As Muslim faithful across the world prepare to mark the end of Ramadan fast this weekend, Islamic scholars have advised adherents of the religion to observe Eid-El Fitri prayers in their houses and avoid congregation at various prayer grounds.

The scholars said this was in compliance with the two-week extension of the gradual easing of the lockdown.

as announced by the Presidential Task Force on COVID-19, Boss Mustapha, on Monday.

Director of Muslim Rights Concern, Prof Ishaq Akintola, who spoke with SaharaReporters, said Muslim faithful should be role models in observing health protocol in curtailing the COVID-19 pandemic.

He called on Muslims across the country to observe their prayers in their homes, saying that God can answer prayers anywhere.

Akintola admonished them to celebrate Eid-el-Fitri in a limited way and avoid unnecessary gathering.

He said, "As we know that it affected Easter and it was celebrated in a limited way and in the same manner the Muslims should celebrate Eid-el-Fitri in a limited way. Our prayers can still be done inside our houses. We are complying and want others to do so.

"If we say we want to go out and congregate, we would endanger our own lives and other Nigerians because after the prayer, we are still going back to the society."

The Islamic scholar said disobedience to government in Islam is a sin, adding that the battle is for the whole mankind and humanity to come together to win the war against the virus.

On his own part, National Cheif Imam, Al-habibiyyah Islamic Society, Fuad Adeyemi, said the outbreak of COVID-19 had broadened and enriched  their belief in the act of giving to the needy.

He said they had cultivated the habit of giving foodstuff and cash to the poor before the outbreak of the virus as part of their religion obligations.

Adeyemi explained that the reward of praying was the same anywhere in the world and the mosque can be anywhere so far it was not in the toilet or burial ground.

He called on government to create more awareness and ensure strict enforcement of the lockdown order for erring religious leaders fond of flouting the rules.

Recall that Christians in most parts of the world celebrated Easter in their houses as churches were closed and annual pilgrimages cancelled as a result of the lockdown.

Nigerian students and prospective members of the National Youth Service Corps have urged the Nigerian Government to scrap the NYSC scheme, saying it has outlived its usefulness.

Speaking with SaharaReporters on how the outbreak of Coronavirus had affected their mobilization for the compulsory one-year national service, they lamented how their inability to take part in the programme had denied them of jobs.

Following the outbreak of the virus in the country, the NYSC had abruptly ended activities at orientation camps across the country.

The Director-General of the scheme, Ibrahim Shuaibu, in an interview with Economic Confidential, also said the agency had no intention to mobilize prospective corps members anytime soon, especially as the country is still grappling with the coronavirus pandemic.

A recent graduate of the University of Lagos, Zainab, urged the government to scrap the scheme, saying it was a waste of time.

She said, “They can’t mobilize now because you’d have to be in camp and there are strict rules against the social gathering. Many graduates are thinking outside the box and no longer waiting for NYSC to decide their future.

"“The government needs to scrap the NYSC because it is a waste of time and if you are not engaged before NYSC, the result you are hoping for, you

might not get it.”

Some graduates awaiting mobilization advised that the government should allow them to serve in their current state of residence.

A recent graduate of the Lagos State University, Oluwatoyin Oyetunde, who spoke on the matter, said, “Coronavirus has affected NYSC mobilization and it has caused so many problems as graduates who are supposed to have gone halfway on their NYSC journey are now confined home.

“Though some have the intention of running little businesses on their own, they can't because there is no capital to kick off the business.

“I feel the government should just allow graduates to serve in the states where they studied or live. The government should also cancel the three weeks orientation camp as we do not know when the pandemic will be over.”

Segun Ogunlade, a final year student of the University of Ibadan, said, “I think Batch A Stream 1 will go back to the orientation camp immediately after the lockdown is relaxed. I still have a feeling we might be able to go very late in the year."

Lamenting how the pandemic had caused delays in her participation in the scheme, Afolasade Ola, a student of the University of Ibadan, said, “If I can’t serve this year, it means I would have so many difficulties getting a job.

“The few people who I spoke to about job asked me if I had done my NYSC, and I told them no so they simply told me to wait until after NYSC. Delay in mobilization has affected us getting a job and the question now is what will we be doing until next year?

“I would suggest that they scrap the scheme because it has caused a lot of disorganisation for those of us that have plans for our after-school life.”

Some students suggested that the NYSC should mobilise them for the scheme but ensure prospective corps members adhere to safety guidelines and also wear facemasks.

Stephen Olaniyi, a student of the University of Ibadan, said, “I think the number of people expected at the camp should be reduced for social distancing
purposes. If the numbers of people are halved, others will have to wait.

“The ripple effect will affect other people henceforth. We'd start having to wait for six to eight months before going to serve.

“We may also be required to go for testing before reporting to camps. Corp members would be required to wear masks always. Consequently, rigorous exercises may be reduced because of breathing problems that may arise.”

Nigerians in an online poll conducted by SaharaReporters have rated President Muhammadu Buhari's handling of the COVID-19 pandemic as 'poor'.

Buhari has in recent weeks come under increasing criticism for his handling of nationwide lockdowns, decision on inter-state movement, palliatives and more.

Of the 15,100 respondents on Twitter, 75 per cent stated that he had done a poor job in managing the crisis while 25 per cent believe his performance was satisfactory.

On Facebook, 12,000 users responded with 74 per cent also rating his performance as poor while 26 per cent thought his action plan had been satisfactory.

Stanley Dike on Facebook said, "No ratings at all, Buhari is a failure already and always. He don't even know the extent at which COVID have damaged things in this country, and he has no clue what to do even if he knows. We don't have an active President in Nigeria. The only country in the world without a know how President is Nigeria."

On Twitter, @ibjnr21 said, "Most of those saying poor have always hated him because of sentiments but we that appreciate the way they handling the pandemic, we would continue to hail them for the job weldone."

Back on Facebook, Femi Nathaniel Fagoriola said, "Extremely poor, they hide under COVID-19 to steal our common wealth.
"For instance, feeding of pupils from house is fraud, sharing of palliative materials is another way of amassing wealth for themselves, just to mention few."

Muntaka Kabir Moyi also on Facebook said, "No communication with the populace, not even up to average satisfactory sharing of palliatives. No consideration of lockdown effects on the masses, no sincerity from the NCDC about the COVID-19 mitigation process, no provision of opportunity for our local herbalists to harness cure for the virus from our local herbs output."

A group, Incorporated Trustees of Empowerment for Unemployed Youth Initiative, has asked the Federal High Court in Abuja, Nigeria's capital, to order the withdrawal of Certificate of Return issued to Deputy Senate President, Ovie Omo-Agege.

In a suit filed through their lawyer, Mr Edward Omaga, the group also prayed the court for N500m damages to be slammed on Clerk of the Senate for accepting to declare Omo-Agege as Deputy Senate President after his nomination and election on June 11, 2019.

In the suit marked FHC/ABJ/CS/510/2020, the plaintiff said the lawmaker representing Delta Central Senatorial District in the National Assembly was not a competent, fit and proper person considering the alleged conviction hanging on his neck by a court in Los Angeles, California, United States on November 30, 1995.

In the judgment of the US court, the senator was allegedly sentenced to jail and suspended from law practice for two years for felony involving moral turpitude, forgery of cheques amounting to $890with which he intended to defraud the Bank of America.

Apart from Omo-Agege, also joined as defendants in the suit are the Clerk of the National Assembly, the All Progressives Congress and Independent National Electoral Commission.

In the affidavit in support of the originating summons deposed to by Comrade Solomon Adodo, a rights activist, the group also prayed the court for an order of perpetual injunction restraining Omo-Agege from representing Delta Central Senatorial District or such other similar offices in the Federal Republic of Nigeria on the ground that he is not competent, fit and proper person considering the conviction hanging on his neck in the US court.

In a report on January 20, 2020, SaharaReporters had revealed how Omo-Agege was suspended from practicing law in California, United States, over a case of forgery and fraud.

The document revealed that Omo-Agege committed the offence in 1995, was found guilty and suspended from practicing for two years.

He was also placed on probation and mandated to take a multi-state professional responsibility examination before being admitted back to the US bar, according to the court document seen.

After being arrested, a four-count amended charge was filed against Omo-Agege in the Los Angeles County Superior Court with Case number BA111331.

After his conviction, the Delta State-born lawyer returned to Nigeria where he soon delved into politics.

To have a smooth sail, he removed Augustine from his name and adopted his middle name, Ovie, perhaps in order to avoid any sort of linkage to his criminal past in California.  See Also Exclusive EXCLUSIVE: How United States Court Suspended Nigeria’s Deputy Senate President, Omo-Agege, From Law Practice Over Forgery Of $890 Cheque

Having served as a commissioner under the administration of former Delta State governor, James Ibori, who was jailed in the United Kingdom for stealing huge sums belonging to the state, Omo-Agege rose politically, emerging Deputy President of the Nigerian Senate on June 11, 2019 after defeating Ike Ekweremadu, who held the position at the time.

But before then on April 18, 2018, he was arrested by the police in Abuja for leading armed thugs to snatch and seize the mace of the Senate.

No date has been fixed for the hearing of the suit by the youth group.
