The Rule of Law And Accountability Advocacy Centre has raised the alarm over the presence of suspected political thugs at Sunview Hotel, Alagbaka, Akure, Ondo State, ahead of the governorship election in the state on October 10.

RULAAC stated that the suspected thugs had been at the place for about a week.

The group, acting as independent election observers for the governorship election, said the suspected thugs do not look like regular lodgers and appeared suspicious in their outlook and mannerism.

"There are some people lodged at Sunview Hotel, Alagbaka, Akure, for about a week and probably for the next one week.

"They don’t look like regular lodgers. They look suspicious with their mannerisms, outlook and appearances as political thugs, probably kept there for next Saturday’s governorship election. They are mostly lodged at the extension of the hotel," RULAAC said.

The group urged the police and other security agencies to send a surveillance team to the hotel as a preemptive measure to ensure violence was curtailed before it starts.

Recall that the election campaign has been marred by violence with over 10 incidences recorded by observers and the media.

Yiaga Africa, a non-governmental organisation, has highlighted Akure South, Akoko South-East, Idanre, Owo and Akoko South-West as the local government areas with a high incidence and indicators of violence.

The group predicted that the continued outbreak of violence before the election could lead to a decline in voter turnout during election.

Former governor of Cross River State, Donald Duke, has condemned the Nigerian Government for engaging the Chinese in the infrastructural development of the country.

Duke disclosed this on Saturday at an event to celebrate Nigeria's 60th independence anniversary.

Donald Duke

Chinese companies are presently involved in multiple projects across the Nigeria, comprising the construction of airport terminals, roads and rails including inner-city light rails in Abuja and Lagos.

Some of the projects include a $600m project for four international airport terminals.
Construction of the three major rail lines being built across the country.

They are Lagos-Kano (with another line from Kaduna to Abuja), Lagos-Calabar rail and Port Harcourt-Maiduguri rail, whose costs are put at $9bn, $11bn and $15bn, respectively.

Also the 156km Lagos-Ibadan railway stretch was awarded initially at $1.5bn to a Chinese company in 2016 by the Muhammadu Buhari administration.

Additional $500m was later approved by the Buhari’s government for the procurement of locomotives and other rolling stocks for the new line.

Reacting to the development, Duke said, “As long as we continue to outsource our development, we will never gain the confidence to develop our nation. It has to be developed by ourselves. We can talk of rail lines, we are bringing the Chinese to develop the world for us, well, you are outsourcing.

“We need to take it head-on, be prepared to make the mistakes, build those rail lines, build the things that you required.”

“We talk more of investment in infrastructure than skills and that ought not to be and the skills also should involve technology.”

The Petroleum and Natural Gas Senior Staff Association of Nigeria has said that it will be resisting plans by Chevron Nigeria Limited to sack 600 workers in the company.

In addition, over 2,000 have been “constructively dismissed” and then asked to reapply for fresh jobs.

The oil company has announced that it will be reducing its staff strength by 25 per cent as it is reviewing its manpower requirements due to the outbreak of Coronavirus.

The oil major in a statement on Friday by its General Manager, Policy, Government and Public Affairs, Esimaje Brikinn, said all employees will retain their employment until the reorganisation process wws completed.

However, PENGASSAN stated that Chevron Nigeria had already dismissed over 2,000 staff with 600 of them listed for permanent dismissal.

A staff of the company, who spoke with SaharaReporters, said the company took the decision following the outbreak of the pandemic with staff made to work from home.

Also, Ete Oyegbanren, Branch Chairman and Lavin Aghaunor, Branch Secretary of Chevron PENGASSAN, in a statement alleged that the company planned to replace the Nigerians sacked with Americans, who will be working remotely.

The statement reads, “Chevron Management experimented with Work From Home (WFH) since the outbreak of COVID-19 in March 2020 and discovered that since Nigerians can work from their homes during the lockdown period using internet connection, the same work being done by Nigerians here can be done remotely by Americans from the US hence the move to sack 600 Nigerians and replace them with Americans who would be working remotely from the US. This is a case of worsening the unemployment situation in Nigeria and using same to address those of America.

“The President Muhammadu Buhari led Federal Government has made the creation of 1 million jobs per year a cornerstone of his administration. The government even went further by approving the recruitment of over 1,000 employees to the Nigeria National Petroleum Corporation.

"We are also aware that the FG advised companies not to sack Nigerian workers under the guise of COVID-19. We have credible information that Chevron management is boasting that the President of Nigeria cannot dictate to them how to run the company, despite the fact that NNPC owns 60 per cent of the Joint Venture.

“The plan of Chevron management is part of a grand scheme by multinational oil companies operating in Nigeria to gradually relocate work being done in Nigeria to their home country. In this instance, there will be offshoring of 600 Nigerian jobs to America thereby worsening the unemployment situation in Nigeria. As patriotic Nigerians, PENGASSAN shall resist this with all tools available to her.”

The union also staged a protest to express their dissatisfaction with the plan of the oil company.

PENGASSAN urged the Nigerian Government “to call the management of Chevron to order and direct them to comply with Nigerian laws and regulations in the oil and gas industry”.

Reacting to the claims of replacing foreigners with American at Chevron Nigeria, the company said it is focused on cutting cost and not migrating jobs from Nigeria.

Brikinn noted that the company was engaging its workers to reach an understanding on the actions of the company.

He said, “We have prospects for our company in Nigeria. However, we must make the necessary adjustments in light of the prevailing business climate; and we need everyone’s support to get through these tough times stronger, more efficient and more profitable, in order to sustain the business.

“We are actively engaging our workforce to ensure they understand why this is being done.

“We will continue to consistently engage all relevant stakeholders, including the leadership of the employee unions as we continue this process of business optimisation.”

The Police Command in Akwa Ibom has confirmed the killing of six suspected armed robbers specialised in car snatching in the state and Cross River.

Amiengheme Andrew, Commissioner of Police, stated this while parading the robbers in Uyo, the state capital.

Andrew said the police, acting on credible intelligence, ambushed the armed robbers while operating along Itu/Calabar Highway.

He explained that the robbers were on their way to Abia State to sell a car they snatched from a Calabar-based medical doctor when they met a patrol team.

The Commissioner said, “We acted on a credible intelligence that a six-man armed robbery gang whose specialty is car snatching in Akwa Ibom and Cross River were operating along Calabar-Itu Expressway.

“On receipt of the intel, SARS operatives proceeded to the scene, on sighting the police Hilux, the hoodlums opened fire on the operatives. A gun battle ensued and the six armed robbers sustained gun wounds.

“They were taken to the police hospital in Uyo for treatment but they were confirmed dead by the doctor.

“Exhibits recovered were three locally made pistols, ten life cartridges, four expended cartridges, one pump action gun, one unregistered motorcycle, military camouflage cap and a Toyota Camry snatched from the victim, Dr Arinze Obinna, a physiotherapist at the General Hospital, Calabar.”

The CP warned hoodlums engaged in cultism, armed robbery, rape and other vices to desist or leave the state as the command would not accommodate any form of crime and criminality.

General Overseer of the Redeemed Christian Church of God, Pastor Enoch Adeboye, has warned of a possible collapse of Nigeria if the Muhammadu Buhari-led government looked on while the country plunged into various insurrections and criminalities.

Adeboye disclosed this on Saturday at an event to commemorate the 60th independence anniversary of Nigeria co-organised by the Redeemed Christian Church of God and the Nehemiah Leadership Institute.

He said the restructuring of the country must be done “as soon as possible” to forestall a breakup of the various social-ethnic components that made up Nigeria.

He proposed the adoption of a merger of the British style of government and the American system of government to pave the way for Nigeria’s future.

He said, “Why can’t we have a system of government that is 100 per cent Nigerian, unique to us? For example, we started on with the British system of government, somewhere along the line, we moved over to the American system of government.

“Can’t we have a combination of both and see whether it could help us solve our problems because in Mathematics if you want to solve a problem, you try what we call Real Analysis, then if it doesn’t work, then you move on to Complex Analysis and see whether that will help you. If that fails, you move on to Vector Analysis and so on.

“I believe that we might want to look at the problems of Nigeria in a slightly different manner. Some people feel that all our problems will be over if Nigeria should break up. I think that is trying to solve the problems of Nigeria as if it is a simple equation. The problems of Nigeria will require quite a bit of simultaneous equation and some of them are not going to be linear either – forgive me I am talking as a Mathematician.

“Why can’t we have a system of government that will create what I will call the United States of Nigeria? Let me explain. We all know that we must restructure. It is either we restructure or we break, you don’t have to be a prophet to know that one. That is certain – restructure or we break up.

“If we have a President and a Prime Minister and we share responsibilities between these two so that one is not an appendage to the other. For examples, if the President controls the Army and the Prime Minister controls the Police. If the President controls resources likes oil and mining and the Prime Minister controls finance and inland revenue, taxes, customs etc. You just divide responsibilities between the two.

“At the state level, you have the governor and the premier, and the same way, you distribute responsibilities these people in such a manner that one cannot really go without the other. Maybe we might begin to tackle the problems.

“If we are going to adopt the model, then we need to urgently restore the House of Chiefs. I have a feeling that one of our major problems is that we have pushed the traditional rulers to the background and I believe that is a grave error.

“Without any doubt, we must restructure and do it as soon as possible. A United States of Nigeria is likely to survive than our present structure.”
