The Nigerian Broadcasting Commission, on Tuesday, wrote Channels Television's Sunrise Daily programme crew over “inciting” comments made by the Governor of Benue State, Samuel Ortom, who was a guest on the show.

This was disclosed in a notice of infraction signed by the Commission's Director-General, Balarabe Shehu Ilelah, and addressed to the television station.

Ilelah alleged that Ortom made “inciting, divisive and unfair comments” which were not thoroughly interrogated by the anchors highlighting sections from the NBC code which the interview contravened.

The letter reads: “The National Broadcasting Commission monitored the broadcast of your programme Sunrise Daily between 7 am and 9 am on Tuesday, August 24, 2021.

“The programme which had as a guest, the Executive Governor of Benue State, Governor Samuel Ortom was observed to contain inciting, divisive and unfair comments which were not thoroughly interrogated by the anchors. These negate the following provisions of the Broadcasting code: See Also Insecurity Buhari Government Moves To Shut Channels TV, Orders Arrest Of Journalists Over Governor Ortom's ‘Anti-Government’ Interview

This was, however, condemned by human rights’ activist, Omoyele Sowore, who shared the letter on his Twitter handle on Thursday.

He wrote, “The stupid letter from the Nigeria Broadcasting Commission over Gov. Ortom’s interview with @channelstv. They’ve summoned the presenters over another interview with Retired Navy Commodore Kunle Olawunmi! Even a state Gov is NOT allowed to talk under @MBuhari’s tyranny."

The NBC also summoned the presenters on Thursday for granting an interview to former Nigerian Navy officer, Commodore Kunle Olawunmi (retd.)

Olawunmi had said Boko Haram terrorists mentioned names of current governors, senators and Aso Rock officials as sponsors during interrogation by the military authorities.

He, however, said President Muhammadu Buhari’s government failed to demonstrate the necessary political will to go after the high-profile politicians for reasons best known to it.

Olawunmi, a professor of Global Security Studies, said he was a member of the Intelligence Brief at Defence Headquarters during the leadership of the then Chief of Defence Staff, Gen. Abayomi Olonisakin.

No fewer than eight persons including a woman and her four children have been killed by suspected Fulani armed herdsmen who invaded Yelewata community in the Guma Local Government Area of Benue State.

Yelewata is a border community between Benue and Nasarawa states.

The herdsmen also injured many villagers during the attack on the community.

The Chairman of Guma LGA, Caleb Abah, confirmed the attack.

"Tuesday was Yelwata market day and the people were still in the market around 7pm when the armed herdsmen came and started shooting sporadically.

“In the end, eight people were killed, two persons were injured and one other person was abducted and is yet to be released till now. The injured have been taken to a private hospital for treatment since the doctors in government hospitals are still on strike,” he said.

Franc Fagah Utoo, the Principal Special Assistant to the Benue State Governor, who is from the community, described the incident as barbaric.

He also condoled with one Peter Akera who lost his wife and four children.

Utoo said the deceased gave birth to her children after two miscarriages.

"This is Peter Akera, the young man facing me bare chested. He is a friend and a brother, and more importantly, a very determined young Nigerian. Last night, Fulani Herdsmen invaded Yelewata, my village, a border town with Nasarawa State, and killed his wife and his entire four children. The wife was preparing supper for the little kids who were playing around," he narrated.

"The murdered woman experienced birth difficulties. She had two miscarriages before God finally blessed her womb and she was able to birth 4 children, among whom were a set of twins.

"Unfortunately, on Tuesday, 24 August, 2021, armed Herdsmen sneaked into her compound shortly after dusk, around 7:30 pm and shot and butchered her with the kids, while the husband was still in the market place. Three other people were also killed."

Members of the Niger State House of Assembly have alleged that pupils, benefiting from the national home-grown school feeding programme of the Muhammadu Buhari’s government, are being fed expired rice and given a quarter of an egg for their meals.

The lawmakers, after conducting an investigation, alleged that the programme was marred by a lot of malpractices and sharp practices from officials and vendors.

Nigerian children in an internally displaced persons camp

Disclosing the findings of the investigation while raising a matter of urgent importance during plenary, the member representing Suleja Constituency, Liman Iya, said pupils were served poor and under-nourished meals.

He said, “We wonder why primary school pupils in the state are served with poor and under nutritious meals. We are disturbed by this as it will defeat the purpose of the programme.

“I received a lot of messages showing pictures of the type of food being fed to the children. Our investigation showed that the type of rice is an expired quantity of rice and God knows how it was prepared.

“The ration given to the children is not enough. Certain meals that should be for one person are shared among three pupils.

“There are so many complaints across the state. So many malpractices are happening that need to be addressed."

He further called on the assembly to summon the state focal person of the Home Grown School Feeding Programme and all the focal persons in the local government areas to answer to the issues raised.

At the end of the deliberation, Niger Speaker Abdullahi Bawa Wuse said the state focal person for the programmes should appear to defend the allegations.

Days after his death, a video has re-emerged on social media showing former Deputy Senate President, Ibrahim Mantu, confessing how he rigged elections in Nigeria.

Mantu, a chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party before his death, was a member of the Senate from 1999 to 2007.

former Deputy Senate President, Sen. Ibrahim Mantu

He had represented Plateau Central Constituency in the upper chamber and emerged Deputy Senate President in 2003.

He died on August 16, 2021, at the age of 74.

Mantu while being interviewed by Maupe Ogun-Yusuf of Channels Television in 2018 said he helped PDP to rig different elections by bribing officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) as well as security agents.

The presenter had asked him to confirm his earlier comments hinting that he helped rig elections, to which he replied, “Let me tell you one thing, yes I did. I am now confessing the truth.”

He added, “I don’t have to go and change results but when you provide money, you give money to INEC boys to help if they see any chance that they should favour you. You provide money to the security (agents).

“All our elections in the past, I have been in this game for about 40 years and I tell you each time, it is not necessarily when I am contesting election but when my party sponsors a candidate, I will like the candidate to win an election.

“What we used to do before, we make provisions for INEC (Independent National Electoral Commission), we make provisions for security (agents), we make provisions for even agents of other parties so that they would not raise any objection to whatever we are able to get.

“So, whether I rig myself or not, by providing those resources, financial inducement to the officials, I am rigging.”

The people of Kogi West Senatorial District particularly those of the Okun division have called for greater participation in running the affairs of the state.

This was made known in a statement issued on Thursday by the President, Okun Development Association, Femi Mokikan, in commemoration of the 30th anniversary of the Kogi government.

According to him, the Okun people of Kogi state are less represented in politics and remain the only area lacking a university.

Mokikan said the establishment of an initiative, "EBIGO AGENDA” which mean Ebira, Igala and Okun Agenda, would promote unity and oneness of the government and people of Kogi State

He, however, called on the governor to ensure equity, fairness and justice by zoning the governorship ticket to Okun land and the Kogi West Senatorial District.

The statement reads, “Okun people are the Yoruba speaking part of Kogi State in North Central Nigeria. We were included during the Creation of Kogi in 1991 from Kwara State alongside Ebira people while the Igalas came from Benue State.

“Although history has made it empirically clear that Okun people migrated from Ile Ife, we met ourselves in Kogi in North Central Nigeria which made us to be called northerners.

“More than 30 years now, the Okun people are the most marginalised major ethnic group in Kogi State in the area of employment, appointment, project execution until recently when there was a paradigm shift in the present administration.

”On assumption of office, the Governor introduced a policy known as "EBIGO AGENDA" meaning Ebira, Igala and Okun Agenda. This primary purpose of introducing EBIGO was to promote unity and oneness of the Government and people of Kogi State with the sole aim of portraying the interest of Kogi first above individual or selfish interest.

“Without an iota of doubt, the EBIGO agenda is commendable and one of the best move of the New Direction Government of Alhaji Yahaya Bello as it has confirmed that Kogi State belongs to all, Igalas, Ebiras and Okuns as against the claims of some quarters in the past.

“As Kogi State Celebrates its 30 years of creation, it important to state that Okun is lacking behind as it is the only area in the State without a University as the East has the Prince Abubakar Audu University, Anyigba while the Central has the New Confluence University of Science and Technology, Osara.

“This is why we're appealing to the state government to as a matter of fact establish a university in Okun land to justify the equity, fairness and justice that form the mantra of the present administration.

“We also appeal to President Muhammadu Buhari to urgently sign into law the bill establishing the Federal University of Agriculture, Kabba as done for some states in Nigeria recently.

”At this juncture, we implore our people in Kabba-Bunu, Ijumu, Mopa/Amuro, Yagba East and West Local Government Areas as well as Oworo land to come out en masse and participate in the Voters registration by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

"If we want to continue to maintain the current political participation, it won't speak well for us and our children in future. We call on our people in Diaspora to motivate their children of 18 years and above to register for their PVCs at their respective LGAs. This is because we need to increase our voting strength.

“On the 2023 Governorship election, for the purpose of equity, fairness and justice the time has come for Okun land and Kogi West to present the next Governor of Kogi State. As a matter of fact, The Igalas have produced three different Governors namely, Late Prince Abubakar Audu, Alhaji Ibrahim Idris and Captain Idris Ichala Wada while Ebiras are presently occupying the Lugard House for the second term.”

Parents of Lagos State Model Colleges have kicked against a new increase in the feeding and welfare fees for students enrolled in the schools.

One of the parents, who spoke with SaharaReporters on the condition of anonymity, said the State government has now increased the feeding and welfare fee from N25,000 to N50,000.

He noted that the actual fee reviewed is N125,000, but with a N75,000 subsidy from the government.

He queried the sudden increase and subsequent subsidy when the government never gave a subsidy on the N25, 000 parents have been paying.

The aggrieved parent alleged that the surge in the fee is simply a means of extorting parents while the government officials enrich their own pockets.

He said, “No parent of Lagos Model College will agree to this N50,000 feeding fee for boarding students.

“Before now, we paid N25,000 for feeding and welfare; now the question is; has Lagos state government ever subsidised the N25,000 feeding fee before? No.

“Why now is the government interested in subsidizing and increase the feeding fee? The fee currently paid is N25,000; then the government came with a proposal to help us subsidise it after increasing it to N125,000 per child. At first, they claimed to subsidise N50,000 per child, asking parents to pay N75,000.

“Later, the state Commissioner and the Permanent Secretary of Education said it has been reduced to N50,000 per child. This means that Lagos State Government will subsidise N75,000 per child while parents will pay N50,000.

“This is to show that all officials of the state government in relation to the increase have a fraudulent motive behind the increase which is not justifiable.

“The present N25,000 paid by each student had long been mismanaged, full of fraudulent and unaccounted expenses. Honestly, there is a need for an audit of the money because N25,000 per student at 1000 students will give you N25million naira.

“The Principals in each school are the only administrators and signatory to the account and they spend this money at their will.

“Meanwhile, each student, on resumption per term takes some items called hostel requirements to school.”

“We know that the reason they have called for this increase is due to the fact that they cannot get their usual cut in the feeding fee and they want to maintain the cut.

“The Honorable Commissioner for Education owns a private school so also others calling for the increase. Their children are enrolled in expensive schools and abroad with our money. They don't have human feelings and sympathy.

“We, the parents have agreed that even if there is an increase, it should be pegged at N30, 000 which is all-inclusive of hostel requirements and auxiliaries per student.

“We are also asking for the inclusion of parents who are professionals in the kitchen management of the school.

“The Coalition of parents also demands the inclusion of parent body in the administration of the fee paid by students. This will enable proper needs and accountability.

“The parents through Coalition of Parent forum executives also call for the thorough AUDIT of the account of all Model Colleges in Lagos State.

”In conclusion, we have rejected the feeding fee of N50, 000 presented to us but have agreed to an upward review pegged at N30, 000,” another parent said.

The National Broadcasting Commission has summoned the presenters of Sun Rise Daily, a breakfast show on Channels Television over some recent interviews perceived to be critical of the President, Muhammadu Buhari.

This was made known by human rights’ activist and former Chairman of Nigeria's National Human Rights Commission, Chidi Odinkalu, on his Twitter handle.

He wrote on Twitter, ”There is confirmation that @nbcgovng has summoned the presenters of @sunrisedailynow for this morning.”

The summon by the NBC may not be unconnected to the utterances made by some guests brought to the programme on Wednesday.

They included the Benue State Governor, Samuel Ortom, and a former Nigerian Navy officer, Commodore Kunle Olawunmi (retd.).

According to him, the government had not been able to prosecute the sponsors because it was allegedly partisan.

He added that the Department of State Services had tremendous information on terrorists but they could not do anything except by the body language of the Commander-In-Chief.

A group named the People's Democratic Party (PDP) Action 2023, has called on former Vice President, Atiku Abubakar, to back down from contesting the 2023 general election.

The group accused Atiku of abandoning the party after he lost the 2019 presidential election to the candidate of the ruling All Progressive Congress.

They accused the former vice president of fleeing to Dubai, United Arab Emirates (UAE) immediately the election was concluded and left the party with its affairs.

Although, Atiku has not yet declared his intention to re-contest in 2023, his son, Adamu Atiku Abubakar has confirmed that his father would contest again.

Meanwhile, the Chairman of the group, Hon. Rufus Omeire on Wednesday, said in Abuja, that it was an act of betrayal for Atiku to have left the party and his supporter after the 2019 election adding that Atiku should give the younger generation the chance to contest the election.

He said, “It is a betrayal of trust for Alhaji Atiku Abubakar to neglect the feelings and sacrifices of ordinary voters who supported him and PDP in 2019.

“Now the 2023 elections are at hand, he has returned and started politicking once again. Apparently, the only thing he is very good at, is politics.

“We think that time has come for Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, GCON, to step aside and allow others, preferably the younger generation, to step forward.”

But the Special Adviser on Media to the former vice president, Paul Ibe, was unreachable for comments.

The Minister of Humanitarian Affairs, Disaster Management and Social Development, Sadiya Umar Farouq, failed to give out the Nigerian government back-up loans, known as N-Exit to the 500,000 disengaged Npower Scheme beneficiaries, SaharaReporters has learnt.

According to a source who spoke to SaharaReporters on Wednesday, about 14,000 beneficiaries of the scheme have also not been paid their stipends in the last five months.

Nigerian Minister of Humanitarian Affairs, Disaster Management and Social Development, Sadiya Umar Farouq.

The Farouq-headed Humanitarian Affairs Ministry launched the project to lift 100million Nigerians out of poverty but the beneficiaries of batches A and B were disengaged in 2016 and 2017.

The Minister, however, opened another portal to roll out loans to those affected but she has kept mute on the issue since she inaugurated it in May 2020.

The progamme by the Ministry in collaboration with the Central Bank of Nigeria was aimed at providing economic opportunities to volunteers, as it was stated early this year that, “A Portal that will enable Exited N-Power Beneficiaries to apply for Central Bank of Nigeria Empowerment Options has been launched by the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs, Disaster Management.”

Speaking on the condition of anonymity, one of the victims of the disengaged scheme lamented, “Npower Batch A and B who were engaged 2016 and 2017 respectively were disengaged since May 2020.

“While she launched another portal for exited Npower beneficiaries to apply for their exit package which the Federal government promised to give all the exited beneficiaries after serving for about three years.

“They are owing about 14,000 beneficiaries five months stipend but Sadiya Farouq keeps mute after making numerous promises without fulfillment while the 500,000 exited beneficiaries remained desperate for not getting loans promised while opening the portal.”

He stated further that detaching 500,000 youths from the scheme could be one of the reasons there is insecurity in the North, as jobless youths will resolve into criminalities to fend for themselves.

“Her mismanagement of the affairs with myopic thinking, abuse of the office she is heading and corruption that's running in her veins has contributed towards the growing insecurity situation in the North.

“The disengagement of Npower batch A and B beneficiaries might be responsible for the security challenges we are battling now. We say no to her false promises.

“Why would the federal government used and dumped us? How would it dump 500,000 law-abiding youths? We worked for it and we deserved to be given an exit package if at all the federal government can't employ us after they promised and later abandoned us.

“Afterall, we and our family members contributed much for the election that brought them, APC into power,” he said.

Confirming the situation to SaharaReporters on Wednesday, the National President of Exited NPower, Comrade Bashir Gobir said, “The Federal Government through Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs, Disaster Management and Social Development has refused to fulfil this promise since June and July 2020 to date.

“I have received more than a hundred calls every day from the disengaged beneficiaries; the same thing on my WhatsApp. This is uncomfortable. Sadiya Faruq promised us loans but nothing has been heard about the issue. It’s over a year. It’s so sad this is coming from her office and the Nigerian government.”

Following a lawsuit filed by the Indigenous People of Biafra against the sale of fighter jets to President Muhammadu Buhari’s regime, a United States District Court of the District of Columbia has summoned Secretary of State, Anthony Blinken.

The IPOB is seeking an independent nation for Igbos, especially in the South-East and parts of Nigeria’s South-South region.

“Within 21 days after service of this summons on you (not counting the day you received it) — or 60 days if you are the United States or a United States agency, or an officer or employee of the United States described in Fed. R. Civ. P. 12 (a)(2) or (3) — you must serve on the plaintiff an answer to the attached complaint or a motion under Rule 12 of the Federal Rules of Civil Procedure,” the summons said, according to People’s Gazette.

The IPOB had sued the U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken and Defence Secretary Lloyd Austin over the sale of attack planes, arguing that the war machines would be weaponised against the masses opposed to Buhari’s regime.

United States-based constitutional lawyer Bruce Fein filed the case in a federal court in Washington on behalf of the group and 10 unidentified individuals from Nigeria.

Buhari had ordered 12 A-29 Super Tucano fighter jets to tackle the ongoing war against Boko Haram. Six of the planes were delivered in July. Six more jets are expected in a deal of about $600 million approved by former President Donald Trump.

The U.S. Air Force Fighters and Advance Aircraft Directorate had told Nigeria that its 6 Tucano jet fighters would be ready for delivery by October.

“President Buhari’s intends to use the Super Tucano advanced weapons to kill and maim Biafrans and destroy their property in his ongoing genocide conducted by Fulani controlled security forces guilty of atrocious human rights violations,” IPOB said in a July 31 complaint.

“At present,” the complaint pointed out, ““President Buhari is conducting a genocide of Biafrans that is under investigation by the International Criminal Court through (the) use of his Fulani-controlled security forces, including the Nigerian Air Force.”

Nnamdi Kanu’s abduction and repatriation to Nigeria from Kenya in June 2020 was also cited in the court documents as a demonstration of Mr Buhari’s brutish leadership.
