The Christian Association of Nigeria has fecilitated with the Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs and the Muslim faithful as they mark this year Eid-el-Kabir celebrations.

The Christian body noted that muslims in Nigeria should during the celebration pray for the country to come out of the many security challenges it is currently grappling with.

CAN enjoined the Muslim faithful to pray for the country to be able to overcome this myriad of challenges.

In a statement entitled, ‘Eid-el-Kabir: CAN Felicitates With Nigerian Muslim Ummah,’ signed by Daramola Bade Joseph, General Secretary of CAN said the Christian faithful in the country felicitate with them for being alive to witness this day and celebrate despite the menace of insecurity challenges in the country occasioned by the criminal activities of bandits, kidnappers, terrorists, killer herdsmen and other undesirable elements.

According to CAN, “Our governments at all levels should also be more mindful of the plights of the people whose lives and property have been under incessant attacks and threats as is the case in Kaduna State. It is becoming worrisome and of great concern to all and sundry.”

The statement explained that “the primary responsibility of any government is to protect lives and property under its care”, lamenting that many families are mourning and gnashing teeth during this occasion is an understatement.

CAN noted that Nigerians as a whole, Kaduna and some other states in particular are no longer sleeping with their two eyes closed because of the unending destruction of lives and property, asking that may God intervene in the situations of the country as soon as possible.

The statement pleaded for uncompromising efforts and support of our law enforcement officers and appealed to the Federal Government to provide a peaceful and conducive atmosphere for the celebrations of this great festival.

A Yoruba socio-cultural group, Voice of Reason (VoR) otherwise known as Ohun Agba, has condemned the clampdown on a Yoruba activist and freedom fighter, Sunday Adeyemo, aka Sunday Igboho by the Muhammadu Buhari government through the Department of State Services.

The group stated that it is both “provocative and unacceptable.”

The Voice of Reason in a statement reiterated its stance on restructuring of the country, stressing that the 2023 elections based on the 1999 constitution would be a farce without restructuring.

The group in the statement sent to SaharaReporters by its Chairman, Dr Olufemi Adegoke, also accused President Muhammadu Buhari of nepotism, adding that the pattern of appointments by the President did not reflect federal character and the diversity of the country.

“Our message is to our compatriots who are occupiers of political offices under the current regime and others in the dominant parties who intend to waste resources on another bid to be favoured with crumbs i.e tickets to contest the 2023 elections. The political parties have a timeless and do-nothing agenda that is patently obvious to the blind.

“The new Electoral Act with allegedly rigged provisions that are discordant to transparency and the bizarre allocation of polling units based on rigged population numbers in the North are further inklings of what awaits those that are undiscerning. We note and warn of the advent of another Maradonic era that culminated in the debacle and destruction of the unfulfilled MKO Abiola election.

“Without the restructuring of Nigeria, the quest for another round of elections based on the 1999 constitution is a ruse of epic proportions. It will be a tragedy to be fooled once again,” part of the statement read.

The Yoruba Intelligentsia group berated the President for the insecurity in the country.

“Events happening within the South West of Nigeria have shown that the Yoruba have become an endangered species in Nigeria, a country they invested their sweat and blood to achieve independence for, in 1960. Since 1947 till date, the Yoruba have responded to the surreptitious, premeditated and relentless pursuit of dominance over all other Nigerians by a small group of Northern oligarchs, by commending to all Nigerians the virtues of collective, inclusive, self-reliant and self-governing federating units to manage our diversity as a true Federation.

“We believe that the best route to a stable and productive democratic Federation for the nation is one in which none of its federating units seeks primacy over others. The Yoruba nation is the only region of the three initial federating regions at independence that up to date has never sought secession.

“The gathering storm articulated in calls for secession among a people who hitherto accepted being in opposition, and who when presented with opportunities to be part of government at the centre insisted instead on terms that would be in the best interest of the entire nation rather than opting for the opportunism of predatory participation, is incontrovertible evidence that the Nigerian contraption as presently operated as a Unitary system is neither viable nor sustainable.

“The emergence of Muhammadu Buhari in 2015 as President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria was achieved with the active collaboration of the 'Yoruba Mainstream', predicated on the covenant he made to restructure Nigeria. This was after his hitherto unprecedented losing streak in three successive presidential elections. However, after assuming office, everything has been done to decimate the Yoruba and other indigenous nations; to impede their growth and checkmate their advancement socially, politically and economically.

“It is a given that he is aware that the North has effectively given itself, through military interventions, veto power by various provisions embedded in the 1999 constitution, the false census figures and the distribution of local government boundaries across the country. The 1999 Constitution that was foisted on everyone by the military has, via that embedded veto power, subordinated the desires, aspirations and rights of the South to that of the Northern peoples. The votes of the Yoruba representatives along with those of others in the South and Middle Belt do not count on the floor of the National Assembly because of a preconceived gerrymandered lopsidedness, favouring some over the collective interests of all others.

“With the continuing unabashed implementation of the said fulanisation agenda of President Buhari's administration, these two tendencies will invariably coalesce into a unified goal for “self-government for the Yoruba Nation as soon as practicable”. We note and applaud the recent constructive articulation by another Fulani, a retired military officer, Colonel Abubakar Umar.

“Recently, the DSS executed an illegal midnight attack on the home of Chief Sunday Adeyemo Igboho in the Yoruba heartland that resulted in the death of two innocent citizens of Nigeria with the obvious intent to silence the renowned Yoruba freedom fighter. All right-thinking persons have condemned this descent into despotism. One can see the abysmal level to which the country has sunk. This is provocative and unacceptable to the Yoruba.

“In view of the foregoing, and in accord with the recent decision by the leaders of Niger Delta Region as conveyed by the Communique issued at the end of their June 25, 2021 meeting held at Port Harcourt, we also hereby call for a Consultative Forum of 'willing' Ethnic Nationalities to be held and concluded before October 01, 2021. The objective would be the negotiation of whatever residual relations are left between and among the peoples of Nigerian territory. The Forum should be structured to accommodate the representatives of any Nigerian nationality that is willing to attend.”

An autopsy conducted on a young girl, Jumoke Oyeleke, who was hit by a stray bullet during the Yoruba Nation rally in Lagos has been obtained by SaharaReporters.

According to the autopsy signed by Dr SS Soyemi of the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital, Ikeja, Jumoke’s death was caused by “Haemopericardium, disruption of the heart and lungs and missile injury to the chest.”

Hemopericardium refers to blood in the pericardial sac of the heart. It is clinically similar to a pericardial effusion, and, depending on the volume and rapidity with which it develops, may cause cardiac tamponade.

Agitators for Yoruba self-determination had on July 3 gathered at the Gani Fawehinmi Park in Ojota amid the presence of armed policemen and soldiers.

This was after the Lagos State Commissioner of Police, CP Hakeem Odumosu, had addressed newsmen at the venue, where he announced that no rally is allowed in the state. See Also Police Yoruba Nation Rally: 14-year-old Girl Killed By Stray Bullet In Lagos

However, his announcement was set aside by the agitators who flaunted their banners and chanted all sorts of slogans to express their determination towards the breakaway of the Yoruba group from Nigeria.

This displeased the security operatives at the venue who fired teargas canisters and used water cannons to disperse the crowd.

This didn’t deter the agitators who returned to their converging point and carried on from where they left off.

The next action from the security operatives had everyone at the rally scampering to safety as gunshots sounded from different directions. See Also News Police Demanded Over N200,000 For Autopsy, ‘Burial Expenses’ – Family Of Teenager Killed At Lagos Yoruba Nation Rally

When the situation became a bit calm, Jumoke, who was said to be displaying drinks at a shop close by, was seen lying in a pool of blood.

She was reported to have been hit by a stray bullet when security operatives were dispersing the crowd at the rally.

The level of insecurity in Edo State especially the Benin/Auchi Road bordering the three senatorial districts in the state is unacceptable, the African Action Congress (AAC) has said.

AAC in a statement by its state Chairman, Comrade Hafiz Lawal, condemned Governor Godwin Obaseki over what it described as “lackluster performance.”

While expressing sadness over the worrisome killings and kidnappings in some parts of the state, the party asked Obaseki to show Edo people what his government has done in the last four years.

The statement partly reads, “There is billions of naira on security votes coming to Edo state on monthly basis that is never unaccounted for. We must begin to engage and question the government on quagmires like the one we are currently experiencing in Edo.

“We challenge the Obaseki-led government to show Edo people what it has done in the past 4 years. We urged him to intensify more effort to eradicate kidnapping and restore peace in the affected areas throughout the state.

“Infrastructure on the other part has remained unattended to. The development in a state would remain a far cry so long there is no conscious effort at investing in intellectual and physical infrastructure. The leadership of Governor Obaseki should initiate a drive that will see his campaign promises come to pass.”

Unknown gunmen have reportedly killed at least 10 people in some villages in the Guma Local Government Area of Benue State.

Confirming the incident, the Chairman of Guma LGA, Caleb Aba, told newsmen in Makurdi on Monday that four of the victims were killed in Mbabai council ward and three others in Ndzorov council.

Gunmen

Aba, who blamed the killings that involved two humanitarian workers on suspected herders, noted that he was baffled by the resurgence of attacks on his people since there were no issues reported earlier between the villagers and the herders.

He said that the remains of the three people killed in Ndzorov which included two aid workers were evacuated by the operatives of Operation Whirl Stroke (OPWS).

The suspected armed herders had on Sunday allegedly killed six people and two aid workers under the employ of 360HSCD, a non-governmental organisation working on HIV/AIDs testing and counseling in Benue State.

Eyewitnesses noted that the two bodies of the aid workers were later recovered by their organisation from the troops of Operation Whirl Stroke.

According to some villagers, the aid workers were allegedly first seized by the gunmen before they were eventually killed.

They stated that when they called the telephone lines of the abducted aid workers, their captors who responded confirmed the killings and insisted that the killings would continue until Governor Samuel Ortom repealed the open grazing prohibition and ranching establishment law of 2017.

The family of Jumoke Oyeleke, the teenager killed during the ‘Yoruba Nation’ rally in Lagos has narrated how men of the Lagos State Police Command demanded over N200,000 as ‘burial expenses’ from them.

On July 3, the police shot into the air and fired teargas as they dispersed ‘Yoruba Nation’ agitators at Gani Fawehinmi Park.

Amid the ensuing melee, the 14-year-old was found dead in a pool of blood after a stray bullet from police gunshots was said to have hit her.

The police however denied the culpability of its officers in the death of the girl while the state government ordered an investigation into the matter. See Also CRIME Lagos Governor, Sanwo-Olu Orders Investigation Into Killing Of 14-Year-Old Girl During Yoruba Nation Rally

One of the top lawyers from Oyo State, Bolaji Agoro, shortlisted to become a judge, is dead.

According to witnesses, Agoro performed well at the screening for new judges and was awaiting his confirmation until he died.

He was said to have slumped on Sunday, while observing Ishai prayer and died in his chamber jointly managed by him and his younger brother who is also a lawyer and former member of the House of Representatives, Lanre Agoro.

His death came less than four months after the death of Adetunji Gbadegesin, Solicitor-General and Permanent Secretary of the Oyo State Ministry of Justice and eight months after the demise of the Chief Registrar of the Oyo State High Court, Alhaja Fatima Badru.

It was gathered that the trio of Badru, Gbadegesin and Agoro were the top three shortlisted candidates for the position of judges in the state.

The remains of late Agoro were buried in accordance with Islamic rites at his Igboho’s home town yesterday.

In May, the Muslim community in the state raised alarm over alleged plans to replace the names of late Badru and Gbadegesin, two High Court Judge nominees who were Muslims with Christian nominees.

Hundreds of Nigerians, particularly from the South-East region stormed the Kenyan Embassy in Dublin, Ireland, in protest over the East African country’s arrest and extradition of the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, Nnamdi Kanu, to Nigeria.

The protesters with placards sang solidarity songs, chanting, “Kenya, betrayers, Kenya, shame.”

“This is the Embassy of Kenya in Dublin. Africa betraying Africa; it is a pity. For betraying Nnamdi Kanu, they will not know good. IPOB members are here to protest,” one of the protesters said in a video obtained by SaharaReporters.

“Kenya government are liars. Why continue to deny? If you have betrayed him, say the truth. Don’t continue to deny. You think Nnamdi Kanu would not say who betrayed him? He says. You think we don’t know. We do,” another protester yelled.

Although the Kenya authorities have yet to own up to the arrest of Kanu, the IPOB leader had on July 7 confirmed in an interview with his lawyers that he was arrested and tortured for days in Kenya.

SaharaReporters had on July 7 reported that Kanu recounted his experience in Kenya while speaking with his lawyers, saying he was “mercilessly beaten and tortured” in the East African country before his extradition to Nigeria.

“There was a clear collaboration between the Kenya government and the Nigerian government and I am happy that they are now denying the fact that Kanu was arrested in there.

“But by the time we finish with them at the International Criminal Court, they will never remain the same. He was arrested at the airport there and he was taken to an unknown residence. He was subjected to inhuman treatment.

“Kanu was tortured, maltreated and mercilessly beaten, as confirmed by him to us. After spending eight days in their illegal custody, they now beckoned to the Nigerian government. Kanu was lifeless and unconscious by the time they were bringing him to Nigeria.

“To tell you the level of their conspiracy and the desperation to get him, they brought him here on a Sunday and the federal government is fully aware that I am his legal counsel.

“He was brought into the country and inflicted with several injuries and a he is having a number of medical issues today. It was at the behest of the Federal government that Kenya was doing those things. This is against all international laws. We are going to address an international court at that level,” the lawyer had said.

The World Igbo Congress, a pressure group, has declared to stage a global protest on Wednesday against the continued detention of Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra.

According to the statement signed by its Chairman of the Board of Directors, Prof. Anthony Ejiofor, the slated universal demonstration will also alert the world of the incessant killings of the ethnic nationalities of the Southern Kaduna and South-West region of Nigeria dominated by Christians.

Nnamdi Kanu

WIC Public Relations Officer, Basil Onwukwe, in a statement, on Monday, said that the worldwide protest will also serve as a demand for the immediate release of Kanu, who was arrested by the Nigeria government from Kenya and currently being detained in the custody of the Department for State Service in Abuja.

Onwukwe specified that the protest rallies were long overdue because Christians all over Nigeria today live under the danger of the shoot-at-sight directive by the Nigerian government for kicking against the lopsided behaviour of the government.

“World Igbo Congress is using the protest to alert the international community to stop any agreements or assistance to Nigeria that overtly or covertly has the potential to enable the looming genocide through acts of government and the Foreign Office.

“We also request for an immediate release of Nnamdi Kanu who was recently illegally arrested by the Nigerian government in connivance with the government of Kenya. He is the leader of IPOB. Demanding fairness and true leadership of his people is not a crime,” WIC stated.

According to Onwukwe, “WIC will continue the pursuit of the referendum because it is the inalienable right of indigenous people of the world to self-determination like recently happened in Britain (Brexit) and Scotland to determine our peaceful state of actualisation.”

A Federal High Court sitting in Lagos State on Monday declined to make an order of status quo ante that would have suspended the local government elections in Lagos scheduled for Saturday, July 24, 2021.

Justice Chukwujekwu Aneke rather adjourned till November 29, proceedings in the suit filed by 11 political parties.

File photo used to illustrate story.

Justice Chukwujekwu Aneke gave the ruling after upholding the argument of counsel to the Lagos State Independent Electoral Commission (LASIEC), Mr Kemi Pinheiro, SAN.

The 11 parties are Alliance for Social Democrats; All Grand Alliance Party; Change Advocacy Party; Mega Party of Nigeria; Progressive People’s Alliance; Save Nigeria Congress; We The People’s of Nigeria; Young Democratic Party; Advanced Congress of Democrats and Mass Movement of Nigeria.

Joined as first to third defendants/respondents in the suit numbered FHC/L/CS/569/21 are LASIEC; Lagos Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC)

The plaintiffs' grouse is that LASIEC allegedly failed to register them for the election.

At the resumption of proceedings, Monday, other political parties including the African Action Congress (AAC), African Peoples Movement (APM) and BOOT informed the court of their intention to join as plaintiffs.

Responding, Pinheiro prayed the court to adjourn proceedings till after the annual vacation of the court because, among others, the intending parties who said they had filed a notice to join the suit, had yet to serve him and until that was done, the case could not go on.

He argued further that the failure of any party to comply with the law guiding the issue of service would rob the court of jurisdiction to entertain the case because "service is very fundamental before a case can be properly adjudicated on."

When the plaintiffs' counsel, Mr Taiwo Alabi, suggested that given the development, it was reasonable that the court should issue an order of status quo ante bellum I.e parties should stay action until the determination of the case pending in court, Pinheiro opposed him.

He submitted that Alabi's offer was a trap "which the court must not fall for" adding that the Appeal Court had stated on different occasions that the court should not entertain that type of approach.

"How can the plaintiff in the face of various applications for joinder filed by different parties which are yet to be served on me, and a motion challenging the jurisdiction of the court from entertaining the case filed by us, be seeking the order of status quo?

"I pray the court adjourns further proceedings in this case till after the annual vacation of the court which is starting on the 26th of July," Pinheiro added.

Granting his application, Justice Aneke adjourned till November 29 for the hearing of all applications.

He advised the plaintiffs to approach the vacation judge during vacation.
