Thirty members of the #RevolutionNow movement have been freed after spending five nights in police detention.

The 30 persons were arrested on October 1 in Lagos while taking part in a peaceful demonstration demanding better governance from the President Muhammadu Buhari administration.

The police in Lagos arrested and charged them to court for unlawful assembly and gathering likely to cause breach of peace despite no violence recorded during the demonstration.

The protesters were granted bail on October 2 but the Chief Magistrate refused to sign their bail bond, forcing them to remain in custody since that period until Tuesday when they were eventually freed.

One of the leaders of the movement, who confirmed the release of the protesters to SaharaReporters, said, "We have secured their release, all of them have been freed and are on their way home."

The protesters, looking undeterred, promised not to be broken by the police as they urged Nigerians to join the movement to regain the country from looters.

The event was organised by the National Peace Committee led by former Nigerian Head of State, Gen. Abdulsalam Abubakar.

He said, "I would like to make it clear to all of us as citizens of this country and for the players who are going to be on the pitch on Saturday to contest for one single seat of the governor of Ondo State for the next four years.

"I would also like to call on you to see the signing of this peace accord as not just a mere ceremony or formality but a commitment by all of you.

"In fact, see it as a covenant which you all would be responsible for the outcome at the end of the day. Let all of us obey the rules of the game.

"There can only be one winner and that winner has already be ordained by Almighty God before the vote is even cast. We don't know the person yet.

"So, as contestants tell the citizens of Ondo State what you can't do and what you will do for them. Their votes must count as INEC has assured us that every vote must count.

"Talk to your supporters to remain peaceful, do not allow thuggery to take place anywhere not only near the polling booths even in the entire state throughout the duration of the election on Saturday."

Amnesty International has said that the Nigerian Government was yet to show convincing commitment to bringing an end to the lawless activities of personnel of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad of the Nigeria Police Force.

AI said Nigerian authorities had failed to tackle the impunity enjoyed by SARS, whose brutality and corruption was becoming increasingly brazen despite repeated pledges to reform the police squad and investigate violations committed by its officers.

Reacting to the latest move by the police to reform SARS and bar them from engaging on routine patrol, AI described the act as another lame attempt by the authorities.

“This is yet another lame attempt to rein in this unit of the Nigerian police which is notorious for the widespread torture and other ill-treatment of Nigerians. We have seen from bitter experience that past investigations into violations were either never carried out or marred by irregularities. To date, the Nigerian authorities have yet to show a genuine commitment to ending the lawless activities of SARS,” said Osai Ojigho, Director of Amnesty International Nigeria.

“Such abuses will only be prevented when SARS officers are held to account for their actions and face disciplinary or criminal punishment if they are found to be responsible for human rights violations,” Ojigho added.

See Also Police Seven Times Within Three Years, Police Announced Measures To Reform SARS Without Result

AI recalled that In August 2018, the Nigerian Government set up a judicial commission of inquiry to investigate the activities of SARS and make recommendations for reform.

It noted that the commission’s report had yet to be made public almost two years after the panel submitted its findings to the government.

“The authorities have an obligation to protect Nigerians and bring to justice those who violate their human rights.

“Unless the authorities follow through with their promises to reform SARS and end the frequent extortion and ill-treatment of Nigerians, their empty words will be just that,” said Ojigho.

Amnesty added that the government must empower oversight bodies including the Police Service Commission, Committee Against Torture and the National Human Rights Commission to investigate and initiate prosecution of police officers, who are involved in the violation of human rights.

SaharaReporters earlier reported how the Inspect-General of Police, Adamu Mohammed, was forced to issue a new directive on the operations of SARS following a public outcry calling for the end of unit.

Part of the directives include the ban of SARS operatives in engaging on routine stop-and-search, checking of citizens’ phones and gadgets without approval as well as the incessant harassment of citizens.

This latest directive makes it the seventh time in four years that the police will be moving to curb the highhandedness and extrajudicial activities of SARS operatives.

A middle-aged woman, Aishatu Umaru, is in police custody in Adamawa State for causing the death of her step-daughter.

Spokesperson for the police in the state, DSP Suleiman Nguroje, told SaharaReporters on Tuesday in Yola, the state capital, that Mrs Umaru was arrested on Thursday when neighbours alerted the police of the alleged murder of Walida, her step-daughter.

Nguroje said Umaru was arrested in Yola town for allegedly maltreating and causing the death of her step-daughter.

He said, "The suspect is undergoing interrogation at the Criminal Investigation Department after which she would be charged to court."

However, the suspect denied causing the death of her step-daughter, saying, "The child had been sick with malaria without medical attention because my husband refused to provide money for treatment and feeding.

"I did not kill her. What happened was that Walida liked leaving the house and going to a neighbour's house, so I sent one of my children to call her.

"When she came back, I used my finger to push her on the forehead as a sign of rebuke, unfortunately she fell down.

"Knowing that she was not feeling fine, I rushed to my brother's house to inform him about the girl's condition unfortunately he was not at home.

"When I returned to the house, I met one of my neighbours who told me that the girl had already died. My husband who caused all these was arrested with me but was released after a day in custody."
