The management of the University of Jos in Plateau State has ordered students on campus to vacate their hostels with immediate effect until further notice because of insecurity.

The university also stated it had suspended all academic activities for the second time thereby stalling the 2019/2020 session pending a return of normalcy.

The institution’s actions were contained in a statement signed by its Registrar, Monday Danjem, on Friday.

The statement reads in part, “Following the risky and precarious insecurity situation in Jos, the imposition of dusk to dawn curfew, which has affected the academic activities including the suspension of Second Semester Examinations for the 2019/2020 Academic Session in the University of Jos, the University continued to experience the loss of lives of some of our students.

“Consequently, the Management of the University of Jos, after an emergency meeting with the Committee of Deans, Directors and Provost on Friday, 20th August, 2021, has approved the suspension of Examinations for the Second Semester 2019/2020 Academic Session and all Academic Activities in the University until further notice subject to ratification by the Senate of the university.

“The management has also directed the closure of all Students Hostels until further notice.

“Management’s decision was taken following an Emergency Meeting of Management and the Committee of Deans, Directors and Provost of the university held on Friday 20th August 2021 in view of the intensified killings of students around the University of Jos area shortly after the relaxation of the 24-hour curfew in the state on Monday, 19th August, 2021, and also considering that it will be risky to delay security measures to stop the brutal killings of students and protect the lives of students, and also considering the high risk involved in having a Senate meeting in the present risky and precarious security situation in which the brutal killings of students and staff of the University seem to be on the rise.

“All students of the university resident in the various Hostels are to return home or safer places until normalcy is restored. Students are also advised to use safe means of transportation to their respective safer destinations.

“We passionately appeal that a joint patrol team of armed soldiers and other law enforcement agencies should beef up security and ensure that students are adequately protected as they evacuate their hostels to safe destinations; the life or security of every student matters to the management of the University of Jos and other stakeholders.

“Students are to note that adequate notice will be given to them when normalcy is fully restored in Jos and environs to enable them to return for the completion of their second-semester examinations and other academic activities.”

The Inspector-General of Police, Usman Baba, has ordered the transfer of the case of the murdered Super TV Chief Executive Officer, Usifo Ataga, from Lagos to Abuja.

SaharaReporters learnt that the IGP ordered that the case be taken up by the Force Criminal Investigation Department, while the murder prime suspect, 21-year-old Chidinma Ojukwu, would also be brought to Abuja.

“IGP has approved the transfer of Usifo Ataga’s murder case to Abuja. It will be handled by the FCID,” a top source told SaharaReporters.

SaharaReporters had on Wednesday reported that the family alleged that the Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Hakeem Odumosu, might be shielding the killers of their son, with the police’s suspicious handling of the matter.

They had claimed that Chidinma, the prime suspect in Ataga’s murder, was arraigned in a Yaba Magistrate Court without the family being informed.

The family of the murdered Super TV CEO had last Sunday hired human rights’ lawyer, Mike Ozekhome, SAN, to ensure that justice was served for their slain son.

Ataga’s family in a letter to Ozekhome also accused the police of stifling efforts to ensure those behind the Super TV CEO murder were brought to book.

The family, in the letter, accused the Lagos CP of “attempting to protect the killers of Ataga.”

The Usifo family also decried the alleged comfortable movement of Chidinma from prison to court and from court back to the prison.

The family said Chidinma was moved in an Uber ride without handcuffs.

The family alleged that the man who had claimed to be Chidinma’s father and was charged for obstructing police investigation was her (Chidinma) “sugar daddy” and not her biological father.

They had faulted the N1million bail granted to Chidinma’s father and one Babalola Disu, another suspect in the case by the magistrate court.

The family had alleged that Disu was “highly suspected to have carried out the murder”.

Ataga’s family premised its suspicion on information they received to the effect that Disu’s short rental apartment was directly opposite the apartment where Mr Ataga was killed.

The family, however, urged Ozekhome and his chambers to take up the case and see that justice is served through a very professional prosecution of all those involved in the crime.

Ozekhome also confirmed that he is now representing Ataga’s family

In a statement on Sunday, Ozekhome had said the bereaved family hired him “to protect and defend the interests of the Ataga family and his teeming friends, admirers, kinsmen, and business associates, to ensure that justice is duly served in the matter.”

Yoruba socio-political group, Afenifere, has said moves by President Muhammadu Buhari to retrieve 368 grazing reserves in 25 out of the 36 states in the country are a waste of taxpayers’ money and an ethnic agenda.

In a statement issued by the group's Secretary-General, Chief Sola Ebiseni, Afenifere said moves by Buhari did not come as a surprise to the group as Buhari never ceased to be wasting taxpayers’ scarce resources on a programme which lacked capacity.

The Afenifere statement partly reads, “The approval by President Muhammadu Buhari to review, with dispatch, 368 Grazing Reserves across allegedly 25 states in the country to determine the levels of encroachment did not surprise Nigerians.

“It does not also matter that having felt the pulse of the nation in his interview with the Arise television in June, the President is still wasting taxpayers’ scarce resources on a programme whose conception lacks all conceivable growth capacity.

“It is instructive that the recommendation and implementation committee is headed by Professor Ibrahim Gambari, the Chief of Staff to the President who, in conjunction with Professor Attahiru Jega, during the first term of Buhari, presented a “Memorandum On Pastoralist-Farmers’ Conflicts And the search for peaceful Resolution” published in January 2018, which contained the same recommendations now being foisted on the nation.

“They have submitted, among other recommendations that “it is clear that Nigeria and indeed Africa have to plan towards the transformation of pastoralism into settled forms of animal husbandry.”

“The establishment of grazing reserves provides the opportunity for practising a more limited form of pastoralism and is, therefore, a pathway towards a more settled form of animal husbandry. Grazing reserves are areas of land demarcated, set aside and reserved for exclusive or semi-exclusive use by pastoralists”

Ebiseni noted that “Currently, Nigeria has a total of 417 grazing reserves all over the country, out of which only about 113 have been gazetted. Thus, the present policy of the Buhari administration on grazing reserves is the implementation of the script by the Fulani intelligentsia.

“The recommendations which pandered to deceptive national solutions to orchestrated farmers/herders’ clash, nonetheless reek of the odiferous stench of ethnic agenda for settlement of the Fulani in the ancestral lands of other ethnic nationalities.

“For the umpteenth time, let the President be told that the constitution which he reveres relentlessly and the Land Use Act which derives equal force therefrom, extol the majesty of the people over their land.

“Even the Governor who holds the land in his state in trust for the people cannot dispossess any citizen thereof, except for proven overriding public interest through the due process of law.

“The current exercise is not only a waste of taxpayers’ money but also a sweet pipe dream in a fool’s paradise. Every herder has a state of origin. Let the governments of the respective states make arrangements for a settled life for them (the herders) in the territory where the culture is fully appreciated.”

Former Deputy Governor of Imo State, Gerald Irona, has debunked claims that he was arrested by the anti-graft agency, Economic and Financial Crimes Commission.

The Peoples Democratic Party’s chieftain said the news was “false in its entirety and has no iota of truth in it,” saying he was relaxing in his residence.

Gerald Irona

This was contained in a statement released by Irona’s Adviser on Communications, Walter Duru, obtained by SaharaReporters on Friday.

Media was flooded earlier today with the reports of Irona’s arrest by EFCC officials in connection with corruption allegations at the Nnamdi Azikwe International Airport, Abuja on Thursday.

The statement reads, “Our attention has been drawn to a malicious report on some online media platforms alleging that immediate past Deputy Governor of Imo State, Engr. Gerald Irona was arrested by operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission-EFCC.

“The report claimed that the former Deputy Governor was “intercepted at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja and taken to the EFCC headquarters for interrogation.”

“The writer further alleged that the former Deputy Governor was involved in the collection of N400m monthly from the account of the Imo State Oil Producing Areas Development Commission-ISOPADEC, during the administration of Chief Emeka Ihedioha; adding that the former Deputy Governor was also under investigation for allegedly mismanaging N5b counterpart funds for the Rural Access Mobility Project (RAMP). The report added that the former Deputy Governor did not return his passport to the EFCC after using it last year.

“Ordinarily, one would not have bothered responding to the mindless falsehood, but to put the records straight, we respond thus:

“The report is false in its entirety and has no iota of truth in it. Former Deputy Governor of Imo State, Hon. (Engr) Gerald Irona has no case with the EFCC.

“The fact that the writer neither contacted the EFCC Spokesman nor the Spokesman of the former Deputy Governor for confirmation clearly shows the intention of the sponsors of the false report.”

In the statement, Irona declared that such reports were fabricated to tarnish the image of the Imo politician, adding that the public should reject it.

He also disclosed there was ongoing legal consultation with his legal representatives on the falsehood of the news to guide what his next action would be.

“For the avoidance of doubt, immediate past Deputy Governor of Imo State, Hon. (Engr.) Gerald Irona was neither invited nor arrested by operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission-EFCC or any other Law Enforcement Agency in Nigeria.

“The former Deputy Governor, Engr. Irona is not under any form of investigation whatsoever. He is relaxing in his residence and is not arrested, invited or wanted by any law enforcement agency or any authority whatsoever, within and/or outside Nigeria,” the statement added.

The Lagos State University has claimed that “men of the underworld” were responsible for the death of a students’ activist, Nurudeen Alowonle, popularly known as Omomeewa, near the university’s gate.

The varsity also explained that Alawonle left LASU campus past 8pm despite being released by the disciplinary panel he came to face at 2pm.

Nurudeen Alowonle 'Omomeewa'

This was contained in a press statement on Friday by LASU’s Coordinator, Centre for Information Press and Public Relations, Ademola Adekoya, titled “Attack on former student, Nurudeen Alowonle and a staff: LASU management’s position.”

SaharaReporters had earlier today reported that some attackers shot dead the activist only a few hours after he faced the LASU disciplinary panel for alleged admission racketeering and possession of official documents.

While narrating how Alowonle was killed, the varsity’s spokesperson said because “it was late in the day”, Alowonle “trekked several metres away from the gate” and was “shot by men of the underworld.”

He said, “The university management received with great shock, report of an attack on a former student of the University, Mr. Nurudeen Alowonle, A.K.A Omomeewa, and a staff of the University, Mr. Waheed Majekodunmi, a Senior Assistant Registrar, which led to the untimely death of the former. The incident took place in the evening of Wednesday 18th August, 2021 outside the University campus, along the Egbeda-Igando Road.

“However, with the benefit of investigations carried out so far, we hereby state the true position as follows: 1. Mr. Nurudeen Alowonle, a.k.a Omomeewa was a former student of the University, but was yet to receive his certificate due to an ongoing disciplinary case that he was facing in the university. The panel presiding over his case began sitting in 2019.

“Two, the case continued until 2020 but the panel could not sit due to the Covid-19 pandemic-enforced lockdown, which took the larger part of the year. He was however invited by the panel, alongside several other students who had ongoing disciplinary cases, on Wednesday to defend himself.

“Omomeewa appeared before the panel that same day as scheduled. He was in fact, the first student attended to by the panel, and his case was concluded before 2pm. Since leaving the panel before 2pm, Omomeewa ostensibly remained on the university campus until late in the evening during which time he met up with Mr. Waheed Majekodunmi.

“The duo were said to have hobnobbed at the University Senior Staff Club until past 8pm in the evening after which they left together through the Iba Gate of the University for their destinations.

“Unable to get vehicles at the school junction as it was late in the day, the duo were said to have trekked several metres away from the gate ostensibly in search of a vehicle. Unfortunately, they were attacked by men of the underworld, dispossessed of their valuables and shot.

“The Staff - Mr. Majekodunmi- was lucky to have escaped with the gunshot wounds and eventually got helped by passersby to a nearby hospital, but sadly, Omomeewa did not survive the attack. His body was said to have been deposited in a mortuary in Lagos, while the injured staff is currently receiving treatment at the University Health Centre and responding well to treatment.

“At the moment, the university security department is working with the Security Agencies to investigate the sad incident with the aim of bringing the perpetrators to book.”

Before his assassination, Nurudeen, a leader in the Education Rights Campaign (ERC), had described the university’s probe as an attempt to frame him for being an outspoken opposition to the management of the school, especially regarding the administration's anti-student and anti-worker policies.

“As everyone would recall, there has been an attempt to frame me up on a case of admission racketeering. This is retribution for my principled opposition to the anti-student and anti-worker policies of the University administration in my capacity as a leading member of the Education Rights Campaign (ERC) and a renowned student activist on campus,” Nurudeen had written in a press release.

ERC is a platform of activists organised on Nigerian campuses to campaign for free education.

SaharaReporters had earlier today reported that LASU students protested the killing of Nurudeen.

The protesting students had converged on the school gate to express their displeasure with the death of the students' leader.

The Osun State Police Command on Friday, confirmed the killing of five persons by unknown gunmen suspected to be bandits when they attacked the Yoruba ancestral town, Ile-Ife, in the state.

The Spokesperson of the command, SP Yemisi Opalola, who gave the confirmation, said that the victims were on motorcycles on their way to their farms when they were ambushed by the bandits and killed.

The police spokesperson noted that consequently, the state Commissioner of Police, Olawale Olokode, had deployed a police tactical team and officers to forestall breakdown of law and order in the area.

She also added that investigation had commenced on the circumstance behind the killing, assuring that perpetrators of the heinous crime would be brought to justice.

Opalola said that the Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi had also waded into the matter by appealing to his subjects to maintain peace, as a way of preventing the situation from escalating.

The News Agency of Nigeria learnt that the farmers were ambushed and killed while passing through a town in Ile-Ife to their farm.

The killings, however, generated tension in Ile-Ife owing to fear of a reprisal attack from the people of Modakeke, a neighbouring town, thus resulting in many Ile-Ife residents hurriedly closing their businesses.

Ile-Ife and Modakeke communities have a long history of communal clashes, which had led to loss of many lives and destruction of property.

Nemesis has caught up with two groups of bandits in the Giwa Local Government Area of Kaduna State when nine of their fellows were killed as a result of gun battle over sharing of ransom money.

A statement issued by the Commissioner for Internal security and Home Affairs, Samuel Aruwan, on Friday said credible human intelligence networks informed the Kaduna State Government of the development, which was further corroborated by security agencies.

The statement disclosed that Intelligence sources had reported that a notorious bandit known as ‘Godon Mota’ stormed Garke village last Wednesday with his gang and clashed with a rival bandit group, leading to the killing of nine members.

The cause of the fratricidal face-off is yet unclear, but was said to revolve around a disagreement over sharing of accumulated ransoms, during which one of the groups felt cheated.

“Acting Governor Dr Hadiza Balarabe noted the report with thanks, and urged security agencies to sustain pressure towards the apprehending of criminal elements in the general area.

“Investigations and security patrols are ongoing,” the statement declared.
