The governor of Anambra State, Willie Obiano, on Friday, joined some of his counterparts in the southern region of the country to sign the anti-open grazing bill into law.

The law was signed by Obiano only two weeks to the state governorship election billed for November 6.

Governor Obiano explained that the significance of the decision made by the state government to ban open grazing in the state was to enhance peaceful coexistence between farmers and the herders in Anambra.

According to him, the management of the crisis between farmers and herders has been a short-term measure and it has become necessary for the government to take a decisive action.

The governor stated that the law enforcement agencies have been directed to immediately commence the implementation of the law.

A chieftain of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), Garus Gololo, has bemoaned the failed road and Mambilla power projects despite a humongous budget of over N1.2trillion in the last five years of President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration.

Gololo’s reaction in a statement in Abuja on Friday disclosed that the amount was invested through the Ministry of Power during Babatunde Fashola’s time in road, and building projects of the Mambila Hydro Electricity Dam.

Both projects reportedly failed woefully in Taraba State.

Gololo called on Buhari to sack the minister and hand him over to the anti-graft agencies for prosecution, while accusing him of failing to justify the fund disbursed to his ministry.

He further asked Buhari to direct the audit of funds disbursed to the ministries under fashola from 2016 to 2020, viz: N260.08bn in 2016, N107.38bn in 2017, N344bn in 2018, N280.44bn in 2019 and N169.88bn in 2020.

The APC chieftain made the call while bemoaning the abandonment of the 3,050 Mega Watts power project facility four years after funds were disbursed for its construction.

He noted that the failure of the project and other infrastructural undertakings which were under the direct supervision of Fashola was an indication that the minister’s “capacity to deliver was grossly overrated by the President.”

Gololo said, “Look at the various federal roads under him. For instance, of the 16 federal roads in Kwara State; 13 are in deplorable conditions, with the federal government through the Federal Road Maintenance Agency (FERMA) and other relevant agencies collecting N271, 404,839.64; N58, 434,345.58 in March 2020, N104, 922,205.81 in December 2020, and N108, 048,288.25 in February 2020 of the total project award sum of N32 billion for the rehabilitation of the failed sections linking Bauchi-Gombe road; with nothing to show for it.”

Gololo described the network of federal roads in the country “as death traps which Fashola supervised based on his incompetence.”

He called on the President to act fast and salvage the image of his administration which “has been bastardised by mismanagement caused by people like Fashola.”

Founder of the One Love Family, Satguru Maharaj Ji, says the #EndSARS protest is a consequence of the Nigerian government's refusal to listen to people's cries.

Maharaj Ji said the #EndSARS movement is more than a protest, stating that it is a call for the Nigerian leaders to rise up and bring about a positive change in how they pilot the affairs of the country.

He noted that many Nigerians have been killed by members of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) and other units of the Nigeria Police Force, adding that it was time to reform the sector.

The spiritual leader also urged the Nigerian government to immediately fix the economy of the country, citing hardships, unemployment amid other factors which sometimes push young people to crime.

He said, “#EndSARS came as a result of the Nigerian government's refusal to heed to the call of the people. We speak as Nigerians who have been exposed to the same light.

“It is more than a protest, it is a big warning to the Nigerian leaders to alter their cause for the good of all Nigerians in order for them and their unborn generation to escape the... of their protracted and stubborn misrule.

“It is time for a change. We want the leaders... So many Nigerians have been killed extrajudicially by SARS and wasted by other units of Nigeria's broken police system.

“The politicians are involved, the academics are involved, fathers are involved. Young Nigerians have long been neglected, humiliated and with the attendant frustration of unemployment and poverty, which now drives them to find livelihood in such crimes as internet fraud.

“To find a lasting solution to this, the government needs to fix the economy and provide socio-economic incentives to the young Nigerians, motivations that will drive them to deliver their creative best in a positive way to the utmost benefit of Nigeria and to make Nigeria the paradise.

“We cannot blame the young people, all we need to do is take care of them. I don't see why there should be gunshots, the police, Army was supposed to join them, dance with them. They shouldn't be afraid. If any security personnel is afraid because they're protesting, then they should have left, this is a democracy.

“Today, you have seen what is happening, police harassment, the religious killing of young Nigerians, all that is criminal. We support our youths. Today we have the light. Whatever it is, the government cannot stop the youths, the students, the doctors, the lawyers. We have suffered and sacrificed to make Nigeria great.”

He further stated that the way forward is for Nigerians to realise they need to start using the creator’s name as he invited young Nigerians to a Golden Age Festival programme which will be coming up at the temple very soon.

On Wednesday, youths across the country observed the first anniversary of the #EndSARS protest.

On October 20, 2020, Nigerian youths and other victims of police brutality rose to demonstrate against the excesses of a tactical police unit known then as SARS and other bad governance emanating from President Buhari regime.

Soldiers appeared in the evening of October 20 at the scene of the protest in Lekki and fired at protesters, resulting in deaths and injuries.

President Muhammadu Buhari has revealed that he may grant state pardon to the late environmental activist, Ken Saro-Wiwa and others executed at the height of the Ogoni crisis in the 1990s.

The President gave the indication when some leaders and people of Ogoniland visited him at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, on Friday, Tribune reports.

The activists, who became known as Ogoni 9, were from the Ogoni region and had opposed the operating practices of the Royal Dutch Shell oil corporation.

They were author and playwright Ken Saro-Wiwa, Saturday Dobee, Nordu Eawo, Daniel Gbooko, Paul Levera, Felix Nuate, Baribor Bera, Barinem Kiobel, and John Kpuine.

They were executed in 1995 by the military dictator, General Sani Abacha.

President Buhari noted that despite the gravity of the circumstances, the Nigerian Government will consider the request to grant them a pardon and bring closure to the case.

He said: “Furthermore, we are committed to ensuring clemency and national integration as part of this administration’s bid to lay the foundation for genuine reconciliation and bring closure to the issues of Ogoniland.

“The unfortunate incidents of the early 1990s leading to the loss of lives of distinguished sons of Ogoniland and the collateral judicial processes are indelible in our memories.

“Despite the grievous circumstances, the Federal Government will consider the request for the grant of pardon to finally close the Ogoni saga.”

President Buhari urged the Ogoni leaders to sensitise indigenes to the importance of protecting national assets like pipelines and other oil installations.

According to him, deliberate damages usually wreak more havoc on their environment and hamper development.

He also noted that his regime is committed to cleaning up Ogoniland so that indigenes can return to farms and reactivate economic activities.

A statement issued by Femi Adesina, Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity further quoted the president as saying, “Your Royal Highnesses, distinguished representatives of the people of Ogoniland, I note the need to ensure completion of a segment of the East-West road traversing Ogoniland, and steps will be taken to ensure delivery under the Infrastructure Development Fund as earlier conceived. We intend to complete this vital artery of Nigeria.”

According to him, the Nigerian Petroleum Development Company Ltd (NPDC), a subsidiary of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC), had been granted a license to operate OML11, which will stimulate economic activities and integration in the zone.
