For participating in a protest alongside indigenes of Ikpide-Irri riverine community in Isoko South Local Government Area of Delta State in August against the N736.4 million road contract awarded his marine company, Portplus Limited, by the Delta State Government, Immanuel Emoefe, Chairman of Portplus, has ordered the rearrest of one Endurance Ukpethu.

Following the Wednesday rearrest of Ukpethu, it was gathered that a renewed crisis is said to be brewing as youth in the community have vowed to stop the controversial project until the suspect is released.

They have also issued a strong warning to the contractor and his elder brother, who is the President General of the community, Michael Omojefe, to desist from oppressing and intimidating members of the community.

In July 2018, residents of Ikpide-Irri community and the Isoko Monitoring Group (IMG) had protested against the usage of substandard materials in the execution of the project by the contractor, and Ukpethu had been arrested for his connection with the incident. SaharaReporters gathered that the contractor allegedly connived with the Oleh Divisional Police Officer (DPO), CSP Isah Hassan, his brother, Michael Omojefe, his brother-in-law, a former lawmaker in the state, Ross Uredi, one Pius Otolo and the member representing Isoko South 1 in the state House of Assembly, Orezi Esievo, to effect Ukpethu's rearrest on Wednesday night.

Speaking to our correspondent, Ukpethu's relative confirmed that his arrest was connected with the July protest embarked on in the community against the substandard job being executed by Portplus Limited.

Noting that series of threats had been issued to him before he was eventually arrested, the family member accused the contractor, CSP Hassan, Omojefe, Otolo and Uredi of being responsible.

Speaking with our correspondent, one of the Police officers from the Inspector General of Police office in Abuja, who preferred not to be named, said the arrest followed a petition by the contractor's elder brother.

He said: "The president general's petition was written with the community letterhead and signed by him. Initially, we questioned him on why the community secretary general was not included in the signing the petition. He gave excuses here and there, and we knew something was wrong somewhere. We must do our job, so we went for the arrest."

Reacting to the development, a former chairman in the community who asked not to be named for fear of being arrested as well, condemned said: "Endurance was first arrested by the Oleh DPO who was used and later demanded for N300,000 for his bail, until some persons intervened and he was released on bail without a dime. That was in August. Then a few weeks later, the DPO was financially induced again by his contractor and rearrested Endurance. Through some persons again, he was immediately released on bail when it was obvious that his arrest was politically motivated and out of oppression and intimidation.

"As if that was not enough, just on Wednesday, he was rearrested, this time by a team from the IGP office in Abuja and was taken to Asaba on the frivolous allegation of causing unrest. They also referred to a missing engine boat that was kept in his custody by the local government council and was stolen since 2015 and has since been resolved. However, because he stood against the substandard job being done by Portplus limited, the contractor and their cohorts benefitting from the poor quality job tagged him an enemy."

A top government official in the state, who spoke in confidence with SaharaReporters, called on the contractor to handle the issue with utmost caution.

He said: "I don't know why Emma is doing all this again when the state governor through the commissioner for works has put this issue to rest. This will definitely cause him major damage if not properly handled, because I can authoritatively tell you that it's going to be a can of worms for him. Yes, before now he was known by his real name, Emmanuel Omojefe but all of a sudden he changed his names to Immanuel Emoefe and this is what the concerned indigenes are questioning.

"Please don't quote me, though it was alleged that due to some controversial shady deals, his real name was changed from the Emmanuel Omojefe we used to know him to Immanuel Emoefe. I was reliably informed that some concerned indigenes in the community have contacted lawyers who are putting up petitions to relevant authorities in government to explain his source of wealth among others."

Meanwhile, commenting on the development, a representative of Portplus Limited, who said he was not authorised to comment on the controversial issue on behalf of the company, said all the defects observed in the contract have been noted and shall be taken care of as soon they mobilise back to site in continuation of the contract.

At the time of filing this report, it was gathered that the policemen for the IGP's office treated the suspect professionally.

Fatai Olotu, the Chairman of the Committee on Information of the Ondo State House of Assembly has given more details on why the speaker and the deputy speaker were impeached.

The embattled Ondo State Speaker, Right Honourable Bamidele David Oloyelogun, was impeached on Friday during a rowdy session at a plenary sitting of the Assembly.

Oloyelogun was removed alongside Honourable Iroju Ogundeji, the Deputy Speaker by a two-third majority. See Also Breaking News BREAKING: Ondo House Of Assembly Impeaches Speaker, Deputy Speaker

Speaking to journalists on the development, Olotu, who represents Akoko North East Constituency, said the two main principals of the Assembly were removed due to their "gross incompetence".

He noted that both men were found to have grounded the finances of the Assembly without the knowledge of the floor members.

According to Olotu, the impeached speaker and his deputy exhausted the budgetary allocation to the Assembly within the period of six months. He noted that out of the budget, the total running cost of N1.5 billion was exhausted by the two principals.

He said: "In accordance with the rules guiding the House of Assembly and by the power conferred on the members of the house, the house as at today has successfully impeached the former speaker and deputy speaker.

"Immediately after their removal, Right Honourable Olamide George from Akure North Constituency was elected as the speaker and was duly sworn in by the clerk of the house and Right Honourable Abimbola Fajolu representing Ile-Oluji/Oke-Igbo was also sworn in.

"For the avoidance of doubt, 18 members signed for their removal, which is two-third of the members of the House, so we have fulfilled that requirement. There are many reasons for their removal, but I want you to know that changing leadership is an inherent right of the members of the house.

"But this former speaker of the house and the deputy have shown gross incompetence and they have run the house aground financially. Just for an instance, as at June this year, the former speaker and the deputy speaker have exhausted the budgetary allocation for the house without the knowledge of members which is to the tune of N1.5 billion.

"This is a budget that is supposed to run for a period of a year and has been exhausted within six months, which is June this year. Also, they have never followed due process. If you have to run the finances of the house, we have cash allocation. It is the parliament that must approve such funds, not the sole responsibility of the speaker.

"The speaker and the deputy are grossly incompetent in running the affairs of the house and they are in the habit of blackmailing members, because they know that their time is over. And we have always informed the executive that we don't want them again, but they have been telling lies to the executive that once they are removed, the governor too will be removed.

"I have been in the House for some time and there is no nexus between removing the leadership of House of Assembly and the governor. The governor has not committed any impeachable offence. To the best of our knowledge, the governor has not done anything wrong.

"If you were elected by members, if they say they no longer want you, then you comply. We have never seen that kind of leadership that have run the house in the manner that does not have regard for the members. Although, there are lots of other things we will address the press in due course. But the House has carried out its constitutional role. We don't have any problem with the governor; we don't have any problem with the executive. The executive should stay out of this.”

However, the impeached speaker has kicked against his impeachment by the 18 lawmakers.

Reacting to his impeachment, Oloyelogun told journalists that he remained the “authentic speaker”.

He said his impeachment cannot hold water, as it did not follow due process.

"I still remain the speaker, because what they did was against the law as no 'quorum' was formed. I would regard this impeachment as an internal problem in the House of Assembly, which is going to be resolved soonest.

"So as at now, I remain the Speaker of Ondo State House of Assembly while Right Honourable Ogundeji Iroju still remains the Deputy Speaker of the Assembly and nobody has changed us," Oloyelogun added.

After the release of the names of governorship candidates in Imo State by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) on Friday, it was observed that the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate was not represented on the list even though that of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Emeka Ihedioha, former Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, and others were spotted.

INEC published the names of 67 governorship candidates along with their running mates at its office in Owerri, the state capital. This also includes their credentials and personal details.

A source informed our correspondent that the court stopped the Commission from recognising either Uche Nwosu or Hope Uzodinma, as they were both battling within the party over who should become its candidate. Uzodinma was proclaimed winner of the October 1, which allegedly did not hold, while Nwosu was declared the winner of the October 6 APC governorship primary.

Some of the other names on the list are Linus Okorie of the Young Progressives Party (YPA), Alloysius Osuji of Mass Action Joint Alliance MAJA) and Micheal Ikoku of the Young Democratic Party (YDP).

Only three women were listed as governorship candidates. Among them is Omoyele Sowore's African Action Congress (AAC) whose flg bearer is Omeogu Chidiebere.

Nasir el-Rufai, Governor of Kaduna State, has described the vice-presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) as a "tribal bigot".

The Governor stated this on Friday via a post on Twitter.

Although, he did not expressly state what provoked the statement, he also accused the former Governor of Anambra State of being behind his detention by the Department of State Service (DSS) in 2014.

He said he eventually sued the DSS and was awarded N4 million in damages.

El-Rufai expressed his grievance via a tweet that read: "Peter Obi is a tribal bigot. He was widely quoted on national television that the SSS was right to detain me for 48 hours in an hotel in 2014 on the grounds that 'El-Rufai has no business being in Anambra State as it is not Katsina State'! I sued the SSS and awarded N4m damages."

The Buhari Media Organization (BMO) has countered the claim by Atiku Abubakar, presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), that he would pay N33,000 as minimum wage to his staff.

The former Vice-President had announced on Thursday that he would pay a minimum wage of N33,000 to his staff numbering more than N100,000 members. See Also LABOR/WORKERS' RIGHTS JUST IN: Atiku Approves N33,000 Minimum Wage For All 100,000 Staff On His Payroll

Niyi Akinsiju, the BMO Chairman and Cassidy Madueke, the BMO Secretary, made the organisation's position known in a statement published by NAN on Friday.

The statement read: "We are indeed amused that Atiku, who only recently retrenched some staff of his GOTEL TV in Adamawa State without properly paying them off is dropping hints in the media about a N33,000 minimum wage for his staff.

“One of his senior managers was even quoted as saying over 100,000 people are currently drawing salaries on a monthly basis from the former Vice President, so we are wondering who between him and the PDP presidential candidate is lying about the actual staff strength of the companies.

“Not even Dangote Group which is the largest conglomerate in West Africa has the number of staff these people claim to be on Atiku’s payroll. BMO however noted that this is not the first time the candidate and his people have sought to bamboozle Nigerians.

“Only a few days ago, the PDP presidential candidate promised to reduce fuel price to N90 per litre if voted into power at a time it is common knowledge that the landing cost of a litre of refined petrol is about N158. He must have been shocked in Dubai to see how Nigerians instantly rubbished his poorly thought-out ‘campaign promise’.

“While it is not in our place to advise them, we urge the Atiku campaign team and the PDP to make only realistic promises as even in propaganda, you have to be truthful to the people you seek their votes.”

The group also berated the PDP for "wasting" resources on the meeting held in Dubai.

The statement continued: "Here is a man who has vowed to get Nigeria working, but has spent the last few weeks with his associates boosting the local economy of Dubai under the guise of strategising for the presidential campaigns.

“We believe that the huge resources they have wasted there would have taken many Nigerians out of poverty.

“On the contrary, President Muhammadu Buhari is not only committed to ensuring a new national minimum wage, but is also keen on ensuring that more Nigerians benefit from his social welfare programmes across the country."
