FACT CHECK: Trending Photo Shared By IPOB Leader, Kanu Misleading, Not Of Boko Haram In Nigeria

On May 24, 2021, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu posted a picture showing some men with guns in broad daylight on his Twitter page.

According to Kanu, the gunmen were members of the Islamic State-backed faction of Boko Haram, the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP), formerly known as Jamā'at Ahl as-Sunnah lid-Da'wah wa'l-Jihād.
“ISWAP/BH ‪#Fulani‬ boys chilling in public, in broad daylight with AK47, educating fellow ‪#Fulani‬ men on their pathway to the Atlantic Ocean. No army, no police. No air strikes, no shoot at sight. No‪ @CatrionaLaing1‬.

“Meanwhile, in Biafraland, young men are being shot at sight.”

As at 4:30 pm on Tuesday , the post has been retweeted by 5,451 accounts with 5, 051 likes and 450 comments.

However, checks by SaharaReporters revealed that the picture shared by the IPOB leader is not from Nigeria and has nothing to do with Boko Haram sect.

The photo and others were taken in Ansongo, Tinhama district of Mali by Islamic State in the Greater Sahara (EIGS) fighters.

The insurgents were said to have captured three thieves and amputated them.
