The Aare Ona Kakanfo of Yorubaland, Gani Adams, has urged President Muhammadu Buhari not to use soldiers to forcefully stop the #EndSARS protests that had gripped more than 20 states in Nigeria.
On Saturday, the Nigerian Army announced plans to kick off 'Operation Crocodile Smile' amid the ongoing protests.
Gani Adams
In a letter to President Buhari on Sunday, Adams said he could not imagine soldiers being sent to stop street protests, adding that the military was programmed to fight external aggression and not peaceful demonstators.
He added that using soldiers to quell protests by civilians had already been declared illegal by a Federal High Court in July 2020.
Adams said, “I can’t imagine soldiers being sent to stop protests. Soldiers are to fight external aggression. We are dealing with peaceful protesters. It is wrong to give the impression that Nigeria is at war with its citizens. We must do everything to promote and defend democratic culture.
"I condemn violence in all forms. I strongly condemn the actions of some security operatives that murdered the protesters. The list available to me shows 20 people have been killed across the country. I also condemn in the most profound manner the killing of any protester or the killing of any security official associated with the protests.
"The protests have been largely peaceful. The resort to violence by a section of the protesters is condemnable. It is uncalled for. Violence seeks veangace and creates wounds which scars never heal. Violence diminishes critical thinking, undermines democracy and destroys any noble intention of the protesters. It also questions the quality of those behind the protests. On the other hand, adoption of a violent response by the state should never be considered an option.
"I saw clips of the attack on the convoy of the Governor of Osun State, His Excellency, Gboyega Oyetola. This is detasteful. In the same way I condemn the violent attacks on the convoy of the Governor of Ekiti State, Dr Kayode Fayemi. It's unfortunate that the incidence in Osun led to avoidable deaths.
"The police should not just be reformed, it should be transformed. This is the time for you to work with the National Assembly to establish state and community policing system in line with the fundamental principles of federalism. You have a golden opportunity to do this. Go ahead and take the bull by the horn and save Nigeria from the potential of horrendous evil of a garrison state.”

#EndSARS Human Rights Politics News AddThis : Original Author : SaharaReporters, New York Disable advertisements :Bayelsa State Governor, Douye Diri, has directed that all schools in the state be closed due to rising flood water that had taken over homes, schools and farmlands.
A statement by the governor's Chief Press Secretary, Mr Daniel Alabrah, said the directive takes effect from Monday, October 19.
Governor Diri said the decision was taken to avert further danger to lives.
Duoye Diri
He gave the directive after leading a team on a visit to some of the flooded communities in Yenagoa and Southern Ijaw local government areas on Saturday.
The governor, who lamented the devastating effect of the flooding on the people and communities, said his administration would not abandon them at their time of need.
He said, "Due to the devastating effect of the flooding that I have seen, I hereby direct the Commissioner for Education to immediately shut down all secondary and primary schools pending when the floods would abate. We do not want to lose lives and we do not want reptiles to cause injuries to our wards.
“Painfully, we have to take this decision because the schools were just resuming from COVID-19 closure and here we have another natural challenge arising from flooding.
“I will continue with this visit to empathise and sympathise with our brothers and sisters. Let me assure all of them that as a state we are with them.”
Diri called on federal agencies, particularly the National Emergency Management Agency to come to the aid of the government and people of the state.
Diri emphasised the need for a permanent solution to the annual flooding challenge, saying the people had suffered enough.

David Oyedepo, presiding Bishop of the Living Faith Church, has hailed #EndSARS protesters calling for extensive police reforms and an end to rights violations in the country.
Oyedepo while speaking during the second service of the church on Sunday said President Muhammadu Buhari was leading a regime with no regard for human lives.
He added that the administration was killing the country's future leaders.
He said, “I warned this land concerning the evils that lay ahead, I was grievously attacked but see what is happening today, see where we are today.
“Many cannot pass through because of the protest which is legitimate, the protest is legitimate.
“If law enforcement agents can start shooting indiscriminately, senselessly at young individuals — imagine if we were killed as youths, will we be here today?
“If they (government) were killed when they were youths, will they be where they are today? And because no one can tell who is next, the youth have the legitimate right to express their displeasure and express it.
“Understand my moral reason for being quiet, I have been quiet because I warned. If the youth standing today stood by what I said, we won’t be here.
“There is no way the wicked can rule and people will rejoice, when the wicked rules, the people mourn. Absolute disregard for human life is the identity of this regime without any feelings whatsoever.
“Lord have mercy, you sent your warning and we refused to heed it about this wicked system. People who will change the story of Africa are among them, the devil does not just kill, his fight is against kings.
“When you see an onslaught like this, it is haunting for the kings — who can tell whether one of those ones slain is ordained to be president of this nation that will bring the nation out of the woods, we can’t tall.
“It is not for lack of what to do, it is finding a way to legitimately express their displeasure with this killer system.”

#EndSARS Human Rights Politics News AddThis : Original Author : SaharaReporters, New York Disable advertisements :The Nigerian Government has vowed to crackdown on peaceful #EndSARS protesters calling for an end to police brutality.
Nigerians in many cities across and beyond the country are protesting years of rights violations by the Nigerian Government and failed promises of reform of various institutions.
Reacting to the protests, Vice President, Yemi Osinbajo on Saturday apologised to young people in the country.
Lai Mohammed
Contradicting the Vice President less than 24 hours later on Saturday evening, Lai Mohammed, Minister of Information, Culture and Tourism, said the Nigerian Government will take firm steps against the protesters.
He said, “Peaceful protest is an integral part of democracy and that is why the Federal Government in the last 11 days has treated the protesters in a very civilised manner.
“But, if you look at what happened to the governor of Osun State, it has gone completely beyond peaceful protest against excesses and abuse of power by the police.
“There is nowhere in the world where a government will fold its arms and allow the country to descend into anarchy.
“We are no longer dealing with #EndSARS but a volatile situation that can lead to anarchy if the government does not take some very firm steps to protect the lives and livelihood of innocent Nigerians.
“We have nothing against peaceful protest but there are civilised ways of doing so.
“This is by going to a venue where you are not going to disturb other Nigerians because where your own right stops, other persons’ rights begin.”

#EndSARS Human Rights Politics News AddThis : Original Author : SaharaReporters, New York Disable advertisements :Catholic Bishops in Nigeria have endorsed the #EndSARS protests rocking the nation.
The Bishops said the protest was an accurate representation of the problem in the country and was morally justified.
Catholic Bishop's Conference of Nigeria cbcn.org
They, however, advised the concerned youths to avoid any form of violence during the protests.
This is coming barely three days after the General Overseer of the Redeemed Christian Church of God, Pastor Enoch Adeboye, also endorsed the protests against police brutality which have been ongoing across the country for over a week.
In a statement on Saturday, Most Rev. Augustine Obiora Akubeze, President of Catholic Bishops Conference of Nigeria (CBCN), said many lives had been wasted through unnecessary brutality and wrong application of force.
The clerics demanded justice for all victims of SARS brutality and police brutality and a review of the welfare of the policemen who have poorly been deprived by the system.
Part of the statement read, “Thus the cries of our children protesting against the brutality of SARS that manifests in extrajudicial killings, unlawful arrests, profiling of youths as criminals, the invasion of youths privacy by searching phones and laptops without any warrant or any just cause, and the incarceration of many of the youths in the SARS custody without trial.
“We the members of the CBCN have followed the protests with keen interest and call on the Federal Government of Nigeria once again to listen to the cry for justice so that peace can reign in our country. The protests seem to have a life of its own, and it is spreading all over the country; this shows that most Nigerians are facing the same oppression and brutality inflicted by the SARS.
“We urge the Federal Government to fulfil its primary constitutional responsibility of securing life and property of every Nigerian and provide opportunities for our children to realise their God-given potentials.
“The audacity and impunity with which the SARS officials have been operating all the while is a manifestation of the failing state of Nigeria. Various bodies and patriotic Nigerians have expressed the opinion that just ending the SARS would not solve the enormous problems of Nigeria, because it is futile treating symptoms of a disease when the root cause is known.
“We reiterate that restructuring this country is a desirable path to be towed given the various developments in this nation. The knee jerk reaction of the administration by abolishing the SARS and setting up the Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) team portrays either the absence of an understanding of the entire problem or a lack of sincerity to address the issue.
“The Nigerian Government must realise that what the youths, on behalf of Nigerians, clamour for under the code name #EndSARS is a comprehensive reform of the entire Police Force and not a change of name; they call for a reform of all our government institutions and a reform of the entire nation. They are asking for a system that will be hard on crimes and criminals in the society within the ambience of the law, while at the same time treating every human being, citizens and visitors alike, with respect and dignity.”
“EndSARS goes beyond the SARS, and it is morally justified. We support the youths who have taken this step, and we caution that they are allowed without any intimidation to exercise their right to peaceful demonstration and should not be provoked or incited to violence.”
The #EndSARS protests, which trended as number one globally on Twitter, was triggered by incessant cases of brutality and human rights violation by SARS, a unit of the Nigeria police force which was recently disbanded.
The protest, which started in Lagos and Abuja last week, has spread to many parts of the country and even beyond.
Although Mohammed Adamu, Inspector General of Police, announced the disbandment of SARS, a new unit named Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) team was created to replace the defunct squad.
But Nigerians have condemned the creation of the new team, saying it is a renaming of the disbanded unit.
The Nigerian Government had promised on multiple occasions to reform SARS and make the squad more accountable but failed to fulfil that pledge.
