The Hausa-Fulani community of Southern Kaduna has asked the Kaduna State House of Assembly to enact a law for the creation of chiefdoms for them in places like Kasuwan Magani, Kachia and Zango Urban, which they claim to have founded.

The group also demanded a law that would put an end to Hausa-Fulani being referred to as settlers, adding that they were the original owners of Southern Kaduna.

Leader of the group and Chief Imam of Kafanchan, Kabir Kasim, disclosed this in Kaduna on Sunday at a meeting.

Kasim said, "There are about 30 ethnic groups in the eight local government areas that make up Southern Kaduna, among which include: Hausa-Fulani, Jaba (Ham), Atyap (Kataf), Kadara (Adara), Baju (Kaje) in addition to Nigerians from other parts of the country. The Muslims constitute about 40% while the Christians have 60% of the population.

"Most of the major towns in Southern Kaduna were founded by Hausa Fulani. For example, Zango, Kachia, Unguwan Rimi, Zankuwa, Kagarko, Jere and Jama’a (Kafanchan). Hausa-Fulani are the largest single tribe in Southern Kaduna. In spite of this, they are always targets.

"Muslims are always referred to as settlers, while it is historically on record that Southern Kaduna was founded by Fulani tribe called  Kachechere."

He said major Christian tribes laying claim to the area originally migrated from other Northern states like Kano, Bauchi and Taraba.

But in a swift reaction, President of Southern Kaduna Peoples Union, Jonathan Asake, while speaking with SaharaReporters, said the agenda of Governor Nasir el-Rufai was to carry out ethnic cleansing in Southern Kaduna.

He added that the action and inaction of the governor had given impetus to the brazen demands by the Fulani community.

"They can go and claim Kano because most of these people causing these havoc come from Kano, Sokoto, Katsina and Jigawa. They are not indigenes of Southern Kaduna.

"El-Rufai is giving them the latitude to cause this problem when they said they want their own chiefdom. It is not chiefdom, it is emirate they are looking for.

"I want to let him know that before him there were governors and after him there will be governors who will bring peace we need in Kaduna State."

He also denied allegations made by Governor el-Rufai that some leaders of Southern Kaduna demanded gratification from him.

The Centre for Human Rights and Social Justice has given the Nigeria Police Force a 14-day ultimatum to arrest and begin trial of Sunday Shodipe, a serial killer, who escaped from the custody of the Oyo State Police Command.

Shodipe was arrested by the police in Oyo but escaped from the cell to kill another person in the state.

SaharaReporters had reported that the incident occurred on Saturday when the fugitive sneaked into the room of a woman identified as Funmilayo (Iya Ibeji) and smashed her head with an object believed to be a cutlass.

The suspect, Sunday Shodipe.

The rights group also called on the Police Service Commission to set up an independent panel of enquiry to investigate the matter, saying that the plea of the Oyo State Commissioner of Police, Joe Nwachukwu Enwonwu, was not tenable in any sane clime.

Executive Chairman of CHRSJ stressed that the Commissioner of Police should be directed to immediately produce the escapee, adding that all police officers in charge of Shodipe's case should be arrested and charged for negligence and dereliction of duty.

The group said, “The police should be alive to their constitutional responsibility of protecting the lives and property of the citizenry and as well arresting of criminals.

“If the 14 days ultimatum lapse without rearresting of Shodipe, CHRSJ would not hesitate to approach a court of competent jurisdiction to seek payment of damages to the family of all the victims of serial killings in the local government area of the state.”

Human rights activist and National President of Revolutionary Lawyers' Forum, Mr Tope Akinyode, has said that he would institute contempt proceedings against Nigeria's Chief of Army Staff, Tukur Buratai, and Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Mr Abubakar Malami (SAN), over their refusal to obey court orders directing the release of a detained soldier, Lance Corporal Martins Idakpini.

The soldier was arrested and detained shortly after condemning Nigeria's military chiefs including Buratai in a video over their poor handling of the fight against Boko Haram terrorists in the Northern part of the country.

On July 22, 2020, Justice Chikere of the Federal High Court, Abuja, ordered the release of Idakpani after his lawyer argued an ex parte application.

Despite serving Buratai and Malami copies of the court orders, they have refused to release the detained soldier.

Announcing plans for the contempt proceedings on Monday in a statement, Akinyode said, "We have served copies of the court order on both the Chief of Staff and the AGF. Also, I have personally discussed with the AGF over the issue and he assured me that the court order would be complied with, however, the reverse has been the case.

"Lance Corporal Martins has been brutalised, subjected to a great deal of dehumanising treatment, denied access to food and has therefore developed ulcer.

"The detained soldier has also been secretly moved to Sokoto to face a court martial and the military is illegally forcing a lawyer on him.

"We have considered the available legal options and since all the civil overtures to ensure compliance with the court order has broken down, we shall immediately proceed to court tomorrow and commence a committal for contempt proceedings against the Chief of Army Staff and the AGF."

Some public secondary schools in Imo State are reportedly charging students N2,000 per subject to provide them with answers to questions in the ongoing West African Senior School Certificate Examination.

The school owners met with students before the commencement of the examination where they informed them that they would provide the answers if each student paid N2,000 per subject.

A relative of the students, who spoke with our correspondent, said the schools claimed that majority of the students might fail because of the Coronavirus lockdown and unpreparedness for the examination.

The relative also said the school claimed that the money would be given to each invigilator monitoring the examination.

“The school management held meetings with their students and it was agreed they pay the N2,000 to settle WAEC invigilators to give them way for exam cheats.

“School principals in public secondary schools in Imo State are charging WAEC students N2,000 per subject as sorting fees to settle WAEC invigilators.

“They said the money will be to allow their students to engage in exam malpractices in the various subjects because of their unpreparedness for the exams caused by COVID-19 closure of schoolse since March 2020,” the relative said as he pleaded anonymity.

The relative stated that some schools in the rural area of the state wire collecting a lesser fee from the students.

“Other public secondary schools in rural areas are paying N1,500 against N2,000 paid in urban public schools.

“The schools came up with the plan so they can collect money from the students.

“The public schools are to generate over N300,000 per day and the maximum they will give WAEC invigilators will be N50,000 while the balance will be for the school management,” he added.

The examination, which started today, August 17, is scheduled to end on September 7, 2020.
