No fewer than two youths were allegedly shot dead by a security guard attached to the Speaker of Oyo State House of Assembly, Adebo Ogundoyin in New Eruwa, Eruwa in the Ibarapa East Local Government Area of the state during the local government election on Saturday, SaharaReporters learnt on Sunday.

The death of the victims led to a mob attack on the vehicle of the Speaker, which was set ablaze.

The name of one of the victims was given as Ebenezer, a security officer at The Ibarapa Polytechnic, Eruwa.

Some online reports said on Saturday that the victims were hit by stray bullets from the guns of Customs officials.

But a resident of Eruwa, Gbolahan Tunde told SaharaReporters on phone on Sunday that the claims were wrong.

He challenged the state government to say the truth.

Gbolahan who said he didn't know the identity of the other victim insisted that he was sure that there were two casualties.

He said Ebenezer was working with Polaris Bank before he started working at the polytechnic as security officer, adding that the sporadic shooting by Ogundoyin's security agents led to the death of the victims.

Another source who spoke on condition of anonymity alleged that a member of the House of Representatives, Yinka Taiwo and some armed men attacked some residents of Lanlante.

"That was the first time I would see this kind of war in the same party. I heard they killed two in Eruwa but they didn't kill anyone here in Lanlante. But Yemi Taiwo was on rampage here.

"There was no election here because people didn't come out. They cannot tell me that 1,000 people voted in Lanlante. Our people were just looking at them here. It will be better if INEC (Independent National Electoral Commission) conducts subsequent council elections," he said.

Meanwhile, the chairmanship candidates of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in 32 out of 33 local government areas of the state for the Saturday's council elections in the state have been declared winners.

The Oyo State Independent Electoral Commission (OYSIEC) which conducted the election announced that the results of the election were postponed in the Ido Local Government Area of the state, due to omission of the logo of the Zenith Labour Party (ZLP) on ballot papers in the council.

The chairman of OYSIEC, Aare Isiaka Olagunju (SAN), announced that apart from the entire Ido Local Government Area, where the election was rescheduled for May 29, fresh election will also be held in Ward Five of Ibarapa East, where the Returning Officer cancelled the entire votes cast following violence, and snatching and destruction of ballot boxes.

Olagunju explained that Ibarapa East has 10 wards but that there were no major issues in nine wards.

Meanwhile, the State Secretary of PDP, Wasiu Adeleke, has described the election as victory for the loyal supporters of the party.

Adeleke said, "This election is a clear testament that our party is loved and our major responsibility is to maintain and sustain the love of the people.

"I pray that Almighty God will give us all the wisdom, strength and capacity to do well for our people and lead them appropriately. PDP in Oyo State is proud of you and once again, we say congratulations to you all."

Leaders of the All Progressives Congress in the South-West have expressed strong opposition to calls for the separation of Nigeria.

They urged those indulging in such to desist forthwith, while they renewed their belief in the unity, stability and sustainability of the country.

Bola Ahmed Tinubu

This is coming amid calls for the creation of a Yoruba Nation in the South-Western part of the country.

The APC leaders made their positions known in a communique issued after their meeting in Lagos on Sunday, Punch reported.

According to reports, those who attended the meeting include the National Leader of the APC, Bola Tinubu, South-West APC governors; and Speaker of the House of Representatives, Femi Gbajabiamila.

Part of the communique read, “The leaders commiserate with and condole the President and Commander-in-Chief, President Muhammadu Buhari, the military authorities, families of the Chief of Army Staff and other officers who died, and indeed the entire nation over last Friday’s tragic plane crash in Kaduna.

“They express their strong opposition to separatist agitations and hate speeches. While urging those indulging in such to desist forthwith, they renew their belief in the unity, stability and sustainability of the country.

“We note with significant concern the security situation in the country. Terrorism and violent criminality threaten many areas, adversely affecting the lives and livelihoods of too many innocent and peace-loving Nigerians.

“While mindful of the resource and other constraints facing the nation, we urge the federal government to continue to make the necessary expenditures and allocate sufficient resources to enable the military and security agencies to tackle the difficult security challenges confronting us.

“For Nigeria to overcome these challenges, we must do so with unity of purpose and action. The desire for peace and the chance for a prosperous and just society is universal and transcends all regional, religious or ethnic divisions.

“Sadly, many public figures have made statements that spark division and undermine the needed unity of purpose. We urge the government at all levels, security agencies, and public leaders across the country to do everything possible to prevent tension so that we sustain the necessary unity to defeat these challenges to our national security. All responsible Nigerians must speak and act in a manner that strengthens our common cause against these common threats to our collective peace, justice and development.

“We restate our abhorrence of violence as a means to achieve either political or economic power and influence. We strongly condemn the violence of any form in any part of the country, regardless of the ethnic or regional identity of the perpetrators of the violence or the victims. Government must do all it can to protect potential victims and to assist those who have previously been victimised by terrorism or widespread banditry.”

The South-West APC leaders, however, declared support for federalism and endorsed the position of the Southern Governors regarding ranching taken in Asaba, Delta State on May 11, 2021.

The communique added, “We hold to the view that true federalism where more power and resources are allocated to the states will be an essential part in strengthening society and improving democratic governance so that we beat the present challenges but also engender durable peace and security.

“True federalism and the reallocation of resources and authority that comes with it will empower the states to solve localised issues before they spread and transform into national ones. In addition to mitigating political competition for control of the national government, greater federalism will empower grassroots economic development and political reforms that will stand as bulwarks against the terrorism and criminality now experienced in too many parts of the nation. A hallmark of this enhanced federalism will be the establishment of state police forces.

“We endorse the position of the Southern Governors taken at their May 11, 2021 summit in Asaba, Delta State, regarding ranching. We do so because such a decision will lessen tensions between farmers and herders while also helping the long-term economic viability of both the farming and herding communities.”

Troops of the Nigerian Air Force have rescued scores of victims kidnapped by victims in the Igabi Local Government Area of Kaduna State.

In a statement on Sunday, the Kaduna State Commissioner for Internal Security and Home Affairs, Samuel Aruwan, said the bandits invaded Najaja and Kerawa villages in the Igabi Local Government Area and abducted several people, mostly women.

Aruwan stated that while the bandits were trying to escape with their victims, a Nigerian Air Force fighter jet on aerial patrol quickly spotted their location and was able to rescue the kidnap victims.

The armed bandits, according to the Commissioner, were moving with the large number of women kidnapped from Ungwan Najaja when the air platforms traced them to the outskirts of the village.

On sighting the jet and conscious of air interdictions following warning shots, the bandits scampered into the forest and abandoned the women.

The bandits had earlier injured one Hamza Ibrahim while moving out of the village with the kidnapped women, many of whom were housewives.

In another sad case, Bandits have killed the personal driver of the Emir of Birnin Gwari, one Nasiru Muhammad, Channels TV reports.

Security agencies reported that the armed bandits attacked the Buruku-Birnin Gwari Road and Nasiru Muhammad was shot dead around Ungwan Yako forest along the route.

Reacting to the incident, Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai expressed sadness at the killing of the Emir’s driver and sent condolences to the royal father and the family of the deceased, while praying for the repose of his soul.

The National Association of Seadogs (Pyrates Confraternity) has declared the Attorney-General and Minister of Justice, Mr Abubakar Malami (SAN) as unfit to remain in office after drawing false equivalence between open grazing of cattle in southern Nigeria and selling of spare parts in northern Nigeria.

The NAS Capoon, Mr Abiola Owoaje in a statement titled “Malami unfit to remain AGF,” described his comparison as “irresponsible and shameful”.

He said it is disheartening that Mr. Malami, the Chief Law Officer, could make utterances capable of inciting Nigerians against one another, whilst making an incompetent argument on a point of law.

While arguing that selling of spare parts does not involve bloodletting like open grazing of cattle which has been witnessed in different parts of the country, Owoaje said thousands of Nigerians have been killed and displaced from their homes and land as a result of open grazing.

The statement said, “Section 41 of the Nigerian constitution enshrines the freedom of movement of humans but this cannot be translated into the unrestrained right to roam and trespass by animals and their herders, or their criminal proxies.

"It is noteworthy to point out that as far back as April 2018, a three-man sub-committee on farmers/herders clashes, of the National Economic Council (NEC) headed by Governor Dave Umahi, had recommended the ban on open grazing." "The NEC had accepted the

recommendation but is yet to be enforced. As the Chief Law Officer of the country with such a sectarian mindset, Mr. Malami, with his comments, has exposed himself as one of those frustrating the resolution of the farmers/herders crisis. He appears to be an agent of destabilisation, who has no place in the Federal Executive Council.

"His remarks are a disservice to his position as the Attorney-General, and the profession in which he has attained some prominence, and regrettably, an indication that he is no longer fit for the position he presently occupies.

"At a time the unity of this country has been badly shaken; and a period when impunity stalks the land, keeping Mr. Malami as the Attorney-General is a mockery of justice and fairness, and an assault on national cohesion. He should honourably resign his position, or be fired to save the Buhari government from further embarrassment.”

Pro-democracy and human rights group, Concerned Nigerians for the Protection of Human Rights and Rule of Law initiative has urged President Muhammadu Buhari to employ the services of independent air accident experts to investigate the cause of the Nigerian Air Force jet that killed the Chief of Army Staff, General Ibrahim Attahiru and others.

The group in a statement made available to journalists said the cause of the plane crash that claimed the lives of the Chief of Army Staff and other military chiefs must be thoroughly investigated by independent air accident experts.

The statement reads in part: “Our heartfelt condolences are with the families of the Chief of Army Staff, the Airforce crew and other generals who lost their lives in the ill-fated crash that occurred in Kaduna International Airport.

“We call on the president to launch an inquest into the cause of the crash that claimed the lives of some of our finest officers by employing the services of an independent air accident expert. It can not be a coincidence that three Nigerian Airforce jets have crashed in a space of 3 months. Something is fundamentally wrong somewhere and the onus is on the president to uncover this mysterious crashes.”

The group, through its convener, Deji Adeyanju, also stated that it appears the various security agencies have been compromised.

“We are worried that the security agencies may have been compromised. We have always condemned the idea of granting former Boko Haram fighters amnesty and the dire consequences of enlisting them into the army and other security forces.

“The cabinet of the president and our security agencies are filled with terrorist sympathisers. Unless the president rids his administration of these unscrupulous elements that have infiltrated his cabinet, the war against insurgency will continue to be a mirage.

“Moreover, we are calling on the president and the vice president to suspend every travelling activity by air pending the outcome of a comprehensive report on the numerous Airforce plane crashes by the independent air accident experts earlier recommended.”

The group prayed for the victims of the crash, including the galant officers who lost their lives fighting for Nigeria.

George Olufade, the father of Flt Lt Alfred Olufade, the pilot of the ill-fated aircraft that killed 11 military officers, including the Chief of Army Staff, Lt. Gen. Ibrahim Attahiru, said only prayers could sustain him as George was his only son.

The grieving father decried the state of military aircraft in the country and called on the authorities to overhaul the planes and focus on staff welfare.

Alfred got married three months ago amid pomp and circumstance.

George said, “It is devastating. I just need prayers for strength. I pray that God should hold us because he was my only son. He was very intelligent, generous, extremely humble, and dedicated to his duty. He was a giver and a lover of Christ.

“He was in the seminary before he eventually got into the military school.

“He was the only Airforce officer in my state. He was a special child. He graduated as the youngest in his set. When he wanted to join the military, I encouraged him from the beginning to the end because he had a passion for flying. I encouraged him and prayed for him.

“They should take care of their planes. Most of their planes are outdated and not properly taken care of. They stress their pilots, too. He just returned from Maiduguri and he had to fly again. They need to take care of their planes before they lose all their brilliant talents.

“Each time he was flying, he would tell me and I would pray for him. But this last one, he didn’t tell me. But God knows better. It has not been my prayer holding him, but God has been holding him.
