Seventeen persons have been confirmed dead by the Lagos State Emergency Management Authority in the explosion that rocked Abule Ado area of Lagos on Sunday morning. 

The explosion resulted in the damage of over 50 houses including Bethlehem Girls College where 36 school pupils were injured.

He said, "17 bodies have been recovered, while 25 casualties are being treated for injuries on site.

"Properties estimated to worth hundreds of millions of naira with unquantifiable devastation to other assets as well as the environment.

"Aside these, people in their hundreds have suddenly become displaced persons. 

"Upon the arrival of the LRT at the incident scene, it was discovered that a raging fire had displaced several residents who fled their abodes for fear of being caught up in the inferno."

The Nigerian Navy Referral Hospital, Ojo, Lagos, is among over 50 buildings affected by Sunday's explosion around the Abule Ado area of the city. 

The explosion caused damage to upper part of the hospital.

"There were substantial damage done to the ceiling in the hospital," said spokesperson for Western Naval Command, Lagos, Commander Thomas Otuji.

The hospital also received over 55 victims from the incident as it was revealed that 36 school children suspected to be of Bethlehem Girls College were also admitted for treatment.

"The hospital attended to 55 persons made up of 36 school children and 19 adults. 

"One of the adults had about 35 per cent mixed degree burns with inhalation injuries and pulmonary edema. 

"Seven other adults and two children are on admission in the wards while two other adults have traumatic brain injury and were referred to LUTH for neurosurgical intervention. 

"The remaining 43 have been treated and discharged. Unfortunately, three people were brought in dead, two females and a male," Commander Otuji said.

Group Managing Director of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation, Mele Kyari, is currently in Lagos for an on-site assessment of the Abule Ado explosion.

The incident, which occurred on Sunday morning, resulted in the deaths of over 15 persons. 

Over 50 houses were also damaged by the explosion. 

Kyari, in a post on Twitter, revealed that he was currently in Lagos to visit the site.

Lagos, Nigeria’s commercial capital, again recorded another deadly explosion on Sunday morning, leaving behind devastation and chaos in its wake for all those directly affected. The incident, which happened around the Abule Ado area of the city, was triggered by combustible items stocked inside a factory, which went up in flames. Over 50 buildings were affected in the community and other nearby neighbourhoods while at least 15 deaths have already been recorded. The entire place is currently on a lockdown as firefighters and emergency workers move around the site of the explosion to contain the disaster.

But as massive as Sunday’s explosion is, it is not a peculiar one – the tragedy merely adds to a long list of similar events that have haunted Lagos’ rich and poor residents over the years. With most parts of the city densely populated and houses closely crammed in neighbourhoods with poor and inaccessible road networks, attending to disasters such as explosion in Lagos has become a Herculean task for relevant government agencies. 

For example, three persons were confirmed dead after a pipeline exploded at Eroko Road, Abule Egba, Lagos, on January 20, 2020. Spokesperson for the Lagos State Emergency Management Authority, Nosa Okunbor, while confirming the incident at the time, said, “Two adult males and an infant lost their lives while 11 trucks laden with 40feet containers were destroyed and seven buildings razed down by the inferno.”

Before that time in September 2019, tragedy struck when a pipeline explosion razed 13 shops in the Idimu area of Lagos and left several persons battling life-threatening injuries. 

A little over a year before that period, Lagos was brought on its knees when in June 2018 a petrol tanker, which exploded on the Otedola Bridge close to the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, wreaked havoc on anything within sight. By the time the fury of the explosion simmered, over 12 persons laid dead while several others battled burn wounds. The tragedy also consumed more than 54 vehicles caught by the fire from the burning petrol tanker.

In June 2014, pipeline vandals breached oil installations belonging to the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation at Ilado, a small island off the coast of Lagos, causing several deaths and destruction.

This was after a similar incident at the same location in December 2006 where a pipeline explosion killed hundreds of persons. 

In May of that same year, at least 150 people were killed when another explosion caused by a pipeline breach rocked the same community.

Pockets of smaller explosions were recorded across the city after that period with destruction and deaths trailing such incidents.

However, the scariest of explosions so far witnessed in Lagos occurred on January 27, 2002 when the armoury inside the Ikeja Cantonment – in the heart of the city – went up in flames. The impact of the explosion was so much that it was felt across many parts of Lagos, damaging houses, cars and other valuables.  Apart from at least 1,100 persons that were believed to have been killed, more than 20,000 others were rendered homeless and left with varying degree of injuries. That incident remains one of the most tragic in the history of Nigeria. A cenotaph at the foot of the Oke-Afa Bridge in Isolo, a suburb within the metropolis, serves as a sad reminder to that tragedy. 

Town planning experts have called for communities to be designed in ways that leave room for easy evacuation and intervention by emergency workers in cases of disasters such as the Abule Ado incident. Sadly, the city of Lagos with all its ‘sophistication’, is not close to achieving that target. Like many Nigerian cities, it remains at the mercy of avoidable disasters that now threaten lives and property.

SaharaReporters can confirm that students of Bethlehem Girls College escaped the fire outbreak caused by an explosion at Abule-Ado area of Lagos on Sunday morning.

The incident led to the destruction of several houses with residents seen hurriedly removing personal items from some of the affected buildings.

The school is located close to the explosion site.

While residents were unable to move close to the school to rescue the students, teachers and those present were able to find an escape route for all those trapped inside. 

A parent, who spoke with our correspondent, said the school called them to immediately come for their children.

However, a staff of the school is missing and yet to be found as at the time of filing this report.

A parent said, “Students survived, they (school) called parents to come and take their children home.

“She (my daughter) came back with only her Sunday uniform, the church was completely burnt down.

“They broke a wall for the students to escape, right now, a reverend sister is missing.”

Scores of houses have been destroyed in several Lagos communities after an explosion hit the city on Sunday morning. 

Persons residing in Abule Ado, FESTAC, Ojo and other areas all had bitter tales to tell on various social media platforms as they lamented the destruction of their houses and other structures. 

Officials of the Lagos State Emergency Management Authority revealed that a pipeline exploded around Abule Ado while the Federal Fire Service in a post on Twitter disclosed that they were tracking the situation.

Sources however, confirmed to SaharaReporters that the incident was caused by multiple factory explosions at Abule Ado.
