Warring communities in Southern Kaduna have agreed to sheath their swords after a peace meeting between Atyap, Fulani and Hausa communities in the area.

Participants at the meeting condemned the killings and destruction that have occurred and resolved to forgive each other, help security agencies with information to arrest and prosecute criminal elements.

The meeting, which was held on Saturday at Mariyamu and Yakubu Event Centre in Ungwan Wakili under the auspices of His Highness, the Agwatyap, Dominic Gambo Yahaya, brought together the three communities in a peace atmosphere.

In a 14-point resolution, the meeting called on all residents of Atyap Chiefdom not to take laws into their hands and instead submit all grievances to lawful authorities.

The communique reads, "The meeting appreciated the fact that all Nigerians have the constitutional or fundamental rights to move and reside anywhere in Nigeria, including Atyap Chiefdom, without any fear, molestation or harassment from anybody or any source whatsoever.

"The summit therefore called on the authorities to facilitate the return of displaced persons.

"It recommended the establishment of a standing peace committee that should comprise of Hausa, Fulani and Atyap and their youth to organise robust engagement/dialogue on security issues from time to time with a view to sustaining peaceful coexistence.”

Meanwhile, President of Southern Kaduna People's Union, Jonathan Asake, and spokeperson of the group, Luka Binniyat, confirmed the presence of the union at the meeting.

Binniyat, while speaking with SaharaReporters said, "We wish for peace if it is going to bring final peace. If the people have agreed that they have stopped, peace is what we have been yearning for."

Isaacs Kekemeke, a former Chairman of the All Progressives Congress in Ondo State, has said that the party will use armed thugs and militants to disrupt the October 10, 2020 governorship election in the state.

Kekemeke, who spoke in a video obtained by SaharaReporters, said the party would also contract leaders of the National Union of Road Transport Workers in the state to rig the election in favour of the APC.

Isaacs Kekemeke

He said the APC needed to win the governorship election at all cost, noting that the party was prepared to use 'federal might' to influence the election.

Kekemeke, who attacked the governorship candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, Eyitayo Jegede, said the APC would not allow an opposition party to win the governorship election.

He said, "We will use NURTW members and thugs loyal to us (APC) to win this election at all cost.

"Eyitayo (PDP candidate) is only crying foul that they tore his posters in town. He has not seen anything yet.

"Governor Rotimi Akeredolu is the only one dealing with him now he has started crying, what if the Federal Government arrives the state for the election, he will run away."

Two travellers kidnapped last weekend by some gunmen in Ondo State have regained their freedom and also narrated their ordeals in the abductors' den.

The victims were waylaid and seized between Oba and Ikun Akoko area of Akoko South-West Local Government Area of the state.

The duo -- Surajudeen Ajao and Oladele Arisemase -- were seized while travelling for a festival in Ikun area of Oba Akoko.

Gunmen

Their abductors placed a ransom of N10m each on them before their release despite series of negotiations with their families.

Speaking with SaharaReporters after their release, Arisemase said they were freed about 11pm on Thursday after a deal was struck with their families on ransom payment.

He revealed that he was on his way to Ikun from Akure when the hoodlums stopped their vehicle and later marched him into the forest.

He said that he was seized by the abductors and later met one Mr Alao, who had already been kidnapped and kept inside the same forest.

He said, "I left Akure at about 2:30pm on Saturday, I was on my way to Ikun, and when I get to Oba-Akoko, I boarded a bus and there were three Hausa men who joined the vehicle to the community.

"On our way, we saw a vehicle by the roadside. I think it had a fault and we saw a man beside the vehicle and he was even flagging us down to pick him.

"Immidiately we stopped to pick him, we heard gunshots and we were attacked.

"I saw seven men dressed in Fulani attire and armed with AK 47 who came from the bush and ordered us out of the bus before I was marched into the bush.

"They asked the driver and the other one in the bus to leave immediately while they led me into the bush with guns.

"By the time we entered deep into the forest, I saw another man (Alao) who had already been kidnapped on his way to attend the same festival too.

"They began to move us from one location to another every 10 minutes and they spoke in Hausa/Fulani language.

"They were scared in keeping us in a location for long despite the guns in their hands and even threatened us with death if we didn't cooperate.

"When we trekked to an open place, they divided themselves into two groups and moved with their cows as we followed them deep down into the bush.

"Later, we got to a particular spot where we were allowed to rest and there was no water to even drink or food to eat that day.

"From Saturday till the day we were released, we only eat twice as they gave us only yam to eat without water to drink.

"I think God touched their heart and they gave me the phone to talk to my family and it was in the process they demanded ransom of N10m which was later reduced to N500,000.

"They began to negotiate with my family and the sum of over N200,000 was later paid just to secure my release but I don't know how much the other man paid.

"After they raked all the money from our family, the money was brought to them by one Okada man and he left immediately he dropped the cash for them."

Arisemase explained that they reported the matter to the Oba Divisional Police Station after they were released by the abductors.

Mr Tee-Leo Ikoro, Ondo Police spokesperson, confirmed the release of the two victims, saying that the police, civil defence, army and newly launched Amotekun corps had been combing the forest to ensure the victims were rescued from the kidnappers.

Residents of Malali Low Cost Housing Estate in Kaduna State on Friday protested against forceful eviction from their homes and assault by armed policemen accompanied by government officials.

The residents took to the streets to protest against the injustice and humiliation they suffered in the hands of officials, who carried out the exercise.

The protesters, who were mainly windows and orphans clad in black shirts, called on the governor to call the officials to order and in a bid to stop further violation and abuse of their rights.

The eviction took place on Thursday July 19 when the team allegedly stormed the area and forcefully burgled rooms of the residents.

SaharaReporters gathered that the team carted away some jewelleries, cash and other valuable items from the room of a woman, who was not around during the exercise.

She was said to have travelled out of the state for the burial of her husband.

Also, a resident was allegedly arrested and handcuffed for not being able to pay his house rent.

Investigation revealed that the state government leased out the residential quarters to the people but later auctioned and sold them to the highest bidders.

Meanwhile, the occupants claimed that they purchased the intent form with the sum of N10,000 in 2017 before the bidding exercise was later carried out without their knowledge.

They accused the state government of not being sincere in the bidding process by selling the houses to their families and friends.

A resident, Ruth Gideon, who spoke with SaharaReporters, said, "When we confronted the housing authority who has been collecting rent from us, they told us that the directive to stop the collection of rent from us was from state government and that if we have interest to buy the house, we should come and get the form.

"Every tenant got the form at the rate of N10,000 and we paid into government account. On the day of bidding, we went to Government House but waited till evening and nobody attend to us.

"It was later we got information that they had sold it to their cronies."

It was gathered that the team upon arrival at the estate, broke the padlocks of the rooms with hammers and forced the doors opened before throwing out their properties.

Those inside their rooms were ordered out while policemen flung their belongings outside.

A protester, Judith Magudu, while speaking with SaharaReporters said they where physically attacked and assaulted by the security operatives, who barged into their rooms to carry out the eviction.

Judith, who is also an orphan, said they have been staying in the estate for 43 years and paying their rents to the State Housing Authority as at and when due.

She condemned the action of the police and government officials for carting away items and cash belonging to the residents during the exercise.

Judith said, "They asked my neighbour who was staying in the next room if he had paid his house rent till date and he said no and the next thing was that they handcuffed him and took him into their vehicle.

"After leaving my block, they entered another block at Cameroon Avenue and burgled the room of a woman who travelled for the burial of her husband.

"They broke the door and packed all her things. They took her gold jewellery and some money she kept in her box. She is a civil servant who has worked for 35 years with the government.

"We came out to protest and we are calling on the governor to help us. We are thinking he did not know what is happening. If he is a man of the masses, he should show love and compassion."

SaharaReporters had reported how an 85-year-old retired Staff Sergeant of the Nigeria Army, Paul Ojo, was assaulted and evicted from his house at Kabala Costain.

His 75-year-old wife, Veronica, was also beaten up while his two sons were arrested during a forced eviction from their home in the same facility.
