The Indigenous People of Biafra has said next week Thursday is the only day its members should exercise sit-at-home to honour its leader, Nnamdi Kanu, as he is expected in court.

The group refuted claims that it asked members to sit at home for the one-year remembrance of the #EndSARS protesters killed by the military men and other security agencies last year.

IPOB further revealed it suspended the weekly Monday sit-at-home in the South-region, adding that those who did so did out of their volition.

It, then, warned its members and supporters of its leader to shun orders that did not come from its leadership.

These were contained in a statement by its spokesperson, Emma Powerful, which was made available to SaharaReporters on Saturday.

The statement read, “The attention of IPOB has been drawn to the fabricated statement being circulated by mischief makers and paid agents of darkness that IPOB had directed Biafrans to sit-at-home Monday, October 18; Tuesday, October 19; and Thursday, October 21 for our leader, and one-year anniversary of#EndSARS protest.

“We want to make it categorically clear that the above purported statement did not emanate from IPOB, and we completely dissociate with such falsehood. IPOB did not issue any sit-at-home except on October 21 when our leader is expected to appear in court.

“We, therefore, urge members of the public to ignore the purported statement and utter falsehood being peddled by paid agents of the government to create confusion and demarket IPOB. Their intention is to portray IPOB as a violent and insensitive movement but we know their antics, and shall beat them to it.

“For the sake of clarity, IPOB has not called for any sit-at-home except on Thursday, October 21 when Nnamdi Kanu will appear in court in Abuja. Biafrans will show solidarity with him by staying indoors on that day because we are all in the struggle together. He did nothing to deserve any persecution by the federal government.

“We seriously warn all those behind this rumour to retrace their steps and stop tarnishing the good image of IPOB. As a responsible and responsive movement, we stopped Monday Sit-at-homes in the interest of our people. When we discovered that hooligans and paid agents of death wanted to hijack the opportunity to unleash mayhem on our people are cleverly blame it on IPOB, we stopped it. So, anybody sitting at home on Mondays does so out of their volition and not on the orders of IPOB.

“We also urge the general public to ignore the fake news that our leader Mazi Nnamdi KANU has been taken away by a foreign government.”

The Leader Of INRI Evangelical Spiritual Church, Primate Elijah Ayodele has taken a swipe at Pastor Tunde Bakare of the Citadel Global Community Church over the latter's comment on running for president in 2023.

Bakare, who paid a visit to President Muhammadu Buhari on Friday, said he will contest for the position if God and Nigerians asked him to.

He further described himself as a nation builder.

Reacting, Primate Ayodele frowned at the remark stating that Pastor Bakare should face his missionary work and stop mismanaging the grace of God upon his life.

Ayodele noted that Bakare cannot win an election in his church not to talk of winning an election in Nigeria.

In a statement by his media aide, Oluwatosin Osho, the clergyman advised him to spend his money on the less privileged in his church rather than waste it on something that has no reward from God. ‘’Tunde Bakare is mismanaging the grace of God upon his life and ministry. The dream of becoming Nigeria’s president is not realistic for him; he can’t even win an election in his church not to talk of Nigeria.

‘’If he has money, he should use it to help the less privileged in his church instead of going about to waste his time for nothing.

‘’Tunde Bakare should relax, forget the dream of becoming Nigeria’s president and face his missionary work that God sent him to do. He should preach the gospel, win more souls for Christ.,” he said.

Meanwhile, Bakare launched the “Nigeria-for-Nigeria” group some months ago. Addressing his members, Bakare had said the new group would be greater than the “Save Nigeria Group”, a pressure group which he convened in 2010.

Bakare was quoted as saying, “I am going to champion it and it will go like wildfire across this nation. Nigeria-for-Nigeria will be bigger than Save Nigeria Group."

However, Ayodele cautioned Nigerians against joining the group, stating that Bakare created the group to further his political ambition.

He said at the time, “Tunde Bakare’s Nigeria for Nigeria movement is not divine, it is another means to put Nigerians in bondage again. Nigerians should not join this movement or else, another disaster awaits us.”

The Catholic Archbishop of Lagos State, Most Reverend Alfred Adewale-Martins, has stated that Nigeria's next president should be from the South-East region.

The cleric, who spoke at the weekend during the 2021 Catholic Women Organisation of Nigeria (CWON) meeting in Lagos said President Muhammadu Buhari's successor must be an Igbo man.

According to him, an Igbo becoming the country’s leader would amount to equity and justice.

Adewale-Martins noted that other zones have occupied the number one position except the South-East.

He further opined that true federalism would resolve the unending agitations for self-actualisation by ethnic nationalities.

Adewale-Martins insisted that the system of government Nigeria’s founding fathers wanted is not being practised.

“The disenchantment of the citizens speaks volume of our dysfunctional system of federalism laced with the Nigerian factor as against the true practice,” the News Agency of Nigeria quoted him as saying.

The Archbishop lamented that many innocent people had been killed due to disunity and imbalance.

While urging women and youths to use their numbers to make a difference, Adewale-Martins urged stakeholders in politics to always ensure “good persons” emerged as flag bearers.

The United Nations World Food Programme has said the agency may soon cut its food rations to women and children in the Boko Haram-ravaged North-Eastern region of Nigeria.

Chris Nikoi, the West Africa Regional Director of the UN WFP stated this, while noting that funding sources had become limited warning that over half a million people benefitting from its food aid may be shut out.

According to a statement shared in Abuja on Saturday, Nikoi said, “Cutting rations means choosing who gets to eat and who goes to bed hungry. We are seeing funding for our life-saving humanitarian work dry up just at the time when hunger is at its most severe.”

According to the News Agency of Nigeria, the UN official also said the body urgently needs a $5million donation in a matter of weeks to sustain the programme.

The number of internally displaced persons in Boko Haram ravaged states of Borno, Yobe and Adamawa surpassed two million in September 2021, reaching another grim milestone, the director noted.

A cut in the WFP supply in the area would compound woes as severe hunger reached a five-year high in the country. Unending insurgency, which has hampered farming, has been worsened by the socio-economic fallout from COVID-19.

“Our food assistance is a lifeline for millions whose lives have been upended by conflict and have almost nothing to survive on. We must act now to save lives and avoid disruptions to this lifeline,” Nikoi added.

The WFP director said that current food security analyses showed that 4.4 million people in North-East Nigeria did not know where their next meal would come from, and over one million children are already malnourished.

He cited continued attacks on communities by non-state armed groups, harsh lean season conditions amid an economy dealing with the fallout from the COVID-19, as portending great danger for the people.

Nikoi added that high food prices and a severe reduction in household purchasing power had also contributed to a bleak outlook for the most vulnerable people in North-East Nigeria.

Falana & Falana Chambers, the firm of human rights lawyer, Femi Falana, SAN, has written to the Inspector-General of Police, Usman Alkali Baba, seeking police protection for #EndSARS protesters holding the anniversary protest on October 20.

A copy of the letter, which was obtained by SaharaReporters on Saturday, was signed by Marshal Abubakar on behalf of the firm.

Femi Falana (SAN)

The letter to the IGP stated that the law firm sought protection for the protesters considering attempts by unscrupulous elements to hijack similar events in the past.

The letter cited Section 83 (4) of the Police Establishment Act, 2020 to support the call for police protection.

It reads: “We are a law firm committed to the enthronement of justice, constitutionalism and rule of law in Africa.

“We are counsel to a number of compatriots who have resolved to hold an event in commemoration of the 1st Anniversary of the #ENDSARS# Protests at the Unity Fountain, Maitama, Abuja on October 20, 2021, at 10am.

“Mindful of attempts to hijack similar events in the past, we hereby notify the Police and request for adequate police protection at the venue of the event in accordance with Section 83 (4) of the Police Establishment Act, 2020 which provides thus:

“Where a person or organisation notifies the police of his or its intention to hold a public meeting, rally or procession on a public highway or such meetings in a place where the public has access to, the police officer responsible for the area where the meeting rally or procession will take place shall mobilise personnel to provide security cover for the meeting, rally or the procession.

”As Adekeye JCA professed in the celebrated case of IGP V ANPP & 11 ORS (2008) 12 W.R.N 65-112 Democracy admits of dissent, protest, marches, rallies and demonstrations. True democracy ensures that these are done responsibly and peacefully without violence, destruction or even unduly disturbing any citizen and with the guidance and control of law enforcement agencies. Peaceful rallies are replacing strikes and violent demonstrations of the past.

“The Police Order Act relating to the issuance of police permit cannot be used as a camouflage to stifle the citizens' fundamental rights in the course of maintaining law and order. The right to right to demonstrate and the right to protest on matters of public concern are rights which are in the public interest and that which individuals must possess, and which they should exercise without impediment as long as no wrongful act is done.

“Whilst anticipating your prompt favourable cooperation, please accept the kind regards of our professional esteem.”

The October 20 EndSARS anniversary protest across the country is being planned, among other things, to demand for justice and compensation for the police brutality victims who have yet to hear anything from the government.

Already some of the police commands in flagrant disregard of human rights had threatened to stop any protest on October 20, while warning that it would arrest anyone who indulges in violence.
