The policemen fled the scene immediately after causing the accident.

Residents told SaharaReporters that the policemen are attached to Ijapo Divisional Police Station in Akure.

"This caused the vehicle to veer off the road, causing the driver to hit his head on the windshield.

"The man was badly injured and was rushed to the hospital while the vehicle got damaged."

Rights group, Amnesty International, has called on the Nigerian Government to ensure it provides health workers in the frontline of COVID-19 response with Personal Protective Equipment they need to attend to patients.

The call follows an announcement by government that 40 health workers tested positive for COVID-19 in Nigeria.

In a statement on Friday by Osai Ojigho, Director Amnesty International Nigeria, the group said health workers risked being exposed to COVID-19, stigmatisation, separation from their families, mental health and other concerns.

The statement reads, “Across Nigeria, health workers are facing extremely difficult and unsafe conditions of work, such as shortages of personal protective equipment, dilapidated and overstretched health facilities, unfair remuneration and harassment by security forces.

“Health workers have been describing the difficulties they face and the danger they confront to secure the health and lives of people in Nigeria. What the government must guarantee is their protection. It is unacceptable that they continue to be put at risk."

Amnesty International said it interviewed some health workers, who raised concerns that they were working without adequate protection and in very difficult conditions.

Health workers are increasingly facing harassment from securities agents despite being granted exemption from the lockdown order as essential workers.

In April, doctors at the Federal Medical Centre, Asaba, Delta State, embarked on a strike over the harassment of health workers by security agents, the group said.

It called on the Nigerian Government to protect health workers and ensure the treatment of those already infected.

The Northern Governor's Forum has resolved to continue its deportation of children under Islamic clerics better known as almajiris.

The governors also agreed to impose inter-state border curfews to stop the movement of people from one state to another in trucks as part of efforts to stop the spread of Coronavirus.

Makut Simon Macham, Director of Press and Public Affairs to the governor of Plateau State, in a statement on Friday said the move will stop the spread of COVID-19 in Northern states.

Macham said the forum reviewed issues such as the request for more COVID-19 testing centres in the North which are grossly inadequate and decided to purchase mobile testing vans which they believe will facilitate testing in the rural areas.

It reads, "The Forum also expressed deep appreciation to President Muhammadu Buhari for his quick intervention in Kano State because of the spike in the number of COVID-19 infections recently.

"On the issue of inter-state border closure, the Northern governors expressed serious concern that despite their efforts, the borders are still being compromised and more illegal routes are being created which is giving rise to a more inter-state transfer of COVID-19.

"They also noted that some of the trucks transporting goods are also used in smuggling people across states in violation of movement regulations.

"They, therefore, decided to close all borders from 6pm to 7am to all trucks carrying goods so as to enable proper scrutiny and examination the following day, which is difficult to achieve in the night when most of the infractions happen.

"They also agreed to increase the use of vigilante groups, neighbourhood watch, and traditional rulers in enforcing the border closures.

"The governors noted that the exercise has commenced and is going on well except for some few logistic challenges, which are being addressed, between governors of originating and receiving states.

"They also agreed that almajiris sent from one state to another should be profiled, tested, and accompanied by state officials and their alaramas (teachers) to facilitate the process of settling in."

Yoruba social-cultural group, Afenifere, has backed a move by Osun State to deport some Northern youth from Zamfara State, who sneaked into Osun despite the lockdown.

Mr Yinka Odumakin, Secretary-General of Afenifere, in an interview with SaharaReporters, said the state was right to take the action considering the ongoing battle with Coronavirus.

He stated that some Northern states were also deporting youths back to their original states within the region.  Yinka Odumakin

The Osun State Government had raised the alarm over the influx of youths, mostly from Zamfara in recent days.

The Northern youth gained entrance into Osun State by hiding in trucks conveying essential goods.

Special Adviser to Zamfara governor on Public Enlightenment, Media and Communications, Zailani Bappa, condemned the deportation, claiming that the Zamfara youth were Nigerian citizens, who could reside in any state in the country.

Odunmakin however, said there was nothing wrong with the deportation.

He said, “If there are people who are hindrances in Osun State, I do not think that they need to do profiling before they take necessary action, especially in this period that we are.

“Even all over the North, youths who are roaming about aimlessly are being round-up and taken back to their states of origin within the North and all the states that have done such thing did not announce their decision.”

He said the move should not generate friction between the two states, adding that Zamfara State Government would deport anybody making suspicious movement in its state.

He said, “I am sure that the governor of Zamfara, if he finds strange youth in the state at this stage that we are would take necessary actions that need to be taken. He would not be announcing that he wants to take any youth out of the state.

“It’s not a matter of states fighting; it’s just a fact that when you find strange people who are not members of the community, or communities members who return, you have to be inquisitive.”

A federal high court in Lagos has struck out a suit by the Muhammad Shitta-Bey family of Lagos seeking to recover a N1,275,351,167bn judgment debt from Great Nigeria Insurance Plc, the Central Bank of Nigeria and four other banks.

The four are: Wema Bank Plc, First Bank Plc, United Bank for Africa Plc and Polaris Bank Plc, in a suit marked FHC/L/CS/180/2020.

Justice Oluremi Oguntoyinbo on Wednesday, April 30, found no evidence that judgment debtor/applicant Great Nigeria Insurance and the five other garnishees owed the Shitta-Bey family the sum as judgment debt.

The family, represented by 11 members on February 25, 2020, approached the court, claiming that the sum was debt due and owed to them by the Great Nigeria Insurance Plc following a consent judgment.

It secured a garnishee order attaching the sum domiciled in the garnishee banks.

The court directed the banks to show cause why the order should not be made absolute against them.

The insurance firm and banks filed a March 6 Motion on Notice, praying the court to dismiss the suit for being an abuse of court process and to set aside the garnishee order nisi.

They contended that the family concealed and/or misrepresented material facts in securing the garnishee order and that it applied for the order while also enforcing the same judgment at the High Court of Lagos State.

Upholding the insurance firm and banks’ argument, Justice Oguntoyinbo held, “I have carefully considered the said paragraphs of the consent judgment. I cannot find any amount of money mentioned in the said paragraphs of the consent judgment.

“What is mentioned therein is that the Judgment Creditors shall be entitled to 40% / 45% of the Gross Annual Income derived by the Judgment Debtor/Applicant from the demised property less some charges.

“Since this court has already made an order attaching the said sums in the hands of the garnishee banks, it seems to me that the proper order to make in the circumstances is to discharge the said order nisi made by this court.

“I, therefore, hold that the order nisi made on the 25th day of February 2020, attaching the sum of N1,275, 351,167.00 in the hands of the garnishee banks is hereby discharged, and these garnishee proceedings is accordingly struck out.”

The middle-aged woman was said to have hired the motorcycle rider from Ajagba to a nearby farm settlement with the aim of purchasing kegs of palm oil.

But the suspect allegedly took the pregnant woman to another route under the pretence that he was going to help her get cheap palm oil.

The victim explained that Omogunwa drove her into a lonely path and suddenly stopped by the road before dragging her into the bush.

She said the suspect strangled her and also dispossessed her of her mobile phone with sum of N150,000 before raping her until she became unconscious. The victim was strangled.

She said, "He almost raped me to death, but when he discovered that I was already unconscious, he quickly ran away."

A family source, who confirmed the incident, said the pregnant woman was found in the bush by a search party.

"It was when the family could not see her on time that they immediately organised a search party for her.

"They later found her where she was lying. She was too weak and was already injured while struggling to crawl to the road.

"It took 48 hours for her to regain consciousness. She lost the pregnancy as a result of excessive bleeding," the source said.

Confirming the incident, the Ahaba of Ajagba, Oba Adesayo Ajibade, said the action of the motorcycle rider had dire consequence for him and the community.

He said, "It would result to poor yield and famine in the town unless the offenders appease the gods of the land."

Police sources in the state told SaharaReporters that they were currently on the trail of the suspect.

In recent times, Prof Wole Soyinka has been at the receiving end of arrows from those who hate his guts and his intellect. Those who are discomforted by his achievements. Those who are having nightmares about his pride in his heritage and his aversion for ignorance and incompetence. Those who felt threatened by his solidness and their own destitution. This crowd include the Islamic fundamentalist and irredentist, Adamu Adamu; the hollow-minded mouth piece of misery, Garba Shehu; the mudslinger Mahmud Jega; the contused-minded Mohammed Haruna, and discordant Sam Nda-Isaiah.

Each of them had taken turns to attack, insult, abuse and disrespect WS at different times. But the focus of this piece would only be limited to the garish and gaudy guffaw of Adamu Adamu and that sentry of sorrow, Shehu Garba. Please, note that this is not to say that our own WS could not be criticized, no, far from it. He could and should be, just as he could and should be defended when the need arises, as in this case.

After reading the vituperation of the Azere born Adamu Adamu on WS, it was difficult to imagine the putrid level of his envy and inferiority complex. In a shameless advertisement of his own inadequacy and mediocrity, he breast-stroked in balderdash as he oozed with effluvial prejudice. To imagine that he was partly educated at Columbia University, one of the most prestigious institutions in the world, his outburst was an elucidation of crass ignorance, an edification of deodorized gibberish and an irradiation of repulsion to sanity.  The author, Remi Oyeyemi

In his piece, Adamu Adamu had used his attack on WS as a veil for his unguarded exudation of his hatred for the Yorùbá Nation, its civilization and every glory that the Yorùbá represents. Charging from a mind cocooned in Islamic putridity, Judaist odiousness, he assaulted and derided Yorùbá traditional ways of life, beliefs and culture, using obnoxious words from his colonised mind like "paganism", "heathenism", "idolatrous" among several others.

Accusing WS of "an unfounded cultural superiority complex", he unwittingly showcased the despicability of his own lack of self-esteem, absence of belief in self and loathing of his own ancestry. He, with giddy gusto and a howling hollowness, elevated with an obvious redacted self animus, Judaism above Yorubaism. He showed, albeit unwittingly, his own cultural vacuity, absence of originality of cosmological extrapolations in his heritage. What a travesty! And a pity!

Why Adamu is miffed by the pride and delightfulness of WS in his Káãro Oòjíire Cultural grandeur, splendour, dignity and glory is actually a reason for curiosity. Is it because of his perceived worthlessness of his own heritage? Is it because he has nothing of substance to point at as the contributions of his forefathers to civilization? Is Adamu bothered by the aridity in and or parlousness of his own cosmological inheritance?

If this is the case, how is this the fault of WS or the Yorùbá people who are very proud of their own heritage in all ramifications? How and why is WS' pride in his Káãro Oòjíire culture so discomforting to him? Why is he having nightmares about Yorùbá people loving their language, singing in it and dancing to their own Yorùbá songs? If he perceived daftness in his own ancestors and aridity of relevance as well as philosophical substance in what they bequeathed to him, how is that the fault of WS and the Káãro Oòjíire Nation?

Adamu further self immolated by glorifying in the religious imperialism that has victimised his mind and thought process by accusing WS of "a hubristic pagan worldview," suggesting that the faith and belief of WS was unacceptable to his colonised and Islamized mind. By extension, Adamu not only rubbished his own forefathers, he was laboriously engaged in efforts to pull WS' pride, faith and belief in his own ancestors and heritage in the malodorous mud of superciliousness.

Adamu's edification of Islamic boondoggle and rubbishing of Yorùbá beliefs was an attestation to the power and impact of religious imperialism. An imperialism that has derobed him mentally and cinctured his thinking process. His shackled mind marinates in poisoned pool of peonage and obsequiousness to Judaism and Islamism. That his piece was an expression of cultural inferiority garbed in truculent and tortured inability to discover self-worth was self-evident.

Inspired by the bitterness engendered by his self-emptiness, Adamu foolishly claimed that the Káãro Oòjíire's tradition and culture "is for a world that is past and gone - and better forgotten." What an arrogance of ignorance! What a mendacious insolence! Someone should educate him that among many cultures/faiths that have spread beyond their immediate environment of origin without any use of force, without any shedding of blood, but only on the strength of their substance and relevance is the Yorùbá culture/faith that is now practiced on several continents.

Could Adamu say the same of his Judaism inspired Islam? A faith, which he adopted for lack of substantive bequeathment from his daft ancestors, and which has been an omen of woes, portent of tears and harbinger of tragedies to humanity for several centuries? A faith that has inflicted untold hardship, suffering and destruction on civilization through endless Jihads, hitching and hobbling our humanity with its spread of undiluted hatred and consecrated distrust. Yet, in his unrestrained exudation of inanities and glowing display of Intellectual charlatanism, Adamu was elevating such a rabid nonsense over and above Yorùbá's philosophy of life that edifies and glorifies humanity!

Calling Yoruba Ifa divinations a "mumbo jumbo", words that denote "meaninglessness", I dare to ask Adamu Adamu and his fellow travellers in Islamic terrorism, the value of their Qurannic claptraps, gobbledygook, hocus-pocus and obscurantism? A faith that advocates the subversion of womanhood and suppression of intellect, freedom and liberty of others. Without violence, Islam would not have gone anywhere because of its evidential emptiness as compared to Ifa Olókun a s'òrò d'ayò, of Káárò Oòjíire that is obviously more substantive. That is the attestation of History.

But for Adamu and his fellow myopic travellers, History is of no use. History is not relevant. History belongs in a garbage. As a Minister of Education, he had no qualms spearheading a policy that sought to eradicate the teaching of History in all High Schools across the Country, before he was vehemently opposed and stared down. Because he had no History, he was trying to deprive others who have History. Adamu's Arabised and Islamized mind was shrouded from all ‘Africanness’ and his own History, his own roots, his heritage, if he had any.

Like a headless body, Adamu, has been sauntering around the corridors of power in Nigeria, stumbling and bumbling, igniting ignorance. His mission was to titillate the country with a tapestry of tinted and tainted truth draped in dumbness, denseness and darkness. He wanted to turn the children into goats without any affinity with and to their past simply because he has none. He has no problem with Arabic Studies but his aversion to History has become legendary.

If Adamu was in misery and agony over the emptiness of his own culture and vacuity of what was bequeathed to him, he should do more research into History. Hopefully, he would be better instructed and able to stop his slavish adoration of Arabism and Islamism. If he is unable to find anything noteworthy or edifying to his ancestors, that would be his own cup of tea. He should not expect our own WS, to manifest the same symptoms of nihility and boorish blankness.

The fact that the Yorùbá people are very tolerant of different faiths in their milieu should not be construed as a licence to attack, ridicule and deride their traditional faiths, their cultural beliefs and their ways of life. Live and let live. Let WS practise his faith. Allow us to practice our traditional faiths as we desire.  Let the Yorùbá speak their language. Allow us to sing our songs in our language and dance to them as we like. Again, live and let live. Someone needs to educate Adamu Adamu on the value of that precept.

As to Garba Shehu, who by my own definition, is a sentry of sorrow, and who had derided WS as not being a "medical professor" and only a writer, he (Shehu) is a product of an impudent Northern elite, bitter about their civilised confusion and the contusion of and in their civilization. He has no idea whether he is an Arab or an African. Like Adamu Adamu, he has no clear identity. Their Arabised minds detest anything and everything authentically African. They think they are free when indeed, they are in chains.

Thus, when they encounter a personality like WS imbued with innate self-esteem and confidence, with a definite, concrete, identifiable identity, they become jittery, envious, defensive and belligerent. In their belligerence, they become uncoordinated and act as well as speak incoherently, becoming discourteous and discombobulated. Since Shehu and Adamu are unable to fathom the nature of interventions by WS in the contraption called Nigeria and in obliviousness, all they could do was to drag down something that is far above their heads.

Delving into the "qualifications" of WS as being in "English Literature" was very gratuitous and deliberately aimed at diminishing a distinguished person and his accomplishments. One hoped that Shehu would follow up his description of WS' qualifications by telling us that of his ‘certificateless’ principal, Mohammed Buhari, in politics and administration. This, using his myopic criteria, would have help the rest of us to justify the travesty of their presidency.

With their hateful and envious minds against WS and his deep affinity with his Yorùbá roots, it is evident that they are thoroughly agonised by a vacuous past of their forebears. WS is not to be blamed for that. The Yorùbá people are not to be blamed for that. And neither could anyone change History of a great civilization like that of Káárò o jìíre. History never dies and the truth is always constant.

The Nigeria Police Force has said it will enforce the curfew announced by President Muhammadu Buhari in Lagos State with compassion as part of efforts to ease the lockdown put in place to stop the spread of Coronavirus.

Spokesperson for the police in Lagos, Bala Elkana, told SaharaReporters on Friday that the move was targeted at preventing rights violations.

He said, "We are hoping that residents would have little excuses for flouting the curfew since they have the whole day to get everything that they need so they can be back home at night.

"We have made arrangements and our deployment is intact, our men are on the ground and have not been withdrawn to make sure that the hours of the curfew are respected.

“The normal patrols like was seen during the lockdown has not altered, the rapid response squad are also well positioned to accommodate the number of people who will come out."

Elkana said the police had made it compulsory for its officers to appear in public in face masks as well maintain social distancing when dealing with members of the public.

He added, "We have enforced the use of face mask among our officers when they are in public and the government has also pronounced it as compulsory for everyone coming out to make sure they use it.

“We have also provided hand sanitisers to our officers and water with soap at the entrance of every police station for people coming to wash their hands properly.

"The aim is to protect our men who are frontliners. They are also to maintain social distance talking to members of the public.

"Embarking on persuasive enforcement is the most important thing for us to do, it has helped greatly to reduce the number of human rights violation cases recorded during the enforcement of the lockdown."

He called on officers to show compassion in the enforcement of guidelines laid down by the President while encouraging members of the public to report impropriety of rouge officers.

"Now that we are moving to the next phase, we are all in it together, so our men are well informed to enforce with compassion.

"Members of the public are enjoined to use their face mask for public good.”

In the latest daily update by the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control, Kano State recorded more cases than Lagos for the first time on Thursday.

The state also overtook the Federal Capital Territory in total confirmed cases of COVID-19 in the country.

While Kano recorded 80 cases, Lagos had 45. This latest figure has prompted concerns as Nigerians on social media are faulting Governor Abdullahi Ganduje of Kano State for not taking proactive steps to contain the spread of Coronavirus in the state.  Kano State Governor Ganduje

Amid the growing concerns, Ganduje had appealed to President Muhammadu Buhari to lift the lockdown in the state because of Ramadan.  See Also Islam Kano Governor, Ganduje, Asks Buhari To Relax Lockdown Over Ramadan

A Twitter user, @Bamangaibrahim, described the governor as a monumental failure for not showing leadership qualities in handling the outbreak.

“This is exactly why you need strong leadership. Ganduje is a monumental failure because he failed to show leadership in the handling of this pandemic.

“He chose to put politics and money ahead of the lives of Kano people. Sickening,” @Bamangaibrahim tweeted.

@OgbeniDipo said, “80 (cases) in Kano. Even if President Buhari opens up Lagos and Abuja, they should lock up Kano and keep the keys in Aso Rock for now. This is because the stories from Kano are shocking and disappointing.”

@AbdulMahmud01 said, “80 confirmed cases in one day in Kano? The fatalism of the hand washing and drinking dirty water challenge!”

@RMK_2023 said, “Kano Assembly has yet to do anything about the mass death and slow #COVID-19 response in Kano.

“They would have used the energy they used on Sanusi's impeachment to impeach Ganduje if they care about Kano people.”

@DrOlufunmilayo knocked Ganduje for asking the President to lift the order despite the increase in the cases recorded.

“By the way, Ganduje asked Buhari to relax the Kano lockdown so that people can do some Ramadan shopping.

“There are 80 cases in Kano. Kano now firmly in second place after Lagos. In two-weeks, Kano catches up and overtakes Abuja. I agree with Ganduje, please relax the lockdown,” @DrOlufunmilayo tweeted.

@Chindo004 said, “NCDC reported 204 cases and Kano is taking charge with 80 reported cases and there are people in Kano that do not believe this virus exists.”

@Dehkunle tweeted, “It’s now 80 in Kano in just one day. These numbers are coming in from the North and the only thing they’re concerned about is arresting Mubaraq Bala for blasphemy, not enough education and sensitization for these people.”

@ogundamisi tweeted, “@GovUmarGanduje needs help and I am not being sarcastic, no matter how we feel about his past, in the interest of the people of Kano said to be around 3,931,300, people need to advise him correctly on the handling of #COVID19. For Kano and our sake, he needs quality advice.”

@TaiwoStMichael2 said, “It amazes me that the Governor of Kano can be asking for a relaxation of the lockdown in his state because of Ramadan even when his people are still dropping dead like flies. Did Christians ask for a relaxation of the lockdown during Easter?”
