A leaked audio tape has revealed one of the moments when Governor Nasir El-Rufai of Kaduna State planned with his officials to frustrate the Nigeria Labour Congress protesters and "neutralise them."

The 16-minute audio tape, obtained by SaharaReporters on Friday, was believably captured on Tuesday by one of El-Rufai's kitchen cabinet members.

Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai

The audio captured the governor's anger with the NLC.

El-Rufai and other voices in the tape were caught insinuating that the NLC leaders first camped in Kano State before they reached Kaduna and were mobilised from there by the Kano State government, making a veiled reference to Governor Abdullahi Ganduje's officials.

In the tape, the governor was also briefed on the activities of alleged hired thugs and the plan to disrupt the peaceful protest on Wednesday and he was excited about the development.

They also discussed the police personnel whom they accused of giving protection to the NLC protesters and not siding with the state government.

"We pray they come out tomorrow, let them come out. We will mobilise," one of those with him said.

Answering a phone call believably from the Minister of Transportation. Rotimi Amaechi, as captured in the tape, the governor said, "Oh Amaechi, excellency, how now? Oga sir, how are you doing? Hello, can you hear me?

"Oga sir, I may not be able to come today because I still have a situation on my hands. I think we will have neutralised them by tomorrow or next. I don't know whether you are still in town.

"Give me today and tomorrow. Let's plan for Thursday evening. Thursday afternoon, we will be in economic summit. It will be virtual but I will be busy. Thuraday evening will be fine.

"Politicians...nobody wants to confront the unions. I am the only North politician in Nigeria. This whole thing is being financed. They came from Kano right? They brought aides from Kano. They went to Kano."

El-Rufai had accused his fellow governors of abandoning his administration in its crisis with the Nigeria Labour Congress.

The Punch reported that El-Rufai said this during a virtual meeting of the Nigeria Governors’ Forum on Wednesday, May 19.

He also accused an unnamed governor of providing mobilisation funds for the NLC to destabilise the northwestern state.

Workers in the state workers had on Monday begun a five-day strike over  El-Rufai administration’s retrenchment of 45,000 workers and his alleged anti-labour policies.

Addressing fellow governors at the meeting, he said,  “I would like to inform the forum that one of our colleagues, a state governor actually gave the NLC money to come to Kaduna to do this because people think everything is politics. This is not politics. This is a monster that will consume all of us. It will not consume Kaduna I’m confident of that.”

When reminded that the NGF issued a statement from the office of the chairman on the subject, El-Rufai replied, “That press release with the greatest respect was unhelpful. It was unhelpful. It said nothing. It was trying to play both sides.”

SaharaReporters on Tuesday reported that hoodlums reportedly loyal to El-Rufai disrupted the peaceful protest embarked upon by the NLC in Kaduna State.

The governor in a tweet had earlier said the labour union leaders were declared wanted for “economic sabotage and attacks on public infrastructure under Miscellaneous Offences Act."

He said there would be a “handsome reward” for anyone who knows the whereabouts of the union leaders.

A source said while the protest was going on in Kaduna on Tuesday, some suspected thugs in different vehicles, started stoning the protesters.

The NLC later on Thursday ended the five-day warning strike.

General Ibrahim Attahiru, the Chief of Army Staff, has died in a plane crash.

Details of the incident are still sketchy but SaharaReporters learnt from a military source that there was no survivor in the crash that occurred on Friday.

Ibrahim Attahiru

The Chief of Army Staff (COAS) is the highest ranking military officer of the Nigerian Army. The position is often occupied by the most senior commissioned officer appointed by the President of Nigeria. The current COAS is Attahiru Ibrahim.

President Muhammadu Buhari on Tuesday, January 26, 2021 appointed new service chiefs, finally letting go of the Chief of Defence Chief, General Abayomi Olonisakin; Chief of Army Staff, Lt Gen Tukur Buratai; Chief of Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Ibok-Ete Ibas; and Chief of Air Staff, Air Marshal Sadique Abubakar, after the four had spent five years and five months in office.

Attahiru served as the Theatre Commander, Operation Lafiya Dole, before he was removed from the position barely nine months after he was appointed in 2017.

During his tenure as the Theatre Commander, Operation Lafiya Dole, the Theatre recorded many successes against the insurgents following concerted efforts of troops in the newly-launched Operation DEEP PUNCH 2 and Operation RUWAN WUTA in Sambisa forest

Some of the operations he led resulted in the killing of two key Boko Haram commanders, Abdu Kawuri and Abubakar Benishek, at Alafa in the Bama Local Government Area of Borno State.

His redeployment followed the deadliest attacks by Boko Haram insurgents on Biu town in Borno where at least 18 people were killed and 52 others seriously injured.

General Attahiru was redeployed to Nigerian Army Headquarters as Deputy Chief of Policy and Plans.

He was former General Officer Commanding, 82 Division of the Nigerian Army, Enugu.

The identity of the driver of the Toyota Matrix car that crushed a young child in Ogbomoso, Oyo State during the local government election campaign on Thursday, has been revealed.

The man identified as Nurudeen Alade was said to be a member of National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), otherwise known as Park Manager System (PMS) in the state.

Oyo Governor, Makinde’s Convoy Kills Young Boy In Ogbomoso During Campaign

SaharaReporters on Thursday reported that about 500 commercial buses and other cars accompanied the state governor, Seyi Makinde to campaign in Ogbomoso on Thursday.

Chief Press Secretary to the governor, Taiwo Adisa, who denied that the girl was killed by a vehicle in the convoy of his principal, said, "Seyi Makinde was not involved in the accident that led to the death of a girl during the local government election campaign in Ogbomoso on Thursday."

Adisa, who expressed the governor's condolence to the family of the deceased child, said that contrary to the story alleging the killing of the child by a vehicle in the convoy of the Oyo State governor, the girl was killed by a Toyota Matrix car.

According to the governor's aide, the vehicle was said to have lost control after its front tyres deflated while in motion, close to the venue of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) campaign rally.

Adisa said the governor's convoy had arrived at the Oja-gbo Town Hall venue of the rally, with the governor and his entourage settled in before the incident occurred.

He said it was while the programme was ongoing that some residents stormed the venue of the event with the corpse of the child.

He maintained that it is common knowledge that Toyota Matrix vehicles are not part of any governor's convoy in Nigeria, saying: "While we await further details on the identity of the driver of the ill-fated car from security agencies, the people of Ogbomoso should remain calm and rest assured that the government will get to the root of this matter."

The governor's aide warned against false and sensational journalism, stating that Makinde commiserated with the family of the deceased because he values all lives and would never want any life to be lost under any circumstance.

Reacting to the statement, a former governor of the state and indegene of Ogbomoso land, Otunba Adebayo Alao-Akala asked Makinde to ensure that a thorough investigation is carried out on this incident and the findings made public.

He said whoever is responsible should be brought to justice.

Meanwhile, the All Progressives Congress (APC), in a statement issued on Friday and made available to journalists in Ibadan by its Assistant Publicity Secretary, Prince Ayobami Adejumo, said it was the height of insensitivity and irresponsibility for Makinde to have made any attempt to deny the fact that innocent girl's life was cut short by one of his core loyalists who drove recklessly to create fear in the minds of the people as drivers of the vehicles who form the convoy of the governor usually behave.
"But in the early hours of Friday, it came to the knowledge of the general public that Governor Makinde was economical with truth as it was discovered that one Alade Nurudeen was actually the culprit. The same man (Nurudeen Alade) was not only a card-carrying member of the PDP but also one of those appointed by the governor as handlers of the Park Management System (PMS) in the state."

The party said, "It is an established fact that those given the opportunity to amass wealth from revenue derivable from all motor parks pride themselves as park managers and people in power. They move around in unregistered vehicles as they usually replace authorised number plates with stickers which carry various inscriptions announcing the power vested in their overall boss (Mukaila Lamidi, also known as Auxiliary).

"Nurudeen Alade was carried away by power conferred on his likes by Governor Makinde and he caused another disaster which would haunt him forever. Immediately the incident occurred, the thugs in the governor's entourage knew the implications of what they had done and they tried to conceal the identity of their colleague who committed the murder. They removed the implicating sticker on the vehicle but later, the truth came out and this development also made the governor to delete all his previous tweets in which he had denied the obvious."

The Nigerian Communications Commission has denied reports that mobile subscribers will be required to submit the international mobile equipment identity (IMEI) of their phones to it from July, 2021.

In a statement on Friday, the Director of public affairs of the NCC, Ikechukwu Adinde, said the commission did not at any time issue a statement regarding the registration of IMEI by subscribers and it has no plans to do so.

The statement read, “The reports in question have emanated from a section of the Revised National Identity Policy for SIM Card Registration recently launched by President Muhammadu Buhari and which has been uploaded on the Commission’s website.

“It is pertinent to state that the Commission is in the process of deploying a Device Management System (DMS). The DMS will essentially protect subscribers against phone theft and will identify and enable the elimination of fake devices from the networks. The system will capture IMEI automatically without any requirement for subscribers to submit same.”

Adinde advised the general public to disregard the said publications, which have created the erroneous impression that telephone subscribers will be required to register their IMEI with their networks.

The Federal Government has said it will not increase the price of petrol in June despite the recommendation by the Nigeria Governors' Forum that the cost of the commodity should be increased.

On Wednesday, a committee set up by the Nigeria Governor’s Forum recommended a petrol price of between N408.5/litre and N380/litre, and also called for immediate removal of petrol subsidy.

But in a statement issued and signed by the Minister of State for Petroleum Resources, Chief Timipre Sylva, in Abuja on Friday, the government ruled out the possibility of a hike in petrol price any time soon.

The minister, who admitted that petrol subsidy had been a huge burden on the government, however assured Nigerians that the cost of the commodity would remain the same at between N162/litre and N165/litre.

Sylva said, “Once again it has become necessary to assure Nigerians that despite the huge burden of under-recovery, the Federal Government is not in a hurry to increase the price of Premium Motor Spirit (petrol) to reflect current market realities.

“The current price of petrol will be retained in the month of June until the ongoing engagement with organised labour is concluded.”

He added, “This clarification becomes necessary in the light of recent reports regarding the resolution of the Nigeria Governors Forum to increase the pump price of petrol.”
