier on Thursday, Makinde, in his Christmas message to residents of the state, called for strict adherence to COVID-19 guidelines.

“Some of such daunting challenges include the COVID-19-induced recession and the pandemic itself, which experts said has entered its second wave.

“Let me also use this opportunity to warn everyone as they go about celebrating Christmas; please continue to adhere strictly to the COVID-19 guidelines and continue to #OwnYourAction,” Makinde said.

A High Court in Katsina State on Thursday gave an order barring the arrest of human rights activist, Muhammad Mahdi Shehu.

The court, in a document seen by SaharaReporters, suspended the enforcement of the arrest warrant issued by the Upper Shari’a Court 2, Nagogo Road, Katsina.

Mahdi Shehu

“The court sets aside the order for the arrest and detention of the Appellant/Applicant issued by the Upper Shari’a Court No 2, Katsina, presided over by Sagir Saidu in Complaint No CRF/424/2020 which is subject of Appeal No. KTH/16CA/2020, pending the hearing and determination of the motion on notice,” the document read.

The human rights activist had filed an appeal challenging the arrest warrant issued against him by the trial court.

Alhaji Sagir Saidu, Imam of the Sharia Upper High Court, had in a bench ruling ordered the police to arrest Shehu and compel him to appear before it.

The order followed the businessman’s failure to appear before the court for the continuation of hearing in the suit filed by Secretary to the Katsina State Government, Mustapha Inuwa, against him for alleged insults and defamation of character.

Shehu had in July asked the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to investigate Governor Aminu Masari and Inuwa for alleged misappropriation and misapplication of over N52 billion spent as security vote in the state from June 2015 to April 29, 2020.

The activist said the daily attacks by bandits in the state called for serious questions on the sincerity in the management of security by the state government.
