Nigerian Super Eagles lost to the  Algerian side at the Cairo International Stadium, Egypt on Sunday.

The Super Eagles had defeated Cote D’Ivoire 2-1 in the quarter-finals of the ongoing African Cup Of Nations, AFCON, to reach the semifinals where they lost to the Algerian side.

An own goal from Super Eagles, Troost-Ekong, the defender who scored the last-minute winner for his team in the quarter-finals, gave the lead to Algeria at half time.

However, deep into the second half, a handball appeal by Super Eagles was reviewed by Video Assistant Referee, VAR after which the referee awarded a penalty to Nigeria.

The penalty was played by Odion Ighalo who calmly took the shot past the Algerian Keeper M’Bolhi.

The cookie finally crumbled for Nigeria when the referee blew for a free-kick at the last minute which was converted by Mahrez who struck home the goal.

Meanwhile, Senegal danced their way into the 2019 AFCON finals for the second time after beating Tunisia by an own goal late into extra time.

Although both sides had penalties opportunity they, however, both failed to hit the target and the game was forced to proceed to extra time where Tunisia defender Dylan Bronn’s own goal gave Senegal the ticket to the finals.

Two persons were reportedly killed in a renewed hostility between Usumtong and Ebom communities in Abi Local Government Area of Cross River State.

Chief Sunday Obite, the village head of Ebom, on Sunday, claimed that one  Oti Ato and his son were allegedly beheaded by people from Usumtong village on Saturday.

Obite said, “The man and his family were harvesting cassava when they were attacked by the Usumutong people.

“According to the grandson, who is currently receiving treatment in the hospital in Itigidi, he saw them behead his grandfather and father from his hiding place in the bush.

“They even made the wife, Eliza Oti, watch while they behead her husband and her son and asked her to take the message to her people.

We believed that since soldiers are present, peace had returned but we have been proven wrong once again.

“Even as they steal our farm produce, we kept mute but now they have started again by killing a father and his son in the presence of the wife.”

Confirming the incident, the Police Public Relation Officer in Cross River State, DSP Irene Ugbo, said, “We are aware of the killings and the Commissioner of Police has deployed men there. The community leaders have also been invited to meet with the Commissioner of Police for further deliberation. For now, the area is calm.”

The Serving Overseer of the Latter Rain Assembly, Pastor Tunde Bakare, says many Nigerian pastors get away with fake prophecies because their members fail to challenge them when the prophecies don’t come true.

Bakare said this on Sunday during a church service at the Latter Rain Assembly in Lagos, televised on ChannelsTV.

He said materialism had been masquerading as prosperity in the churches, lamenting that materialism had eaten deep into the soul of the church.

He said, “People don’t know the difference between materialism and prosperity. Men become so materialistic that the size of their accounts and the number of their congregation give them a platform, whether God is with them or not, whether Satan is the one doing mahuru, mahuru.

“Ask anybody in a church what is a success. Tell me the truth. Fame, power, prestiges, money, are what we consider success. From God’s perspective, that is zero because you can get those from Satan and he would waste your life in no time.”

While rebuking pastors for merchandising the “anointing of God,” the cleric recalled a story of the mother-in-law of one of his friends.

He said, “I remember the story of a friend, the mother-in-law was part of a church of a pastor (I won’t mention name). The man was preaching a hot message that the Lord just said to him that if anyone would give one million naira to the church, in one month, he or she would get N10m back. He said if you don’t get it, come back for your money.

“The woman took him (the pastor) seriously. She went and gathered all that she had and brought it to the pastor and said, ‘Pastor, here is my one million. I believe in you and I believe in the prophecy.’ But she was smart. She started counting the days from the moment she dropped the donation. By the end of the month when she did not get the 10 million the pastor prophesied, she visited the pastor to demand her money.

“She told the pastor, ‘I am here, I have come back for my money. I am not joking. If you don’t give me I will call the police.’ O san o (The pastor paid it back).

“Because others would not come back like this woman, that is why they (pastors) get away with it (fake prophecies). The woman said ‘thank you’ and left the church. That would start taking place in the church; then they (pastors) would not promise what they cannot deliver.”

Power has now been restored to all customers after a power failure in New York halted subway trains and trapped people in lifts on Saturday evening.

Energy company Con Edison said more than 70,000 homes and businesses lost power in Manhattan, the most densely populated of the city's five boroughs.

The outage lasted for about five hours.

It came on the anniversary of a massive power failure in 1977 that plunged the New York skyline into darkness and triggered widespread looting and arson.

Shortly before midnight (04:00 GMT Sunday) Con Edison head John MacAvoy said all six networks which had been affected were now up and running.

He said the problem appeared to have originated at a substation, but the cause was being investigated.  See Also United States of America Looting, Arson As Major Power Outage Hits New York

The widespread power cut extended from Fifth Avenue west to the Hudson River, and from West 42nd north to 72nd Street, the fire department said.

It put street lights and traffic lights out of action and forced the evacuation of buildings across the borough.

Mayor Bill de Blasio said the New York Police Department had confirmed there was no foul play. "This was a mechanical issue," he wrote on Twitter

Alex Hammerli, 26, was on his way to a bar when the blackout began.

"No subway for 45 blocks and half the trains not running. It's kind of annoying. I'm also surprised that people aren't unleashing their crazy [side] yet. The cops are just trying to shut down the roads," he told the BBC.

At least 26 people, including a prominent journalist and several foreigners, have been killed in an attack on a hotel in southern Somalia.

A suicide bomber rammed a car containing explosives into the Asasey hotel in the port of Kismayo, and gunmen then stormed the building.

Journalist Hodan Nalayeh, 43, and her husband Farid were among the dead.

Islamist group al-Shabab has claimed the attack, the worst to hit Kismayo since they were forced out in 2012.

A local politician, three Kenyans, three Tanzanians, two Americans and one Briton were also killed, authorities say.

There is chaos inside, I saw several dead bodies carried from the scene and people are fleeing from the nearby buildings," one witness, Hussein Muktar, said during the attack.

It took 12 hours for authorities to regain control over the hotel.

Regional President Ahmed Mohamed put the death toll at 26 with more than 50 people wounded. Three attackers died in the raid while one was captured, BBC reports.

Nigeria's former military Head of State, General Yakubu Gowon (retd.) said he and other concerned Nigerians begged the former speaker of the House of Representatives, Ghali Umar Na’Abba and former Senate President, Pius Anyim, not to impeach former President Olusegun Obasanjo in other to sustain democracy in the country and save his successors from suffering the same fate.

“If the action of the legislature which was to embarrass Chief Obasanjo was allowed to be implemented, those who succeeded him would have faced similar fate,” Gowon said.

Gowon, who spoke at the inaugural public lecture tagged, “Nation Building or Nation Fragmentation: Reflection on 20 years of Post- Military Rule in Nigeria”, in honour of the late Major General Emmanuel Olumuyiwa Abisoye, organized by the Major General Emmanuel Olumuyiwa Abisoye Foundation in partnership with the University of Abuja, noted that the role he and General Abdulsalami Abubakar, Ernest Shonekon, among other prominent Nigerians played ensured Obasanjo completed his tenure.

“I can see Alhaji Ghali Na’Abba here and I can assure you that we had some very important discussions and I know that we had to appeal to him and the President of the Senate not to impeach Obasanjo and of course, because of the respect they had for us, they listened to us.

"If we had allowed them to impeach the president at that time of our democracy, no president in Nigeria would have escaped harassment. So, I thank you very much for listening to us,” the former military ruler added.

Community police volunteers in Bauchi

At least five hundred thousand volunteers from across the 774 local government areas of Nigeria and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) are being prepared to assist the Nigeria Police Force for a community policing programme initiated by the Presidency in collaboration with the state governors.

This followed the proposal of the federal government and the 36 state governors to recruit the N-Power volunteers for the community policing to tackle the shortage of manpower in the police.

The Chairman of the Nigeria Governors’ Forum (NGF) and Ekiti State Governor, Kayode Fayemi, had after a meeting with President Muhammadu Buhari penultimate Friday, said plans were on to use N-power beneficiaries to kick-start community policing in the country.

Speaking on the community policing, the Senior Special Assistant to the president on job creation and youth employment, Mr. Afolabi Imoukhuede, said they had supplied data to the governors' forum and the Inspector General of Police, Mohammed Adamu, on the volunteers.

He said two batches of the N-Power programme, numbering 500,000 scattered across the 774 local government areas of the country are ready for community policing.

“We are working with the governors because we have supplied the data to them and to the IG of police.

“We know the security challenges we have and we also know the challenges and limitations of the Nigeria Police Force, we know that they wanted to recruit another 10,000 but the governors felt as Chief Security Officers (CSOs) of their states, 10,000 in the whole of Nigeria is small and how many are you going to give every state?

“So they thought, we have N-Power volunteers that are community based, the beauty of this programme is that it is so transformational because they impact their community where they reside unlike the NYSC where you are yanked from your base and taken somewhere else.

“That’s the beauty of the N-Power that the governors saw. These are foot soldiers for community policing. There’s no state that has less than 10,000. Some even have more than that. Osun, for example has 17,000 and Abuja here; we have 14,000. So divide it into local governments,” he said.

He said the community policing proposal was an opportunity to engage the N-Power volunteers.

“That will now become an exit program. This is something that we have marketed to the governors and to the MDAs. “In the last three years or so, the federal government has been investing directly in lives, these people should be like ‘your right of first refusal’,” he said.

On when the community policing would be launched, he said, “we don’t have a date yet as the governors are still in discussions with the police command and other security agencies on the modalities.”

The breakdown of the volunteers, according to a document  sighted by Daily Trust showed that Abia has 11,285; FCT 14,116; Adamawa 11,620; Akwa Ibom 12,278; Anambra 14,903; Bauchi 13,075, Bayelsa 10,561; Benue 18,000; Borno 12,766; Cross River 11,012; Delta 17,810; Ebonyi 10,561 and Edo 12,340.

Further breakdown showed that Ekiti has 10,563; Enugu 16,542; Gombe 10,909; Imo 12,394; Jigawa 11,365; Kaduna 18,000; Kano 18002; Katsina 13,313; Kebbi 10,559; Kogi 12,211; Kwara 13,154; Lagos 17,998 and Nasarawa State 12,504.

It revealed that Niger has 12,776; Ogun 15,563; Ondo 13,460; Osun 17,999; Oyo 18,001; Plateau 11,700, Rivers 17,987; Sokoto 10,903; Taraba 10,914; 11,296 and Zamfara has a total of 10,560 beneficiaries.

The presidential aide said monthly, the federal government spends N15 billion on the payment of allowances of the volunteers.

“For the batch one, they started earning from December 2016, we invested N72bn annually just for batch one, aside from the gadget that they got. Just even the direct investment in our people, N30,000 by 200,000, that’s N6 billion every month.

"Since August last year the wage bill has moved from N6 billion monthly to N15bn because they are now 500,000 volunteers. We don’t owe anyone and the money is paid directly to the beneficiaries, no third party,” he said.

Dana Air has apologised to its customers over the disruption of their flights on different routes between July 11 and July 13.

The airline tendered the apology in statement issued by its Media and Communications Manager, Mr Kingsley Ezenwa.

“We wish to once again reassure our guests that their safety and comfort will remain a top priority in our operations and necessarily compensations will be communicated to the affected guests,’’ Ezenwa said.

According to him, some of the airline’s scheduled flights were disrupted due to nose steering lock on one of its Abuja to Lagos flight which also made the airline to ground the aircraft in line with its strict safety standards.

He explained, “On July 11, one of our Lagos Abuja flight developed a nose wheel issue upon landing in Abuja. After a thorough assessment by our team of engineers, we decided to ground the aircraft in line with our strict stance on safety.

“Although a nose steering lock is not a defect but a mechanism to prevent damage on steering cylinder and torque link during the nose wheel turning greater than 82 (+/- 2) degrees. We sincerely wish to apologise to our guests for the delays occasioned by this incident and to also assure them that their safety comes first before any consideration in our daily operations.’’

He stated that the aircraft had been flown to Lagos for the airline’s engineers to conduct full scale checks.

Ezenwa said in the interim, Dana Air had made proper arrangements with its partner airlines to fly its passengers to their various destinations together with other serviceable aircraft in its fleet.

A major power outage on Saturday evening hit parts of New York, the commercial capital of the United States giving room for looting.

The blackout, which occurred in Midtown Manhattan, the city’s economic and administrative centre, disrupted traffic light, elevator and subway services.

This resulted in heavy traffic gridlock in affected streets and avenues, leaving many commuters stranded.

Local media reports say the outage occurred just before 7 p.m. (midnight Nigerian time) following a fire outbreak at a power substation on West 49th Street.

Con Edison, the city’s leading electricity service provider, said no fewer than 45,000 customers were without power in the affected area.

In a tweet, the Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) said various underground stations were affected.

It added that trains were bypassing stations affected by the power failure, and that service into Manhattan from areas such as Brooklyn, Queens and the Bronx, would be limited.

The Mayor of New York, Mr Bill de Blasio, said the city’s emergency management agency was working with the police and fire service to respond to affected areas.

Coincidentally, Saturday marked the 42nd anniversary of a major blackout in 1977 which affected much of the city for 48 hours.

Reports say that incident resulted in widespread looting, arson and other criminal activities.

As of the time of filing this report at 8.30 pm (1.30 am in Nigeria) power had not been restored, but Con Edison said it was working hard to remedy the situation as soon as possible.

The Governor of New York, Mr. Andrew Cuomo, issued a statement saying he was hopeful power would be restored by midnight (5 am Nigerian time).

Later in a live television interview, Cuomo said he had ordered the deployment of more police officers  and paratroopers to help in traffic control and tighten security in the city.

He said the spread of the outage from the substation where it started showed that the power company failed to install circuit breaker.

The incident triggered social media reports of ordinary citizens directing traffic at some intersections.

The New York Fire Department said it received reports of people stuck in elevators on the Upper West Side and subway passengers stuck on trains.

Several events, including an ongoing concert by American pop star, Jennifer Lopez, at Madison Square Garden, one of the affected places, were cancelled, reports News Agency of Nigeria.

Abdullahi Bello Bodejo, President of the Miyetti Allah Association, addressing a press conference in Abuja on Thursday.

Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria (MACBAN) has condemned and distance itself from the killing of Mrs Funke Olakunrin, daughter of the leader of Afenifere, Pa Reuben Fasoranti.

A statement issued by Mr Baba Ngelzarma, the National Secretary of the association on Saturday in Abuja, said MACBAN commiserated with Fasoranti on the death of his daughter.

He said the deceased was reportedly shot on Friday along the Kajola-Ore road in Ondo State by those the police described as bandits.

Ngelzarma said, “The association expresses our sincere heartfelt condolence to the family of the deceased."

He added that the association was shocked on how a section of the media in collaboration with elements in the country is using the opportunity to fuel crisis in Nigeria.

He regretted that these elements continue a negative profiling of Fulani for their total annihilation by jumping into a mischievous conclusion that she was killed by herdsmen, News Agency of Nigeria reports.

“We strongly condemn this very unprofessional, unpatriotic and callous news reportage patterns that have been employed and deployed against our people by the section of the media.

“We are calling on security agencies to swing into action and unravel the perpetrators to bring them to justice in the shortest possible time,’’ the scribe said.

“As a tradition, we do not deal with hearsay. We act on facts and raw data. The commission will not allow anybody to drag its name and reputation into the mud for ill-motive reasons.”
